Today, we’re going to be talking about Avril Lavigne’s fourth studio record “Goodbye Lullaby” and why it underperformed in comparison to her three preceding efforts.
Avril Lavigne is an incredibly talented artist and one of my personal favorites so this video is not meant to look down upon her but look at factors that may have contributed to the rocky release of this album.
“Goodbye Lullaby” is seen by some as the point in where Avril Lavigne’s career began to shift, which may seem surprising after the successes of “The Best Damn Thing”, “Under My Skin” and “Let Go”.
So let’s jump right into it and see what went wrong with Avril Lavigne’s “Goodbye Lullaby”.

Honestly just say Kesha instead of crying to pronounce it as it looks. That's annoying. Honestly without knowing Avrils interview about her goal for the album, I definitely think good bye lullaby does show maturity as the album progresses track after track. I love all of her albums and love seeing the evolution of her music over the years.

Avril Lavigne is so talented who plays guitars, drums, and piano. She also wrote and co-wrote every single she released. She's also generous, humble, kind and sweet. I will always love her and her songs. She deserves more coz she's genuine person who's go with the flow. I wish you'll rise again Avril Lavigne.

What happened to this album is just so tragic. The fans "voted" on whether Push or Smile would become the second single and Smile was chosen, completely derailing the album. Push is a far better and evolved sound that Avril clearly wanted to lean into. Not Enough is one of her best songs ever. Also the album art is gorgeous! It's really sad, and I'm glad Avril is independent now and making better content.
It is tragic, but I'm happy Avril seems to now be able to make what she wants!!

RCA is the reason we will never hear other goodbye lullaby songs like Gone, Fine and Complete Me which could've easily been some of her best songs ever, i'm still waiting for them to leak to this day :(

RCA Records, the delay on releasing the album, only in 2011 when we had a big explosion of pop artists in the market like Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga + a lack of direction and ownership from her part obviously influenced by her label trying to follow the current trends at the time, completed teared apart this whole era. I can just remember this album cycle as a green palette version of The Best Damn Thing but way less successful. So sad.

She actually shifted from mainstream pop to more artistic music that she wanted to make. I applaud her for that, her label did everything possible to torpedo her efforts.

I truly believe that had this album cycle been pushed out the way Avril had intended, it would have been massively more successful. There’s way too many examples of artists intentions being vastly superior to their labels, it’s definitely time labels start taking the hints that sometimes their artists just know better.

i wish her label pushed avril to be more like paramore (rock punk sounds) instead of pop but clearly they wanted her to pander to mainstream audiences

Thank you. You’re one of the only people who makes videos about Avril’s albums and actually digs into why they turned out the way they did instead of just saying they’re bad or good. Goodbye Lullaby is definitely one of those albums I have a love hate relationship with. It’s always one of my first picks to point people who say she can’t sing toward because her voice is incredible on so many tracks, it has some of my favorite songs by her on it such as Remember When and Darlin, but at the same time it is very disjointed. I will never forget when I went and bought a copy of the album. Growing up I was really close to my sister and she was in a bad relationship at the time. We went to Walmart to pick up some stuff and I got Goodbye Lullaby and we got into the car and she was like “come on Avril. I need some sad angry songs”, and literally over half the album was love songs. We were so confused because the title just did not match up with the songs at all. I mean Goodbye Lullaby and it’s full of love songs? I’ve been a huge Avril fan since I was little and even I could tell something wasn’t right. I’ve always said that there’s another half to this album her record label replaced with what we got originally. It’s honestly sad too because she’s proven herself multiple times as a song writer and she didn’t get the opportunity to make something she could put her heart and soul into completely until Head Above Water.
I appreciate that! I thread my opinion in from time to time but it's a lot more beneficial to see the facts, and explore the different avenues of what those facts mean and how it relates to an album's performance. And wow, that you for sharing that personal story of yours, I can only imagine the shock your sister endured 😅 "HAW" really showed a lot of great moments from Avril.
She herself stated in an article with Billboard I think it was,that she wasn't trying to chase radio hits. Most of her albums peaked in the top 5 with two #1 albums. I don't know people say its a flop whenever artists don't hit #1. You don't always have to be #1.She's still done well. The streaming era has made it tough for older artists to get chart success.Avril Lavigne is a legend.

Low promotion, RCA fucked up the album by releasing What The Hell a Girlfriend 2.0 for a mellow acoustic pop rock album and subsequent singles weren't properly promoted.

