All too often we tend to guess and replace parts without knowing the root cause. I have actually had many mechanics operate like this. It's not their money, so why not? This is a valuable lesson in not only determining root cause (he actually checked and determined that the part was bad without guessing) but also to know how to verify the fix. This is what separates a mechanic from a guesser. Nice job!
This is a great, methodological presentation with feasible DIY techniques. You might also mention the potential deleterious effects of today's pseudo-gasoline, as it had on my old 2000 Explorer system. I had a large leak and checked all lines, replaced the front purge valve, cleaned and reinstalled the canister vent valve - to no avail. Having wanted to avoid lowering the gas tank, I finally checked the tank vent valve and its lower portion/check ball frame had been decimated by the gasoline. Replacing it fixed the problem.... ...for 6 months, at which point the ECL lit up with a code pointing at the canister vent valve. So I removed it and carefully disassembled it down to the valving components, cleaned them thoroughly and reassembled it. All has been fine for a year. Awesome video, and you make everything so easy to understand and follow! You are my go to guy from now on! Thank you so very much! My prayers have finally been answered! Wow I am so excited! 😊
Without having a prior understanding of EVAP leaks (OBD scan code P0456), this video saved me $200+. Most repair facilities insist on charging anywhere from $125-$150 to do a diagnostic check which may or may not include a smoke test and you have to wait 1-2 hours for the test to be completed. This video uses a common sense approach to diagnosing and resolving the issue. The replacement part for my 2012 Ford Escape 4 cylinder engine cost less than $20 on Amazon. TADA!!! Additional TH-cam videos also explained how to replace the item in less than 20 minutes.
Outstanding. Love the emphasis of "no need to shotgun the problem with parts or invest in expensive equipment, instead think!" I'm tshooting a P0442 problem and information in this video has been very helpful.
I am much better educated on this subject now that I watched this video. It’s like going to school to learn about evap systems. My Camry tripped the p0456 code the other day. Now I know a simple way to test parts. Thanks.
I like this olds mans videos. He’s very thorough and knowledgeable you can tell he’s been working on vehicles his entire life. Love it. Wish I knew a mechanic around where I live like this I would trust him to work on my jeep LJ. I do all my work myself though because mechanics are pos Jst trying to milk you for things you can figure out yourself by googling. Iv been trying to figure out a vacuum leak for a year now at least and have checked everything except for the rollover valves on the top of my gas tank and if I brought it to a mechanics without telling him what I have tested and replaced he would immediately say it’s the gas cap lol. Reason why I do things myself
Excellent video, just found out mine was leaking few hours ago, after fixing other numerous leaks. Like plugging a damn, fix one another starts. Hopefully it's the last one
this video is done very well by this man. i searched and searched on how to find a evap leak and how to fix it. most of the videos i saw were of people just talking about how to do it and thats it. this guys in this video actually goes into detail!! he also made me understand the picture in the first video that shows you the parts of the evap system, where to find them and know what they do. so yeah people this guys is good ha
I appreciate your thorough explanation of the system. As a DIYer I really can use your explanation so that I understand what I am doing and the right way to trouble shoot the system. Thanks.
A more in depth explanation of the actual steps the ECM performs during the EVAP test, and what signals and pressures it looks for would be extremely helpful.
Sir I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge. I was able to detect several vacum leaks on my son's blazer. Now his AC works!!! Perfect timing because today we are hitting highs of 109!!! Thanks again. I will be looking at all your vids.
Diagnosing this on a "new" old lexus. Ironically, it's the same way I fixed it on my pathfinder. By blowing through the purge valve.... No clue on why i thought the lexus would be any different, but this video shows, that I sometimes need to just go back to basics in thinking. Critical thinking has helped me solve problems in the past. I was literally about to go and pressure test the whole system, but I just had forgotten about checking the purge valve, which is the easiest to access first. thanks.
@@realfixesrealfast turns out.... after taking off the engine cover, the harness wasn't even plugged in. I love buying used cars. Keep in mind I already had changed all 4 02sensors. Still, it's challenges like this that make it fun.
Very good explanation. Especially like your diagrams. I am going to go look at some of the others. Thank you. I think you along with ChrisFix, EricTheCarGuy and ScottyKilmer have got me hooked on working on vehicles. Especially my Ranger which throws more codes than Bob Gibson threw baseballs. Thanks again.
Yes he is! I'm a novice. He explained this from the very beginning to the end! I've watched several videos trying g to understand the concept some were helpful but didn't go into detail like him! The video showed you the parts, how to test and explained what to do! I feel like I can take this task on and fix my own car now. But now I need a diagnostic computer to use my critical thinking! Thanks!
Super video. Thanks. After watching this I checked the purge valve I installed 3 weeks ago and could blow right through it. You saved me from going insane over my leak.
I took a course at a local repair shop by the shops owner on engine diagnosis and repair, OBD2, etc..and he stressed critical thinking skills in the garage. This is a great example of understanding how something works and using that knowledge to solve the problem. Anyone can replace a part, but diagnosing the problem is often 3/4 of the repair.
