Re-Imagining Katy Perry's "Witness"
Katy Perry’s “Witness” is an album that divides fans and critics. We know the album wasn’t received too well and brought with it a lot of disagreement. While I won’t go into these issues in this video, as I’ve covered them in separate videos, we will be looking at the album’s rollout and what way it could have been improved.
The singles from the album, “Chained to the Rhythm”, “Bon Appetit” and “Swish Swish” are regarded by some as the reason this album suffered. If your singles don’t represent your album accurately in the eyes of the listener, they’re not going to be fully invested.
So in this video, we’re going to theoretically go back in time to the release of “Witness” and think of different single options or campaigns Katy could have used to reshape the era differently, attempting to offer it more success.
While this will be a lot of speculation and hypotheticals, let’s see if we can develop a realistic plan. Now, you may love the existing singles and be happy with the era as a whole, which is okay, and this video isn’t to say there’s one right way this album could have gone.

Honestly ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ was the only one that I felt was an actual good choice from the official singles of witness so I definitely am glad you made it the second choice. And I agree with putting’Rise’ as the first single. I feel like the worldwide live stream wasn’t a bad idea either tbh. All in all I love the plan and reimagining you did great job.
I love this perspective! I feel like Lover by Taylor Swift could have been had a massive impact if the choice of singles and roll out was better. Cruel Summer as a single definitely, and releasing The Man too late as single was a mistake. Any chance you could you do a video on this?

Lover is her most underrated album
"Lover" had SO much potential and was cut short partly due to the pandemic. Allegedly, "Cruel Summer" was a single and was going to come out, but given the climate at the time, it would have been in bad taste. I LOVE this idea, and as a huge Swiftie, I will take you up on this offer!

My re-imagining of Witness would be:
1. Keep the mid-long blonde hair
2. Release Witness as the first single (and tease it weeks before release) and promote it with cool visual music video
3. Chained to the rhythm should be release as a promo single
4. Remove Bon Appetite from the album and add Rise instead (since it's suppose to be purposeful pop)
5. Swish Swish as the 2nd single BUT music video by another director with better visuals and high fashion and don't try to be funny (create some easy dance move for TikTok instead)
6. Make amends with Taylor Swift sooner BUT after Swish Swish was release lol
7. Don't do the live stream thing instead do some random surprise performance anywhere around US and do acoustic version of some songs
8. Roulette as the 3rd single and release a remix ver. with some rapper or a female singer
9. Don't host the MTV VMAs it's embarrassing and perform Witness and Swish Swish (don't hired those weird Meme people instead dance a little with 10 backup dancers) at SNL
10. Miss You More as the 4th single and final single
Said this before, will say it again Chained to the Rhythm is Katy's one of the best songs (probably her best lead single).....

Her latest single When I'm Gone was so catchy and good and it still flopped. It's crazy how quickly her career nose dived overnight. I think she's done in terms of mainstream success.

It's ridiculous her last few singles like when I'm gone, never really over and 365 plus almost every song from smile were fantastic.

Gaga self sabotaged that era by letting stupid love get leaked, waiting forever to acknowledge it. She went radio silent again until rain on me only to leave that song and the album unpromoted to bring attention to blm + covid.
Months later she surprise dropped 911 only to do the bare minimum for it.

FR 911 barely got promoted. Replay and Babylon could’ve been singles after 911 for standard album, Free Woman and Fun Tonight could’ve been singles for Dawn of Chromatica.

I really love what you did, i agree on quite everything you said and i like your choice of singles. I also think even after these changes Witness wouldn't be that big, but it would do definitely better than it did and it wouldn't destroy ground for Smile.

RISE was also blacklisted by Spotify because it was an Apple Music exclusive. It wasn’t added to big playlists until a MONTH IN.
I was alittle surprised. Katy came out with such force. It was interesting to see her hit making decline. For me, I expected witness to be like prism and teenage dream. I was alittle disappointed. A lot of fans also noticed that she tried to edge up or change her look. We already had Miley and lady Gaga, so it was like eh? Her career pattern reminded me alot of Ashley Simpson. Chained was good but it was out way too early before the witness album debuted. Swish Swish we’re some decent songs but I felt like they were both missing the impact that lady Gaga and Beyoncé had going for her. Im glad that smile did well for her!

absolutely love this! i have a suggestion: positions by ariana grande. i loved your sweetener-thank u, next video, and even though positions by no means didn’t perform well, it could’ve been such a bug era, and the general public might’ve seen what us fans see in this album if ari pushed some more songs as singles and/or did a little more promo. (plus, the album could come out later or earlier so she can tour or make trilogy albums.)

