    I found this out when playing a randomizer. If you evolve the starter Professor Rowan gives you before you first go to his lab, he will have an extra line of text when he looks at the starter saying “Wow, you’ve evolved it already?”

      that's also a nice nod to the og jpn green ver. in which if you evolved the starter before receiving the dex the game would soft lock you of progressing,because it thinks you've cheated and got yourself a mon not obtainable at that point in the game(smth like this,but basically it doesn't let you have the dex)

    The Fire Fang thing is actually understood. It has something to do with the number of the move in the code being badly programmed, but I forget exactly how.

      Every two turn move has an exception made in the code to not block the first turn, and somehow Fire Fang ended up on that list, but Fire Fang doesn't have a first turn

    • @ProfessorRex
      @ProfessorRex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +328

      I believe it is because fire fang ended up getting identified in the code as being the first turn of Shadow Force. Two turn moves aren’t supposed to be able to fail so turn 1 of shadow force is supposed to always work. However, somehow in the code the ID that is tied to this first turn of Shadow Force got assigned to Fire Fang

      @@ProfessorRex The values for the two moves are right next to one another, so it's likely someone scrolled down one line too far and set the wrong move to pass. And because Fire Fang isn't a two-turn move, the game just lets the "first turn" play out, hence why the attack can land.

    The guitar sound effect used in Electivire’s cry is also pretty heavily used in the Gen V games, a good example is the PWT Final Battle theme. I’ve heard the guitar sound so many times by sifting through the MIDIs from those games that I was rather surprised to hear it in their cry and thought that it was kind of cool. Here's a neat little detail I noticed as a kid. In the Gen 3 games when you can occasionally hear Pokémon cries in the overworld, if a Roaming Pokémon happens to be in that route, you can rarely hear that Pokémon's cry. I wonder if that tiny detail was supposed to help players find out if the Roaming Pokémon was there before gaining the ability to track it with the Pokedex.

    I still have a Wondertomb in my Diamond version I hacked in specifically for the battle tower. The AI for the later levels of it are ridiculously adaptive to your strategies. I'd always start with the "invincible" Spiritomb, which worked for maybe five battles before the AI would bring in Toxic stallers and Leech Seeders (both of which would work on a Wondertomb!). Even giving it a Lum Berry was useless in the long run. Anyone wanting a true challenge should try the gen 4 battle tower.

    • @Tvboy777
      @Tvboy777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Why not just cheese it with Lum Berry and Substitute, Rest, Toxic, and Will-o-wisp? Seems like you could beat the entire thing with that move set.

    • @rickytheweirdo

      A way to counter it could be teaching Spiritomb taunt while holding a lum berry. First turn use taunt and if the pokemon is faster than you and it uses a status move (like thunder wave) the lum berry will heal you and when you use taunt it cant do it anymore.

    I actually have an experience with another version of the transform glitch. It was in the PAL version of Hearthgold/Soulsilver, me and my cousin were both playing and a wild Ditto he caught never transformed back into a Ditto. It kept the appearance and moveset of Croconaw.
    Since we were like...10, we never really experimented with it in the end so I still wonder if it would have always acted as a Croconaw and eventually evolved into Feraligatr or not.
    Some online search implies it might have to do with a bug with the Rage move, which makes sense since Totodile learns it and he quite certainly had it at the moment of the bug.

      The rage transform glitch is possible in every region of every gen 4 game. What’s interesting is that gen 4 is the last generation where metronome can be used to use transformation so if you encountered a wild ditto and had it transform into a Smeargle that knew three other moves with rage, used metronome on another pokemon to transform and rage against that ditto, you could legitimately teach any pokemon that had access to metronome any move in gen 4.

    Bulbapedia actually explains the mechanics of the Fire Fang Wonder Guard glitch, so it isn't a complete unknown:
    "This happens due to a typo within the switch statement for a function for Wonder Guard in relation to moves with a charging turn and Bide. The function is intended to compare move effect codes to a list in the function to prevent specific moves' charging turn(s) from being affected by Wonder Guard. Shadow Force, which its move effect code is 272, is intended to be a part of the switch statement, but Fire Fang, which is 273, is instead in the statement. Since Fire Fang doesn't have a charging turn, this allows it to always bypass Wonder Guard."

