  • I recently purchased a pochade box for en plein air painting. It is one of only two painting boxes I've ever owned since I started painting 20 years ago.
    This Alla Prima Pochade box is a work of art, in and of itself. It is hand crafted by an artist that seriously knows what he is doing. I made this video to thank him and to share my enthusiasm, and as a tour for anyone considering the investment.
    I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is supremely well crafted, beautiful, durable, and highly functional for the outdoor painter.
    This video is not sponsored in anyway, it is simply an unbiased review of a great product.

    After weeks of research, I stumbled upon this video. A perfect pochade box that is lightweight, has storage, wet panel career and side wing. Thank you very much.

    I hear ya! paint boxes are so lovely and full of promise on the day we buy them. But of course the art you make is the promise fulfilled. Happy painting!

    4:05 for those that wonder the ridges along the top edge of that drawer are not just decoration you lay your brushes out on them to keep the tips apart and clean.

    Thanks for posting the review. Looks like a great pochade box design.
    That "1/8" screw or something" in the base is probably a 1/4-20 "threaded insert" that mates with a 1/4-20 standard tripod bolt. The inserts are generally available at big box, hardware, or woodworking stores and usually are made of brass or stainless steel. It might also be a more commonly found 1/4-20 "T-nut" (which is t-shaped in profile ) but I can't tell if it has a flange inside the pochade box since the pallet is covering the interior surface.
    Tripod bolts come in 2 standards: 1/4-20 or 3/8". The 3/8" standard is the larger screw that usually attaches the big rotating/tilting tripod head to the tripod leg assembly. The tripod head (which may or may not have a quick release plate) usually has the smaller 1/4-20 bolt that attaches to camera or pochade box (although some photographers use the 3/8" bolt and mating insert on their larger cameras for more stability or when using antiquated wooden or European tripods). There are also 3/8" to 1/4-20 screw adapters available. Any good camera store would have those. But, 99% of the time you are dealing with the 1/4-20 hardware standard which is more than adequate for most pochade boxes and prosumer cameras.

    Loved this box! The only thing that raised red flags for me was the tripod connection in the middle of the box. The weight point when using a box like this is towards the back. When the lid is open, and you are painting, the weight is at the back of the box. This will make it more unstable and shorten it’s life span. 😢

    • @dustinneece
      @dustinneece  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Having used it on a tripod many times, I have to say that it is placed quite well. The additional weight of the drawers, the paint tubes, and other items being stored in the box, as well as downward pressure on the palette itself make the tripod connection exceptionally well placed. Hope this helps in making your decision.

      Interesting. I have this same box but a few years older. The connection point on my box is towards the rear! Other differences are that my drawers do not have the indentations on the top edges. Also, my carrying strap is a fabric instead of leather. I have loved this box. Before purchasing I reviewed the hell out of pochade boxes and the Alla Prima seemed to have the best designs and quality of all of them. The only negative, and this is minor, is that it is a tad heavy which is a consideration when hiking a distance to paint. My painting pack with all my supplies and the box comes in at 22 pounds which is quite manageable.

    Hi Dustin. Can the new box handle the weight of a bigger canvas and the pressure pushing on it by painti g. I couldn't see if it would keep falling backwards or not. Thank you

    • @dustinneece
      @dustinneece  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works quite well with any canvas that it is capable of holding. There is a height limit. And with what I've used, it works quite well. Zero issues falling backwards. Hope this helps.

    HI, when you finish painting and close the box, is the paint ruined on the canvas?

    • @dustinneece
      @dustinneece  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The top part of the box has an opening that holds up to 2 small paintings. As long as you don't paint right to the edge you would be able to slide the painting in. That being said, I use this area for storing clean rags and brushes because my paintings are often larger.

    And what type of tripod do you recommend for this set up ?

    • @dustinneece
      @dustinneece  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a place on the bottom of the Pochade Box to screw in a sturdy tripod. That being said, I paint outdoors with a Beauport Large Format Outdoor Easel and rest the box on that. The Beauport Easel is a less expensive version of this easel: www.takeiteasel.com/. I hope to get this in the future.

Backwards and forwards for a tripod. I feel I’m at my end. I emailed Alla Prima. He told me to take it in the stores. Not cool. He couldn’t give me any recommendations. I would appreciate it.

      ...that's sad to hear the Alla Prima response... I have a Guerrilla and love it...but yeah, Alla Prima is El Primo, I would have thought Ben would have been all over that... and, to me anyways, a new pochade box isn't "beautiful" but rather gets that way with age, paint, sun, rain.... beauty!

      I understand that a tripod that will take a heavy DSLR camera and lens is the best way to go. Manfrotto tripods would be a good place to start looking, though googling "best tripod for heavy loads" would be useful.