Positions is an album for fans, she finally did the sound she wanted to do and it doesn't really have much single-worthy songs, they all are very low-energy, moody tracks, i hope she got that trap mood out of her system already cause it was a bit tiring

I loved this video! I would love if you made one for Britney Spear’s Glory era. I’ve always wanted to see how others would approach it.
Being objective This album is okay at it’s best. It is not any hidden gem or underrated album. It has a couple of great songs, but it suffered from Katy being pressured to achieve ‘real artistry’, which is something totally subjective. she is way better with just sticking to catchy radio-pop songs, there are already artists that can provide us with more interesting music and it’s fine if Katy is not one of them. I do believe she will eventually get mainstream success again, not as much as on her prime TD/Prism eras but certainly if she pairs up with good producers, she will create bops.
Can we address how "Immortal Flame" would've been perfect to put on "Witness"? Not sure how she'd OK it with Square Enix, but it's amazing.
I wish you could do something like this for all 4 Sara bareillies albums who has been making great music & good songs since 2007 (but is very underrated & over looked in our 'ultra heavy female/sexual image' heavy Decade post Perry, Gaga, Swift, Nikki/Cardi, JLo, beyonce, miley, Riri etc)
Radios are obsessed with only playing her 1st single love song obsessively without any regard for the 50 songs that consistantly followed ( from little voice Kaliediscope heart, blessed unrest waitress & Amidst chaos) A Real damn shame.

February: Deja Vu (very moderate single; low budget video, almost promo single like, but it could have the same impact as a Delicate type of deal)

Oh this literally slays as a rollout!! Pendulum is one of my favorites and HAS the potential.
Can you do one for Emotion by Carly Rae Jepsen? It’s definitely one of the best synth pop albums of all time but it wasn’t big cause of the mess that was the promotion for it (thanks a lot Scooter Braun) and the fact that I Really Like You was the lead single (which sounds a lot like Call Me Maybe) and not the much better Run Away With Me.
Honestly any of the songs here can be singles lol. I would love to see music video ideas for them as well. (Also definitely recommend doing a video on Lover by Taylor Swift. Maybe Speak Now too since that one didn’t have much chart success other then Mine and Back To December despite being one of her best albums)
Great video as always. ❤️ I need to disagree with you on the single roll-out, tho. What I'm trying to say is that you've chosen many songs as potential singles, yet in 2016/2017 singles weren't force anymore. Due to streaming no one actually releases more than 3 to 4 songs as singles, because people stream the entire albums, hence it's pointless. I know Katy is a singles artist, but even if Witness hadn't underperformed, Capitol still wouldn't have released more than 4 songs as singles, because it would have been commercially unaffordable on their end. Nevertheless, I 100% agree that there should have been different songs released as singles. My picks are respectively Chained To The Rhythm, Bigger Than Me (I know many people dislike this track but I love it, it's so catchy, goes down so smoothly and has a cool message that ties with this album main theme of being strong and liberated despite many ups and downs in our lives; I think that radio programmers would have eaten up that track since it has this mid-to-late 2010s dark electropop sound with a minimalistic edge), Roulette (had she really wanted to present a sexual liberation, she should have dropped this in summer 2017 and it would have been a nice change of pace from Latin pop that dominated that summer), Miss You More/Save As Draft (either works for me, ballad would've made for an amazing fall 2017 single). Witness could've been dropped as a promo single with a cool lyric video that would have many Easter eggs to Katy's previous songs. Rise should have been included on the album as a bonus track and should've received a little stronger push from Katy to generate more hype about her then upcoming album.

Swish Swish - 4th Single (Just for the hype of Katy vs Taylor and because Nicki is featured)
Pendulum/Save As Draft - 5th Single (Either feels perfect to close out the standard release, Pendulum can have a church video, showing that she came back to her roots as Katy Hudson, Save As Draft can have a texting/tech video after a breakup. I personally prefer Pendulum because it fits with the theme of the album more.)
Dance With the Devil - Promo Deluxe Single (Maybe if she withheld the deluxe songs, they could be released separately like Wide Awake and Part of Me)
Tsunami (The Weeknd Remix) - 1st Deluxe Single (I feel like The Weeknd is perfect for the song, and if she got him, then it would’ve been a hit. They could have a beach theme video.)
Act My Age - 2nd Deluxe Single/Last Single (The video would be like a love letter to Katy Cats, as she time travels back to her older eras with the black hair and everything. It would be a perfect closure.)

