In honor of Christina Aguilera's 6th studio album Bionic celebrating its 10th anniversary I decided to give it a first listen. Bionic was definitely ahead of its time. And Christina has always been ahead of her time. Like Back to Basics, Christina worked with producers and writers that aren't known for working with pop stars of her magnitude. Prior to working with her, Sia was known for being a very alternative, low key artist going back to the '90s. I remember before Bionic came out, I read an article about Sia's shock when Christina approached her. It was similar to when DJ Premier was approached by Christina for Back to Basics. Neither had worked with big pop stars nor were known for it. Obviously Sia and Christina working together was magic and after that, some of her peers started to work with Sia and then she blows up in her own right. She was also one of the first pop stars to have worked with Nicki Minaj. I've been a fan of hers since day 1 and while I don't think her voice and singing is underrated, I do think that she doesn't always receive enough credit for her innovative ideas. Hits or not, she's consistently pushed herself to step outside of her box. Her body of work has shown that you can't easily put her in one either.

But together it would translate to; take off your clothes. The translations you read aren’t exactly accurate, the way Spanish translates literally word by word sometimes translates to something else when you translate them used together.
And I think the reason why you probably didn’t like sex for breakfast is because it’s a very r&b styled song. And usually those songs aren’t enjoyed by most white audiences tbh.

Lift Me Up has a live performance with Linda Perry on Piano. I think the performance was done before the release of Bionic. Like way before, cause she performed it during the event of Hurricane Katrina. If im not mistaken with an event that hurt so much

She postponed releasing it by a year...and replaced some songs with r & b stuff. I wish her Goldflapp and all her Ladytron collabs were included
+ Thankkkk you!!! As a life long fan of both Xtina & Alternative, Electronic Music in all it's iterations. I was sooo fucking Hype when during 2008/2009 Christina would in interviews allude to the sound & collaborations of the then un-named project (which we later came to know as Bionic). So she would say she had been working with Ladytron, Goldflapp, Letigre, etc. And I would wonder, wow... How is that gonna work? Cuz I knew these artist. But I immediately became interested. Much later on Christina said that the label had major issues with the direction Bionic was headed (More Electronic Sound), and of course. Recommended more radio friendly songs which was how Sia, Nicky Minaj, and Linda Perry came into the picture and why Bionic seems sooo... Bipolar, in it's sound. Both containing some of Chritina's most beautiful ballads and then a sound that was soooooo far removed from anything she had ever done before (Elastic Love, Monday Morning, Bobblehead, Birds Of Prey, Vanity, Desnudate, etc.).

Sal cuz it’s a long album! I’m a huge xtina fan and I loved the genuine and honest review, while u didn’t like some songs u could still appreciate the work behind it and the purpose of it! Except for sex for breakfast lmao like how dare u that’s a masterpiece no one does it like that
The track 'Bionic' is an intro. Christina always has an intro track to each of her albums (with exception for her first album). Christina worked with a lot of underground electric artists to achieve the sound she wanted artistically. Linda Perry, one of her long time producers, said that Christina knew that this album was too out there to be a big commercial hit, but she didn't care about that as she wanted to stay true to herself as an artist.

I love how in retrospective, Christina was criticised for "imitating" Gaga with a video in which she was paying homage to Madonna. Literally, NMT was an ode to Madonna's videography, and then a few years later they all started noticing Gaga was taking inspiration from Madonna but Christina was never vindicated. Gay fans online can be toxic

I think I can clear up a few things about the concept for why the album felt disjointed. Here's how I love to see it:
Bionic has 3 parts: the machine and human. The human/the heart. The robot.
The first part, the bionic part, is a combination of playfulness, vulnerability but transformed into strength, domination and edginess. It's a bit kinky, a bit witty, a bit teasey, a bit nasty. It's "young at heart in a big girl's world" vibe.
It almost let's you see the vulnerable (take woohoo as an example : "imma let you get a bit closer, even tho I ain't supposed to") but then tries to cover the vulnerability with humor and playfulness ("I'm a little tipsy, play along with me..."). I like to think that every song up until Sex for Breakfast is the bionic part. Although, SFB starts leaning towards vulnerability, which introduces us to:
The human/The heart. This is the vulnerable side. Here, the vulnerability is in full display. Broken down she asks for help (lift me up), that even when trying to be loving she is humbled down by her son (All I need) but then she makes the statement that she accepts who she really is, take it or leave it (I am) but even with her resolution, when trying to appear strong, it comes off as bargaining, that is why You Lost Me has a cheeky undertone making a callback to the bionic side, but instead of going into the playful territory goes in another direction, this time it is the segue to:
The robot. The machine. No going around throwing metaphors to say she hates something. No fucks given, a cold persona who doesn't care what anyone thinks. The cheekiness becomes witty but with a mean attitude (I believe bobblehead would've fit well in the last tracks, actually) : she hates boys, but she loves men, "but then again all men are dogs...", girls have the best banter ("we're running the show, teasing all the boys on the go") and "Im not cocky, I just love myself... Bitch!"
I know this was not the original idea of Bionic that Xtina had, and that single wise, it never had strong tracks as solo tracks. The album was always a conceptual one, and as such, I think it holds up. It's a story from top to bottom held together by the electropop/r&b fusions, sounds and the very same concept. She introduced us to sounds we, now in 2020, hear every day on spotify, from a work released 10 years ago.
I love this album. As X said many times before: it was an album that connected her playful side and I adore it. It became an insta favorite back in 2010 (believe it or not) and it is still one of my favorite albums of all time. It's fun, clever and a trip.
It's a shame that whenever she tries to do something fun, her target community is all like: "yeah, but it's Christina.. Give me some slowtempo dramatica ballad that talks about the sociopolitical headspace of third world countries. Make your great voice matter... " and I hate that.

