Until then, well, his spoiled behavior is a lot more bearable when the older characters practically roast him for it.
The thing about the petulant whiny hero is that they have to have at least some redeeming qualities to start with for us to even care about their character arc.

Herman aught to have been the protagonist, with her own coming of age story. SuperTwit is then made an unreliable ally who is strong, but reckless and his past comes with a lot of baggage that ensures more of the evil king's professional killers trying to hunt them down.
I just realized. Good coming of age story. Kamen rider gaim. Main character isn't annoying. Is honestly a good person but is forced to learn some harsh realities of life and has to grow to not fear or despair from them but face them head on. Granted gaim isn't also an anime but eh.

Or the character is Frank fucking Castle it's like these idiots are only aware of two kinds of protagonists! Their point is always "Oh I'd rather have a fun happy smiling character who can still show other emotions (Really only anger but what else is there really?) than a big gruff asshole who's always brooding." To those people, moderation is a thing. You can have a teenager coming into his own or a down on his luck adult or what-have-you, and they can still be a fucking person! We can have happy go lucky characters who can do more than smile like an idiot who farted in a crowded room (and if he isn't doing that than he's so filled with pride or anger that he just goes on a rampage- lookin at you Goku). And we can also have characters who aren't Marcus Fenix. I REALLY just don't get how anyone prefers either of these two extremes...