this album era had so much potential. perform rise at 2016 dnc and the olympics. give it one last time push at GMA. go radio active slient on social media for a while until december 2016. close out with a twitter post on nye of 2016 with a snippet of new music. swish swish should be released as the lead on January 13th, 2017. perform it at a private fan event in NYC two days prior. do a countdown and a live q&a of the album. perform it on jimmy kimmel live and fallon. do it at the grammys and follow it up with the '17 BRITS Awards. march '17: release tsunami as the second single with proceeds going to victims of tsunamis. host a charity concert in Santa Barbara. perform at '17 radio disney awards and premiere a new single from witness. release bon appétit and do a pop up concert with them in ATL. release hey hey hey as a third and final single on june 2nd, 2017. give festival performances and interviews. release the witness album on july 14th, '17 by doing private parties and live streams. Do a tour from August '17 to February '18.
my witness rollout would be:
1. Rise - Lead Single (around the beginning of summer around april or may)
-Katy would announce Witness via. the political event to gain traction. (not the release date tho)
2. Chained To The Rhythm - June/July release during summer.
•She would drop the remixes to support and gain some boost for the single to rise up the charts.
3. Witness (The Album)/Deja Vu - August release in MTV
•She would perform a medley for Rise/Chained To The Rhythm in MTV, after the performance there would be an outro of the performance and she would come back with deja vu, then would release Witness after.
4. After the release of witness she would announce the tour that would last from May 2017 to January 2018.
5. Witness - November release
•After the release of witness, she would drop the deluxe edition of witness to boost more sales for the album.
6. Roulette - May release before the tour starts to boost tour popularity.
7. Save As Draft - February 2018
•Save as Draft will officially close the era.
I would love to see a video re-imagining Britney Spears' Glory era, because for me, the era and the album both deserved better.

I just really have an issue with Roulette's chorus. I feel like there's something missing in it. Maybe it could've had some sort of a 2-part chorus like "Never Really Over" or something.

i love that album
In my mind here is how i always envisioned how witness could have been just as big as her past eras:
I think firstly, the overall theme of the era is off. I like the idea of her voice being the way she witnesses the world and the way we witness her (as it is symbolized in the album cover), but it could have been executed so much better. The best part abt katy perry as a pop star is that she is FUN COLORFUL AND EXPLOSIVE! She should have kept that for this era just like all her other ones. Therefore, i think a more “katy perry” album cover for witness would have been a huge step in the right direction. In terms of the singles, although chained to the rhythm is fun and very pop, i think witness would have been a great lead single. It is a VERY good song and would have been a great lead single with a killer music video. It has a new sound for her, but still is a great fit for katy. Then as a second single, she should have done chained to the rhythm because the message is pretty capturing of what the era symbolizes and its also a great radio friendly song. For third single I honestly think miss you more would have been amazing. Its such a beautiful slower song with beautiful lyrics and would have done well with good promotion. Given the success of those three singles she could have probably done a 4th and maybe even a 5th single, like pendulum or roulette (both radio friendly radio songs with potential, and maybe she could have put a nicki verse in one of those songs instead of swish swish). and then at some point in the era, even tho not as realistic, she could have done dancing with the devil with taylor swift! That would have been so mf COOL especially since that very year taylor was abt to release reputation, and both have a darker sound that give off similar vibes.
This might be very far fetched BUTTTTT i think it could have been done! Its sad because witness is not a bad album at all! Just the single choices and execution of the theme was so weak! Especially given katy’s status as a FUNNN and upbeat pop artist.
Witness deserves justice
How I would have done it
1st Promotional single to introduce the era: Witness (s). I would send Witness (s) to the radio for about 10 weeks (I am not sure how radio works LOL). I would put Witness and Rise in a vinyl together to boost sales with 1 or 2 remixes, I think Rise and Witness complement each other.
1st Single: Roulette LOVE this song and it isn't a dramatic jump from her previous work but keeps the theme of Witness as a whole.
2nd Promotional single: Hey Hey Hey with the release of Roulette I would release a vinyl with a bonus track hey hey hey and send it to the radio for a bit. The song is good the MV ruined it of course.
2nd single: Bigger Than Me a really good song actually I would release a remix and feature remix.
3rd single: Power I think these 3 singles all align with each other really well and sell a consistent and connected concept of the album.
Lead single: Chained to the Rhythm, not a bad song never was a bad song one of my fave lead singles.
5th single: Save as draft
Deluxe promotional single: Dance with the Devil.
- I would not release Deja vu and Tsunami as promotional singles even though they are some of my faves because I want to leave a surprise for when people listen to the full album.
- Bon appetit would be solo

