The fact that they purposely released "Firework" for it to peak during new year is just genius
and 4th of july
🤯
i live in hong kong and every new year we have a firework show. I watched it over a live tv broadcast back in like 2010 and "firework" came on. That was how I was introduced to Katy and pop music.
and released TGIF featuring Missy Elliot in a much lower price to boost sales and ended up became this album’s 5th number one.
And don't forget with california gurls which was released near summer, so that it became the biggest summer song in 2010
It’s an era for the history books. I can’t believe it’s 10 years old.
Absolutely!
Katy perry's teenage dream era was the time where music was fun, vibrant, dance-pop oriented, maximalist, and mostly about partying and having fun. Nowadays music is more minimalist and trap-oriented, also somehow more personal and mellow. But yeah that's how music history works, a genre is born, then it's getting popular and reached its peak, and soon it's declined, but it's never died
Yeah
I feel like this Era lasted from 2008 (with LG's "The Fame") to 2014 (with TS's "1989")
And of course we shouldn't forget about Britney's "Blackout" in 2007, who influenced most of these albums
Then, I feel like music started getting boring in 2015-2016
Lorde's "Melodrama" in 2017 tho 👌
@@dc9067 I think 2015 was still decent to me, 2016 was were music was getting different and 2017 was finally I recognized its differences
@@mbmd_nation yeah
Taylor Swift and Katy Perry for example, they both went with darker concepts for Reputation and Witness in 2017
Also Lady Gaga with Joanne in 2016, she went with a more country/ballad style
i hate that now everything has to be rap trap by default ..sucks
@@dc9067 ugh now that I think about it, I really didn't care for 2015-19 for pop music. It indeed got REALLY dark, production cold/lifeless. I can sense its starting to warm up and become fun again.
The fact that her first song from that album was “Teenage Dream” and she closed it with “Wide Awake” meaning that she had awoken from her dream to move on is Iconic
ICONIC. YES
I have listened to this album, end to end like, a billion times and that _never_ occurred to me. Good insight!
I never even though of that. That's genius
For me, because I was a teenager at the time, her lyrics and aesthetic resonated with me. I'm 27 and it just takes me back to high school, driving around with friends, no worries or responsibilities . It just perfectly sums up that time.

I will never forget this era of music. Teenage dream still remains my #1 Katy Perry song of all time it take me back to middle school era. I believe what made teenage dream successful was in the mindset of the electropop sound movement flourishing and you have to remember at the time a lot of pop stars in that movement had more darker and mature music and public persona including lady Gaga, Rihanna and Kesha. I feel Katy more colorful, friendly music and image made her more appealing and crossover
So true, Rihanna recently released Rated R and Lady Gaga and Kesha were occupying a heavier dancier sound. This was pure pop in the middle of the summer and a great change of pace
Yeah
I feel like this Era lasted from 2008 (with LG's "The Fame") to 2014 (with TS's "1989"), who was the last *pure pop* album.
And of course we shouldn't forget about Britney's "Blackout" in 2007, who influenced most of these albums

WE NEED A TEENAGE DREAM ERA TODAY
Smile should do the trick or bring it close
Enoch Posada very true. Love smile honestly. I’m so happy it’s such a strong album
Smile, in sound, videos and promotion is by it's very definition, the sequel to Teenage Dream. The difference, however, is that 'critics' and 'radio stations' have completely dropped her and bash Katy at every chance they get. If Smile was released in 2010, it would have the same impact on the charts as Teenage Dream. The singles from this era are spectacular, and in my humble opinion, her best cohesive album as a whole.

