Saw them live at Memorial Stadium in Seattle back in the 1970’s after their song Barracuda was topping the charts. They were amazing performers, all at the top of their game! My favorite band at that time, so extra magical to be there!
I saw them side stage, as a kid, and got to meet them around 1980. My cousin was the venue security head, and the crew, band, and me even played touch football in the back area, near the bus parking!! I was completely smitten with Nancy, and she knew it, so she dedicated her acoustic guitar solo before Crazy On You to "my adorable backstage cutie"... I was the happiest 12 year old on Earth!! Heart was awesome, live, and they were the nicest people to a young fan. I still smile everytime I hear that intro.
A great example of someone knowing what it means to be in a band is the recently passed Christine McVie. If you don’t look at your fellow players as a”team” and enjoy and respect them in that light, there will always be a chasm.
Unfortunately this is what happens to a band when you have enormous talent. Ann and Nancy were the face of Heart on most of album covers thats what sold and when Ann sang her voice became the star. This band would not have been successful with out her voice. Get over it be happy you were apart of it instead of tearing down the opportunity you had. Jealous dudes, you should be grateful you were part of it.
i was pulled over in my camaro- 1968- the song on my 8 track was "the iron butterfly theme- first lp. the cop said i wouldn't be able to hear a siren- no ticket- but a funny memory! lol

Agreed. Teenage boys, myself included, were drawn to Heart for the heavy guitars and rhythms, not the shrieking vocals. The 1980's, or Heart 2, was/is not Heart. It's the Ann and Nancy Duet group.

Without Anne Wilson's magnificent voice, there would not be a Heart. Not many women Rock bands back then so you had to kick it out of the park, and Ann did.

My husband got me “Dreamboat Annie” on DVD. I have not been to the beach without at least one playing Dreamboat Annie when cassette Walkman’s were a thing. Plus, my Nonna chose the Anglican name Annie when my family immigrated here from Sicily & she was so beautiful that she’s my Dreamboat Annie. I guess it’s the axiom everyone hears what they want to hear.
I love that record and not sure if it's a concept type but I like to think while listening, that Ann is reflecting on some of her diary writings as a kid. All she needs for a rhythm section are a washboard and a couple of spoons.
Ann Wilson stood by the band three times, for their biggest breaks in the industry. Mushroom Records/Mike Flicker only wanted to sign Ann when they first did a demo (Nancy hadn't joined yet) and she declined. The second time, after Nancy joined and they had original songs, Mushroom/Flicker only wanted Ann and Nancy, but they insisted on the band (which Derosier wasn't a part of, by the way) and Flicker recognized it was non-negotiable because of their relationships, so the band was signed. Steve Fossen confirms this in another video of this "series." Then the Capitol Records president only wanted to sign Ann in 1984, but she convinced him to sign the whole band (which already had Mark Andes and Denny Carmassi as members since 1982). She recorded the Almost Paradise duet for Footlose which was a big deal and could very easily go on a successful solo career specially if outside songwriters were writing hits for her. That was like the perfect time to do it, like many other vocalists have done in the 80s. She didn't.
She has stated in interviews that she did not want co writers and she did not want to sing other peoples songs.. so she trashes some of their greatest hits in the 80s because the songs were not "hers"... she def has issues
Ann’s solo cds and tours are and were proof positive that she’s not content trotting out the oldies; meanwhile Nancy Wilson’s Heart videos on TH-cam are just embarrassingly tired and bad.
Mushroom records envisioned for Ann Wilson producing mediocre rock music right from the onset of her career. They envisioned her as a much higher octave soprano version of Karen carpenter. She would be surrounded by essentially session musicians all incapable of punching up and tweaking her songwriting the way the band she had at her disposal could. Do we really want to call it standing by the band or do we want to call it her choosing for herself not to be putting out material that would belong alongside the Carpenters Olivia Newton-John Captain and tennille Helen Reddy etc. In other words what she was forced to accept in 1985 without that original band to tweak her sheet music to something with rock credibility they were going to force upon her right from the onset of her career had she not made it wise decision. That is a decision that eventually got her to the Rock and roll Hall of Fame while listening to mushroom records would not have. That's what she had the foresight to think about. Her loyalty was based on recognizing that they have something special together. Put together in bold print. And everything that she together with Nancy have done after the departure of the original members has done nothing but hurt The credibility of heart in its deserving to be in the Rock and roll Hall of fame. My God they had to wait 14 years past the eligibility date to be inducted while had she not driven the original members out and let's say they went on until mid-80s and stopped they would have been a shoe in for first year eligibility induction. But here you are telling us that she should get credit for not wanting to become the 1985 heart right out of the gate.
that's not accurate, Michael Fisher was the manager, so watch what Derosier says right in start, Michael, Roger, Ann and Nancy sat down him, Howard and Steve telling them what they wanted, he doesn't go into detail but by this point the first album was recorded and it has a ton of studio and guests on it, so they were probably thinking that's what they would do for albums and these guys would just back them live and make min pay while the other 4 took all the money, and the three to their credit said no.
I’ve seen Heart recently. Maybe 7 years ago. It was one of the best shows I’ve seen. They were super tight and their zeppelin covers are untouchable too. As far as trash talking them is concerned, I pay very little attention to that. In the late 70’s, I recall a studio guitarist trash talking Roger Fisher’s musical abilities. I paid no attention to him because I didn’t know if it was true. I take this video at the same value. I don’t know Ann and Nancy. I know people who’ve met and worked with them and have only heard good things about them so I’m going to leave it at that.
I have enjoyed all different eras of Heart. For those who look down upon their 80s hair/keyboards phase, I think it is worth remembering that many bands had to make similar adjustments, likely due to pressures from record labels and listening trends. Some notable bands that went with this flow include the Stones, Rush, Yes, Genesis, David Bowie, etc. Some bands fared better than others at this, and one could argue that Heart did quite well, to a large extent dominating that period with a string of hits and very solid albums. Once the glitz era faded, Heart flirted with an almost metal sound and eventually settled back to their classic blend of gutsy hard and acoustic songs. Like other bands, they weathered the tides of the music market, and did it well indeed. I actually really like and admire the variety that their deep catalogue encompasses.

I graduated in '84 and as a teen I loathed the "trend" to add a buncha smarmy keyboards to embellish a more guitar based band. ACK!!! Bands that featured keys as an integral part of their sound, such as The Cars and The Fixx, were great. But when the awful sprinkling keys all over each and every album for a major act to "stay with the times" reared it's head.... Ugh. Cringe
Totally. Heart 85 is easily their biggest selling album. That speaks for itself. People can say they don’t like it but the fact is that the rest of the world did. Majority rules.
This is a tough topic. Of course, every band member matters. Every band member deserves acknowledgment and respect. But if you’re in a band with Ann Wilson… hey, if you’re in HEART with Ann Wilson…you’re working with a one in a million performer, and that deserves acknowledgment and respect too. A lot of folks can play the parts but no one else can do exactly what she does. In a way, you should just count your blessings that you’re a part of it all… it’s not like you’re not part of an enormous legacy or anything!
Talent is probably the least important element in the equation. The point is that in any band, the members all need to understand and agree to the leadership dynamic and the lines of communication between members need to be maintained. You don't have to be bestest buddies, but what you do need is a commitment to the band's way of working, however that is determined.
It seems like, with these iconic rock bands with one of the fantastic singers up front, the drummer and the lead singer, far more often than not, just don't get along well. The singer is the one with the voice and the words. The drummer (unless he or she is a Don Henley type) doesn't. So, the drummer has issues. Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, etc etc. Trouble happened as well with Robin Zander and Bun E. as well...and Bun E. was out (although still maintained in some way, with some payment and status as a former member). I don't have any doubts Zander is a truly good guy. This situation? It's hard for me to not see it from Ann Wilson's POV really.
I think that is why Rush was able to be so successful: Only three guys who were void of ego and who really genuinely liked each other and respected each other's talents.

