Ann's greatest vocal expression would hve to be "Crazy On You". Her softness is balanced with some of her more stronger rough vocals. Such an amazing vocal job on that one.

I’m reading their autobiography and Ann suffered with stuttering as a child and extreme bullying. She found she did not stutter while singing and began singing all the time. She’s simply amazing.
I listened to it on audiobook. You watch this and have a whole other perspective on where they were in their lives. Amazing talent. They are still huge here in BC 🇨🇦

This song is just plain badass. I remember when it came out - my older brother bought the 45. The guitar just sounds like it's on a hunt. No other band/song sounded like this record. Ann's voice was very sharp (not in pitch, but in attack, like the point of a sword) in these early songs. She sounds like she's in control and watch out ! lol.

Yes this Barracuda live recording is an absolute classic, simply the best of Rock n Roll, totally badass. I was born in 73 so this was a bit early for me, wish I had been older to really experience the late 70s rock scene, the best times.
I remember when VH1 did their "Divas" series, and I laughed my ass off when they snubbed her. How do you not include Ann Wilson in the pantheon of all-time great female singers?!
@@twelveeighteenofficial7487 For sure. She should be on every list of great rock vocalists not just female ones. These are too recent and I don't like to rank. But I love Paulina from The Warning. Saiki from Band-Maid and Yukina from Hanabie. There is so much great female rock in Japan right now. I could pick a bunch more. Hanabie is fun because the guitarists sing too and they do 4 different styles of vocals in most songs. But if you love vocals you have to hear 'The Hu'. They do Mongolian throat singing and it's awesome. Their cover of 'Sad but True' by Metallica is great. But, you know, they're not girls.
Yeah, she and Nancy are both far too underrated for how talented they are.
Young Ann is the literal embodiment of "She just opens her mouth and the sound comes out." Just belting in the 5th octave over and over like it's absolutely nothing. And the harmonies with Nancy are perfect. I actually grew up with a friend whose cousin is Denny Carmassi (drummer for Montrose, Sammy Haggar and later for Heart) and he says the Wilson sisters were the most talented musicians he ever worked with and it wasn't particularly close.

One of Ann's voice teachers (the late David Kyle) was a friend of a friend - he said the same thing. The Wilsons were the most talented musicians he ever worked with. He helped Ann control and preserve her talent... I guess it's not a coincidence her voice is still amazing after years of rock performance..., but the Wilsons started off with huge levels of natural ability compared to normal mortals.
Hey girl along with 90% of singers in Rock are not true singers by any stretch of the imagination just like the musicians in the bands also.
Rock royalty. In my opinion, one of the finest voices in rock history.
Ann Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Alannah Myles, Joan Jet and Pat Benetar...the incredible rock women of the 70s & 80s. There are others, but the voice on these women and the power out of their voices were incredible. Love them all!!

Ann is a Lyric Soprano, she has one of most steller female rock voice's of all time!
Her sister Nancy is also a gifted musician, singer, songwriter, producer, and film composer. She rose to fame alongside her older sister Ann as a guitarist and backing vocalist in the rock band Heart.
Unfortunately, this is not a long song but "Barracuda" is an absolute Masterpiece of a song!

One of the best rock songs ever. Never gets old. Ann is a legendary vocalist. Even now in her 70s she still can belt it live like there's no tomorrow. Legend.
I saw them about 15 years ago and was blown away. She's a monster vocalist. Amazing! Oh... and Nancy is an exceptional guitarist. My understanding is that she was rated as one of the most respected acoustic players in the world back in the 70s.

So I was the lead vocalist in a Heart tribute band back in the day (early 80's). Heart was my inspiration more specifically Ann Wilson. She has always been a powerhouse vocalist. I think it is reprehensible what the music industry did to her, focusing on her weight instead of her incredible talent. She will always be the greatest female rock vocalist of all time in my mind! If you want to react/review an awesome heart song from the Little Queen album, try Dream of the Archer! It is everything that makes them great and I think you will love it!

Heart was the only group endorsed by Jimmy Page to do covers of their work. He went backstage to give that endorsement, because they had done it so well live.
I have read that Robert Plant told them that Heart's rendition of "Stairway" was the only one he truly enjoyed.

Ann Wilson is a world-class, generational vocalist. I grew up on this music, and it still rocks me every time!
Absolutely agree. In the world of post 50s Rock, Ann is among elite company like Janis Joplin and Gracie Slick. I love Christine McVie, but her world is much softer rock. Keep an eye on Beth Hart, though.
Ann’s vocals seem to be effortless and just flow out. Just incredible. Nancy is so underrated with her vocals. Just imagine what level you have to be at just to harmonize with Ann’s voice.

