Re: the preamble - In fairness, Golgo 13 has had multiple different manga chapters dedicated to his origin and discussing what drove him to the life of an assassin - the thing is that they all deliberately disagree and contradict each other, in order to sustain a sense of mystery about the character
I think his origins are probably super mundane and everyone tries so hard to figure out how such a mythical figure came out that they invent wild stories. And or Golgo just casually lies about his origins just to fuck with people for fun.
He could be seen as any psycho version of a badass who rocks an eye-patch, like Snake Plisken or any of his MGS clones. Though considering that the Golgo 13 series has been written as a manga since 1968, I wonder how many one-eyed bad dudes have been killed off by Duke since he was introduced back then.

Being with the series for years the manga has different types of stories; ones centered around Golgo ala an action thriller, focusing on his traits and rules as a pro to get through a story. Ones focusing on other characters, Golgo playing more a side role. Then ones focusing on a seemingly impossible job, waiting in anticipation to see how Golgo does it. That along with such a rich history, distinct style, smart writing (for the most part), action, suspense, globe trotting, quiet moments of beauty, dives into human emotion, drama, the series as a whole is more interesting than any one piece of the series. While I have rankings for what I've read/watched I'm always drawn to the series itself; the world, the writing, and yes the quiet as bricks main character who I love accompanying. His cold quiet nature makes him seem like a "viewer! self insert" character on the surface thats not how he was designed. He's better when you observe him, see his actions, and consider what you think goes through his head or watch in awe of his skills. Golgo is better when you're the observer, not the immserive-fantasy-seeker. Its down to how hes incorporated into these plots, and waiting for those "Golgo moments" like James Bond moments. Or viewing an intriguing character study that hes a small part of, see him in those more human scenerios. The international flair is a big one too, and the series does love its environments. The stories that provide a possible glimpse at his past are also brilliant, adding to what your own interpretation is. While the Professional got me hooked I do think Golgo is a hard series to enjoy casually for some. You'll get good action, memorable writing and such but if you're looking for Lethal Weapon the series won't scratch that itch. If you love subtle character moments, stories that don't pander to your IQ, character dramas, then you may love the series. The '08 anime is probly the best place to start, great modernizations of past manga stories. The Professional is a great film, and my favorite, but its the most graphic and hardcore of the bunch, so not for everyone's stomach. The live actions are good entertainment, just harder to come by. English translations of the manga are few and far between, some of the translations do contain dialogue heavy stories throughout, so maybe the place to go if you like what you've watched. Queen Bee though? I like elements of it but its one of the weakest pieces of the franchise. Not a great OVA, and definitely not representative of the rest of the franchise. I get what they tried to do, could've worked, but they felt the need to stretch it on too long in contrived ways. Not a good representation of Golgo as a character. I'd skip it, only a curiosity if you really like the series.
Both Matz and David Fincher's The Killer is clearly a mumble core rendition of Golgo 13. I mean this as a compliment.... Entirely too many hitmen stories have try to make these characters nice guys

Richard Dawson was one of the most compelling villains from 80s anime. He really couldn't stop being evil even though he know what he was doing was wrong. Fascinating how well written he was.

Imagine him preparing to pull the trigger, but then his hand shakes, he gets damp with a cold sweat, and his pinky begins to loosen on the grip. He can't do it, but can't let her get away because he can't let a mark go unmarked. How it would go from there to make it great, I'm not certain for I'm not good enough, but it could've been greater if he hesitated.

On Max Rockatansky (Mad Max), I disagree. He's plenty interesting as a character. Essentially, he's a character who COULD be a Nietzschean superman in the post apocalyptic wasteland, but chooses not to because he sees no value in it. He just misses his family and wishes he had told his father he loved him and so forth, because that, and not power, self agrandizement and mayhem, are what makes life worth living for him. That's makes him both interesting as a character, and as a philosophical statement by George Miller
What's weird about Urban Vision is that a lot of their dubs were done Jack Fletcher, who directed a lot of notable titles like Final Fantasy X, the Tenchi Muyo OVA's and the Universe TV series, the Sonic the Hedgehog series (2010-present), and most notably the English adaptions of Studio Ghibli films like Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky. I'm guessing the founder of Urban Vision really wanted actors that weren't in the Anime voice pool consider that you get actors like John DiMaggio, Debi Derryberry, and Tara Strong that weren't at most actors that do mostly anime roles with the exception of Debi because she still played Ryo Ohki in the Tenchi Muyo franchise after Jack Fletcher directed the TV series and OVA series.
He also voice directed one of Sage's most hated shows; Aeon Flux. Fitting since Aeon's voice actress plays Queen Bee. Another odd casting choice here is Dwight Schultz as Senator Hardy one of only two times he ever worked on an anime
A sad theme throughout the anime series is that every time he is in a relationship with a woman they end up dead. Either by his hands, suicide or someone else kills them and if he has any kids they are either dead or he leaves them to the system because he doesn't want the to interfere with his life or he knows that this is not the kind of life he wants for his children making his only decision as a father to stay out of their lives for the better of their lives what ever they may be.
I would like to say this though if they ever come out with a new season or OVA/movie and he is confronted by a child that is clearly his and that child is just as good as him as an assassin then I would find it tragic to the very end if he had to kill his own kid just to keep the contract fulfilled. Someone tell me if this has already been done.
I think I know why people talk about wanting to be Golgo. He doesn't have a past, he has no pain to feel. In a way that's bliss. I recently read Goldfinger and James Bond has more past in the book than Golgo.