She was most definitely robbed for a Grammy award this woman has many number 1’s and diamond singles .
She competed with lady gaga and other emerging big stars during the time tho but still she's Robbed BIG TIME
She’s doesn’t have a Grammy?? Not like Grammys really matter anymore, but what ??
kyle no she never won one which is crazy cause she has multiple number 1’s and diamond singles the woman has worked hard and put out recent pop hits
Unknown User I just hate how everyone walks around now and just ignoring the fact that Katy Perry was a huge part of their childhood (at least mine) even though I was 5 I remember waking up and watching her music videos on mtv. Like the disrespect she gets now is disgusting.
@kyle I know people say that she is boring even though we all loved her.
I mean, that album is just a masterpiece, it’s mostly naughty but it’s so sugar coated that you couldn’t tell at first glance, it was and still is one of the most genius albums out there

Twitter also played a huge part in the Teenage Dream album's success. Katy and her team were constantly engaging with fans and made a big deal of countdowns to singles and music videos. Best era ever!
Yesss! I didn't even think about that!
Pop culture was at peak in between 2008-2014, artists were birthing hitss without even tryingg
Agreed!! 100%!
I believe her relationship with Russell Brand during the Teenage Dream-era also contributed to her success. She went from the early days of being a single woman ("California Gurls") to falling in love ("Teenage Dream"), to realizing her worth ("Firework"), to deepening her infatuation ("E.T"), to having a wild celebration anthem ("Last Friday Night"), to having a moment when she missed her first love (assumed to be Travie McCoy - notice Perry's styling reverted to the One of the Boys-era in the flashbacks of the video of "The One That Got Away"), to then falling out of love with her current lover and breaking up ("Part of Me"), to coming to terms with the growth and development of self as she healed ("Wide Awake"). All the while, each of these steps were mirrored in her own relationship/marriage/divorce with Russell Brand. She Taylor Swift-ed herself in real time during her record cycle, and we were there, rabid and titillated, watching the drama unfold with glee as we ate up her sonic emotional experiences. I think if she had stripped "The One That Got Away" to an acoustic version, it would have topped the charts; the performances by Richard Marx and Selena Gomez proved that song could stand on its own merits as a bare piece, and it was a missed opportunity.
Wow!! This is so well explained. I totally agree! So fascinating to think about.

Katy is a great example to follow, she was too poor, she didn't even have money to go to him dentist (that's why he doesn't have straight teeth) but she kept fighting, closing them her 5 labels, many albums didn't come out because the labels canceled the project, but when I got to Capitol record she was able to set her record after years of fighting, she has 9 #1 the best-selling era, she has the same record with pop king Michael Jackson , Firework is the best-selling female song (Firework is a anthem to love you yourself because you're perfect to Your way) (In conclusion she is an example to follow, she had nothing, her way was very hard, but I fight for her dreams, you can do it too)
And witness are good but.... People dont Like That she's cup her hair and put yellow (the original color of her hair)