Fantastic educational video and Duane is an outstanding teacher. This man needs to be Wash, DC!! My gawd, the 200+ down votes here have to be NON-thinkers!! GiddyUp!!!
Fantastic video. A+ for resourcefulness and using the tools available to you, most especially your brain. The only caveat is having a computer to read the data from the vehicle and the knowledge to know what you're reading. Critical thinking sometimes relies upon a base level of knowledge to find the appropriate solution.
This is an excellent video, it really helped me to understand how to approach my EVAP Purge valve repair on my wife's 2000 mercury grand marquis. Thank you for the help!
Duane, As usual, a first class video. Your logic and common sense are unmatched. I have seen all of your videos and have to say that you are the class of the TH-cam auto techs. ScannerDanner, SMA, motoYam82 and Schrodingers Cat are sneaking up on you, but you still have them by a whisker. Thanks again for your exceptionally educational channel.
I really enjoyed watching your two part video. They are informative and helpful. I always strive to find the underlying stuff in life; whether it involves my vehicles or not. Thanks for the excellent productions!
Wow! A smart guy that can teach! Lots of pictures and explanations of your deductions. I have never run in to a problem with this system before. My '08 Prerunner with the V6 threw codes P0441 and P0445 this week, (96k miles). I tightened the gas cap but the CEL has not gone out in 2 short trips. I will erase them and test drive. I can also relax... I know the system now. That was sort of like watching a Sherlock Holmes movie… Not cute or vulgar. Just good thinking. Thank you.
You are still helping us out 6 years later. I immediately took off the purge valve and blew in it and found a leak. Code hasn't come back after it was replaced.
Very informative and helpful! Ive got an 04 f150 with the dreaded 5.4 3v that has tons of issues. One appears to be possibly vacuum related. Other day I noticed my fuel tank was under full vacuum (cap are hard to remove!) when was working on it so I believe the leak is pretty substantial.
Good Sir I want to commend you on not only your quite obvious expertise on the topic here, but also your (most appreciated by myself) direct and "to the point" delivery of the information via this production. The two videos total just over 20 mins run time which I skipped through with the arrow keys on my desktop keyboard in less than 15 mins. Well worth it.
I had replaced the purge valve on my 2007 Buick Lucerne about 3 months ago because it was stuck open I normally don't use anything but OEM parts, but GM was on strike at the time and I couldn't get the part, so I installed a Duralast from AutoZone and everything was good until recently when the tighten gas cap and engine light came on. I basically changed out everything in the system and still had a problem. It wasn't only after I saw your video that I pulled the purge valve out and tried sucking air through it and lo and behold there was small leak. Fortunately, the one that I had ordered from GM came in, so I installed it and everything works great. Many thanks! I don't know how long I would have chased this problem. The dealership sure couldn't find the problem : )
It's sad a dealership with a certified mechanic couldn't find a rather simple problem .... leaky valve. Its like fixing cars 101. I would find a new dealership. The good thing about this video is that he explains how the system works, stuff likely to fail and how to test the parts. As a mechanic, when something electrical doesn't work, you look first at the switches. When something leaks checking valves first makes sense. Not to say other things can't or don't fail but you have to start somewhere and you go to highest likelihood of issue first.
Thank you so much for this video. Financed a 2013 Lincoln MKX. Check engine light P0456 came on. Pepboys did a smoke test and said no leak found yet said my Filler neck tube needs to be replaced. Warranty company and I pay to replace part. Drive almost 300 miles filling up a few times no light. Go to start car in morning light back on. Came across your Video and asked Pepboys why they replaced a part that didn't need to be replaced because it passed the smoke test and then asked if Mechanic even checked the purge valve before performing a smoke test. Manager said mechanic is on vacation so he doesn't know. So manager said he would do a free diagnostic. Well I took it somewhere else since I don't want to void my car warranty by doing work on car myself. They checked purge valve for free because of a friend. Low and behold suction felt and light air when you blow. BAD PURGE VALVE. Called Pepboys and complained about poor mechanic work they said they will replace it for free. Thanks to your video I saved myself from replaceing a fuel pump that didn't need to be replaced. A simple fix that literally takes 5 min. to do and they couldn't even do that right.
Great instruction and explanation of the evap purge system. My Innova 3100j is telling me my 2008 Jeep Patriot N. 5spd manual trans. has a small evap error. The status light shows yellow, and my check engine constantly shows check gas cap even after clearing check engine codes. (I just put in a new gas cap.) My brother said he thought he detected light fuel fume. Thanks for your thorough survey.
I became a subscriber during the years that I didn't see any videos from you. I learned a lot from Suzuki Vitara series and the clarity I feel with this EVAP system thanks to this video series has really made things clearler for me. The most important clue I was missing was that the system would be closed and use the vacuum of the engine to test if it really was a closed system.
FWIW, I usually check a purge valve by unplugging the vacuum hose and electrical connector then starting the engine. Plug the vacuum port with your thumb and if it's leaking you'll feel it suck on your thumb. Alternatively, you can attach a vacuum gauge to the port in lieu of using your thumb. This way you can detect very minor leaks (you'll never be able to suck on that valve as hard as the engine does) and you don't have to get any carbon deposits in your mouth.
