Love my girl to DEATH, but she also said in an interview on Oprah during the Bionic press tour that Not Myself Tonight was late edition that she INSISTED it be the lead single. I can see the record labels frustration, but the album was too good to be disrespected like that....just heard you say that she had previously mentioned Glam as the lead single. Christina..girl. You missed the mark on that one. Glam, Vanity, Primadonna, Desnudate...so many songs that could have been hits.

Christina should've released Burlesque soundtrack first before Bionic as the soundtrack still aligned with the sound from Back to Basic era with a slight transition to electronic sound and then releasing Bionic with Glam as it's first single

Which is why i don’t understand why Taylor Swift released “Me” as the first single from Lover. Like who’s idea was that? If she had released “Cruel Summer” instead, the album could have sold a million the first week like her previous four albums.

@@theakoss Exactly, like she could have released Cruel Summer around April. Not that I hate ''Me'', but it was a huge let down compare to her songs from Repuation. Before hearing the rest of Lover, I thought Taylor downgraded as oppose to evolve as an artist. I'm pretty sure a lot of people didn't give the album Lover'a chance cause of the first 2 singles, thinking the rest of the album would also sound bubblegum pop/childish. I really loved how the main part of the album was divided into cool themes, with the ballad section being my fave. My main issue with Bionic is that the label shelved half the original record, featuring the likes of Goldfrapp and The Neptunes, in favor of more radio-friendly tracks. There's a massive creative gap between the Polow da Pon productions and, say, Monday Morning or Birds of Prey, that leads to a lack of cohesion and direction overall. I'm sure the album as it was initially conceived was the full-blown experimental piece of work described by Christina, but the messy final result was definitely not. Needless to say the promotion was an absolute disaster, and that they should've NEVER ditched Glam as the lead single.

The way I’ve always seen it is that she’s always trying something new on every album. Always experimenting. I don’t see the problem with that especially when someone who’s been in the business so early in their life, of course she wants to try out new things!
The fact that the first few years we’re so successful by experimenting all these different sounds and when it came to Bionic, it was way too advance for that time period. Despite the single choices, that album had great songs, great anthems! People were able to relate to other songs on the album. I’m proud that she was able to experiment this type of sound during that era.

Shall we talk about how RCA basically changed the whole concept and forced her to add songs she did not really want on her album, namely Not Myself Tonight...It's her label that messed it up in the very beginning and then disappeared in the void once they had to deal with consequences. Actually, I believe they STILL ignore her; wouldn't be surprised she paid for all the videos (and half the promo) after You Lost Me.

In the back of my mind, I was hoping you'd do a video on this album, so when I saw the notification for this video pop up, I was ECSTATIC. Thank you for making this video, as I personally feel Bionic was (and still is) a criminally underrated album, far ahead of its time. As you mentioned in the video, the shift in the pop landscape to electropop - with artists like Gaga, Katy, and Ke$ha dominating the early 2010s - diluted the uniqueness of the record and led some people to question X-Tina's authenticity. The delayed release of Bionic was probably the first thorn in the album's side and had it been released a little earlier, perhaps it could have avoided some of the backlash it would receive. Something I would like to point out is Christina's work with Sia on Bionic. Aguilera co-wrote five songs with Sia (including "You Lost Me"). Although Sia had been working in the industry for over a decade at this point, she was a relative unknown in the world of American mainstream pop. A few years after her collaboration with X-Tina, Sia would become the go-to songwriter for other female artists in pop, such as Rihanna, Beyonce, and Britney. So, in this regard, Christina once again blazed the trail in pop music by highlighting Sia's talent and shining a light on an artist who had not received much commercial recognition. BIONIC FOREVER 🤖💙

This is my favorite Christina album besides Stripped. Bionic was ahead of it's time. I felt it was genuine and not just “chasing trends”
You can really feel the work she put into the album and it’s very reminiscent of her XTINA DIRTY days/persona. The Gaga comparisons definitely affected the era as well as promoting the Burlesque film. Xtina should've promoted the shit out of it anyway and the tour would've been amazing... She deserved better. If it was released today, it would still fit. It's timeless and new. I hope she rereleases it for the 10th anniversary. That would be amazing.