I remember hearing heart for the first time on mtv back in the early 80s. From the first time I saw the alone video I was captivated by Ann's voice. Such power, beauty, clarity, and tone. Then I heard their older stuff and was mystified by how well the songs were put together.
Her voice was powerful but to all of the guys, not nearly as powerful as the incredible, blazing guitars and intricate work along with the booming drums and work on the tech efects. All Anne had to do was sing and try to avoid missing a note like she almost did midway through Crazy on you but she recovered like a pro, just like the guys!
When I grew up in Tsawwassen BC Canada, Heart was in a little house down the road and you could hear them rehearsing. Beginnings of something great I guess.
Seve Fossen actually went into great detail about the whole Ann Wilson situation in an interview with Jeb Wright on "Classic Rock Revisited" back in 2013 when they were inducted into the HOF. She basically wanted the girls to have all the control and the group to be the Wilson sisters and backing band.
Let me explain. Whoever gets the power gets the money. Which is why everyone wants the power. I think Ann Wilson has the most powerful and expressive female voice in the history of R&R.
I got to see Heart in their Hay Day back in the day when Roger Fisher was still in the band. And that was my favorite era of heart with Roger Fisher I love that guy's guitar playing. I still have good memories of the concert.
It’s all ego for most lead singers. This is what brings a band’s downfall. When you have a ego that is ‘skies the limit’, you can’t play well with others. I’ve noticed over the last 30 years or so that these older bands have disintegrated over time over these egos. Don Henley, S. Nicks, Ann Wilson , whatever, get over yourselves. Ann and Nancy deluded themselves that they were Paige and Plant and they just weren't , It wasn't enough to have huge hits in the 80s that made them wealthy but they were pissed because they weren't Zeppelin and treated all of the band like turds . They are two bitter old broads who are filled with arrogance and delusion .

Why the band Queen lasted for so long, as they accepted every band member as an equal, to the point where Freddie would emphatically say to the media that he’s the lead SINGER, not the leader of the band. They didn’t just respect and accept each other personally, but artistically and professionally as well(Hot Space album disaster for example). When they all failed doing their solo stuff, they realized that they were far better off as a cohesive unit.
To be honest Stevie Nicks has been inducted twice in the hall of fame. Henley is fine on his own also. They were entitled to branch out. They are that talented on their own.
Just subbed to ur channel ... As a huge Heart fan (mostly the Roger Fisher era, but never stopped loving them. I am 63 & just got an Ann Wilson adult coloring book! Lol! Yep, I never knew those existed til recently!) I went to many of their concerts - hooked up with their stage mgr & he got me backstage every time. I met all the band & Ann & Nancy (I mainly wanted to meet Ann coz she was/is my idol!) They were all super nice to me except Howard, who seemed kind of arrogant. When Roger left I followed his new band The Roger Fisher Band & became pen pals with his fan club president. I sent her some of my poetry. Well, unbeknownst to me she let Rog read it & he actually hand-wrote me a very sweet letter telling me that I had talent & that I should pursue that & keep at it. I still keep in touch with him occasionally. Anyway, I loved the video! Thanks for the interviews!!
I saw Heart in '77 when Ann was thin...OMG she was so beautiful on the stage and her voice was incredible. They ended their show with a Led Zeppelin medley and Ann is one of the few people on earth who can sing at Robert Plants octaves...best Zep cover I ever heard.
The Wilson's are pretty humble about continuing to go to Led Zeppelin concerts, even after achieving some measure of success. Not backstage-- just sitting with the fans.
HEART Dreamboat Annie was the first vinyl record I ever bought, spending my $10 a week allowance money. Still had money left over for soda and candy! What a way to be introduced to rock and roll. An incredible album, I still love it, and I still have that record in my collection.
gave up after 4 minutes - not interested in dirty laundry however, ann was meant to have panic attacks which might have been why she thought differently than the rest, but there is a very good chance, that without ann, there would be no heart . . . for me personally, while the riffs in barracuda and especially magic man got me in as an early teen, it was ann's voice that did it for me - and looking at pictures of ann and nancy, not the rest of the band
Ann Wilson was certainly one of the best female singers of that era and arguably one of the best of all time. She had a Patsy Cline type of signature voice that cannot be duplicated. No one can copy the Ann Wilson sound. You can understand how the ego could take over with that kind of talent.
When you're that good somebody else is always trying to knock you off your game. The ego becomes a shield. It also makes you power through shit when your confidence is low. In a live performer, that's a requirement. The music industry can warp even the most humble personality over time. Scars, man. I think Ann Wilson is in a class of her own, definitely, as a female rock singer with stainless steel balls. She was a pioneer in arena rock history. Respect is due. Cheers.
True. The only singer that comes close to sounding like Ann Wilson, that I've heard, is Gretchen Wilson. She did a great job singing Baraccuda with Nine Inch Nails. And that was done live. Correction: it was Alice In Chains that backed her up. That what I get for commenting while drinking
She was/is incredible, but I spent the last 32 years thinking "All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You" was sung by Cher. It was one of those songs that I got annoyed with because it was overplayed on the radio. Point is that, while she's good, she's not unique.
I saw Heart 3 times in 85. First time Cheap Trick was the opening act. Probably the best show I've seen. Both bands killed it. They played 2 of my favorite songs which probably hasn't been played since. How can I refuse and Allies.
Cool stuff to hear from the guys. It must have been quite stressfull at times for anyone in the band for any given time, but so grateful for the bulk of their material which still remains essential and still being enjoyed by so many. To all cuurent and past members.THANK YOU!