    If we're talking small design details (My personal favourite ones),
    Crustle's rock isn't just sitting on top of it like Dwebble, there are holes in the side of it carved out where Crustle's legs come out from
    Even though Clauncer and Clawitzer are designed as lobsters, they are actually both based off of shrimp
    Palossand can freely move the sandcastles on either side of it like hands
    Something which a lot of people probably know (I don't because never cared enough to use it) is that Crabominable's arms are actually crab claws, and only the large part of the paw design on its hands open like crab arms
    The inside of Golisopod's limbs are coloured purple like its mouth and its excess smaller arms can fold in underneath its head at will
    The anchor Dhelmise carries actually has a seaweed pattern on it that's supposed to look like jagged teeth. Combined with its eye and the shape of its anchor Dhelmise's entire body is actually just a huge evil grin. Also the chain for its anchor doesn't manifest out of nowhere. It's bundled around its centrepiece nose-thingy as a clump of seaweed and unravels into a chain. You can see that whenever it lowers the anchor in an attack move the wheel centrepiece becomes completely smooth instead of the thick seaweed clump it looks like when idle. It's also #360 in the Galar dex because it's a wheel and 360 degrees in a wheel. That last one isn't actually a fact it's just neat I guess. Man.
    ...
    Wait a minute I can't end this comment yet I've still got more useless Dhelmise facts! I've just got to quickfire them now damn...
    The broken eye may be a nod at a pirate's eyepatch
    drooping seaweed below the wheel may resemble a pirate's beard
    The ghost and grass type is because Dhelmise's body is actually the seaweed around the steering wheel that possessed the ship parts
    Dhelmise is apparently 12ft tall. Since the wheel is the same size as the anchor it's safe to say they're both about 6ft tall. Not all that sure what kind of goated captain sails with a 6ft steering wheel but props to them I guess.
    Dhelmise, despite being genderless, could learn attract in gen 7. This was then removed from its learnset in gen 8. Yeah that's right everyone always calls Cryogonal the only lonely depressed pokemon yet here we have Dhelmise out here with nobody to love
    How exactly did Dhelmise get a whole bunch of ship parts? Probably a shipwreck I guess. Well good thing there may be an actual explanation to it hidden in another pokemon's pokedex entry that isn't even from the same generation. A Dhelmise entry states that it protects Skrelp until they're ready to evolve. Clearly there's some sort of mutual bond there because Dragalge, the evolution's dex entry states that ships often go missing in waters its made its habitat in meaning Dhelmise protects Skrelp until they evolve then Dragalge casually sinks an entire ship so Dhelmise can yoink a steering wheel and an anchor. Dhelmise and Dragalge, the first bromance pokemon. So much so that a line in Pokemon Masters states that Acerola is annoyed with her Dhelmise because it keeps making friends with Skrelp and bringing them to her house.
    Maybe someday the world will know Dhelmise is a chad. Maybe someday.

    An idea for a future video would be to talk about how broken the ability Sheer Force is. On paper it just removes the secondary effects of your moves, but it removes a lot of effects that you wouldn't expect. Most people know that Sheer Force will remove the damage taken from a life orb. I actually like the potion being less effective than just fresh water thing, even without the whole mt silver lore stuff. Like fresh water would be way harder to market and brand and upsell, so companies kept adding extra vitamins and minerals and electrolytes to what is essentially an energy drink in the pokemon universe, to the point where it dilutes the original effectiveness. And everyone in the pokemon universe is kinda like those people that buy "diet Pepsi" to be health, even though it's still not actually healthy at all.