Punisher origins stories as "Born", S02 of Daredevil or the 2nd to last Max arc that lead to his death are some of the best ones he ever had. Frank is all sorts of things, but not necessarily an avatar Ben. Max was also my favorite character in Fury Road... but only there.
while gogo doesn't have a history the tv series shows does kind of show his personality by the rought he goes with his kill as if it is just a job he does not screw around but if he if some one broke the contract or does not like the person he has to hit he will leave as massacre and slowly make his way to them so they are basically pissing themselves knowing no matter how many people they have under there command it is useless but there are times in the anime it shows a few people he would rather of not have to to kill them but unlike most assassins who are made killers with hearts of gold gogo will stay faithful to his job even there are people he shown to respect that sadly do to how professional he is he cant let them live this is what i think is what makes gogo interesting to see how he feels about his target and the lengths he goes and the tactics he is forced to used to make sure he can achieve his job
It is difficult to explain if you don't know who the Hardy Boyz are. Most of the wrestling jokes are based on that since one of the characters in Golgo 13: Queen Bee last names is Hardy.

Urban vision released a kids show called 'strange dawn' so it wasn't all just hyper violence. Though only ever found the first volume, so no telling if it gets more violent later. And random trivia, it is a british dub.

Queen Bee for me was good, but The Professional: GOLGO 13 was better for the setup and all, since when I watched it when I was younger (and wasn't supposed to :p ) it did take me by surprise for why what happened, happened. All in all, great catch for John DiMaggio for voicing GOLGO 13, but he also voiced his informant as well. Hopefully whenever it's possible to be in range for doing your reviews, definitely check out the TV series of GOLGO 13 where you're right about how in smaller increments/shorter format, it is a bit more accessible for the stories that seem to stem from the manga more than being just an original story.

There was one guy in the anime scene in the UK in the 90s who really wanted to import and sell anime laden with sex and violence, similar to Urban Vision, but he didn't get as far as even 20 releases. His first company got one before it fell apart, and his second got 8Man After, Kekko Kamen, and the live action Wicked City onto store shelves before it also collapsed.
A small thing of note, it's not every day someone references Raijin-Oh. It & The King of Braves GaoGaiGar share the same unfortunate fate of never getting full English dubs.

The TV series is god, it actually does give Golgo character, he hasn't just have a work ethic but he has a code and lines, it's very subtle.

Punisher origins stories as "Born", S02 of Daredevil or the 2nd to last Max arc that lead to his death are some of the best ones he ever had. Frank is all sorts of things, but not necessarily an avatar Ben.

while gogo doesn't have a history the tv series shows does kind of show his personality by the rought he goes with his kill as if it is just a job he does not screw around but if he if some one broke the contract or does not like the person he has to hit he will leave as massacre and slowly make his way to them so they are basically pissing themselves knowing no matter how many people they have under there command it is useless but there are times in the anime it shows a few people he would rather of not have to to kill them but unlike most assassins who are made killers with hearts of gold gogo will stay faithful to his job even there are people he shown to respect that sadly do to how professional he is he cant let them live this is what i think is what makes gogo interesting to see how he feels about his target and the lengths he goes and the tactics he is forced to used to make sure he can achieve his job

It is difficult to explain if you don't know who the Hardy Boyz are. Most of the wrestling jokes are based on that since one of the characters in Golgo 13: Queen Bee last names is Hardy.
Oh God damn it, me and my lack of knowledge regarding pro wrestling, I should watch more of it, I mean hot beefy muscular men covered in oil on top of each other sounds right up my alley.

Urban vision released a kids show called 'strange dawn' so it wasn't all just hyper violence. Though only ever found the first volume, so no telling if it gets more violent later. And random trivia, it is a british dub.

Queen Bee for me was good, but The Professional: GOLGO 13 was better for the setup and all, since when I watched it when I was younger (and wasn't supposed to :p ) it did take me by surprise for why what happened, happened.
All in all, great catch for John DiMaggio for voicing GOLGO 13, but he also voiced his informant as well. Hopefully whenever it's possible to be in range for doing your reviews, definitely check out the TV series of GOLGO 13 where you're right about how in smaller increments/shorter format, it is a bit more accessible for the stories that seem to stem from the manga more than being just an original story.

There was one guy in the anime scene in the UK in the 90s who really wanted to import and sell anime laden with sex and violence, similar to Urban Vision, but he didn't get as far as even 20 releases. His first company got one before it fell apart, and his second got 8Man After, Kekko Kamen, and the live action Wicked City onto store shelves before it also collapsed.