After Private Audition I followed Heart casually. My favorite albums are always going to be Magazine, Dream Boat Annie, Little Queen, and Dog & Butterfly.
Bebe Le Strange was good too - especially the tracks, "Down on Me" and "Rockin Heaven Down" - of course, I could be biased since that was the first concert tour I ever saw from 8th row seats at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX in 1980.
@@ReelVisionary "Down On Me" is the most derivative tune they ever wrote. A horrible misstep if you ask me, but Ann did tear it up on the vocals. Musically it's a lame rip-off on the Beatles "She's so Heavy". Rolling Stone Magazine, which I can't stand, trashed it. I did agree with their assessment.
It can be very difficult being in a band. Creative differences, personality clashes, a million factors can enter. Most artists are passionate about their art and often times that gives one tunnel vision. The Beatles come to mind...we all wanted them to continue making magic but behind the scenes it was turning toxic .
I saw Heart (with Boston opening) in 1978, at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts in Vegas. One of the best shows I've ever seen. That lineup was the best iteration of the band, or at least the one I enjoyed the most.
I played in bar bands for many years myself, with all kinds of people and attitudes. People who are really good can often have “attitude” or different personalities from us regular working players. It’s just part of the dynamic for them and it feeds their performance (thought I was gonna say ego didn’t ya 🙂) its just one of the places their power comes from, it’s their fuel and I never had an issue dealing with it IF they truly had the skills. I don’t care too much for drama so that stuff never bothered me much. I appreciate when your preforming on that level and making pro money thing are different than bar band stuff but as a fan of Heart I think the girls have the chops. I saw them a few years ago in PC Beach Fl. and enjoyed it a lot, even the Pat Travers stuff and the Aretha Franklin cover, which was unexpected. I will say those early years were the best, amazing jams that deserve to be classics and the guys in this video were major contributors to that. I saw em in the late 70’s in Dayton Oh. and it was a rowdy, rockin show! 👍
@@jonblackers4339 - I don’t remember the guys name but they had a guitar player with them who had been in the Pat Travers band. They did a few of Pat’s songs, Too Rolling Stoned etc. Ann did a really nice job on Aretha’s tune Ain’t No Way, unexpected but I enjoyed it. She may sing better now than she ever has.
I was driving home from work this morning, and a local dj played a rendition of Blue Christmas. I'm thinking, I know that voice. The more I listened, the more it became clear. It was Ann Wilson. What a voice. Blew me away.
I’ve loved all phases of Heart. Ann could have went solo many times but didn’t. Heart is Ann and Nancy for me. Purists always have problem with change no matter what the genre. If bands never went through changes we would have missed out on some of the greatest albums. 🤷♀️
I can't say I am a purist as I am retro-discovering their old stuff just now. The band wasn't that big here in Europe, so mainly their commercial 80s stuff is known to broad audiences. All that being said, I was wondering why those first records are so terrific, but then a decline in song quality from my pov. I am finding out now about those lineup changes and struggles. I have to say that first albums contain superb songs that blew me away (how did I miss that before??). Classic lineup made awesome albums.
Ann did a few solo songs and a duet with Mike Reno for movie soundtracks. She also released a solo album. Nancy released a couple of solo albums. The first one was live. ‘All For Love’ was a solo song she did for the ‘Say Anything’ movie soundtrack. Nancy does a music video for the song too.
The original lineup for Heart was the best. Their undoing came as a result of them dating each other. When the relationships broke up, members started leaving the band. Like I said before, if Ann were more secure with herself, she would have let the band in her heart. I have to say, they were tight professionally. They sounded better live. Ann is one of the best rock singers out there, male or female. I love watching their 70's stuff. Ann was really sexy back then.
I agree that their ‘70s stuff was the best. Even though they had huge success in the ‘80, I have always fet that there wasn’t as much fire in their music after Roger Fisher and Mike Desrosiers left the band. I lost interest in the band after that.
I just turned 73 and I was a long haired musician myself back in the day, I saw "Spirit" in concert at least 3 times including the "Texas International Pop Festival" on Labor Day weekend 1969. Starting in 1968 and I can say without a doubt, they were one of the best live rock and roll bands I ever witnessed and I've seen everybody from Jimi Hendrix - 3 times to Led Zeppelin - 5 times and everybody in-between. Anyways, I always thought that Spirit was more than good enough to be a super group but for some reason it just didn't happen. True Story, back in late 68 or early 69, Spirit played in Fort Worth, Texas in Concert and later that night they actually showed up and played a few songs at a local night club called the "Circus Club", it was a local teenage rock and roll club. That's when I met Mark and the others in the Band and all I can add is that it's was a really great night and a best memory that I will never forget. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Randy was the negative element to Spirit that kept them from more greatness. Randy had a perfect opportunity to show a moment of respect to others with me and passed. Thankfully his step dad stepped in as he had to do many times for Randy and made the moment positive. The Commander Cassidy saved the day.
Ann Wilson is amazing! The band would have never reached its height of fame. Without that amazing voice. Everyone in Heart, are amazing musicians. But none of them would be ANYWHERE without Ann. In every band there has to be a leader. SHE was it.

@@jackzeldon2883 These guys didn't luck into playing with Ann and Nancy. They didn't join the Ann and Nancy Wilson band. Steve Fossen and Roger Fisher founded a band that added Ann later and became Heart. But Ann paid them back by taking a hand in firing both of them a few years later.
Mike Derosier's analysis of Ann is right on. I always felt like it was Ann Wilson first, then Nancy and then the rest of them, not a complete band. It came through that way in the music and album art work and live in concert. It wasn't hard to see even as a teenager growing up in the late 70s
Amen. Only the 'original' band and in my opinion albums, hold water. I continue to like their first album which is great. I grew up in Kirkland, one city down from Bellevue, where the Wilson's grew up. I remember seeing Fischer's post-Heart band, Ten Bulls, before a crowd of five at the Sittin' Bull Pub at "Totem Lake Shopping Center," in the 80's, etc. In other words, the truth about the band was easily available to those from the area. And the truth is that much of the B.S. that Anne said in the 70's, she says today, as does Nancy. Today, Ann talks of the terrible treatment she received decades ago. Back then - seldom a whisper or hint of a complaint. With hindsight, oh yeah - she's got an endless list of complaints. Many of the things that she complains about are things without which, she would never have succeeded. That dynamic messes with her. I enjoyed the Wilson's audiobook biography and yeah, poor Ann went through a lot as a kid. As do we all. There are also a lot of lies in the book. She claims she was an introverted teenager. Trouble is, she told the Seattle Times back in the seventies, the guys she hung out with as a teen were a "punks, almost thugs, but they were the only ones that were really alive." There's a weird pattern from Ann in particular of literally being angry with the past. So, she re-invents the past. (Most hilarious of all is when the sisters routinely claimed they were Canadians.) The simple truth is that Heart ran out of great songs pretty quickly. We're talking a band that honed their craft in weird Bellevue churches and keggars. It took them literally years to get good enough to make the first LP. I think Magazine would have been a second great album but yeah, Mushroom Record's greed, shattered the band forever. Without great songs, they've sort of been a greatest hits band ever since with reference to their early success in the 70's. The 80's was largely the work of outside writers.

Heart was always about Ann and Nancy. No one went to a Heart concert to check out the rhythm section, they went to hear Ann's powerful vocals and see Nancy jam on the electric guitar.
Ann and Nancy are incredibly talented, wonderful human beings who happen to be flawed, like all people are. But overall, they are good people and certainly much nicer and more genuine than most rockstars
I can tell you as a long time musician- some of the nicest people you'd have for friends are not folks that are fun to be in a band with. Bands create dynamics more like business than that of a friendship. There are people i have played with that I love tio hang with yet I hated playing with them
In his book, Lou Gramm discussed when Foreigner toured with Heart in 1979. He said the guys were really nice, but Ann and Nancy were standoff-ish. However, he also said that might have been because Double Vision was selling so well that some venues flipped the bill, making Foreigner the headliner instead of the opening act.
Fan of Heart, saw Heart in concert in the 70's and still love their music. I don't know what all the surprise is about Ann and or Nancy thinking she was the tops. Here we have 2 sisters with amazing talent, Ann singing lead 98% of the time, both sisters Alpha females for sure with Ann being more so than her sister. Heck, this kind of stuff happened all through music history as we see have seen great bands break apart because maybe just one member wanted to their own thing or sometimes a member pushes another member/members away due to their intense nature. Hey, musicians are artists and as such, have some weird and far out behavior. I know, I play drums and their is nothing too normal with me!!!! Just saying! I do like the interviews though.
"Alpha Females" - get real! Watch the short video of Ann crying in the studio in the mid-80s because she either got dumped by some quickie guy or some other drama happened. She's a basket case in that video. The sisters had their best success when they were directed (aka LED) by strong males like the Fishers in the 70s and Capitol executives in the 1980s. Since then, they haven't done much.
Seems it was hardest on Roger Fisher and his career. Thats no reflection on the tremendous talent elsewhere in the band only that Master Guitarists often can branch out much easier than Bass players or Drummers and the like. Still to this day I haven't heard any axman ever even get near the musical corner Roger worked. He was tremendous. I can go down to the local guitar bar and hear talent ooze. But Rogers input to that band was clearly in a class by itself...
Derosier has said that Roger has something special with the way he plays. I'd agree. His playing touched me at a young age, when I first heard the Magic Man extended solo.
I worked for a booking agency in Seattle back in the day. One of the better groups we had was named "Whiteheart", a solid rock'n'roll band. They moved to Vancouver and latter added Nancy and then Ann. The sisters were added to the band, they did not start it and hire the players.

