Let me know what you thought about my Castlevania review!
Castlevania: A dark shadow is spreading over the N64. Count Dracula has once again weakened the seals of his tomb, and the Belmont family is getting anxious. In the latest crusade against the forces of evil, players can choose between two brave vampire-slaying characters. Young Reinhardt Schneider, like his predecessors in the celebrated vampire-hunting Belmont family, will rely primarily on his whip. The other character is Carrie Fernandez, a young woman skilled in the ways of magic and spell-casting. Both are on the hunt for the dreaded Dracula and his devoted legions of vampires. You play a game all the way through with the character you've chosen, concluding with his or her own ending. Each character has an individual route to travel, and to see all of the areas you will have to complete the game using both characters.
In Castlevania the passage of time and, especially, the fall of night, play a prominent role in the game. Players will have to search castles filled with dark corners, winding staircases, and other gloomy places. Daytime is the right time for exploring, but be on the lookout for vampires lurking in the shadows. Once the sun goes down, though, you should exercise extreme caution. When night falls, more creatures come out to play, and they become more aggressive as well. Some tasks are impossible to perform unless it is the correct time of day. A clock will allow players to calculate the time and plan their explorations accordingly.
Konami has planted many cinematic sequences throughout the game. These scenes are surprisingly creepy, and may make you decide not to pick up your controller at night. Castlevania has 28 different areas to explore and four different special items at your disposal to fight the forces of evil. An eerie soundtrack tops off the package, creating a satisfying game that takes you on a unique adventure through spooky surroundings.

Ironically, Castlevania 1 wasn't a Metroidvania. The first Metroidvania in the Castlevania franchise was Castlevania 2, Simon's Quest. Then it went back to CV1 style again, more or less, until it re-joined the Metroidvania genre with Symphony of the Night.
This is probably why the only NES Castlevania I still enjoy is CV2. The others were a different genre.

The thing about games today vs games of my child hood is as a kid I would spend hours testing every area with every item spell or upgrade I had gotten and I am a product of video game progression where today I want to be told where to go next and what to with what I just got and that is why Metroid Dread is such a throw back for me for a change I had to struggle like I was a kid again. Even massive open world games like Skyrim has a very straight forward campaign it’s the side missions that take forever and those were a small if not absent part of the nes snes master system and sega genesis era. Once ps1 and N64 hit the scene was a mass of games that held your hand and gave you more than you needed to no to beat it. But then again it is all part of the era. Today Metroid 1 would never sell because it’s an 90 min game because of the internet as a kid I spent a year unlocking its secrets.

There's just something about Castlevania's color scheme that is so appealing even by today's standards. While all the sequels have become grittier and darker, good old Castlevania 1 is bright, colorful and high in contrast. I wish they brought back that aesthetic in some way.

As a kid, I wanted to like Castlevania, but it was so hard. Together with my mom (she got hooked on it right away,) we beat every game on Nintendo together. We even saved every password from normal and "HelpMe" modes.
I still find the original games to be very difficult, but I still love them after the new appreciation I gained from SOTN.

Great video! Yeah Castlevania is super hard. I couldn't get past the 3rd level or whatever it was but then I got to the clock room. I eventually made it to Dracula but then I died to his fireballs. The main villain was really those Medusa heads. Its funny cause Symphony of the Night is the only Castlevania I beat.
Suggestion: The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction and X-Men Legends 2.

I recently bought the original 3 games with an NES, and games like Dark Souls pail in comparison to OG NES hard. I think I died more times just in the first 3 levels than I did my first play through of DS. The series is absolutely amazing though, and I have nothing but love for it. One day, I will conquer Dracula

I'm over 30 so practically ancient by gaming standards and I tried the Castlevania collection on Switch. I found it basically unplayable in clunkiness and difficulty. I just don't have the time/energy to get any good at what it's asking but I appreciated this insight into its history and the goals from the developers. Good work, Jirard and Pat!