The Fame Monster
The fame monster too

Landiana love not as iconic or as certified as teenage Dream. Gaga is a legend in her own right, but as a whole teenage Dream was more successful
umm what about Loose by Nelly Furtado !?
that was an amazing time for pop, Katy, RIhanna, Gaga, Beyonce, Kesha amazing time!
2008 - 2014/15 was an amazing time for all those girls. I think it was arguably the peak of pop music!
We need someone who could at least hold a candle to this era.
The Fame Monster Era beats it no questions asked. Gaga spawned 3 iconic singles from that era (more if she wanted to release more singles), with the lead Bad Romance going on the reach diamond. Every music video is still an iconic piece of art, and the tour, which lasted only 6 months longer than the California Dreams Tour made over 4 times as much money, with a box office of around $224 million (that’s what Wikipedia says, and yes I checked the box office of the California Dreams tour which is around 59 million. I was really shocked, honestly I thought it was a mistake). Every single song on that album reached the top 10 in at least one country. (Minus speechless and teeth. Speechless without being a single reached into the Hot 100, which is not easy to do. Teeth is just so different but it still charted I think in Hungary). Not to mention it sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The Fame Monster beats Teenage Dream undoubtedly. But I still love both and both were my childhood, don’t hate either.
@@theodoe946 we have a gaga fan here
@@theodoe946 Duh TD itself has more hits than gaga's career
@@RyanlovesTh he wasn't wrong tho
You're just biased
I don't understand why LMs hate Katy and always drag her...... Since they think that Gaga is better than Katy so lemme clear that ...
1. Katy sold more records(Album+singles) both according to RIAA certified sales and SPS worldwide methodology. Teenage Dream is the Best Selling Record Of All Time beating Michael Jackson's Thriller...She
Is one of the best selling artists of all time. TD sold more than 65 million records while others didn't even cross 50m, So I think that's clear that Katy sold more records and Singles.. In albums Gaga sold a bit more just because She has 6 albums and TFM is two albums combined so plz stop thinking its better than TD..... There are so many sales records she broke that I can't even list them all so go check them yourself if it's hard for u to understand this...
2. Coming to streams Katy outstreamed her on every single platform... She is one of the most streamed artists of all time with over 45 billion streams and Gaga isn't even present on those lists.... Again there are many records in streams but I won't be listing them.
3. Coming to chart success as u must know Katy ranks at 25th on the greatest artists of all time while Gaga is somewhere in 90th rank or even below... Katy has more No. 1s and More Hits than her. She has better chart history without even much collabs whereas Gaga had to collaborate with Ari and BP right now too.
4. Coming to Tours TFM tour was combination of 2 separate album reissued as one but technically there are 2 albums which she performed so obviously it had to gross more Than CDT. Prismatic World Tour grossed over 204m dollars and that was also a solo album but Gaga's highest grossing solo album your was BTWT which grossed over 180m dollars so Katy grossed more as solo she didn't merge s two albums to get a hit....
5. Coming to Popularity and Impact because LMs think that Gaga is the most popular person on the planet even more than Jesus... Katy has a bigger fan following on every platform.. Go check it out if ur doubtful.
Coming on impact Katy didn't make Satanic and Demonic Songs she always made Something that every age can enjoy... TD is the most influential era of 2010s and So many artists are influenced by Katy like Ari, Dua and many more so she's more impactful ....
Ending this now hope I broke ur delusion down to pieces now stop Hating On Katy and move on or support ur fave.. ❤
Have a good day cuz my fave always taught the world to spread love and kindness ✨😊
Teenage Dream isn’t even over yet. I’m still streaming it to this day. 🤟

I’m glad Katy Perry reached the peak early in her career instead of trying to out do herself try after try after try like other artists, she acknowledges that what she did is really successful, and took time for her mental health and create her loving family + she is kind and motherly towards her fan base, a true pop star.
The songs "Teenage Dream" and "California Gurls" alone are some of the most iconic moments in pop music. Summer of 2010 is so memorable because of those amazing songs.

yes exactly, it was also the time in life. the world was different when Teenage Dream dropped, we were young, we were dumb. we didn't have to hear about politics and racism everyday. the world wasn't perfect back then, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it is now...that's why it's called teenage dream, because we were young and things were carefree!

This is THE ERA for Katy
THEEE ERA. Other girlies wish their careers could be as iconic as this record alone!
The album is like a time machine if you guys gets me.
I totally get that!
They don't do it like this anymore! Not only did streaming turn the music industry upside down, but I also think that pop girls just don't try as hard as they could and don't put that much effort to create like a distinctive and memorable era... Dua's FN era is hailed as the best pop era since quite some time, but it's nothing compared to eras such as Teenage Dream, The Fame + Monster by Gaga, Loud by Riri or Animal+Cannibal by Kesha...
teenage dream era literally lasted my entire high school experience lol california girls came out the end of my freshman year and wide awake came out the beginning of my senior year