Nancy actually does lead vocals on a few songs but I bet you can not name them. Their voices are that similar. Nancy is just not a belter like Ann can pump out.
Barracuda is one of those songs to get into this style of rock. When discovered that this song was included in Guitar Hero III, we spent whole evening playing it on repeat. After host got annoyed by continuous play of one song, we locked him in his balcony. Good times.
I hear you on that one! We irritated the bejayjays out the neighbours with Carry On my Wayward Son from GH2. That and No-One Knows. With the noise coming from the room they musty have thought there was cats fighting in the flat above. We were AWFUL lol. And that was pre-Trogdor!
Same here. I discovered them with this song on GHIII, that game got me into classic rock real good, I got obsessed with Alice Cooper thanks to School’s Out being on Guitar Hero.
Ann Wilson is one of the greatest female singers to ever live, definitely in the top few female rock and roll singers. And still kills it now that she is in her 70’s, amazing.
There are a lot of ladies who can belt it out at 28, but mounting the stage at 70 and leaving it all out there is damned special. After she reached her forties its no secret she struggled with her weight, but it never slowed her down that I've ever seen. The girls are treasures.

The basic galloping riff of the song is very close to that of "Achilles Last Stand", hence the Zeppelin feel.

Listen to the voice! Ignore the video. This is the album/studio version played over an almost (but not quite) synchronous live performance.
Ann knew how to take her voice up to the edge of a shriek and stop. Very powerful. Doesn't hurt the performance that they created this song in a rage. Emotional sincerity matters.

"Crazy On You", "Magic Man", "Straight On", "Even It Up" are all worth checking out & analyzing. Barracuda definitely has one of the greatest riffs ever.
You mention four great songs. "Even it Up" has distinct rhythmic complexity. In my view this was Heart aspiring to rhythmic tenor.
When "Magic Man" comes on it turns up.

What strikes me the most about Anne’s singing is that she does it’s almost effortlessly. I’ve heard many other singers cover their music but they have to work it so hard to hit those high notes. Anne has the power and technique to deliver it so smoothly! Love love love it!
I'm willing to bet she did a lot of hard work doing vocal strength exercises on a regular cadence that helped make it look and sound effortless. She's a pro of epic proportions. I've never heard another vocalist that could hit those high notes with so much power and yet maintain the personality of the lyric. One of kind. It's such a shame that her and Nancy aren't getting along. Maybe that changed and I haven't heard, but last time I checked, they no longer play and sing music together.

Ann’s husband knocked around one of Nancy’s boys, that caused a split for awhile. I saw them in Dallas I think three years ago for my birthday on 8/31, but have seen Ann is performing alone lately, so guess they didn’t enjoy the getting back together? They sounded just as good, had Joan Jett & the Blackhearts as an opener, great show.

Interesting note about Heart, most younger people miss. At the time they hit, everyone was trying to sound like The Eagles. Record companies were looking for the next Eagles. Heart was a stand out. They had their own sound. They were a singular breath of fresh air. In the context of the period, they were bold and unique.
Yeah they went the bold route of trying to sound exactly like a little band not many people have heard of called Led Zeppelin.
And on that note - Elizabeth hasn't reacted to Eagles!
In the mid 70s? I do believe Led Zeppelin were at their peak. I’m sure that record companies were looking for the next Eagles but I can’t believe they were blind to any other good band.

First time I saw Heart they opened for April Wine up here in Northern Ontario mid seventies woooow
I saw them live in 2010. It was the most amazing concert I'd ever seen - a masterclass in "how it's done". I brought a friend who had never been to a rock concert before, and she was blown away. "I felt like my heart was going to explode..." she said, her eyes wide. Yeah. That was about right.
Ann was 60, and brought down the fires of Heaven like the vocal goddess she is. Nancy was 56, and shredding the fabric of space/time like the guitar goddess she is. Church was in session, and there were no unbelievers. Truly awe inspiring... :)
Now that she is broken in take her to a Foo Fighters one soon.
Yeah, you can't go wrong with Heart. Those Wilson sisters are a true treasure. The 1st Ladies of Rock. There is a video of them doing "Alone" unplugged that just sends chills down my spine. I have been listening to them since the early days, and I never grow weary of them.

Ann is the best of all time. The song is a top 10 greatest rock song . I've been listening to this song for 45 years , it never gets old.
I still remember hearing this song for the first time and being immediately hooked in by that guitar growl. And then she started singing 😯! As someone who struggles to outwardly express anger, this song is one that helps me kind of 'decompress'. I tend to imagine her singing it with a contemptuous lip curl and/or one sardonic eyebrow cocked. It's such a powerful performance and intensely satisfying.
Shes an absolute LEGEND. Young her versus older her is SO different. Yet she can STILL blow out my eardrums!

