- Welcome back to Pop Dissected! Today, we're going to be discussing Christina Aguilera's seventh studio record, "Lotus"! Hot off the heels of the incredibly divise era, "Bionic", many assumed "Lotus" would be a triumphant return.
However, upon the release of the record, this proved to be anything but true. So what happened with this record? In the video, we're going to discuss what factors may have contributed to the performance of "Lotus" and how the era could have been reshaped to be more successful!

Lotus failed because it virtually had no promotion. RCA sucks when it comes to promotion with all their artists. Lotus also sounded very generic. I wanted this album to do so well but sadly it didn’t.

@@queensawayama6773 Eh, the electro-pop sound didn't really sell albums by late 2012, especially not for someone like Christina. I think she would've had a better chance doing more songs like Just a Fool, which definitely had a chance to become a much bigger hit. 2013 was a huge year for slower, more melancholic music and I think she could've been right on the money focusing on more stuff like that
What? Lotus had a lot of promotion! The album's songs were performed at the American Music Awards, Ellen Degeneres Show, The Voice (one of the biggest shows at the time), Peoples Choice Awards, Jimmy Kimmel, radio airplay, and a well done music video. Promotion was not an excuse in this case.

But 2012 was a year of huge electro pop songs, Scream & Shout, Pound The Alarm, Call Me Maybe, Glad You Came, Beauty And A Beat, Starships, I Need Your Love and a lot of Calvin Harris hits, Die Young, What Makes You Beautiful lol! The list is loooong!
@@byronreinoso9724 They scored hits yes, but they didn't sell albums. Flo Rida had FOUR top 10 hits off his 2012 album and it didn't even sell 500K. Kesha's album didn't do well, Nicki's album sold short of expectations, Carly Rae's album didn't do very well, will.i.am's album bombed, etc. The only example you listed that had a successful album that year was One Direction and they had and still have an extremely dedicated young fan base. The big album sellers of 2012 were Adele, Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and P!nk. None of these artist were doing upbeat electro-pop and yet were still selling albums and concert venues much more so than the hit-makers of that time. Christina could have utilized her strengths and made an album more akin to songs like Blank Page and Say Something and become far more successful than she ended up.

I've been a fan since GIAB and still a big fan. Sometimes, I feel Christina's issue is she doesn't give her base what they want. There's a reason Stripped and B2B were stronger eras for her. She delivered what we want from her...less pop, more vocals. She can be a pop star without losing sight of what her base wants. Imagine if Adele decided to release a dance pop album. That's not what her fans want from her. I get Christina started off in the teen pop era but her voice is what set her apart.. Britney was always the superior when it came to the dance pop arena. Christina needs to focus on the vocals and just give us a great complimentary aesthetic and call it a day.
I think that's the problem of her career. Especially after cementing herself in the artist category in Back to Basics, Bionic as a followup was jarring for most people. She's a singer and people have write her off as pop star since Back to Basics. There must be a reason why Burlesque soundtrack almost sold a million despite the movie not a success.

Omg yes! This album really went under the radar. Even though it wasn’t her best, It had some solid songs. I still jam to this album to this day. I’m still mad that “Let there be Love” wasn’t bigger and had a proper music video!
I agree with you. "Army of me", "Cease fire", the beautiful "Blank Page"... I keep this songs among my favourites from Cristina Aguilera. Army of me has help me to save my sanity more than twice in my life.

I think that "Let There Be Love" should have been a lead single - Also Christina should have started this era much earlier in order to captivate more attention after the success of Moves Like Jagger. "Your Body" is a bop but I think it is very predictable and generic track, however the music video is stunning and I love her looks in it (I think she captured really well the fashion trends of 2012 in that video). I think that it was a smart move to release "Just a Fool" as a single but not as the 2nd single - I believe that "Army of Me" should have been the 2nd single and then I would have released "Just a Fool" as the 3rd single. I love ballads from this album and few pop tracks such as "Red Hot Kinda Love" or "All Around the World".
Let There Be Love is one of my all time favourite songs, it definitely should have been released as a single!