    • @RyanNerdyGamer
      @RyanNerdyGamer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      I tend to associate it with a “naturally sourced is better than artificially synthesised” theme, something that the Pokémon franchise touches upon in many other ways. Screw with nature, nature screws with you.
      Ruby and Sapphire are a prime example of this trope, as the theme of the storyline, and of the Hoenn Region as a whole, is Nature (which complements XY’s theme of Beauty IMO, and of course Zygarde as the embodiment of the Natural Order, leading to a truly cohesive meta-theme of “Natural Beauty” in Gen VI, but I digress).
      Bottom line: If you were thirsty after wandering through the desert with nothing but an icky Water-type Pokémon for hydration, and met someone who offered you either clean and pure water or a brightly glowing energy drink, which would your body instinctively reach out for and grab?

      Well, the thing about Potions is that they're not food, they're topical medications.
      While it doesn't really make too much sense for your pokemon to take a break to have a snack in the middle of the fight, consider what would make, say, a kid playing basketball who just fell and scraped their knee feel better - a Band-Aid or a water break?
      Obviously both are good, but I guarantee the kid who gets to sit down and drink something is going to _feel_ better than the kid who gets a Band-Aid and is sent straight back out.

    • @hokostudios
      @hokostudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The Official Pokémon Advanced Handbook #4, written by Maria S. Barbo and published by Scholastic. Oddly, Swellow's type is correctly listed as Normal/Flying. Tailow's is hardly the only error in the book.
      Pelipper is listed as Nomal/Flying. Salamence is listed as Dragon. Nincada is listed as _Psychic._
      Sharpedo's Rough Skin is described like an attack that deals residual damage.
      Wurmple's evolution is claimed to be dependent on the time of day.
      The guide also says the following for keeping Pokémon who evolve via friendship happy: "Happy Pokémon spend a lot of time with their trainers, eat yummy healthy foods, and get daily workouts in Pokémon battles. And don't forget those regular check-ups at the Pokémon Center!" Mostly sound but Maria may not know that this world's "healthy food" is bitter. :P
      The grass-cutting functionality of Cut is described, but mistakenly as a way to find wild Pokémon.
      There might be some other errors present, but I'm not willing to go digging through all the listed classifications and movesets to find them lol. There are a few pretty prominent errors with the graphics prepped for parts of the book, though.

  • @carsonshane4678
    @carsonshane4678 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    6:10 We actually know the reason fire fang hits through wonder guard. Here’s a very messy explanation. It’s because each attack has a value set to it to play an animation and see what the damage done by the move should be and fire fang was coded incorrectly giving it a value 1 more than it should, this value just so happened to correspond to the first turn of a 2 hit move. Because 2 hit moves only calculate damage on the second turn the first “charge turn” isn’t blocked by wonder guard. Since fire fang attacks the same turn it will always hit through wonder guard.

    The fact that the Battle Tower can learn to bring Fire Fang to beat Wondertomb makes me think that this wasn't a bug so much as it was an intentional feature to get around cheating. Think about it; A move that already is super effective against its intended target, with a little flag that says it bypasses Wonder Guard, just to help stop cheating.

    • @ProfVibes
      @ProfVibes ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, its a coding error! Two turn moves, such as Solar Beam or Phantom Force, always move on their first turn, even if wonder guard is active. The second turn though, they'll fail. Fire Fang was accidently given the ID for Phantom Force, so the first turn (which is just attacking for Fire Fang) goes through wonder guard!

    • @Lucifronz

      Yeah, no, even without the explanation (which makes sense), I think you greatly overestimate how hard they went in on cheating.

    I wonder if Wonderguard doesn't just check for a type, but if each MOVE checks for wonderguard, and that fire fang is missing that particular flag. In normal gameplay it wouldn't matter because you'd expect Fire Fang to work on Shedinja anyway. No idea if it hits other wonderguard hax mons or not though.

    • @corebear1941
      @corebear1941 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Supposedly that's kinda accurate. But instead of blacklisting every move individually, the error is apparently because every move fails except certain moves (e.g. part one of Solar Beam (just charging the beam)) and Fire Fang was accidentally whitelisted and allowed to hit. This means it would hit any other pokemon using wonder guard, even if it was like- a Blastoise, it would be not very effective but still hit.