I completely agree. He played very complicated and hard pounding rhythms that were integral to the Heart sound. Skilled musicians like that don't come around that often. All the musicians in that band, including Nancy, were exceptional.
In my opinion, he was good - not Bonham good though! It's a bit of a stretch. Bonham had his own style. Much like dude from Rush. You can hear them play and identify them as if hearing their vocals but not Michael. Good but typical - you play in a rock band good. I dont play drums, no disrespect to him. Just my opinion. I just saw Heart on New Years Eve with the band that Ann did her latest solo record with. They were fantastic. Ann at 73 can still belt it. She’s a living legend.
Heart came to kamloops bc, canada years ago. Definately no l.a. Or toronto and yet they played like they were playing for the pope and they gave us multiple encors. They put on a show that left me /us feeling in total awe of professionals. They survived decade after decade to do what they do. After many bands or singers packed it in. Very blessed to have seen them Live and made the concert an event that even today when i see heart i have to stop drop roll and remember thinking how many men or male bands can even hold a candle to them? When they pulled off stairway to heavan - i got teary and find it so emotional to watch the pros deliver art music and professionalism in the music industry.
Steve Fossen and Mike Derosier’s band, Heart by Heart, played my little town a few years ago. I’ve been big fan of Heart since Little Queen so I was stoked. They crushed it and sounded absolutely great. I so wish they would come back to my region so I could see them again.

As someone who also has spent many years in a successful rock band, with both make and female members…it is a tougher “go” than a band with all one gender. Ultimately, romances happen and end, which effect things, even more than the normal personality conflicts. Heart has survived despite this…largely as a “band”…or at least the early version and then the 80s version, during it primary “hits” years. It takes a special male personality to be able to work with women players long-term.
Michael used to come to our gigs when we played in North Seattle. My snare head was worn out one night so I swapped it out and asked him to sign it. He did and I still have it and it has a permanent spot on my glory wall. We talked a lot about Heart and everything he said here is exactly what he said back then. Michael, if you're reading this, I'm sure you don't remember me but maybe Chrissy and playing at the club Christie's in Fife for her album. I was the drummer. You're the nicest and most humble drummer I've ever met. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. I still have the photo of you, me and Steve. I'll never forget those times. You are a legend.
Midnight Special did so much for getting bands out to the entire country. I still remember their appearance, that helped a person identify with a performer or band when they were on the radio
40 years ago in December 1982 Steve and Mike and Roger were already out of the band it's been over 40 years now ..Ann and Nancy kept the heart band going for decades they were always part of a band
Saw Mark Andes play with Spirit at Ebbet’s Field in Denver and then with Firefall in Boulder at I think Tulagis. Then at Folsom Field in Boulder with Heart. Iconic rock figure.

Wow, thanks for posting those interviews with the guys! I've always wanted to hear something (anything) from the band members of those two eras of Heart. We always got to hear from Ann and Nancy but those guys were really the backbone (or, ahem, heart) of Heart. Mark Andes in particular----I saw Heart twice during his tenure with them and I was constantly watching him and the others because I, too, thought of Heart as a "band." All of the guys were fantastic and I've often wondered what happened that Heart was constantly changing lineups it seemed. This is the first I've really heard about Ann not really being into the band structure of playing, and wanting to be her own star.. If she felt that way, she should have just been solo from the beginning, but from what I understand she and Nancy came into an original lineup that didn't have women in the band, so maybe they got used to playing with others. It's sad to hear about Ann having an ego like that. She can still wail like nobody's business but when you treat people as being less than you, what's the use? Again, great stuff! I'm going to check out the rest of the heart videos you've posted. Keep up the great work!
They are both bitter old women , They couldn't stand all of their hits in the 80s that made them tons of money because those two deluded themselves that they were Led Zeppelin . And they treated the band members like nothing but hired chumps but they got their way and now haven't had a hit since the early 90s .
Musicians downfall is their ego, no matter what level. But it is in their prerogative to leave the band because they feel not respected for their world class gift. . My opinion is If you find yourself w talent and package such as the Wilson sisters, if you want to have a dream career, play second fiddle.
I saw the band when they were called White Hart at inglemore high school in Kenmore wash in the early1970 they played alot of covers I partyed at one of their houses in Kirkland that had a slide from the upstairs bedroom deck to the pool that was in the late 70s then in the late 90s I lived in Woodinville next to the Wilson's horse Ranch I couldn't believe how the sisters treated the guys after they parted ways Mike Drosher is a friend and fellow drummer buddie ,Roger Fisher had a ego problem back in the day he didn't like the playing under the sisters he wanted to be the star so the guys try ten bulls that flopped it's a hard life in that business I've been playing for 55 years n haven't made squat for money playing music I sell instraments and repair them but still play n sing in a band
I lived directly across the street from the Wilson's big white house in Woodinville from '84 to '86... I grew up in the Edmonds area and went to Mountlake Terrace HS so we were from the same general area.. (I think Mike D went to Woodway HS)
This is great. DeRosier was a monster on those early Heart records and Mike Flicker deserves a medal for how well he recorded not just the songs, but those drums in particular. Some of the best rock records ever made still lacked a decent drum mix, but that was obviously one of Flicker's strengths.

Getting pieces of the same puzzle from different perspectives - but dovetailing in a way that the consistencies jumped out. ??? Ann was ...is a Diva, main song writer, and her talent was was front and center. They also persevered beyond the original band to create more hits. She was the "frontman" of Heart. Hate to say it, but it was her show. ....And, her show is still going. One could argue that the "rock band culture" had a male bias. As far as financial stuff goes, sounds like it was fair. But, these guys were following Ann's lead because it was financially beneficial. Ann's talent carries her with any good band.
When I was in the park service coming from St. Helens, and Cle Elm Ranger station. We who stop at the truck stop in of their house and clean up and eat. Dog and Butterfly is my favorite song.

As someone who was a part of the "Seattle Scene", I was offered a bass audition with Randy Hansen, played with Wells and Arrington of Metal Church, and have access to Floyd Rose's steel billet prototype,... MD was a TOTAL PRICK to me when I was invited to Heart interview at KJR in Seattle at their last performance on their Bébé le Strange Tour. I remember you Mike! AH!
They had the Speedway Jam in Toledo, Ohio after they released "Little Queen". I heard "love alive" during that tour and kind of let it slip way back into my memories. About 2009 I heard it again and it was like instant transport to that concert back in 1980. They were still pounding it out. It was great.
Imho Heart stopped being Heart and started being a corporate hit 💔 machine after the former members ceased as members of Heart. Roger Fischer, Michael Derossier and Steve Fossen were what made the original sound that attracted me to Heart. They had 3 distinct phases to my way of thinking. The original Heart then the Corporate phase where it was just about making hits and ceased being a cohesive band. Then it was Anne and Nancy Wilson and a few side men.
Just saw, HEART at the Acrisure arena in Palm Desert 12-28-23 & it was so AWESOME! Anne and Nancy are really a major part of Heart even if that wasn't how it started back in the 70's! According to my understanding this is who is playing with HEART now The band's current lineup includes the Wilson sisters, drummer Denny Fongheiser (from 1993 to 1995, and since 2019), guitarists Craig Bartock (since 2003) and Ryan Waters (since 2019), bassist Andy Stoller and keyboardist Dan Walker (both since 2019)
Ann Wilson is one of the top 4 or 5 female singers of the rock era. Full stop. And what did she get for her trouble? Record company lackies dogging her for years about her weight, so when this guy talks about insecurity, grain of salt. I knew Anne when she and I went to Bellevue Community College in 1969-70. we took music classes and hung out with a "music" crowd. she was a very nice young lady. I left Seattle and I was kind of shocked when they hit it big years later.