The musicians, songwriters, producers, background singers.. etc. Christina had a vision during the making of this album especially for how the tour would be. She was inspired by many alt-electro artists like "The Knife", "Ladytron" & "Air". I think many of the "ahead of its time" sentiment come fro. Especially Ladytron. That was fucking genius. She showed that she doesn't have to be belting to make a track sound amazing. And Elastic Love was really creative for her at that point. The kids of the Bad Romance Era weren't as familiar with Express Yourself and Human Nature (Xtina's influences), so what they saw was Xtina copying Gaga. What was really happening was Gaga was copying Madonna and Xtina's homage felt more like a copy of a copy. It got so bad that Madonna couldn't even copy herself without being accused of copying Gaga. Perez Hilton and Lady Gaga!! These two were the main reasons why bionic underperformed. They did her dirrty and everyone knows it, including them both. Perez actually apologized for victimizing Christina and did throw Gaga under the bus for coercing him indirectly. Though she apologized to Christina publicly in 2013 on Andy Cohen as well. Since then Gaga and Xtina are on good terms and always support each other. However it's still funny to me how a crystal clear Madonna inspired record (in particular NMT and glam in which Christina factually credited Madonna as an inspiration) could have gathered Gaga comparisons in the first place. People were so brainwashed at the time, it's ridiculous. Apart from the MADONNA visuals and electro-genre, Gaga's album had nothing in common with Christina's. And that's what pisses me off. Bionic got so much contemporary hate from everyone as people didn't even give it a proper listen. Ultimately Bionic's failure is based on bad publicity through manipulation by blog culture. It's such a shame because it is actually a decent album. I'm just glad it gets all the love and admiration now. It's a fan favorite and that even amongst stans from other singers. The live audiences go WIIIILD for bionic tracks. The album was truly ahead of it's time.
PS: Glam should have been the first single with a music video.

Gunnhild Edwards Well publicity effects reputation and that effects whether people buy an album or not. Blog culture was a VERY influential and strong marketing force in 2010. Nowadays bloggers are useless as everyone can speak their minds on social media and go viral but that wasn’t the case in 2010. Only a handful of people had the power to voice their opinions on social media while appealing to a larger audience (= bloggers). That’s how Perez was able to make a living in the first place. He can’t anymore but he did, mainly, by using Lady Gaga (the most popular artist and his best friend at the time) to degrade and viciously attack Christina in order to uplift Gaga and get her clout. It was a clear win-loose marketing strategy at Christina’s expense. I’m just glad Gaga distanced herself from the toxic man and apologized to Christina. Do what you want is an iconic collaboration ❤️

Xtina is authentic with her voice and music. Despite being so different, all her albums sounds the same to me (except Lotus), she's more of a R&B/Hip hop/ soul artist so the "music" being different doesn't change her usual sound.
People by the time of Bionic release i think knew how Xtina loves to change her music foe every album and experiment so i don't think she "shoked" anyone with Bionic.
Let's keep in mind that Xtina's songs are not usually "pop" or catchy songs so she always has to WORK to promote them via quality performances and quality MVs, look at the promotion she did for ANOM! Insane! And it paied off. That didn't happen with NMT, very few performances before it release (i only remember the Oprah one, any other performance?) + the song being kinda provactive didn't help in promoting it to GP
NMT is a great song but not the best for a lead single in my opinion, who isn't used to Xtina's sound won't like it because she basically sings an electronic song with her usual "over the top" way. So it was a little confusing to what we usually know electropop to be. BUT if she chose "Prima Donna" or "Bionic" as lead singles i think things would have been different.
+ i want to acknowledge how Xtina's looks for this short era were phenomenal! Edgy and futuristic.
I feel sad every time this subject comes up, imagine if we had a proper Bionic era with quality performances, MVs and a tour!
Whenever i want to imagine what a bionic tour might look like, i go and watch her MTV MMA performance, Amazing!!

I remember that summer when the album had just dropped, I really loved it. I brought my copy to a friend's house and played it and they were like "who is this??" People around me didn't even know she had put out a new record... so, as you say, singles & promotion are CRUCIAL. I do think it is one of those albums that can be appreciated more later, which tends to happen.
I actually am friends with this singer Regina who had a hit in the 80s called "Baby Love". At the time, a similar thing happened where she had a record deal with her band, knew a pre-famous Madonna and helped her out. Madonna got big, Regina embarked on a solo career and was then compared to Madonna and called a copy-cat; her album "Curiosity" under preformed and is kind of an obscurity now. It's sad but once again, everything is ripe for rediscovery and can have a surge in popularity. The controversies of the era have sort of faded with time and the music can be enjoyed for what it is.

I like the way you did this video. I've always liked this album, I've always thought also that their should have been different singles. I'm just curious do you have a particular song you think should've been the lead single?
I think commercially maybe Bionic could have done better, or maybe Primadonna but i don't know if that would have connected for people or not.

Christina has always been an innovative artist. She uses different formulas every time she produces an album...She is so far the most talented artist in her generation. And for Bionic...the most experimental album she ever did...

