Teen with Rare Condition Shows Potential in Animation

  • Bee Perrone lives with the invisible disability Ivemark Syndrome; a rare condition where internal organs are malformed or unusually placed, and the spleen is either absent or multiplied - Bee has seven. It is so rare that not much is known about Ivemark, and understanding it is a continuous journey for the whole Perrone family. Due to the complex nature of the symptoms, Bee is no longer in school, and is supported fulltime by mum Elizabeth. Showing early talent as an anime artist, Bee has attracted the attention of a mentor at Weta Workshop. / attitudepictures

    Trust me, I have several chronic illnesses and people look at me strange when I have to rush to the disabled toilet due to my chronic illnesses. Sometimes I wonder if I need to have the disabled wheelchair sign tattooed to my forehead! before people will understand that not all disabilities are external. What a lovely family.

      So true, I look healthy but have stage 4 cancer. My adult daughter has Crohn's disease and several other chronis illnesses. I honestly understand because before I had my walker people would never really know I have multiple disabilities and this one time in gym class we had one of those fitness test. And I can't run for a long time nor stretch my limbs (I have a rare form of arthritis and and two lung diseases and some other things) so told my gym teacher but she thought I was lying so she literally forced me to stretch my legs while I was tearing up from the pain (I can't scream). My classmates finally told her to stop and she did. Later I had to go to the nurse for my 504 plan and showed her. She went oh well you're failing this class. After multiple years of dealing with similar issues (one of which that got me kept back. I put myself in an online school. And if you're wondering where my parents were let's just say my parents are literally the absolute opposite of hers.

    How Bee's mum talks about Bee's life, disabilities, hobbies, gender, sexuality etc with so much compassion and understanding makes my heart so happy. Yes it's how every parent should feel about their children but unfortunately it's not always. She seems like a beautiful woman and mother and Bee seems like a wonderful person too. Our disabilities while limit us they don't have to define us. Also I hope Elizabeth doesn't feel too guilty about forcing Bee into school. As she said we do the best with the information available to us at the time and it's not as if doctors or the education system provide any alternatives and solutions to people who do fit the mold. 💖

      Might also depend on the day, situation and mood. This kind of stuff sometimes works like that, I for example would call myself very eloquent but on worse pain and/or mental health days I just can't speak. @its_mi. 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But complaining can be fun, too! And really stress relieving. It just shouldn't take over your life. The way we handle it as flatmates is that whenever someone starts complaining the other asks "are you looking for solutions or just to release some pressure?" Whenever it's the latter we go on a short rant together and usually feel better 5 minutes later :)

    As a disabled queer person, I REALLY appreciate this mother even more, being so accepting of her children and being active in the LGBTQ community and being a disability advocate. We need so many more people like her! Far too often, our only spokespeople are people within the communities, and that's great to have them, but we need more Allies to step up and show their support, and be that bridge for people outside the communities to understand more and open their minds.

    I have 3 permanent disabilities. There are days I need a cane and days I need a wheelchair. But with therapy for years those days are less. But I can't walk far or for long. I also have chrohns. So days I'm walking ok noone can see my disabilities. I get dirty looks when I park using my disability placard. I get dirty looks if I've been walking for too long and need to use the store cart. It's like only for older ppl, ppl with visible walking implements or obese ppl. I get dirty looks using the disabled restroom when my chrohns is flaring up. I've got a tattoo that says not all disabilities are visible I got so tired of it. This girl is so young and so strong and courageous. Her mom is amazing. The sister and dad too. They accept her for who she is and that's amazing. She doesn't have to worry about extra stress from that. I hope she makes it with her art and her mom with her book. Great episode.

      most days i just feel really sad that people judge me becuz i dont look sick. i shouldnt have to prove i am sick.

    I have an invisible disability too and I absolutely do understand how Bee feels. I've been yelled at for using stuff like the disabled seat in public transport and not standing up when someone else who is elderly or disabled enters. I'm young and seem ok but I really am not.
    I don't live at home anymore and can be almost 100% independent, I can't carry heavy stuff so I always need to have some carry that up the stairs to my apartment for me but that's almost it.
    I also am alternative and queer, I'm nonbinary and not heterosexuell either. Bees parents seem to be very supportive and I'm glad they have this kind of bond.

    Honestly this is a beautiful faith! To be optimistic and face/manage obstacles without hurting oneself. Especially with understanding and fully supporting family members whose love looks a little differently than we experienced.

    Bee seems like a very interesting and unique person; I think they’d be a great person to get to know over time. I admire their ability to vocalize their identity so well. I have the same problem with pronouns with my own child who is not a standard cis-gendered person. It’s not grammatically correct, but we can certainly change our thinking to accommodate everyone. It isn’t a big thing to ask of ourselves.
    I was so sad to hear they are so defeated about continuing with their education and finding employment, though. Every single person deserves an education, and we know that everyone has the capacity to learn. I think the school system did not know how to teach people with various intellectual disabilities, and as a result Bee feels like they failed, when in fact the school system failed Bee. Same for finding meaningful employment. Bee has plenty of skills, and they could be put to use helping others in a sheltered and monitored environment. Everyone has value, and everyone deserves a chance to grow and contribute to the world.

      Using they/them pronouns singularly is actually grammatically correct! We use them all the time without realizing it. For example, the way Facebook will give you a notification on a friend's birthday, "it's (blanks) birthday today! Wish them a happy birthday"

    • @rassvet7
      @rassvet7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, they referred as singular is used since a long time!!

    • @pinkmonkeybird2644
      @pinkmonkeybird2644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@noahb8730 Oh I know the usage has changed over time, since language is constantly evolving as we do. I am an older person who was taught very strict grammar rules in school, so it still feels odd to me. I think a lot of older people feel the same way, and it isn’t meant as disrespect. It’s just an old habit, but I’m working on it.

      I mostly agree with you, but I’m not sure if they actually have an intellectual disability. Sure, cognitive disability, because their language and memory are impaired so it absolutely affects them cognitively. But to actually have an ID you have to score less than 70 on your IQ. But I know that ID:s are pretty stigmatized, so Bee may not mention that part, but I think Bee seems quite intelligent. But don’t trust my autistic brain on reading people...

      What is taught it primary school is the simplest case; it is not intended to apply to every grammatical situation. Linguistics is descriptive, not descriptive.

    bee comes off as such a unique & creative old soul, and her mother seems like she not only supports her, but also helps feed into every interest she has. i mean seriously...i'd bet a million bucks that 99% of mothers would either A-think because of her age, she doesn't know yet what she wants to do with her life and that her interests and style she has will probably change so they just don't even try to get involved with anything and kinda step-back and go with the flow. or B-possibly even question her hobbies & dreams & even be a little embarrassed of those things because of the way other teenagers/peers and even society in general kinda categorizes & judges others who are like bee when it comes to the things she likes and what she wears or how she wants to be referred to as they/them. (which i only just now realized i've been using "she" the whole time i'm writing this until now, sorry.) she takes bee shopping, helps them create some of the styles, helps with their artwork, and even gets involved with the disabled community and the gay community. i think all parents could learn a thing or two from her. if every mother raised their kids like this and helped water their interests & growth from a young age, the world would be such a more unique and beautiful thing. kudos!🤗💫👏🏼