Ann is the extraordinary talent in the band. Heart could have been called the Wilson Sisters since, at the beginning, they wrote all the hit songs.

Saw them live at Memorial Stadium in Seattle back in the 1970’s after their song Barracuda was topping the charts. They were amazing performers, all at the top of their game! My favorite band at that time, so extra magical to be there!

I saw them side stage, as a kid, and got to meet them around 1980. My cousin was the venue security head, and the crew, band, and me even played touch football in the back area, near the bus parking!! I was completely smitten with Nancy, and she knew it, so she dedicated her acoustic guitar solo before Crazy On You to "my adorable backstage cutie"... I was the happiest 12 year old on Earth!! Heart was awesome, live, and they were the nicest people to a young fan. I still smile everytime I hear that intro.

Mike Derosier is probably the most underrated drummer of the 70s and 80s. He is obviously influenced by John Bonham and is his equal in my opinion

Agreed. Teenage boys, myself included, were drawn to Heart for the heavy guitars and rhythms, not the shrieking vocals. The 1980's, or Heart 2, was/is not Heart. It's the Ann and Nancy Duet group.

Without Anne Wilson's magnificent voice, there would not be a Heart. Not many women Rock bands back then so you had to kick it out of the park, and Ann did.

My husband got me “Dreamboat Annie” on DVD. I have not been to the beach without at least one playing Dreamboat Annie when cassette Walkman’s were a thing. Plus, my Nonna chose the Anglican name Annie when my family immigrated here from Sicily & she was so beautiful that she’s my Dreamboat Annie. I guess it’s the axiom everyone hears what they want to hear.
Agree! The first time I played it, I had to listen to the whole album twice. I was a teen at the time, and had never heard anything quite like it.
I love that record and not sure if it's a concept type but I like to think while listening, that Ann is reflecting on some of her diary writings as a kid. All she needs for a rhythm section are a washboard and a couple of spoons.
First I heard them- my sister had it
Ann Wilson stood by the band three times, for their biggest breaks in the industry. Mushroom Records/Mike Flicker only wanted to sign Ann when they first did a demo (Nancy hadn't joined yet) and she declined.
The second time, after Nancy joined and they had original songs, Mushroom/Flicker only wanted Ann and Nancy, but they insisted on the band (which Derosier wasn't a part of, by the way) and Flicker recognized it was non-negotiable because of their relationships, so the band was signed. Steve Fossen confirms this in another video of this "series."
Then the Capitol Records president only wanted to sign Ann in 1984, but she convinced him to sign the whole band (which already had Mark Andes and Denny Carmassi as members since 1982). She recorded the Almost Paradise duet for Footlose which was a big deal and could very easily go on a successful solo career specially if outside songwriters were writing hits for her. That was like the perfect time to do it, like many other vocalists have done in the 80s. She didn't.
She has stated in interviews that she did not want co writers and she did not want to sing other peoples songs.. so she trashes some of their greatest hits in the 80s because the songs were not "hers"... she def has issues
Ann’s solo cds and tours are and were proof positive that she’s not content trotting out the oldies; meanwhile Nancy Wilson’s Heart videos on TH-cam are just embarrassingly tired and bad.
Mushroom records envisioned for Ann Wilson producing mediocre rock music right from the onset of her career. They envisioned her as a much higher octave soprano version of Karen carpenter. She would be surrounded by essentially session musicians all incapable of punching up and tweaking her songwriting the way the band she had at her disposal could. Do we really want to call it standing by the band or do we want to call it her choosing for herself not to be putting out material that would belong alongside the Carpenters Olivia Newton-John Captain and tennille Helen Reddy etc. In other words what she was forced to accept in 1985 without that original band to tweak her sheet music to something with rock credibility they were going to force upon her right from the onset of her career had she not made it wise decision. That is a decision that eventually got her to the Rock and roll Hall of Fame while listening to mushroom records would not have. That's what she had the foresight to think about. Her loyalty was based on recognizing that they have something special together. Put together in bold print. And everything that she together with Nancy have done after the departure of the original members has done nothing but hurt The credibility of heart in its deserving to be in the Rock and roll Hall of fame. My God they had to wait 14 years past the eligibility date to be inducted while had she not driven the original members out and let's say they went on until mid-80s and stopped they would have been a shoe in for first year eligibility induction. But here you are telling us that she should get credit for not wanting to become the 1985 heart right out of the gate.

that's not accurate, Michael Fisher was the manager, so watch what Derosier says right in start, Michael, Roger, Ann and Nancy sat down him, Howard and Steve telling them what they wanted, he doesn't go into detail but by this point the first album was recorded and it has a ton of studio and guests on it, so they were probably thinking that's what they would do for albums and these guys would just back them live and make min pay while the other 4 took all the money, and the three to their credit said no.

I’ve seen Heart recently. Maybe 7 years ago. It was one of the best shows I’ve seen. They were super tight and their zeppelin covers are untouchable too. As far as trash talking them is concerned, I pay very little attention to that. In the late 70’s, I recall a studio guitarist trash talking Roger Fisher’s musical abilities. I paid no attention to him because I didn’t know if it was true. I take this video at the same value. I don’t know Ann and Nancy. I know people who’ve met and worked with them and have only heard good things about them so I’m going to leave it at that.
I have enjoyed all different eras of Heart. For those who look down upon their 80s hair/keyboards phase, I think it is worth remembering that many bands had to make similar adjustments, likely due to pressures from record labels and listening trends. Some notable bands that went with this flow include the Stones, Rush, Yes, Genesis, David Bowie, etc. Some bands fared better than others at this, and one could argue that Heart did quite well, to a large extent dominating that period with a string of hits and very solid albums. Once the glitz era faded, Heart flirted with an almost metal sound and eventually settled back to their classic blend of gutsy hard and acoustic songs. Like other bands, they weathered the tides of the music market, and did it well indeed. I actually really like and admire the variety that their deep catalogue encompasses.

Bands that featured keys as an integral part of their sound, such as The Cars and The Fixx, were great.
But when the awful sprinkling keys all over each and every album for a major act to "stay with the times" reared it's head.... Ugh. Cringe
Totally. Heart 85 is easily their biggest selling album. That speaks for itself. People can say they don’t like it but the fact is that the rest of the world did. Majority rules.

This is a tough topic. Of course, every band member matters. Every band member deserves acknowledgment and respect. But if you’re in a band with Ann Wilson… hey, if you’re in HEART with Ann Wilson…you’re working with a one in a million performer, and that deserves acknowledgment and respect too. A lot of folks can play the parts but no one else can do exactly what she does. In a way, you should just count your blessings that you’re a part of it all… it’s not like you’re not part of an enormous legacy or anything!

Being in a band is harder than a marriage, 4-5 different personalities and opinions. AND they must have the talent.