  • @RyanStorey1231
    @RyanStorey1231 4 ปีที่แล้ว +72

"Back to Basics" is her best album and it was way ahead its time with its retro soul and jazz sound, releasing before acts such as Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Duffy (albeit briefly) got big.
I think her big mistake was not expanding upon that sound. The problem with Christina Aguilera is that not only does she take forever to release new music, but when she does it's always drastically different from the last album. It's really hard to be a fan of an artist with no sonic consistency. There's nothing wrong with experimenting, but Christina just never has had a core sound and it comes off like she just doesn't know who she wants to be as an artist. Is she a bubblegum teen pop star? A raunchy hip-hop/R&B sex kitten? A retro jazz throwback artist? An electro pop artist?
She has an identity crisis. Madonna also reinvented her sound and image every album, but she always had this core to her music that was never lost and she eased herself into her genre shifts. With Christina, it doesn't feel authentic.
In my opinion, the "Back to Basics" sound fit her the best and she should have followed it up with an album expanding on that sound. It would have given her the critical acclaim, it could have been the perfect sound for her to adopt as newer pop stars emerged and it would have helped her stand out, and she could have stood alongside Amy Winehouse and Adele.

    • @RyanStorey1231
      @RyanStorey1231 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Joshua Mattel - "Stripped" is an important and legendary album, but I honestly think it suffers from being too bloated and long. She could have easily cut seven or eight tracks.
"Back to Basics" was long too, but it was a two-disc double album, so it's easy to view it as two separate albums (one being more beat driven and fun, the other being more stripped down and soulful).

    • @jinx-1
      @jinx-1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Disagree. I know I would have never been a huge fan of Christina if she sticked to only one genre or sound. The whole incentive about her is the fact that she always drastically reinvents herself in image and sound. I love the transition from innocent pop princess to sassy-dirrty Xtina to classy Baby Jane to Bionic-tina. She keeps it fresh and interesting and never safe. That's a big portion of her artistry. Yes it leads to a fluctuating demographic and hence limited commercial success and lots of risks but she made it clear since stripped that whether she sells one record or a million records, she has to stay true to herself and keep exploring and evolving as an artist. And that's what she did and still does. Don't confuse that with her having an "identity crisis" or not being "authentic" because it is quite the opposite. Christina knows exactly who she is and what she's doing and...well considering the fact that almost every artist of this generation cites Christina as an influence including Ariana Grande, Demi, Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, Camilla Cabello, Ava Max and countless more, she must be doing something right. Plus she has achieved great commercial success and acclaim despite the inhibiting forces. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 6 Grammys, a disney legend award, sold over 75 million records ww, has 5 #1 hits (expanding to three different yet consecutive decades) and two lifetime achievement awards "the voice of a generation" and "the voice" in honor of her impact and artistry in the music industry. Furthermore she is praised by the likes of Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Etta James to be one of the best artists of her generation. Christina did all that without playing it safe and sticking to one genre. She's established herself as an icon with HER way and I am proud to call myself a loyal fighter who's been there with her since the beginning.

    I will be honest here:
When I was 5 listening to Christina Aguilera,in "candy man" I thought she was a lot older,Like in her 50s(I am not joking lol) but after watching "not myself Tonight" music video(I was 10 or something like that) ,I was like:Tf can old people do that?
As I grew up I would facepalm for saying those stuff lmao
Also I like how you calculate on underrated/underperformed albums on why they flopped or why they did receive less recognition?
Some of my all time favourite Christina's songs are from bionic (that's just my opinion xtina fans)
    - Bionic (more like iconic 👌)
    - woohoo
    - Not myself Tonight (don't judge me)
And you lost me (my favourite song from all of bionic)
But I do like her old work too, Especially "stripped"
Wonder if you are going to make a video about her last record "Liberation"
    And yeah
Video is well made, keep up the good work man

Hahaha, "can old people do that?" 😂 And thank you, I love highlighting misunderstood records. People don't have to like or listen to them, but I think it's important people understand all the factors that can contribute to a record underperforming!
My fave from "Bionic" is hands down "Elastic Love"! And yes, I had so much fun with this video I may cover "Lotus" and "Liberation"!

I like the dynamics and didactics of your videos. Regarding bionic, on the B2B DVD extras Christina already anounces that her next record will be something for the future, she was done with the past. It took me years to get that hint. I don't think the industry has a memo going out to artists about what their next trend should be BUT it was also the turn of a decade, the start of TH-cam(for real), the arrival of LG and her trolls, it became impossible to compete. I remember at that time everyone hated little monsters on the internet and the issue was deeper. LG went on interviews saying she didn't need to capitalize on family drama or trauma to sell pop music and on the hand here's VH1 doing behind the music with Christina discussing child abuse. It was a lot and it changed Christina forever! I also remember with the album out, there was an Oprah appearance, and in letterman instead of doing the tittle track she sang you lost me. So everything was very misleading. I'm glad the light fell back on the album and that it holds its standards now..

My personal choice would be as singles are:
    1. Monday Morning
    2. You Lost Me
    3. Stronger than Ever
    4. Bionic
    5. Birds of Prey
I felt like Monday morning is a solid gem. It would refresh then music scene in the best way. Follow with you lost me as the best supporting song on the album. Everything else would be cake
    Lotus:
    1. Just a Fool
    2. Red Hot Kinda Love
    3. Best of Me - killer ballad of the album
    4. Let there Be Love
    5. Blank Page
She had the right songs the wrong choices
