As you probably know I like to do a live stream every once in a while. I think it’s fun and I enjoy figuring out all the tech stuff necessary to make a stream happen. OBSBOT reached out to me to see if I wanted to test out their new ptz streaming camera, the Obsbot Tail Air. And while, as you know, shoot with Lumix mirrorless cameras, this 4K pan tilt zoom camera WITH tracking piqued my interest. They sent me the complete kit with three Tail Airs, ethernet adapters, NDI licences, remote controller and ND filters.
I have to admit, I was a bit sceptical at first, thinking it might just be a glorified webcam. But it’s much more than that and it’s absolutely packed with features. So, sit tight. Here we go.

The shifting in the image also happens with some of the gopro cameras as well.
I think it's just a streaming thing because it doesn't seem to happen with hdmi connection.

an awesome setup for webinars and other small but permanent studios.. not sure if i feel comft. putting those in my hard case.. got to reduce/rethink the setup then 🤔
i would love to see something like a base with the usual ports: HDMI (normal size), SDI, RJ45 (maybe POE?)
very tempting...but since i'm already in the switcher world, i just ordered two of those BM micro cameras to extend the existing setup ...
I would really love to see a Fullframe EVA ii... should not further think about any setup 🤐
I can see where you’re coming from. The Tail Air doesn’t fit every use case and the BM micro cameras are great from what I’ve seen.
A base for the Tail Air with HDMI, SDI etc. is a great idea. Right now, there is a base available, but that’s only for extended battery life and 360 rotation.

I'd imagine these are nice cameras for my workshop to follow me around doing things etc. A decent optical zoom would be additional killer feature for this.
Yeah, optical zoom would be great!
12:00 I think webcam's are particularly used in (relatively) low light. Almost always indoors, and rarely in such a good lighting as yours. ISo1600 is very much welcome.
Fair enough. I do think the average user could benefit a lot from learning a bit about lighting. It doesn’t have to be much or expensive to make a significant difference. I’m also planning on doing some lighting videos.
But, in any case, being able to use higher ISOs is definitely a pro to this camera and very useful. Thanks for watching!
@@RedFrameTech Absolutely agree. A nice lighting is much more affordable way to improve web/stream cam image quality than investing a fortune in a top-of-the-line camera.

It seems to over heat and shut down after 3 to 5 hours of recording. What is shuting it down and will not restart so I assume it is a heat issue.
I have not had that happen. Were you recording to the SD card? And what was the ambient temperature?
Have you reached out to OBSBOT? There’s a Tail Air Facebook group where you can tell them issues you find. They’re usually quite responsive in my experience.
whats the under mounting bolt size ? 1/4 M 20 ? no mention of that
That’s indeed the size of the mounting hole. Any regular tripod plate will fit
Do these come with a good return policy if they dont work well in the studio? I am very curious on these.

I'd like to use this for streaming our billiard matches at our club. The contrast and quality is important as well as the ability to focus on the front and back of the table without blur. What are you thoughts? Do you think this would be suitable?
I think it would be suitable. Focussing is easy when using the app. Just tap the screen to focus.
A few things to keep in mind though:
1 it’s digital zoom only, so image quality loss when zooming.
2 It needs light for good image quality.
3 If the subject is far enough away from the lens, most of the scene will be in focus anyway, because of the relatively small sensor and short focal length

Depending on the mode it’s in, yes
What the field of view of tail air
It has a 23mm ff equivalent lens, so I believe that would be around 75 degrees fov

I want to use it for sports with a firmware update of 120p frame rate!! You never said what the zoom max is and how well it tracks moving objects or how it will work!
I don’t think 120p is going to happen. Would be nice though.
And I did show how the tracking works and that it works well. But there was a lot to cover in this review video. I might do a separate one on just the tracking once I received the production unit.
Max zoom is 4x (digital).
@@RedFrameTech yeah so digital zoom is grainy and to what extent. The world ia crying for a good sports tracking camera from a distance. I can't believe it's 2023 with out a real one yet. Kinda mind blowing.
@@skyramafoil Agreed! I think it would be a very premium price though for a camera that can do what you want. I think the Tail Air does a good job for its price point
Can you connect wirelessly to obs ?
Yes. Easiest way to do that is via NDI

For streaming cam it is too expensive, for cam to make nice videos- too bad quality. Conclusion--what for it?
For an NDI enabled, PTZ, tracking camera, it's actually one of the less expensive options on the market. If it's just for talking head kind of streaming without tracking/movement or NDI, yeah, just get a webcam