Jessica Delacruz I felt like Bionic felt more like Artpop though, not Gaga’s early albums. Very experimental.
She definitely was influenced by Goldfrapp not Gaga. Goldfrapp even did a song with her but it was unreleased.
If anything, Christina really knows a thing or two about hate and bullying.
People were making of her flopping with Bionic and Burlesque, she received a lot of heat for gaining weight which is crazy

With that being said, there are a few gems on Lotus, by overall it’s just not the quality I’m used when it comes to Christina.
In my opinion, she redeemed herself artistically on Liberation.
As a hardcore Christina fan, you were spot on here. She was just aiming for all the wrong things. Liberation was in no way a perfect album. But it was leagues better than Lotus and Bionic. I will say Bionic has some better songs on it than Liberation did, but I can pretty much listen to every song on Liberation and I can't say the same for the other 2. She wasn't holding back on promoting that record either. Lotus and Bionic felt like she was almost embarrassed or didn't really care about focusing on that era of her work. When she announced Liberation she did what she wanted and gave the fans what they wanted. A Demi collab was a genius move. I saw that tour and almost everyone there was in their 20s and 30s and were fans that grew up with her. Christina Aguilera has a legacy, and just because she maybe can't reach the wide audiences she did in the late 90s early 2000s doesn't mean she's unsuccessful. If anything, her 20 year old career is extremely impressive. If we're being real, her debut is amazing, her christmas album was amazing, stripped is a masterpiece, back to basics is unreal. She's a legend and no flop album can take that away.
Bionic and Lotus were released around her darkest time (Divorce) also the reception of Bionic (some helped by Perez Hilton) was pretty harsh. I don't think it's fair to just say that she gave up. Especially now that we know more more how the industry is sneeky and cruel. I'm sure she dealt with a lot of shit she doesn't talk about. Unlike some artists, other than in her songs she is not the one bragging about stuff that happened to her. She's also from an other generation. The promotion on insta/tiktok/Facebook is not part of her business. She is not seeking for new young fans either. Like you said she is just making music for her, it's not like she needs the money anyway.
I feel like she doesn’t have anything to prove. She’s Xtina. She just wants to make music. Also, Lotus has some great bops.

Christina def could have went on a small venues tour. The “small venues tour” is a pst idea that artists are starting to bring back to the for front. . That no one was really thinking of back then. In 2011/2012. I love it because it lets the fans who actually did buy your record see you live and show appreciation to the fans.
When I think of Lotus I just remember that clip of Christina saying: "Maybe it was too ahead of its time for certain people" when she was promoting the album xD