Talent is probably the least important element in the equation. The point is that in any band, the members all need to understand and agree to the leadership dynamic and the lines of communication between members need to be maintained. You don't have to be bestest buddies, but what you do need is a commitment to the band's way of working, however that is determined.
It seems like, with these iconic rock bands with one of the fantastic singers up front, the drummer and the lead singer, far more often than not, just don't get along well. The singer is the one with the voice and the words. The drummer (unless he or she is a Don Henley type) doesn't. So, the drummer has issues. Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, etc etc.
Trouble happened as well with Robin Zander and Bun E. as well...and Bun E. was out (although still maintained in some way, with some payment and status as a former member). I don't have any doubts Zander is a truly good guy.
This situation? It's hard for me to not see it from Ann Wilson's POV really.
I think that is why Rush was able to be so successful: Only three guys who were void of ego and who really genuinely liked each other and respected each other's talents.

I remember hearing heart for the first time on mtv back in the early 80s. From the first time I saw the alone video I was captivated by Ann's voice. Such power, beauty, clarity, and tone. Then I heard their older stuff and was mystified by how well the songs were put together.
Her voice was powerful but to all of the guys, not nearly as powerful as the incredible, blazing guitars and intricate work along with the booming drums and work on the tech efects. All Anne had to do was sing and try to avoid missing a note like she almost did midway through Crazy on you but she recovered like a pro, just like the guys!
‘Alone’ came out in the late ‘80s, not early.
When I grew up in Tsawwassen BC Canada, Heart was in a little house down the road and you could hear them rehearsing. Beginnings of something great I guess.
Seve Fossen actually went into great detail about the whole Ann Wilson situation in an interview with Jeb Wright on "Classic Rock Revisited" back in 2013 when they were inducted into the HOF. She basically wanted the girls to have all the control and the group to be the Wilson sisters and backing band.

I got to see Heart in their Hay Day back in the day when Roger Fisher was still in the band. And that was my favorite era of heart with Roger Fisher I love that guy's guitar playing. I still have good memories of the concert.
My favorite song of theirs, Dream of the Archer- sibling harmonies, so beautifully arranged.

It’s all ego for most lead singers. This is what brings a band’s downfall. When you have a ego that is ‘skies the limit’, you can’t play well with others. I’ve noticed over the last 30 years or so that these older bands have disintegrated over time over these egos. Don Henley, S. Nicks, Ann Wilson , whatever, get over yourselves. For All the former band members of Heart that have contributed GREATLY to the sound of Heart, WE THANK YOU! Especially you Roger Fischer!

Ann and Nancy deluded themselves that they were Paige and Plant and they just weren't , It wasn't enough to have huge hits in the 80s that made them wealthy but they were pissed because they weren't Zeppelin and treated all of the band like turds . They are two bitter old broads who are filled with arrogance and delusion .
Exactly. Why the band Queen lasted for so long, as they accepted every band member as an equal, to the point where Freddie would emphatically say to the media that he’s the lead SINGER, not the leader of the band. They didn’t just respect and accept each other personally, but artistically and professionally as well(Hot Space album disaster for example). When they all failed doing their solo stuff, they realized that they were far better off as a cohesive unit.
To be honest Stevie Nicks has been inducted twice in the hall of fame. Henley is fine on his own also. They were entitled to branch out. They are that talented on their own.
Just subbed to ur channel ... As a huge Heart fan (mostly the Roger Fisher era, but never stopped loving them. I am 63 & just got an Ann Wilson adult coloring book! Lol! Yep, I never knew those existed til recently!) I went to many of their concerts - hooked up with their stage mgr & he got me backstage every time. I met all the band & Ann & Nancy (I mainly wanted to meet Ann coz she was/is my idol!) They were all super nice to me except Howard, who seemed kind of arrogant. When Roger left I followed his new band The Roger Fisher Band & became pen pals with his fan club president. I sent her some of my poetry. Well, unbeknownst to me she let Rog read it & he actually hand-wrote me a very sweet letter telling me that I had talent & that I should pursue that & keep at it. I still keep in touch with him occasionally. Anyway, I loved the video! Thanks for the interviews!!

I saw Heart in '77 when Ann was thin...OMG she was so beautiful on the stage and her voice was incredible. They ended their show with a Led Zeppelin medley and Ann is one of the few people on earth who can sing at Robert Plants octaves...best Zep cover I ever heard.
Nobody does Led Zeppelin better than the Wilson sisters.

The Wilson's are pretty humble about continuing to go to Led Zeppelin concerts, even after achieving some measure of success. Not backstage-- just sitting with the fans.

HEART Dreamboat Annie was the first vinyl record I ever bought, spending my $10 a week allowance money. Still had money left over for soda and candy! What a way to be introduced to rock and roll. An incredible album, I still love it, and I still have that record in my collection.

One can learn to play an instrument very well. One cannot learn to sing like Ann Wilson...that's talent. It might be unfair, but that's the way it is.

Ann Wilson was certainly one of the best female singers of that era and arguably one of the best of all time. She had a Patsy Cline type of signature voice that cannot be duplicated. No one can copy the Ann Wilson sound. You can understand how the ego could take over with that kind of talent.
When you're that good somebody else is always trying to knock you off your game. The ego becomes a shield. It also makes you power through shit when your confidence is low. In a live performer, that's a requirement. The music industry can warp even the most humble personality over time. Scars, man. I think Ann Wilson is in a class of her own, definitely, as a female rock singer with stainless steel balls. She was a pioneer in arena rock history. Respect is due. Cheers.
True. The only singer that comes close to sounding like Ann Wilson, that I've heard, is Gretchen Wilson. She did a great job singing Baraccuda with Nine Inch Nails. And that was done live.

She was/is incredible, but I spent the last 32 years thinking "All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You" was sung by Cher. It was one of those songs that I got annoyed with because it was overplayed on the radio. Point is that, while she's good, she's not unique.
I saw Heart 3 times in 85. First time Cheap Trick was the opening act. Probably the best show I've seen. Both bands killed it. They played 2 of my favorite songs which probably hasn't been played since. How can I refuse and Allies.
Cool stuff to hear from the guys. It must have been quite stressfull at times for anyone in the band for any given time, but so grateful for the bulk of their material which still remains essential and still being enjoyed by so many. To all cuurent and past members.THANK YOU!

After Private Audition I followed Heart casually. My favorite albums are always going to be Magazine, Dream Boat Annie, Little Queen, and Dog & Butterfly.
Bebe Le Strange was good too - especially the tracks, "Down on Me" and "Rockin Heaven Down" - of course, I could be biased since that was the first concert tour I ever saw from 8th row seats at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX in 1980.
Their first album was far and away their best one.
@@ReelVisionary "Down On Me" is the most derivative tune they ever wrote. A horrible misstep if you ask me, but Ann did tear it up on the vocals. Musically it's a lame rip-off on the Beatles "She's so Heavy". Rolling Stone Magazine, which I can't stand, trashed it. I did agree with their assessment.
It can be very difficult being in a band.
Creative differences, personality clashes, a million factors can enter.
Most artists are passionate about their art and often times that gives one tunnel vision.
The Beatles come to mind...we all wanted them to continue making magic but behind the scenes it was turning toxic .
When one or two members get all the attention and accolades it makes it even more difficult.
I saw Heart (with Boston opening) in 1978, at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts in Vegas.
One of the best shows I've ever seen. That lineup was the best iteration of the band, or at least the one I enjoyed the most.
I played in bar bands for many years myself, with all kinds of people and attitudes. People who are really good can often have “attitude” or different personalities from us regular working players. It’s just part of the dynamic for them and it feeds their performance (thought I was gonna say ego didn’t ya 🙂) its just one of the places their power comes from, it’s their fuel and I never had an issue dealing with it IF they truly had the skills. I don’t care too much for drama so that stuff never bothered me much. I appreciate when your preforming on that level and making pro money thing are different than bar band stuff but as a fan of Heart I think the girls have the chops. I saw them a few years ago in PC Beach Fl. and enjoyed it a lot, even the Pat Travers stuff and the Aretha Franklin cover, which was unexpected. I will say those early years were the best, amazing jams that deserve to be classics and the guys in this video were major contributors to that. I saw em in the late 70’s in Dayton Oh. and it was a rowdy, rockin show! 👍