2nd Promo Single: Safe As Draft (25th November) (peak prediction: around 70 maybe?)
3rd Single: Roulette (27th January) (23rd January Album + Single Announcement) (peak prediction: top5 easily)
Album Release (10th March)
4th Single: Swish Swish (19th May) * (peak prediction: top40, maybe even top20 after all of this)
Collaboration Single: Feels (15th June) * (peak prediction: 20 like it did in reality)
Witness Tour Begin (late June or early July)
5th Single: Bon Appetit (Remix feat. Ariana Grande) (4th August) (peak prediction: Top20 definitely, top10 probably)
6th Single (Last Single): Hey Hey Hey (20th October) (peak prediction: around 70 probably, not much expectations)
So i like your idea that start era with Rise, i'd make it something like Prologue to era, she would perform it on that Democratic thing she did, on VMA's and some other places like Ellen Show or Jimmy Fallon Show or something. Then Witness as promo single is great choice, right before IHeartradio and ITunes festivals like you mentioned. Give it some kind of retrospective video about Katy's past, something cool but simple. Then week after festivals release Chained To The Rhythm and perform it on AMA's other places like Jingle Bell Ball, Jingle Ball and other, give it some big promo. Then release Safe As Draft as promo single to show different side of the album with simple video. Week before Grammys announce album and Roulette as next single and then perform it on Grammys and Brits, GMA and more. I'd really focus on Roulette and really push it as hard as possible, because Roulette has biggest chance to became a hit. I even have idea about video, starting in Vegas in casino and Katy will cross ways with Mafia or will be boss of mafia and she'll here show her new image. Then do big promo with interviews and teasing album in lots of ways like playing snippets make that livestream. I'd release album in March, it was originally released in June but that would be too late, especially after all these teasing. Then after album release go on little bit of hiatus and focus on planning tour. Come back in May with Swish Swish and next single, give it some promo before going on tour, but with better video, that MV is one of biggest reasons why it tanked. This new video would has bad bitch vibe, having fun, it'd be very cool but also funny. After release of Feels go on tour, and then in early August release Bon Appetit Remix featuring Ariana Grande. Album version would be without Migos, because nobody liked them on it anyway. Song is not bad but it just needs something to add and that something is Ariana Grande, even without much promo because of touring it would do fantastic because of power of their names. Only what she would do is perform it on VMA's and that's all. And then in October end era with Hey Hey Hey as last single, it's feminist anthem it's perfect song to end era. Tour would last probably to around June 2018 like it happened in reality. And then there is song 365 with Zedd she released in February 2019, it sounds really similar to Witness album, so i'd release it on Witness's anniversary and it would be final goodbye to Witness Era before starting new era.
I felt like her saying it was “purposeful pop” was a mistake because the singles choices didn’t align with the message. I felt like having “Rise” would have spoke for itself for the direction of her next album. I don’t think it needed to be the album. The singles I would have chosen would be: chain to the rhythm, save as draft (before the album release with snl performance and video), Roulette (with a massive music video), Bon Appetit (have this remixed to gain more traction) and finish the album with miss you more.
I really loved that album too.

Okay here’s my take:
Leave Rise as a one off single. Love the song even more than Roar. I just feel it would be out of place in my personal opinion
The first Single would be Roulette. Not my favorite on the album but it sure is a bop and still love it. This would be a summer song fun bop. Also, Roulette would feature some famous rapper. Roulette would peak at #2.
Then CTTR would be released. It would be well promoted like the things you mentioned in the vid. It would do better than how it performed in real life. And it would peak at #1.
Swish Swish would be released. It would be a fun song. It wouldn’t have much longevity but would still perform pretty well. Who doesn’t love some good Nicki. It would peak at #2
Witness would be next. Love that song. It would be received not as well as CTTR, but would have more longevity than Swish Swish. It would peak at #2.
Deja Vu would be next. It wouldn’t have much longevity but would perform decently. Deja Vu would also include a rapper like Drake or something to boost sales. It would peak at #6.
Power would then be released. Unpopular I know, but I like this song a lot. It would have a really cool music video. It would be an overall good song. It would peak at #4.
Finally with the special edition of Witness 365 would be released. Bloody great song. It would do moderately good just a little worse than Power. It would peak at #4.
Witness reminds me a lot of Bionic by Xtina.
lol I love the mid 2010s, not for the no pop girl thing lol but because a lot of the new acts seemed so authentic and uplifting.

This is my version of witness So let's say that while in 2014 before witness there was prism and there was a song that wasn't released blackwidow so if she didn't release it saved it.so now let's go to 2016 people started rumors about a new Katy Perry album. So now let's say black widow was her lead single it probably would have been better than iggy azalea one .black widow becomes No.1 on billboard and than releases chained to the rhythm become No.4 this probably would have been better for witness and than she release the other songs .

1. honestly, the success of the album was based on the katy perry hate train more than the singles although the singles provided the fuel for the hate. the success of an alternative rollout would depend a lot on if the hate train was combatted or never happened.
2. more pop singles. pendulum, tsunami, and roulette would’ve been great. i feel like tsunami could’ve been a big hit because of how different and unique it is. maybe that’s me placing too much faith in tsunami but with a good music video i think it could do well. as dance with the devil should’ve received a dark satanic music video for publicity and promotion.