Pop Dissected thanks for responding, truly appreciate it / your channel !
Imo the success can be attributed to a multitude of things. The most obvious is the genius pairing of Dr. Luke & Max Martin with the amazing lyricism of Katy and Bonnie McKee. Besides the singles specifically, the album as a whole has a *very* strong visual & thematic motif -- i.e. things connected with the teen life stage which automatically gets the target demographic of consumers hooked, but it also resonates with young adults and adults in general as many of the songs capture that longing and a sense of nostalgia for easier times gone by. The album encapsulates so much from first loves, self-acceptance, breakups, abusive relationships, to plain old partying & feel-good anthems. The true genius of the era (for me anyway), however, lies in the very special and one-of-a-kind promotional cycle that turned every single song into an event with its own unique visuals and aesthetics. It's literally successful album era 101. Katy not only reinvented herself with Teenage Dream the album, she was reinventing herself with every single song she put out, and I think she was able to do that because the album itself is not very cohesive (as was mentioned in the video); all of the songs are bops but they're more like these self-contained universes, so each of the songs sounded fresh and new at the time of their release. I also feel like many people didn't really believe in Katy when the album was out. I remember people thought she'd flop after California Gurls, but then Teenage Dream came out and went #1, then Firework became a surprise hit, and then E.T. etc. she kept surprising people with the singles and she consistently kept setting the bar higher and higher.
Yesss!! 👏 So well explained!