Really good explanation. Both videos were really good. Mine turned out to be numerous hoses were leaking. The car is a 1995 and the hoses were brittle, cracked, loose etc. Replaced 3 hoses at the Canister, two on the way to the Solenoid Purge Valve, and the actual EVAP Control Valve just before the Canister's Tank connection were bad.

Also changed the gas cap just in case.. Engine light off!! Yayyyy!!! 2005 Saturn Ion.. Over 150miles.. Thank you for being such a awesome teacher.. You are the best!!
Thank you for an absolutely wonderful insightful tutorial on an ever confusing topic, that eludes the best in the trade. please do continue to post more, 🙂
Just saw this, Great diagnosis, You sir are a credit to all of us, Not just a parts changer...That's how I work also!!
Glad it helped. Thanks for commenting
Thanks.
Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Glad it helped.
This was an extremely helpful 2 part video series. Informative. I appreciate the knowledge breakdown.
Glad it helped, thanks for your comments.
I can't thank you enough for these two videos. I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla with the PO440 and PO446 Codes, thanks to you I have a next step to take.
excellent video. I knew a lot about this system already, but this video really broke it down in easy to understand terms. Thank you.
Thank you for explaining clearly what a evap control system is because I am not a mechanic .
I was literally about to go and pressure test the whole system, but I just had forgotten about checking the purge valve, which is the easiest to access first. thanks.
You are welcome, thanks for commenting
@@realfixesrealfast turns out.... after taking off the engine cover, the harness wasn't even plugged in. I love buying used cars. Keep in mind I already had changed all 4 02sensors. Still, it's challenges like this that make it fun.
Very good explanation. Especially like your diagrams. I am going to go look at some of the others. Thank you. I think you along with ChrisFix, EricTheCarGuy and ScottyKilmer have got me hooked on working on vehicles. Especially my Ranger which throws more codes than Bob Gibson threw baseballs.
Thanks again.
Analysis, critical thinking equals the solution to the problem. Excellent video I learned a lot.. Thank You.
This man is absolutely freakin awesome at explaining things.
Thanks!
you are indeed the one....wish you live long and im so thankful enough to known this genius way of trouble shooting technique. thank u Sir!
Super video. Thanks. After watching this I checked the purge valve I installed 3 weeks ago and could blow right through it. You saved me from going insane over my leak.
Very imformative! Thanks allot for the video! I was completely lost trying to fix this problem on my truck till now.
Wow, that just gained me a lot of knowledge on these complicated EVAP leaks!!!! TY so much!!!
Thanks for your comments Scott. Yes, Critical Thinking is truly an art.
Thank you for commenting, glad it helped
I've missed these videos. Glad to see you back with another informative fix.

Duane,
As usual, a first class video.
Top-notch pro. Thank you for sending me (a 36 year Shade-Tree) in the right direction. 2000 Camry 4cyl, PO440 & PO442 small leak.
I really enjoyed watching your two part video. They are informative and helpful. I always strive to find the underlying stuff in life; whether it involves my vehicles or not. Thanks for the excellent productions!
I've watched a lot of videos, and this is the first that explains how the system works, and how to logically figure out the problem.
Thank you.
What a great video. This guy deserves every penny and more he is earning! Thanks for the help!
You are still helping us out 6 years later. I immediately took off the purge valve and blew in it and found a leak. Code hasn't come back after it was replaced.
Excellent tutorial. Impressed by complete breakdown of system. This gentleman should teach auto tech and set his own his salary.
I am always looking for the quickest video, but this is awesome and I have learned a lesson in patience:)
Glad it helps. Thanks for your comments
Glad it helped Stephen. Thanks for your comments.
Glad it helped Steven, thanks for you comments.
DUANE, it is always to see you back your knowledge and expertise really helps a lot good videos and info as always.
Agree with other post. By far the most simplest breakdown. Great video
WOW, This was the best video and super easy to watch. I moved quickly with detailed explanation! Thanks
I’m not a pro just semi pro. This guys videos help me keep up with my skills.
Wow, great video. I wish your shop was in my town, you would have my entire family and friends business. Thank you!!
Just found this channel. This is best evap leak video out there IMHO. And I've watched a lot of them. Thanks for this.
Thank you, I try and make things easy to understand
FWIW, I usually check a purge valve by unplugging the vacuum hose and electrical connector then starting the engine. Plug the vacuum port with your thumb and if it's leaking you'll feel it suck on your thumb. Alternatively, you can attach a vacuum gauge to the port in lieu of using your thumb. This way you can detect very minor leaks (you'll never be able to suck on that valve as hard as the engine does) and you don't have to get any carbon deposits in your mouth.
I fix my Chevy Tahoe 1999 thank to yo video and I spend only $45 for the part thank you so much!!!
Thank you you are the best teacher. I would work with/for you all day
your vids are always very good, thanks for your efforts...
Wow! Very impressive explanation. Thank you.