Aah yes, Lotus, the era of Christina's secret meltdown.
The conspiracy goes, that she finally let out all the hurt the Bionic era caused her and more. Not only she was hated, shamed, viciously compared publicly, but she was going through divorce in the midst of cheating allegations, followed by a critically panned movie. Accepting The Voice's offer was smart to let people know more of her guarded personality. The problem was, that the perception of her personality changed very little because she was seen as a "diva" or "so into herself," so any "off-comment" and mild criticism to the contestants was seen as a bitch move. She was, continued to be and still is the media's scapegoat so they had a field day dragging her name through the mud as always.
Outside her proffesional life, her personal one didn't seem rose colored either. This is the era in which the fighters saw a big change in her through Candids and rumors. Always going out of bars and restaurants visibly intoxicated, messy hair and makeup, wearing oversized shirts or ill fitted clothes, always seen with sad eyes/looking tired or empty gazed, weight gain... and all culminated in her arrest for drunk-driving and subsequent image self-sabotage on The Voice (the awful wigs, make up and attire she wore during the last remainder of the era were tough.)
Of course, many people believe she was just having fun and this was a reach. Public statements from her team saying that "she was ok" did help to quiet the media down, but the fighters who noticed, have especulated she was going through a rough patch. However, the conspiracy doesn't stop there:
Many fans believed that Lotus was pressured onto her as purely PR/contract bound. Something like this: "Bionic was experimental for you, we told you it wouldn't work. Now do as we say. Do pop." or "The Voice's contract stipulates that you will have to release an album while being on the show. The album will be almost an NBC exclusive, so you have to do 1, 2, 3 to promote it mainly through 1,2,3" or "You don't do what we say and we can make the press write 1,2,3 about'cha." And any fighter will tell ya: Christina has issues with people trying to control her, she doesn't want to, she doesn't let it. So she self-sabotages her public image, rebels in wearing weird things on The Voice, refuses to promote Lotus further and starts dragging The Voice in passive-aggressive comments in the media.
Rumors of her alledged breakdown only grew (within the fanbase) when Liberation released. If "Sick of Sittin'" was any indication of her point of view, then she really was made to give into their game. The lyrics "I survived the dark ages, But the former trailblazer took out the knife and cut ties...Honey, don't do me no favors. The root of evil couldn't change me." Is kind of telling, but the bridge goes a bit further : "They wanna take my shine.They wanna take my time.But I'ma take what's mine.Don't play with me. They try to use my name. Oh, what they wouldn't do for the fame. But I ain't you and we ain't the same. This ain't a game to me."
Lotus is one of the worst Christina Aguilera produced albums. Not the songs, but it's the mixing in particular that is dreadful. And many, myself included, failed to see how this was so personal aside from a few lyrics that happened to fit her "coming out of her dark ages." Creatively speaking, is hard to see Christina's input on the sound and passion on the visuals she was known for. The passion she showed with Stripped, B2B and Bionic. Funnily, the Lotus era will always be remembered as the time Christina spoke about Bionic being "ahead of its time." Contrary to popular belief, her comment came AFTER the fanbase started shouting to the universe that "Bionic was ahead of its time." The comment, gave us a sense of relief, it was that moment we knew that she knew her true fanbase was listening. The moment I knew she'd be okay.
Do I believe in the breakdown? IDK. Is plausible but there is more evidence to note that she was just having a bit too much fun and the meltdown was an exageration. However, she has always been very guarded when it comes to her private life so... I can't put it under the rug.

@@pinkunokinyobi oh yeah, Liberation's interviews have more direct shade to The Voice, she don't give a damn no mo' 😂. We can only imagine how it was for her there. But considering the daily rumors in the press, same old: Xtina diva, rude, demanding, ego-tripping, etc. When her attitude came from her taking the show very seriously combined with her introverted personality. She cared for what she did a lot more than the show gave her credit for.

@@juliank1439 I definitely think things have been weird since Bionic, I remember radios holding back Not Myself Tonight. Just rumors tho. I think the biggest offender it's her management. They are, at best, mediocre and at worst, yes men which caused Liberation singles to flop. I mean, real talk here but: we didn't really get a proper Era.
Think about it: we just got 1 MV for a very difficult piece to digest (Accelerate) , 1 song/MV that was sent very late to the radios, which was also a very difficult piece digest (FIL) and 1 digital single release where there is only a lyric video (like I do).
Never mind that Right Moves, Masochist, Deserve, Pipe and Unless it's With You, were the most pop radio friendly/trendy/mood setting songs of the album. We also didn't get treated with The Aguilera flavor of visuals. I understand this was supposed to be her "testing the waters," but still.
The other problem might lie with our girl as well. Probably her management wants to guide her to pick better singles, but she might be a little stubborn to even listen to them. So who knows.

I LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM REGULARLY
Back to basics was my favorite album as a preteen, I would listen to it on my CD player over and over again. Wish she kept to that vintage style.
It was just a dark time for her. 2010-2012, while releasing Bionic and Lotus. I suspect she was going through a hard time after the breakup and all the backlash after Bionic, the National Anthem bluff, public pressure of being on TV twice a week. She just wasn't in a good place overall. The Lotus roll out looked like trolling, forreal. When she took a break after the 3rd season and returned for Season 5 she was just glowing with a new and fresh energy. That's when "Say Something" happened. Then she went on to live life for a little bit out of the spotlight, had another baby and came back almost 6 years later with Liberation, which may not have had a great commercial success, but it's her best and solid effort since 2006's Back to Basics, with some great collaborators and producers and much more R&B influenced sound. THAT was something she was passionate about and could get onboard with a tour around US, Europe and even Mexico. So I'm happy with where she's at now.
Unpopular opinion: i love Lotus. 2010 was a really hard year for Xtina, she received many attacks by the media with unfair comparisons. I feel like she refuge in music to create Lotus in 2012. I really like the concept of the unbreakeable flower, wich remains strong and beautiful in the tuffest conditions. I think "Your body" was and still is a bop. I would have love music videos for "Just a fool", "Make the world move", "Blanck page", "Cease fire" and "Around the world". But i think is not a commercial album with a lot of "hits". Christina doesn't have that mentality, she doesn't make music just to sell albums. Lotus is all about uplifting songs with positives messages. On the other hand, there was a lack of promotion and i have to admit not very good live performances during this era. I think only true Christina's fans like me, can understand and appreciate Lotus, but you have to know who she is as an artist.
I think she just gave up on Lotus, also with kids and the voice bringing in money she just didn’t feel the need to tour which is really tough. Vegas residency is the best thing for her.
Honestly, in my opinion, I believe that all the pressures of the industry really got to her between 2010-2012. You can see that she (or her label, most likely) opted to work with the ‘hitmakers’ of the industry to launch a comeback (the very producers she initially did not work with purposely). Between being on The Voice, the success of MLJ and working with popular producers, there was immediately an expectation for her to reclaim the success she had with the albums precious to Bionic and I think it was an unrealistic expectation in regards to how much effort she wanted to put in to appeal to the public. I recall there being a Twitter post from her makeup artist regarding a “Your Body” performance on The Voice that was pre-recorded which never ended up airing. I genuinely think there was something about this album and era that didn’t feel right for her. She was also being bullied left-and-right and fat-shamed by the media, the public and her own fans alike and I imagine that was difficult to deal with for even the strongest of people. This era was the beginning of her not placing as much importance on promotion and sales as there was much less promotion coming from her end. I do not think that she presently wants to make the effort to appeal to new fans and success as even with her Liberation album, she did not do any strenuous promotion like her peers yet continued to communicate with fans and hold various tours for the album. I think she is passionate about her music and artistry but doesn’t like the game of the industry which would explain her lack of promotion as well as her not enjoying the experience of The Voice and longer breaks focused on her family. Just some things I have noticed as a fan! Like many, I do not consider Lotus amongst her best work but I do think it was a moment in time and I like the positivity it has in regards to perseverance. ❤️

That's cause even though she's not a rock singer, due to her raspy voice, people in general (especially pop culture) associate her with rock music, instead of pop and pop/rock that are her genres, which means that people won't mention her along with Britney, Beyonce, Christina, Madonna, Gaga, Taylor, and all that.

I loved Lotus and thought it was a fantastic album. Her voice was controlled and powerful. And the album as a whole had a real cohesiveness to it. I thought it was highly underrated and shunned by the mainstream.
I think one of Christian's major issues is her lack of cultivation amongst her fan base. She hadn't toured in over 13 years (until Libertarian, which is a 100% complete mess) Fans need to see her. She's not active on social media. Fans need to interact with her, see her on their TLs, etc. She doesn't seem to care about her fans unless she's wants is to buy an album.

Lotus is such a beautiful & meaningful album. Blank page, army of me, sing for me, best of me, light up the sky & empty words. Literally MASTERPIECES. The intro... whew pure FIRE. I honestly love the entire album & know it word for word. The lyrics are so meaningful especially if you have been through some hard ass times her music will always get you through it. I always felt like people disrespected this album as a trend. I also always disliked how much disrespect Christina gets as an overall artist too. I remember in this era she was body shamed so bad & it made me so sad. This album has such a great place in my heart. I wish I could tell Christina how much of an incredible artist she is & that she deserves all her flowers because she is truly a legend. Lotus is truly an amazing album & I wish people would’ve really gave it a chance to understand it, because it’s amazing, the first listen I took to it I was hooked❤️ I literally ran to the store & brought the album lol & I’ve always wanted to get lyrics from the album tattooed on me because they are so meaningful. This album was literally about her being bullied by the media & that words can’t hurt her & she can overcome anything but all people do till this day is shame her for everything that she does. It’s so sad cause she’s so damn amazing. Regardless of sales or anything like that’s she’s fucking INCREDIBLE & I will always Stan by Legentina❤️