@@jonblackers4339 - I don’t remember the guys name but they had a guitar player with them who had been in the Pat Travers band. They did a few of Pat’s songs, Too Rolling Stoned etc. Ann did a really nice job on Aretha’s tune Ain’t No Way, unexpected but I enjoyed it. She may sing better now than she ever has.
I was driving home from work this morning, and a local dj played a rendition of Blue Christmas. I'm thinking, I know that voice. The more I listened, the more it became clear. It was Ann Wilson. What a voice. Blew me away.
I’ve loved all phases of Heart. Ann could have went solo many times but didn’t. Heart is Ann and Nancy for me. Purists always have problem with change no matter what the genre. If bands never went through changes we would have missed out on some of the greatest albums. 🤷♀️
I can't say I am a purist as I am retro-discovering their old stuff just now. The band wasn't that big here in Europe, so mainly their commercial 80s stuff is known to broad audiences. All that being said, I was wondering why those first records are so terrific, but then a decline in song quality from my pov. I am finding out now about those lineup changes and struggles. I have to say that first albums contain superb songs that blew me away (how did I miss that before??). Classic lineup made awesome albums.
Ann and Nancy each excel in what they do but by themselves are not Heart. "Heart" ceased to exist a long time ago.
Ann did a few solo songs and a duet with Mike Reno for movie soundtracks. She also released a solo album. Nancy released a couple of solo albums. The first one was live. ‘All For Love’ was a solo song she did for the ‘Say Anything’ movie soundtrack. Nancy does a music video for the song too.
The original lineup for Heart was the best. Their undoing came as a result of them dating each other. When the relationships broke up, members started leaving the band. Like I said before, if Ann were more secure with herself, she would have let the band in her heart. I have to say, they were tight professionally. They sounded better live. Ann is one of the best rock singers out there, male or female. I love watching their 70's stuff. Ann was really sexy back then.
I agree that their ‘70s stuff was the best. Even though they had huge success in the ‘80, I have always fet that there wasn’t as much fire in their music after Roger Fisher and Mike Desrosiers left the band. I lost interest in the band after that.
I just turned 73 and I was a long haired musician myself back in the day, I saw "Spirit" in concert at least 3 times including the "Texas International Pop Festival" on Labor Day weekend 1969. Starting in 1968 and I can say without a doubt, they were one of the best live rock and roll bands I ever witnessed and I've seen everybody from Jimi Hendrix - 3 times to Led Zeppelin - 5 times and everybody in-between. Anyways, I always thought that Spirit was more than good enough to be a super group but for some reason it just didn't happen. True Story, back in late 68 or early 69, Spirit played in Fort Worth, Texas in Concert and later that night they actually showed up and played a few songs at a local night club called the "Circus Club", it was a local teenage rock and roll club. That's when I met Mark and the others in the Band and all I can add is that it's was a really great night and a best memory that I will never forget. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Randy was the negative element to Spirit that kept them from more greatness. Randy had a perfect opportunity to show a moment of respect to others with me and passed. Thankfully his step dad stepped in as he had to do many times for Randy and made the moment positive. The Commander Cassidy saved the day.

@@jackzeldon2883 These guys didn't luck into playing with Ann and Nancy. They didn't join the Ann and Nancy Wilson band. Steve Fossen and Roger Fisher founded a band that added Ann later and became Heart. But Ann paid them back by taking a hand in firing both of them a few years later.

Mike Derosier's analysis of Ann is right on. I always felt like it was Ann Wilson first, then Nancy and then the rest of them, not a complete band. It came through that way in the music and album art work and live in concert. It wasn't hard to see even as a teenager growing up in the late 70s

I continue to like their first album which is great. I grew up in Kirkland, one city down from Bellevue, where the Wilson's grew up.
I remember seeing Fischer's post-Heart band, Ten Bulls, before a crowd of five at the Sittin' Bull Pub at "Totem Lake Shopping Center," in the 80's, etc. In other words, the truth about the band was easily available to those from the area.
And the truth is that much of the B.S. that Anne said in the 70's, she says today, as does Nancy. Today, Ann talks of the terrible treatment she received decades ago. Back then - seldom a whisper or hint of a complaint. With hindsight, oh yeah - she's got an endless list of complaints. Many of the things that she complains about are things without which, she would never have succeeded. That dynamic messes with her.
I enjoyed the Wilson's audiobook biography and yeah, poor Ann went through a lot as a kid. As do we all. There are also a lot of lies in the book. She claims she was an introverted teenager. Trouble is, she told the Seattle Times back in the seventies, the guys she hung out with as a teen were a "punks, almost thugs, but they were the only ones that were really alive." There's a weird pattern from Ann in particular of literally being angry with the past. So, she re-invents the past. (Most hilarious of all is when the sisters routinely claimed they were Canadians.)
The simple truth is that Heart ran out of great songs pretty quickly. We're talking a band that honed their craft in weird Bellevue churches and keggars. It took them literally years to get good enough to make the first LP. I think Magazine would have been a second great album but yeah, Mushroom Record's greed, shattered the band forever.
Without great songs, they've sort of been a greatest hits band ever since with reference to their early success in the 70's. The 80's was largely the work of outside writers.

Ann and Nancy are incredibly talented, wonderful human beings who happen to be flawed, like all people are. But overall, they are good people and certainly much nicer and more genuine than most rockstars
I can tell you as a long time musician- some of the nicest people you'd have for friends are not folks that are fun to be in a band with. Bands create dynamics more like business than that of a friendship. There are people i have played with that I love tio hang with yet I hated playing with them
In his book, Lou Gramm discussed when Foreigner toured with Heart in 1979. He said the guys were really nice, but Ann and Nancy were standoff-ish. However, he also said that might have been because Double Vision was selling so well that some venues flipped the bill, making Foreigner the headliner instead of the opening act.

Fan of Heart, saw Heart in concert in the 70's and still love their music. I don't know what all the surprise is about Ann and or Nancy thinking she was the tops. Here we have 2 sisters with amazing talent, Ann singing lead 98% of the time, both sisters Alpha females for sure with Ann being more so than her sister. Heck, this kind of stuff happened all through music history as we see have seen great bands break apart because maybe just one member wanted to their own thing or sometimes a member pushes another member/members away due to their intense nature. Hey, musicians are artists and as such, have some weird and far out behavior. I know, I play drums and their is nothing too normal with me!!!! Just saying! I do like the interviews though.
"Alpha Females" - get real! Watch the short video of Ann crying in the studio in the mid-80s because she either got dumped by some quickie guy or some other drama happened. She's a basket case in that video. The sisters had their best success when they were directed (aka LED) by strong males like the Fishers in the 70s and Capitol executives in the 1980s. Since then, they haven't done much.
Seems it was hardest on Roger Fisher and his career. Thats no reflection on the tremendous talent elsewhere in the band only that Master Guitarists often can branch out much easier than Bass players or Drummers and the like. Still to this day I haven't heard any axman ever even get near the musical corner Roger worked. He was tremendous. I can go down to the local guitar bar and hear talent ooze. But Rogers input to that band was clearly in a class by itself...
Derosier has said that Roger has something special with the way he plays. I'd agree. His playing touched me at a young age, when I first heard the Magic Man extended solo.

I worked for a booking agency in Seattle back in the day. One of the better groups we had was named "Whiteheart", a solid rock'n'roll band. They moved to Vancouver and latter added Nancy and then Ann. The sisters were added to the band, they did not start it and hire the players.

