  • Dave Darcy shooter producer of Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV and Editor at Large for Australian Adventure Bike Magazine (AAB) and Andrew Clubb, Editor of AAB, are planning a 4,000 km loop through Australia's outback to test the bike's Super Tourer credentials. The Triumph Tiger 1200 has recently arrived on Australia’s shores. On paper it’s a highly dirt capable, well specced, comfortable Super Tourer. Clubby and I will be taking two top of the range Tiger Rally Explorer 1200s for a 4000 kilometre tour from Melbourne into South Australia’s Flinders Ranges onto Cameron Corner and through outback New South Wales back to Sydney. We aim to knock this over in a week, so it’s likely there’ll be some long days in the saddle getting to know these machines. I picked this route because if I owned this bike this is the type of adventure I’d want to be doing on it. Big miles in the outback, taking advantage of that 30 litre tank. The Tiger had an unusual introduction to Australia. Two time Isle of Man TT champion and off road rider, Cameron Donald rode the Tiger 1200 in Australia’s oldest motorcycle reliability race, the Hardi 24 hour Trial that has been running since 1927. Cam brought along his childhood friend and ‘brother from another mother’ Donald Owen who also rode a 1200 Tiger. The 24 hour trial course comprises of four six-hours laps with each lap consisting of 12 competitive sections, which are timed (the rider with the lowest cumulative time wins) and 13 transit legs. Three evenly spread fuel stops allow 15 minutes for basic motorcycle maintenance and rider sustenance. Outside assistance is not permitted. The race is usually ridden on light weight enduro bikes so the 1200s certainly made themselves known. This years race was unusually technical and difficult, hardly a place for 1200s. Now before Clubby and I go bring you into planning for this ride Triumph Australia have kindly given us access to a beautifully shot movie that records Cam and Donald’s preparation and competition in the Hardi 24 Hours Trial. After the short movie we catch up with Clubby to plan the route.
For those new to MAD TV I'd encourage you to look around the channel, we have international adventures, bike reviews and Chris Birch extreme videos and other stuff and most recently some great films from Nick Sanders. I've got myself one of the GT Pro Tiger 1200's and I absolutely love it. Just got back from a tour of Croatia and Italy (about 4500km) and it was such a great bike. Loved the video and hope you have a good trip, can't wait to see it.

Awesome Dave. I grew up in the Barossa and spent nights out watching the 24hr as a kid. Everyone one looked forward to it. Clubby is on the money, stop in at Keith on the way up to Hawker and the Flinders.. gods country and will be amazing on the big Triumphs.. Nik

Excited to see how you get on with the 1200 Tigers, I rode my 900 rallyPro from Odense (Denmark) to Rushden (UK) last Friday 830+ miles in 19 hours.
Was thinking of test riding the 1200cc GT (with short legs the Rally will be too tall), however on Saturday on the 900, I was faffing around trying to get a parking spot in a side road with very steep cambers, turned around, going up on the curb, a bit too slow went to dab down and the legs were not long enough so I ended up dropping the bike. This is when you find out, having that weight of bike when you are an unfit nearly 60 year old short rider, probably not the best idea.
I am considering trading in for a cruiser and then getting a light weight dual sport 😂
I truly envy you guys with the skill set to manage these fantastic machines.
Keep up the good work guys

Ridden this a few times on a sidecar had a huge crash in 1998 when the leading link snapped of at the tree on a dirt road section, while doing 100 clicks 21 hrs into the event.

This will be another ripper of a ride. I really wanted a Tiger Rally in the 900cc version but there wasn’t a dealer close to me. Ended up going with the Pan America but I still admire those Tigers!

Back in the 80s only "trials universal" tyres were allowed in the 24hr. Knobbies feemed too easy! Still freezing winter with mote dark than light riding.

Sidecar must be rough, especially being the one in the side car... geeez... the only time we saw them in this clip was those two ladies pushing one... my god...! My must be beaten up to hell, bruises and I dunno, cracked everything from that... geez! I'd love to see that and how it gets through it!
The Triumphs are big comfy recliner seats in comparison probably! xD

got no idea what the point of these triumph adventure bikes oif they are not designed to go offroad. the whole motorbike design of today leaves me mystified. because there are such a lot of great old bikes for a fraction of the price.