I don't know about you guys but I love bionic and lotus...She said many times in interview she doesn't care about sales and charts on the boards so may be that's the reason she didn't drop music when her collaboration with maroon 5,pitbull and A great big world was topping the charts,being a mom and having a well established and perfect family life,she takes many years of gaps between her records,that shows she is not after the sales and charts,she is just making music for her fans and as a personnel release of her life and experience..And me as her fan I don't care about whether she hits no1 or sales 27millions copies,as long as she makes music and inspire me,i will be thankful and be a loyal fan till I die...
Poor promotion, media “fat shaming” her at the time and I remember it was really bad. And also her vocal condition was not great at that time, could be the stress she s feeling who knows. However as much as a mess this era is, this album in particular was a moment to me. 16 year old me was in love with the album and let’s be real there are bops in the album.
I thinks she needs to release a latin album again for the 20th anniversary and do promotion here! The comeback we all have bee waiting for!

I feel that her label becomes scared because of the initial numbers that come in and they resort to compromising christina's initial vision of her project. She needs to take control of her artistry and finance her own music videos and promotion min 3 singles and make her songs more creative and deliver a meaningful message and not let her sexual songs over shadow her albums .

Lotus deserved way way way more! It's a shame it flopped because it honestly slaps so hard! What I find so weird is that her collabs that had absolutely nothing to do with Lotus had better chart success than the singles from the album!
Liberation 68K pure sales is really solid for an artist at this stage in her career. I think Christina will have her "Emancipation of Mimi" era. She just needs that one song
_Let There Be Love_ should have been the official lead or second single. _Your Body_ is a banger & _Army of Me_ would have also made a great single. There are great ballads, as usual, however _Cease Fire_ is one of her best, not just on this album, either. It sounds perfect for a film soundtrack & I'm still surprised it wasn't use for one. It's very progressive & powerful. Anthemic. I even really like the Lotus intro. Both Lotus & Bionic are underrated. I liked that she did something different with Liberation, but overall it's kinda forgettable & I don't revisit it often.
She just doesn’t care about sales :) she cares about the music. So what happend to Bionic and Lotus? Nothing. They’re just pieces of art of a mainstream singer. Lotus is a good album, just not her best. But it’s a good enough indicator that Lotus, honestly is a better album than most sellout albums at that period. We cannot deny Bionic, though. It’s way too ahead of its time. People are now appreciating it. No one, not even Gaga could pull off an album like that. As a fan, I don’t care if she sells ten copies of her art. For as long as she puts out her genuine work out there, I’ll be fine. :)

I wish you’d do a video on Liberation, amazing album and one of her best works. She recently said she’s working on Spanish music and I hope she really makes it big again.
Bionic, Lotus and Liberation are like the Unholy Trinity of albums... I think that Christina is still an amazing artist and one of the greatest vocalists of all time. But her last three albums... I can't tell what direction her and her collaborators were aiming for with any of them. Plus, there were a million delays and so few chances for promo. Fighters literally talk all the time about how Christina kinda dismissed "Your Body" and didn't acknowledge it for a while. Liberation was even worse. "Accelerate" was probably one of the worst songs off of Liberation. I would've lead with "Fall In Line" instead because more people would've been hyped over a collaboration with Demi. And then the album itself felt disjointed and overly produced. Idk... I hope she's able to revive her career like how Mariah did a couple of times. I'm still rooting for her!
Christina is all about Live performances 100x better than the original songs !

💖i Love the álbum, much more than Bionic who is my less favorite from her, but the big problem was the media dumb comparisons with others artists and her record label who doesn't support her enough....and these latest álbuns Lotus and even Liberation need more promotion and 2 or 3 stronger singles...
But i really appreciate all her álbums and no matter what i'm a FIGHTER since day one and FOREVER....Christina is the only one besides MARIAH CAREY and Beyoncé who really touch my heart, she means a lot to me, i'm a huge fan and i always will be...that's why it hurts me this because she's so talented and deserves so much more LOVE and success, but sometimes the artists have this bad times, doesn't mean she isn't talented, just need more support and better songs...and yes people are unfair and mean without any reason...not just with Christina, and there is others who do bad songs but they are successful because they are media sweethearts....
But i will be with my favorites always, i'm from the same generation of her and will Love her FOREVER💕💯

I would love to see Xtina taking some risks and escaping from her apparent accomodation of her persona. She would be awesome as a vocalist of a project, not only for her solo career. I have chills for just imagining she giving her voice, with all her performatic tones and nuances, to something bigger than her. She is amazing for what she already has done, essentially for all the production and features partnerships she established through time, not for the unrealistic image of a perenious pop diva she and her fans create por herself.
I think she's better with ballads/power ballads.
Her pop sounds don't do well with me.