I completely agree. He played very complicated and hard pounding rhythms that were integral to the Heart sound. Skilled musicians like that don't come around that often. All the musicians in that band, including Nancy, were exceptional.
In my opinion, he was good - not Bonham good though! It's a bit of a stretch. Bonham had his own style. Much like dude from Rush. You can hear them play and identify them as if hearing their vocals but not Michael. Good but typical - you play in a rock band good.

I just saw Heart on New Years Eve with the band that Ann did her latest solo record with. They were fantastic. Ann at 73 can still belt it. She’s a living legend.

Heart came to kamloops bc, canada years ago. Definately no l.a. Or toronto and yet they played like they were playing for the pope and they gave us multiple encors. They put on a show that left me /us feeling in total awe of professionals. They survived decade after decade to do what they do. After many bands or singers packed it in. Very blessed to have seen them
Live and made the concert an event that even today when i see heart i have to stop drop roll and remember thinking how many men or male bands can even hold a candle to them? When they pulled off stairway to heavan - i got teary and find it so emotional to watch the pros deliver art music and professionalism in the music industry.

Steve Fossen and Mike Derosier’s band, Heart by Heart, played my little town a few years ago. I’ve been big fan of Heart since Little Queen so I was stoked. They crushed it and sounded absolutely great. I so wish they would come back to my region so I could see them again.

As far as I’m concerned, these guys are the heart of Heart.
As someone who also has spent many years in a successful rock band, with both make and female members…it is a tougher “go” than a band with all one gender. Ultimately, romances happen and end, which effect things, even more than the normal personality conflicts. Heart has survived despite this…largely as a “band”…or at least the early version and then the 80s version, during it primary “hits” years. It takes a special male personality to be able to work with women players long-term.

Michael used to come to our gigs when we played in North Seattle. My snare head was worn out one night so I swapped it out and asked him to sign it. He did and I still have it and it has a permanent spot on my glory wall. We talked a lot about Heart and everything he said here is exactly what he said back then. Michael, if you're reading this, I'm sure you don't remember me but maybe Chrissy and playing at the club Christie's in Fife for her album. I was the drummer. You're the nicest and most humble drummer I've ever met. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. I still have the photo of you, me and Steve. I'll never forget those times. You are a legend.

Midnight Special did so much for getting bands out to the entire country. I still remember their appearance, that helped a person identify with a performer or band when they were on the radio

Saw Mark Andes play with Spirit at Ebbet’s Field in Denver and then with Firefall in Boulder at I think Tulagis. Then at Folsom Field in Boulder with Heart. Iconic rock figure.

Wow, thanks for posting those interviews with the guys! I've always wanted to hear something (anything) from the band members of those two eras of Heart. We always got to hear from Ann and Nancy but those guys were really the backbone (or, ahem, heart) of Heart. Mark Andes in particular----I saw Heart twice during his tenure with them and I was constantly watching him and the others because I, too, thought of Heart as a "band." All of the guys were fantastic and I've often wondered what happened that Heart was constantly changing lineups it seemed. This is the first I've really heard about Ann not really being into the band structure of playing, and wanting to be her own star.. If she felt that way, she should have just been solo from the beginning, but from what I understand she and Nancy came into an original lineup that didn't have women in the band, so maybe they got used to playing with others. It's sad to hear about Ann having an ego like that. She can still wail like nobody's business but when you treat people as being less than you, what's the use?

They are both bitter old women , They couldn't stand all of their hits in the 80s that made them tons of money because those two deluded themselves that they were Led Zeppelin . And they treated the band members like nothing but hired chumps but they got their way and now haven't had a hit since the early 90s .
Musicians downfall is their ego, no matter what level. But it is in their prerogative to leave the band because they feel not respected for their world class gift. . My opinion is If you find yourself w talent and package such as the Wilson sisters, if you want to have a dream career, play second fiddle.
I saw the band when they were called White Hart at inglemore high school in Kenmore wash in the early1970 they played alot of covers I partyed at one of their houses in Kirkland that had a slide from the upstairs bedroom deck to the pool that was in the late 70s then in the late 90s I lived in Woodinville next to the Wilson's horse Ranch I couldn't believe how the sisters treated the guys after they parted ways Mike Drosher is a friend and fellow drummer buddie ,Roger Fisher had a ego problem back in the day he didn't like the playing under the sisters he wanted to be the star so the guys try ten bulls that flopped it's a hard life in that business I've been playing for 55 years n haven't made squat for money playing music I sell instraments and repair them but still play n sing in a band
I lived directly across the street from the Wilson's big white house in Woodinville from '84 to '86...
I grew up in the Edmonds area and went to Mountlake Terrace HS so we were from the same general area.. (I think Mike D went to Woodway HS)
This is great. DeRosier was a monster on those early Heart records and Mike Flicker deserves a medal for how well he recorded not just the songs, but those drums in particular. Some of the best rock records ever made still lacked a decent drum mix, but that was obviously one of Flicker's strengths.
Perhaps the greatest female lead rock singer ever.

Getting pieces of the same puzzle from different perspectives - but dovetailing in a way that the consistencies jumped out. Great band but obvious (like many others) control and creative direction always prove to be difficult obstacles. Great job. Looking forward to more of these!
Heart is Ann and Nancy Wilson. Everyone else is support for those 2.
??? Ann was ...is a Diva, main song writer, and her talent was was front and center. They also persevered beyond the original band to create more hits. She was the "frontman" of Heart. Hate to say it, but it was her show. ....And, her show is still going. One could argue that the "rock band culture" had a male bias. As far as financial stuff goes, sounds like it was fair. But, these guys were following Ann's lead because it was financially beneficial. Ann's talent carries her with any good band.
When I was in the park service coming from St. Helens, and Cle Elm Ranger station. We who stop at the truck stop in of their house and clean up and eat. Dog and Butterfly is my favorite song.
Let me interject. As someone who was a part of the "Seattle Scene", I was offered a bass audition with Randy Hansen, played with Wells and Arrington of Metal Church, and have access to Floyd Rose's steel billet prototype,... MD was a TOTAL PRICK to me when I was invited to Heart interview at KJR in Seattle at their last performance on their Bébé le Strange Tour. I remember you Mike! AH!

They had the Speedway Jam in Toledo, Ohio after they released "Little Queen". I heard "love alive" during that tour and kind of let it slip way back into my memories. About 2009 I heard it again and it was like instant transport to that concert back in 1980. They were still pounding it out. It was great.
Imho Heart stopped being Heart and started being a corporate hit 💔 machine after the former members ceased as members of Heart. Roger Fischer, Michael Derossier and Steve Fossen were what made the original sound that attracted me to Heart. They had 3 distinct phases to my way of thinking. The original Heart then the Corporate phase where it was just about making hits and ceased being a cohesive band. Then it was Anne and Nancy Wilson and a few side men.

Just saw, HEART at the Acrisure arena in Palm Desert 12-28-23 & it was so AWESOME! Anne and Nancy are really a major part of Heart even if that wasn't how it started back in the 70's!

Ann Wilson is one of the top 4 or 5 female singers of the rock era. Full stop.
And what did she get for her trouble? Record company lackies dogging her for years about her weight, so when this guy talks about insecurity, grain of salt.
If this were a temperamental male front man we were talking about here, they’d chalk it up to eccentricity.

I knew Anne when she and I went to Bellevue Community College in 1969-70. we took music classes and hung out with a "music" crowd. she was a very nice young lady. I left Seattle and I was kind of shocked when they hit it big years later.