Bionic is the most experimental album in Aguilera's career. She worked with so amazing alternative eletronica artists! M.I.A. produced Elastic Love, Santigold worked in Monday Morning and Bobblehead, Le Tigre and Peaches in My Girls, the amazing duo Ladytron produced Birds of Prey and Little Dreamer (which were excluded from the standard version of the record...). Very alternative and experimental stuff! It's a shame that RCA cut the most part of that, to fill the record with r&b generenic pop songs, like Deanudate, Primadonna, I hate Boys of. This are great songs, and even different thanks to Xtina efforts, but was not the innovative thing she aim to the record. The ballads by Sia are amazing too. You Lost Me, I am and All I Need are masterpieces, sonically and vocally, very Aguilera atemporal stuff like Beautiful and Hurt.

Xtina was the 1st pop star to work with Sia i think they worked in 2008/2009 with these balads...after that she Also invited Sia to be her advisor on The Voice season1 in 2011 and after that David Guetta invited her to Sing Titanium and Sia was signed by Xtina label RCA and the rest is history she worked with everybody but Xtina was the First for This álbum and Burlesque 🤗

Btw, this was the first time that Sia worked with a mainstream pop artist before the "Sia song" was a standard for the other singers, the same with Nicki Minaj they were not that big back in the day.
The whole album is really messy and it was like this since the beginning: it was delayed a lot of times, the label made her change the sound and the "Light and darkness" concept, even she scrapped songs with a lot of interesting producers, so it's normal that the final result is so irregular.
Liberation is my fave album from her, is personal but not so serious and a lot of RnB / hip-hop influences; Stripped is her most iconic, personal and raw; and Back to Basics is the most cohesive and with best vocals (:

The songs that she made with Polow da Don (Not Myself Tonight, Woohoo, and I Hate Boys) were later recorded because her record label felt that the album didn't have hits material. She had worked on the album since 2007, which is probably the big reason of why some of the songs on Bionic actually do sound like they came from 2007/2008, like, Goldfrapp's Supernature era or Santigold (then-Santogold) debut music.

I do think the wikipedia page hypes this album up more than it actually was. Like Not Myself Tonight and You Lost Me, those were the singles. Woohoo was a promo radio "single", but without a music video and remixes and was only serviced to select radio stations and countries. I Hate Boys was also a radio promo "single" and if I remember correctly it was only "released" in Oceania and maybe South-East Asia. Over here in Europe, we only really got to hear You Lost Me. Not Myself Tonight was released, but was nowhere to be found, but You Lost Me actually was on the radio throughout that summer. I'd even say Lift Me Up was found in way more places than Woohoo and I Hate Boys, because she performed it live for Haiti.

I enjoyed every single song and he is missing the point of the meaning behind it. Theirs many layers to her voice and how her voice is like a machine who can sing anything. I enjoy all the songs for what they are. Its one of her best albums.

The sounds of Bionic are totally different from The Fame Monster. People compared it so much, that they never listened to how the sounds are not the same. She had hate because she had said that Gaga copied her Blonde hair with straight bangs. Gaga fans hated her and it ruined Xtina's moment with Bionic
Espeon The Magician it also got Gaga lots of airtime in the US helping her get some type of buzz. Well adding to the hype train atleast.
"Bionic" and Gaga's album are two completely different things. Unfortunately the fans of a new female artist that is the "new hot thing" always act as if the artist in question invented music or is original. Now it's the turn of Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish. The fans think that they invented things. The truth is that Gaga took a lot from Madonna to make her songs, so did Xtina when she made "Bionic". The only possible similarity lies in that these two artists were heavily influenced by Madonna.

It's very simple all she does is steal from other artists especially Madonna and her monsters would have you believe she's the most original artist ever. It's sickening.
@@SalRocha I see. Well I certainly don’t believe she’s the most original artist, and while I understand your perspective, I still admire Gaga’s talent and music. It speaks to me, and just from my own personal experiences, Gaga was the first celebrity I remember telling me it was okay to be gay, be weird, be whatever it is I wanted to be.
And to be fair to Gaga, pop music is kinda of “reductive” in general, as their are only so many chord progressions and melodies you can use that sound good before you have to start repeating stuff. But I understand where you’re coming from and won’t try to “convert” you lol. Thank you for being honest though and telling me. I’ve watched some more of your videos and I like your reaction style.

I'm sorry, but your reaction to "Little Dreamer" is hilarious. You are talking about how cute and sweet it is and you failed to notice how dark and sad the lyrics are. Lots of people think it's about a miscarriage and I would agree.
Stripped, Back to Basics, and Liberation are much better than Bionic, but I still love it. I love most of the songs in Bionic tbh.
Igor's terrible ideas Liberation is mediocre, a lot of different songs mixed up and put in an album full of intros. Bionic is a masterpiece.
@@BerryStraw15 Honestly, that album needs at least 4 more songs to be a true Xtina album. That would have helped with the intros and different types of songs. Stripped had a lot of different genres and that's a fucking masterpiece. It still holds up SO well. I think I might like Bionic more than Liberation, or at least I have more songs to choose from.