Ann's amazing range and technique really gave Heart a huge amount of freedom in creating the melodic line. Fantastic.
Ann Wilson is one of the top rock vocalists of all time. She is up there with Freddie Mercury, Rob Halford. Top notch. The later career Heart albums are just as killer as the early albums are; Ann's voice gains so much rich character as she gets older. But back in the 1970's she was a slayer, her belting was out planting Robert Plant!
I dunno about "out belting". She had an awesome voice, and certainly had a powerful voice that could reach higher than he could, although he had an amazing range for a bloke. But power? You've listened to "Immigrant Song", right?

Don't sleep on Nancy she is an amazing singer and guitarist in her own right. And without her they wouldn't have had their first #1 hit with "These Dreams". Yep, took all the way until 1986 for them to reach #1, even with all the hits before this (they only broke into the top 40). I would definitely love to hear you react to that song and Nancy's style of singing.
Nancy's acoustic intro on "Dreamboat Annie" is still one of the greatest rock intros ever recorded.

@@zahira_rania No. Stevie did some memorable work, but she wrote songs for her vocal range, which was limited, and in recent years it has dropped at least a 3rd and her range has diminished further.

Anne is a Rock Goddess. I followed them from their first album. She always sang in the higher registers, definitely soprano.
That trippy alien sound at the end of Barracuda is guitarist Roger Fisher touching a 1/4" guitar lead to the vacuum tubes at the back of his amplifier, on a separately recorded track. This is according to his interview in Guitar Player magazine back in 1977. Heart rules!

I love how Ann's vocals are almost acting out her feelings.For example,the very beginning the "So!" has that barging into room feel.And the second chorus Ann sings "Barracuda" like she is introducing something like Ladies and gentlemen....Barracuda.
I can't get enough of this channel and choice of voices she analyzes. I feel her joy when she discusses this. I've seen copycat channels that seem to follow this show down to the bands and songs exactly and they just do not compete. Great stuff here.
Ann Wilson is undoubtedly one of the greatest vocalist in Rock History. I am rather surprised you havent yet done any Janis Joplin. I would absolutely be intrigued to see your reaction to some Janis Joplin.

I seen this tour when they did Portland Oregon. About 10 feet from the stage, and I fell in love with Ann Wilson during this song. The whole group was amazing!
I saw them at Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles in 1977 I was speechless, I had never heard women sing like this, and I've been a big fan ever since.
I always think of this family of riffs as "galloping", because they engender a strong feeling of motion and possibly hoofbeats.
The backing riff in Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is similar in that regard... they both just make you want to travel forwards to wherever.
Iron Maiden also has many riffs that have a galloping feel. Really gets the heart pumping.

How she takes her anger, turns it into a song, then they put it to such amazing music blows my mind. Saw this band in concert in 1977. They earned a lifetime fan. You see her sassy attitude in this song.
One of the most awesome parts to this song is that you have every instrument galloping along with each other. It's like holding on to wild horses. I'll bet a lot of speeding tickets were provoked by this song.

I spent some time with their early engineer, all his settings are based around her voice. Whatever he did to her voice he did to the other tracks. So it is more than just in performance but tone as well.
I actually saw them in concert and they were unbelievably awesome and they reproduced their music incredibly well. Very cool 😎.

I would highly recommend reacting to Heart's live performance of "Crazy on You" on the Midnight Special. There's a lot for you to see in her voice in that performance!

Heart is one of the great rock bands that started in the 70's. Ann Wilson has one of the most powerful female voices. And her sister Nancy can play a mean guitar. They have had so many great hits such as "Magic Man", "Crazy on You", "What About Love", "Never", "Dog & Butterfly", "These Dreams" & "Alone". In 2012 Ann & Nancy performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in a tribute to Led Zeppelin doing their classic song "Stairway To Heaven".
"These Dreams" features Nancy Wilson on Lead Vocal. The title song off their first album, "Dreamboat Annie" is gentle pastoral song. The other song off that album "Sing Child" has wild opening riff and a bit of an R&B feel. It also features Anne and Nancy's harmonies. And Anne plays the flute,

Anne and Nancy Wilson were absolutely amazing. I'll never forget seeing them perform in concert. For me, Dog and Butterfly was the most memorable pieces they did, but entirely for personal reasons.
Would love to see you analyze "Straight On". Lots of harmonics with her sister Nancy. I love listening to the two of them together. It's amazing how similar their voices are.

As someone who heard this song back in the 70s, the other thing that stood out was how hard rock it was. Women just didn't sound that way back then.