Edit: after watching this video,it makes sense why this record underperformed.. the label was being a b*tch and didn't want her to release more authentic music...
I feel so bad that Avril had to face this type of label battle. She is the definition of an icon and a childhood Queen (for me at least)
She is the first person I have ever stanned and will continue stanning her because girl has talent and breath taking visions 🌲❤️
"Not Enough", "Goodbye" and "Everybody Hurts" are probably my favorites from that list. I honestly think they're so powerful and emotionally moving. And I know! I really would like to know the intimate details of the battle between her label and what all they were trying to pull.

Music is subjective. But to my ears, this is by FAR Avril's greatest album. Love the whole thing from the beginning to end. Really touching and moving and rocking and melancholy and fun.

I’m pretty sure she was forced to release “what the hell”. It’s a common practice in music industry. A lot of singers can’t actually choose their own songs/singles.
Yeah, it's really unfortunate. I can't imagine wanting to say "no" to a single being released...and your career's future basically depends on it.
This is my fave of all her albums. This really resonates to me emotionally.

Gonna press play now, but have my theory abt that already ahahahha the marketing/label abt this era was completely wrong, she said in many interviews that it'd be a more acoustic album, focusing on her vocals, raw instruments, personal lyrics etc etc, the photoshoot going with this vibe, but the 2 first singles (WTH and Smile) were nothing like ppl were expecting (the label called Max Martin in the end of the process to give her some mainstream hits)...so she sent mixed messages

RCA is the only one to blame for Goodbye Lullaby not being a huge album. That's it. They screwed up from the minute they didn't allow Avril to fully express her vision for the record.
In a lot of interviews Avril did in that era you could see how frustrated she was by the label executives.
I STILL can't get over the fact that "Push" and "Everybody Hurts" weren't singles :(((

It’s honestly my top 3 faves from her and it’s so good I don’t dislike a single song from it and it has some of my faves from her!
There are some real gems on the album for sure!
Wish You Were Here may not have peaked high on the hot 100 but the number of views it had on TH-cam at the time, and the cultural impact it had internationally made it a hit.
Despite all of this. goodbye lullaby is a timeless record in my opinion and possibly even her best...
It was one of the first records I listened to completely, when I was 7 years old, and it’s stuck with me even until now, being 17.

One of the first cds I ever bought. This album really is amazing.
I think it was one of the first of hers I fully listened to. I became a fan around her fifth album in 2013 and began listening backwards through her discography and really found fondness for "Goodbye Lullaby".

She's one of my favourite musicians. Her songs put me into the emotion and the badass mood. "What The Hell" is a really awesome single from "Goodbye Lullaby". I don't understand why people always do stuff like this. It's sad and depressing. They don't deserve it. Also, can you please do about Nelly Furtado and her music like "The Ride" and "The Spirit Indestrictible" or her success album "Loose". I would like to watch.

This is my favourite album of hers tbh. There's such a beautiful sincerity to the album's lyrics, sound and album cover and photo shoot.
It's a shame I've seen some people deride this album when I personally think it was better than the self titled album that followed.

This was my first AL album I listened to. It’s not fully perfect but I still love it and it gives me so much nostalgia listening to it. I heard about record issues but Jesus this is just sad.

What the hell and Smile we’re gems. They didn’t get the chance at success as her earlier music. I actually think the best damn thing was her worst release to date.
Honestly, I'm not sure what my favorite era is of hers. I honestly have to be in the mood to listen to "The Best Damn Thing". While I love a good amount of the record, some of it is just wayyyy too harsh for me. Like girl, why are you so angry 😅
@@popdissected4400 Honestly “Under my Skin” is my favorite release of hers. There is not one bad track and my happy ending is pretty much my theme song even now lol. If her record label wasn’t so eager to ruin her career she’d of had even more success. Her “childish” pop hits are fun (what the hell, rock n roll, smile) but she has depth no one wants to give her credit or a chance to use her voice in the way she wants too. Everything after TNBT has been an exercise in how to make a pop star become irrelevant.