It's so weird when you're the only person in the world who still listens to several tracks from Lotus today. I didn't like the album, but I was obsessed with songs like Red Hot Kinda Love and Circles.
Lotus is an underrated album and could've been her comeback album.
1 - the Your Body song and video is a slap to the face to the critics, they call her a sl*t and she sings oversexualized lyrics, they call her cheap and she lives in a camper, they call her a crazy femminist and she kills men etc. It was a good lead single, but she never promoted it.
2 - the album features a bunch of radio-friendly songs who still got personality thanks to her big voice, some tracks (eg. 'Cease fire', 'best of me' etc) either stepped into new genres or new sounds, there's a balance of sounds reinforced with personal or fun lyrics.
3 - the promotion was terrible, this album balances fun and Xtina-esque music, it needed more singles ('red hot kinda love' deserved to be a single, smash hit potential), a better rollout and most importantly, an ACUTAL promotion.
Your Body is INCREDIBLE periodT
Simply put Xtina isn't a chart chaser. If she was she would do what everyone else is doing and do a single ft Ariana or whoever is on top at the moment. She's known for collabing with people before they peak into stardom ie Sia, Nicki. As a fan I wish she'd just bite the bullet and do features for charts but I'm just happy she still sounds just as good and is still releasing music.

I think the smaller momentum of 'Let There Be Love' should have been included in the video since it topped the Billboard Club Chart and the face that it was a big dance hit without it being released as a single. It made her make a feel-good music video to the song which was not a mainstream hit but it still was an unexpected success. IMO it should have been released as the second proper single from the album.
I remember when lotus came out, and in some award show, instead of performing your body, she performed with 3! songs and did a huge mess of a show. there was zero sense in the promotion.
She’s always been accused of copying or trend chasing when she literally did so many things before any contemporary pop girls of her time did & before all these new pop girls. Stripped was about liberating yourself & self love & feminism. Back to basics had the circus theme & she talked about the bionic albums sound & influence during her back to basics era in 2007 but then Gaga came out & rca made her compete with Gaga. It’s really a shame how the timing for her was always off & how rca was terrible at managing her career.

the biggest reason why xtina did not want to tour for lotus is mainly because she has a family to take care of. Being a mom isn't easy especially when the kids are growing up. She can't tour because she does not wanna miss out on memories with her kids. Especially when she just got out of a divorce with her then husband Jordan. Getting out of a marriage is not easy. Co parenting is not easy. She toured back to basics WHILE PREGNANT. Imagine going on tour & having to deal with a divorce, Co Parenting, raising a kid ETC. Xtina releasing Lotus & doing The Voice is just to make income for her kids/raising a family. Which is not wrong at all ❤️

Let There Be Love should’ve been a single! It’s fun, radio friendly, and catchy. TBH It should be the lead over Your Body, and released after Moves Like Jagger.
And for some reason she had a recorded performance of Your body on the voice but she didnt release it.
I feel like Christina stopped caring about being a pop star after the whole Bionic fiasco, but her label keeps pushing her to do so.
Honestly Bionic was a great album and people failed to realize during the time of its release. Unfortunately the bullying she got from Perez strongly influenced a hate train for Christina and caused a majority of people not to tune in on Bionic. Now for lotus.. that album was just.. not so great haha. Liberation on the other hand is definitely a great piece of work!
I LOVE Christina Aguilera, I even sing just like her but she in these albums she was reaching for the wrong things, she would be better doing bluesy stuff, I think she finds it hard to strike a balance between her own sound and being commercially appealing