Heart was before Benatar.. I had Heart albums in high school, 70's. Pat Benatar's first hit the John Cougar/Mellancamp penned " I want a lover that won't drive me crazy" was I believe in 1980.

I struggle to listen to a lot of classic rock these days because, as a genre, it's been so overplayed in my life.... but this band is one of the exceptions that never gets old to me. Ann's gotta be one of the most engaging frontpeople in the genre. Sounds great and full of attitude on stage. Wish I'd been alive to see them at their prime.

When Nancy had her band a few years ago I didn't understand why she didn't do the lead vocals because she has an amazing voice.

I saw Heart live in 1980. Ann was still in her prime and she was just pitch perfect with eargasmic power and vocal chops for days. She was the real deal, no FX tricks, auto tune BS of today.

I first heard this song as a young kid, since I was born in 1967. Her voice just gave me goosebumps hearing this early version again. One of my favorite rhythm parts to play on the guitar, the intro. Crazy on you is awesome, as others have already noted. Nancy's acoustic guitar intro to that is nothing short of amazing.

Born in 67 too and was also captivated by it when I first heard it around 77. Annoyed the heck out of the local radio station with relentless phone in requests for this!!😄
This song is one of the first rock songs I ever heard that I can identify by name to this day. My parents listened exclusively to classical music when I was a kid. My Mom had been a music major in college. If pop, rock, or other contemporary music came on TV, she would usually deride it as 'junk'. About the most avant garde we got in those days was an 8-track tape of Wendy Carlos' Moog synthesizer recordings of "Switched on Bach". I wore that tape out.
One day I was playing around with my Dad's radio, and started tuning up and down the FM dial. At one point, I tuned to a station just in time to hear the opening chords of 'Barracuda' and I was riveted. I felt like maybe I shouldn't be as thrilled by this song as I was. But I was.
In retrospect, I'm convinced that my early exposure to Mozart, and Beethoven, and Schubert, and recordings of Andrés Segovia enhanced my enjoyment of the likes of Heart, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Kansas, and The Doors. So while Mom could have turned down her disdain a notch or three, the musicality, the dynamic range, the variation of time signature, the diversity of instrumentation in what I had been exposed to as a kid prepared me to appreciate when Heart or Kansas or Zeppelin goes into 7 or 12 for a few bars, or Pink Floyd makes a big part of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" a waltz.
The fact that I can point back to that one lazy summer afternoon, and the eye-opening jolt this song gave me means that 'Barracuda' will always have special importance to me.
I am extremely familiar with the 3/4 sections of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" but it had never occurred to me to dance them as a waltz. Well never too old etc.

I love the little moment of Elizabeth discovering that Nancy sings (stunningly), too! Folks always forget that she's singing note-for-note harmonies a third ABOVE Ann in their choruses & hooks. Especially on "Alone," where they're both damn near in the stratosphere for the entire chorus, & it's all straight belt. 😳
She also sings lead on their 80's ballad "These Dreams." Definitely react to their live performance of that from the aughts. She gives this improvised little nightingale trill at the end that just goes straight through the top of my head, every time.
Nancy does the whole “Jimmy Page arm up to the sky”, move! Freakin amazing! We need more girls that wanna be the band not just the band’s girlfriends. 🤗

This song was written, produced/performed so well in all aspects, it's near perfect. Maybe not "masterpiece" level, but getting close, in my opinion. It's just a really good song. I know this isn't a live performance, but these artists were really good during this period. 👍

The first breakout album Heart had was "Dreamboat Annie". I highly recommend playing it through side-to-side. The songs are stitched together and seem to naturally just "Flow". The opening song "Dreamboat Annie" transports the listener to another mood altogether and then closes with the same temperament where it began.

I saw Heart on their first tour. I forgot who they opened for but we weren’t expecting much from them. We’ll they ‘smoked’ the show, it was almost embarrassing getting through the main act while everyone was still roaring and calling for Heart! They are some magic girls!

Yeah Ann Wilson is one of the best vocalists, hands down. One of my favourites is "Dog and a Butterfly". She can belt with the best, but she can also sing the most beautiful ballad too.
I see a lot of people on here saying, “Yeah, Ann’s great, but what about ?” Sorry, but there is NO ONE like Ann Wilson. She is in a class all by herself. As far as I’m concerned, the female rockers of today have to give thanks to Ann. She reallly paved the way and all other rock singers are to be compared to her. Love you Ann! ❤️
The only voice I put on a par with Ann Wilson (but not in hard rock) is Karen Carpenter, who is categorized as soft rock but is really more smooth jazz (inspired by her virtuoso drumming). Those two women are alone in their natural talent and skillful mastery.
(There are similar reasons why Elizabeth Zharoff raves about both Ann Wilson and Karen Carpenter.)