    Here is a fun fact, not sure if it's obscure: The Pixie Plate is the only Plate obtainable in Sword and Shield. It was added because the Fairy type doesn't have any other type enhancement item. On the other hand, the Pixie Plate is the only plate not obtainable in BDSP's overworld, it can only be obtained in the underground. This is because BDSP's map is a 1:1 scale of Diamond and Pearl's

    I really liked how much better the vending machine items were than potions. They were cheaper so you tended to get more bang for your buck (granted, to a certain point). The only trade off was instead of more money you had to spend more time buying them.
    But then they nerfed them. Now the water only heals 30 and the lemonade only heals 70 instead of 80.

    @BlueBoyPhin you should do a video on what in game items are made of. Your knowledge of mount silver and the fresh water helped me find out what super potion and hyper potion are made of. Super potion is silver hydrosol and hyper potion is silver hydrosol with artichoke extract. I also know that revive is basically just a naturally occurring salt crystal that can be mined in game and is made of smelling salts. I think the reason it can only be used once is because you have to break it to use it

    I recently learned about how hard it can be to catch a Herracross in Gen 2. The game uses your Trainer ID to overlay a special map over the region and only where certain icons overlap with headbutt trees do you get a "mountain tree". I only found this out because I spent 2 hours in azela town in crystal only to find no herracross because I had no mountain trees.

    Less a fun fact and more an oddity:
    Gen 2, Gold and Silver, has Crystal as the third game. The two metal games having the mineral.
    Gen 4, Diamond and Pearl, has Platinum as the third game. The two mineral games having the metal.
    Not really mind blowing but odd to think about.

    There is one particular anecdote from my childhood I would love to have someone look into. I was playing Pokemon Pearl shortly after release and was at the point in the game of having to beat the Veilstone City gym. The lucario was kicking my ass so I decided to go to the route south and grind for a while. One of the encounters was a plain looking girafarig, like many I had beaten before, except this one ran away. Which... shouldn't be possible as far as I know. After the encounter I did a couple more fights and it was time to heal up once again and when I got to the pokemon center I was told my pokemon had pokerus.
    This whole thing has baffled me pretty much all my life. There is a chance I'm missremembering and I was the one who chose to ran away, but it's unlikely, since it was taking me 2-3 hits to beat the girafarigs. Still I think it is worth looking into, if only because pokerus isn't as well understood as it should for the common player (like I had read at the time that you had to catch the pokemon, but I didn't, I beat it, and still my pokemon got infected)

    • @oodogla
      @oodogla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You do have to catch the Pokemon to get pokerus though. A Pokemon gets pokerus by being infected by an adjacent party member that has it, so if you didn't catch a mon that had pokerus you can't get it.

    • @venabre
      @venabre 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@oodogla I have gotten pokerus twice. Once in pearl, once in a gen 7 game but I can't say whether it was Moon or Ultra Moon. In neither scenario I caught the pokemon, and instead the pokemon in my party got infected with it after beating a wild pokemon.

    once I used walk through walls cheat on X/Y to avoid talking to mum at the start of the game, your neighbour and Shauna will stand right there like after you beat Pokémon League.
    But here's the story:
    Shauna will ask you to trade Pokémon like after you beat League for the first time, even you are just woke up and has no Pokémon yet (after using walk through wall cheat to avoid mum), so I think probably the code already design that scene to appears since the start of the game somehow.

    The reason fire fang can hit the wonder guard is due to the number that the move is associated with or something along those lines.
    It shares the same ID as a move that can bypass WonderGuard or something like that. Heard it a few months back so might be thinking of something else

    Fun fact! Spiritomb is technically weak to fighting types moves! I always thought nothing was super affectionate in the older games but while replaying gen 4 I caught a Kangaskahn with the ability scrappy. Any Pokémon with that ability can hit ghost type Pokémon, meaning you can bypass the ghost part of spiritomb and force it to take fighting type damage cause súper-effective damage :3