One on "Joanne" th-cam.com/video/Y0sSgBAcUH4/w-d-xo.html and one on "Chromatica" th-cam.com/video/GGmzdb8Kpuo/w-d-xo.html
OMG. This is what I've been waiting for. Thank you.
😊 ❤️
I grew up with her songs,
Now I know She Never Makes us disappointed.
Katy is one of the most incredible singer all time.
Now She Just dropped a new album Smile.
The songs in her new album are still awesome, Easy listening.
She's lit.
yessss! ❤️
Teenage Dream came out when I was 12. Man to think of simpler times, hanging out at the park after school with friends and doing dumb shit like riding bikes to the beach and just having fun. This album will always have a special place in all our hearts.
Oh my gosh, you've brought back so many memories for me 😭 The way "Teenage Dream" built up millions of childhoods....woah
There is a point I want to bring up that you discuss in this video. When talking about the cohesion of the singles or simply the songs on the album as a whole. I will agree that if you listen to the album, song by song, you are right in saying that it is a bit all over the place in retrospect to the sounds, tempos, melodies and just overall pairings. But with that being said, I dont believe that it is due to the individual songs themselves whereas its the track listing. As someone who saw the "California Dreams" tour, the set list of that particular concert is quite honestly incredibly well done. So much so that there is a running theme and story that plays along as you experience the concert which directly shows how they (the songs) all have a viscidity with eachother. I just wanted to bring to light that its maybe not so much that the songs don't sound like they belong together when in actuality it may just be the way they are listed on the CD as proof by the concert.
I love this point you bring up! I've watched the tour on TH-cam and I couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing!
She is the real queen claiming the 5 #1 when streaming service was nearly no where leading the sales and Radio audience.. the real golden era of music ❤️
Exactly! These days, #1s can easily be obtained with streams. I'm not saying that isn't legitimate, but sales generally come from streaming equivalent units. Back then, you had to BUY records and songs, which makes it even more impressive!
It's funny, I'm very much glad to no longer be the person I was at the time, but I still really love the fun, bright, Teenage Dream era of pop music, and the big colorful personalities that came with it. I hope that style becomes more popular again!
Totally agree!
Saw you from Twitter and I'm glad I saw your tweet, I love this channel
Thank you so much 😊
Circle The Drain and Not Like The Movies we’re actually promo singles. So the only true non singles were Dressin Up, Who am I living for, Hummingbird Heartbeat, Pearl, and Peacock.
Hummimgbord Heartbeat is single acually
They were so good, I would honestly hope the era lasted 3 whole years yo include those
@Ber I will always be pissed that she didn’t break Michael Jackson’s record. While Part of Me was number 1 on the re release if they released peacock as a single it would have gone number 1.
"Hummingbird Heartbeat" actually released as a single in Australia! Wish it followed "TOTGA" prior to "POM" and "WA" though. But you're right! Honestly, that whole album could have been released as singles.
@Pop Dissected Agreed
y’all smile is good af. no skips
It's true!
MOST ICONIC FEMALE POP ERA OF ALL TIME
Legendary!!
Teenage Dream is one of the best pop songs ever released, no question
It's true!!
I remember we were only a bunch of 9-year-olds when it was released but when the music videos were released on youtube, we would watch it during our ICT class whenever the teacher isn't around. Lmao it was like an awakening to the pop culture world.
Right!? I remember that so vividly too in grade school 😂 I remember watching the "E.T." music video in class and everyone around was so shocked, yet so interested.
do a “what made “the pinkprint” by nicki minaj so succesful?”
I think it was because she really poured her heart in that album. It wasn’t about drugs and all that other stuff that people assume only women rap about. But she pretty much proved that she can write anything and with that she just put how she felt which is why it will always be her best album alongside pills n potions.
ANNA OOP u’re 100% right
YES! I'd love to!
@@popdissected4400 can’t wait to watch it :))
this was when teh other Gals started to hate her only rihanna was close to her because rihanna wasnt threatened lmaoooo
Missing Katy and Rihanna's friendship 😩
I was a sheltered child who thought the lyric about "skin-tight jeans" was so scandalous when it played at the middle school dance in 2010
Same here 😭 I remember watching the video for "Teenage Dream" when I was like, 11 and 😳 My friends that I was watching ... well...adult videos...
wide awake was the awakening from her teenage dream which i feel is very clever
RIGHT 😳 !
*Teenage Dream to this day people still listen to it, it's one of those albums that defined the decade you can't escape it* 💎
Facts!
I really hope KP6 will be just as good she came back to pop with smile but still she could do much better
Gosh teenage dream is an experience
These videos deserve more love, there so well made
Thank you so much!!
U like snd see every comment!you really appreciate your viewers man!
I do my best, even if I have to come back months later and reply 😅!
@@popdissected4400 haha i totally see you blowing up in a few months, your editing and quality is unmatched
@@chunli6197 Thank you so much 💞! And trust, it's coming soon 👀 Maybe not "The Pinkprint" but def a video on our queen Ms. Minaj
@@popdissected4400 haha good enough for me,all hail nicki🙏
“Teenage Dream” is my favorite album by her and one of my favorite albums of all time! I was 10 when it first came out and I got to hang out with it over this last decade! I keep coming back to it, and will always do so! It was successful because it’s indescribable nostalgia.
I was 10 as well! The nostalgia she created....unmatched.
Honestly she's the first artist that I knew when I was 3
Oh wow! 😱
i think it’s amazing that no one hates this album. if you play any of these songs in a car with your friends , everyone knows the words and they dont mind playing it through. life changing
So true!! I never had thought about that before!
Dude this era was truly one of her BEST, BESIDE SMILE (go stream!!) but this era is rlly similar to mariah carey's fmdebut album! We love queens!
YES!!
Bonnie McKee is the secret to Teenage Dream's success and the reason why Katy's music isn't the same.
Very good point! I wish I discussed her in the video 😳
Is it really 10 years old? I still can't believe. I still remember the time when "Teenage Dream" came out.
Same here 😩
I love the analysis!
Thank you so much!!!
that blue wig was a cultural reset. it was eccentric, aspirational and chic
AND IT WAS!
This album came out in grade 8. Which was also the last year I spent in my home town, being from cold rural Ontario we spent a lot of recesses inside during winter and we listened to this album a lot
It's so neat to hear so many people's memories connected to this album!! Thank you for sharing :D
I saw this woman live at the prismatic tour. Honestly speaking, it was the closest thing to a michael jackson concert, if not better.
Thank you Katy, cause I never got to see the king of pop live. But you gave me a taste of what could've been. Her concerts were out of this world!
That's so cool! I was fortunate enough to see her twice on that tour, and once on "Witness: The Tour". People can say what they want, but she can put on a SHOW.
This era was so much fun, we need more fun music, we love and appreciate the personal and intimate clever music, but like we need more fun.
Totally agree!
@@popdissected4400 I think that many pop artists are giving us many fun songs and records like dua lipa, the weekend, lady Gaga, ect
This is such an informative, detailed description, good job! 🎖❤️
Thank you so much!!!
@@popdissected4400 you’re welcome! 😇