Facts ✋
She's also one of my favourite artists & this is one of my favourite AL albums. It's obvious she's wanted to focus on my serious, poetic, mature & emotional music for many years - much of it either acoustic or piano based, but her label always forced the teenage punk princess brat image on us. I sometimes feel like I'm more a fan for her albums. That's where the best songs are, minus The Best Damn Thing tbh. I feel like that album is mostly good for two ballads (Innocent & When You're Gone) & the rest is like girly, cheerleader pop filler. It's my least listened to album.
Her latest album appears to have finally escaped the curse, minus Dumb Blonde, which was a kinda 😬 moment.
I wish she had more of an opportunity to escape the label forced on her & be seen more as a serious, mature, talented songwriter & artist.
She's stuck between two images & it's time she had an album free of her older AL3 image. She's 36 years old, now, & it's not the early 2000's. Push, Not Enough, Stop Standing There & Alice are my fave tracks. Also, Falling Fast form her self-titled! 💖

Great video!!!but as a hardcore fan, there are some mistakes in this video I need to point out
1. He Wasn't wasn't released in the US and Fall To Pieces was released only in North America with no physical release and no music video. So it's actually not great to say Under My Skin didn't produce consistent hit singles. My Happy Ending was a massive hit worldwide, Don't Tell Me was a hit as well.
2. The single The Best Damn Thing was only released in Brazil and some European countries, that's why it ain't charting back then.

Thank you for this video. Nowadays a lot of content is made about Avril's first two or three records and how she changed the music industry, especially now that the generation who grew up listening to her music is now in their twenties and thirties. However, not enough people talk about what happened after and why she fell out of the spotlight. I'm glad you talked about it.
To be completely honest, yes, I blame the record companies but also... I just don't think Avril was good enough to stay relevant. I've fallen a little out of love with her over the last few years. Her lastest two records felt really underwhelming, although having a handful of really good songs each. Maybe it's me, maybe I'm just harder to please nowadays, but I feel like many female artists inspired by her became better that her and Avril just can't keep up.

She got hits till 2013-2014 and had a massive performance in 2015 on the 1989 World Tour with Taylor Swift. She's still relevant and about to release a Pop Punk album in the Summer of 2021. She took a break from 2014-2018 and she came back during the streaming era. Times have just changed. She's still relevant.

Man, this album is so special to me. It’s my all time fav album. It’s sad it had potential but they just wasted it. On the bright side, all this failure thing makes the album even more personal to the fans and Avril herself I believe

I saw a photo of Rca's documents on Avril's album which was due out in 2009 and be called Crash and Burn. He had a few songs from GL and others that we haven't heard before. They were mostly written by Avril, Evan, and Butch Walker and others.

I freaking love Goodbye Lullaby, I think it's in second place behind Under My Skin. And I want to go on the record saying her self titled album is seriously underrated! Funnily enough, I have never ever liked The Best Damn Thing. And I've been a fan since the first album.
Tbh I'm not a huge fan of The Best Damn Thing as much too. I mean, there are some good songs but I prefer her more emotional and angst music

New Pop Punk single drops April/May 2021 with a Pop Punk album in the Summer of 2021. She's working with Blink182 drummer and bassist Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus respectively as well as Machine Gun Kelly,ModSun,Marshmello and producer John Feldmann.
I always flip-flop with my rankings, but right now her 5th album is up there in the top spots. I enjoy it more than "GL", despite it having some beautiful tracks. "Everybody Hurts" is really beautiful.
@@popdissected4400 the problem with GL with me is that yeah, some songs are pretty like goodbye, 4real and darlin but they drag on if that makes sense. It's like I'm listening to the same song idk if it's too many background vocals or not enough lyrics speaking of not enough I just feel like it repeats and normally I dont mind repetition in a song.

RCA is the reason why! They always have issues with albums that don't follow the trends (see "My December" by Kelly Clarkson). Goodbye Lullaby is the first album that I bought and my second fav from Avril : Not Enough, Remember When, Push, Stop Standing There, Wish You Were Here, Smile, Everybody Hurts, Darlin... There's no skip on this masterpiece! 💚

I also think RCA didn't really understand Girlfriend and what made it a hit. I love Avril, but WTH and Smile are pretty basic pop songs, where Girlfriend and The Best Damn Thing (the album) were rooted in pop punk and had a very unique sound (who else was doing the pop punk cheerleader sound?) The songs the label wanted didn't fit with the album and didn't even fit with Avril, and I think would really go on to derail a lot of her next albums too.

this is one of my favorite albums of all time but the single rollout was so bad. first What The Hell doesn't belong on this album. second the lead should have been Push. Smile would have been refreshing and nostalgic feeling as a second single then. i also think Darlin' would have been a good third single, and ending the era with Goodbye is perfect imo
