Be sure to check out the studio recording; Ann’s vocals are even more impressive there. It’s hard to imagine that you never heard this before. Growing up, I had no choice but to hear it played countless times on the radio, first on album orientated rock (AOR) stations, and later on oldies stations.

Seen her sing this 3 nights ago as an opening song, and I can’t get over how well she sounded during that concert. Even today, she is killing it.

I agree, this is not the performance by which to evaluate Anne's voice. She is far more powerful that this breathy example. IMO the best female rock vocalist ever.
The album version is nothing short of a revolution in rock music and in powerful female vocals. This live performance is just not full-strength. Still good, but it's kind of like if DaVinci painted the Mona Lisa and it was incredible, and then he made a stencil for it and spray-painted monalisas on walls all over the world that were "still good, but missing something".
As long as a full live show was, she paced herself -- she wouldn't risk not being able to hit the higher notes in songs near the end of the show. Vocal self-preservation.

My days as a young teen in the 70's were awesome. No cable TV. No internet. No social media. Just great times. Great music.

I think Roger Fisher is a fantastic guitar player and really doesn't get mentioned that often with being overshadowed by Ann and Nancy's greatness.

Probably my favorite singer ever & I got to see her live. Life was complete.
It's 2 notes. It's a G5 and an F5 for the verses. G5 is played ba ba, ba ba ba, ba ba ba and F5 is played ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba and it repeats. Most people don't know that I play the guitar and my wife sings, and this is the song I pick to surprise people when they are visiting my house. My wife hits Ann Wilson stuff with ease because she's a soprano. She actually has to sing lower to hit Ann's notes. So, what usually happens is somebody comes over and they see one of my guitars and they say, "Oh, you play the guitar?" Then, I'll pick it up and start playing Magic Man. That alone surprises them, which isn't really saying much because it's just G5 / F5, but when my wife hears it, she comes into the room and starts singing and it's just spot on. They are just blown away because it's so good and so unexpected. The first time I ever hung out with my wife, she invited me over her house for her band's practice. She threw a party around Christmas time and I invited some friends over. My neighbor (now wife) had her band there and set up for the party, so they played for everybody and it was like an open mic where anybody could sing. At one point, my wife was singing and my friend's wife was blown away by her. She says to me, "You better marry her... or I will."
When you have the brilliance of Ann Wilson, Kate Bush and Ronnie James Dio on this lovely channel together with the natural and heartfelt reaction and analysis of Elizabeth, you needn't go elsewhere. Just terrific 👍 👌 👏

But there is a massive hole from the European front and that she does not have or does not have much of any reaction content on WITHIN TEMPTATION, with great natural vocalist, Sharon den Adel !!!! Where they have evolved with many variant styles and ballad as well as high energy Symphonic metal.
There are many other excellent singers each to own music

Yea I think I can argue that first Ann Wilson was NOT a metal singer she was a Rock singer and while Ann Wilson is good she doesn't come close to Linda Ronstadt.

Led Zeppelin were HUGELY influential on Heart, and Ann's vocal interplay with her guitarists comes from the kind of interplay Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were doing live in Led Zeppelin in the 70s. It was common with virtuosic bands that could really jam on stage. Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore did a lot of it, too.

Not only that, the final solo is very much in the style of Page. Ann/Heart never made a secret of their love for Zep.
That makes sense as they made living initially as a Led Zep cover band. A great way to train your voice!

@@fw1421 To this point, check out Heart covering Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center in front of Robert Plant, JPJ, and Jimmy Page. I almost sense RP is skeptical at first but that gives way to raw emotion and deep appreciation of the tribute. I would say that her voice is better than ever. Still gives me goosebumps.

That song takes me back to a very interesting time in my young life. I had my first serious bf, and of course I thought he was a Magic Man. He ended up breaking up with me 😂 but later said it was the dumbest thing he ever did & he regretted it. He broke my heart at the time so there was no going back. But this song was always on the radio and it just takes me right back to the early 80's. I would go back just for the great music we had, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, AC⚡️ DC, Foreigner, etc. What a time to be alive, i think that was the best time, musically. ❤
Speech Language Pathologist here. I just love listening to you talk! So much range just in your speaking voice! Bet your singing is amazing. Gotta say, I love seeing younger people react to “my” old folks music. But I hate that you aren’t hearing the versions we grew up with. Please be sure to check out the recorded versions which include much more exciting vocal elements than can be found in the live versions!
At 14:29, you talked about how Ms Wilson is not thinking through all the choices she's making to create the sound of the song, that it is much more emotionally driven, and I would definitely agree. What I think is going on here is that Anne has mastered the craft of singing to such a degree that she uses muscle memory to add the effects she wants without having to "re-invent the wheel," so to speak. She is able to create the "emotional texture" of the piece she's singing without having to cognitively consider all the possible choices, because she can visualize what she wants to emote and she has the tool in her toolbox and immediately available so that she can pull it out without a lot of thought. It's the hallmark of someone who has practiced her craft to highest proficiency.
Ann Wilson is the finest female rock vocalist in history. She has the whole package with incredible range, control, and dynamics. And she makes it look effortless, you can tell she's just phoning that performance in while making it look and sound amazing. Still great even today.
If you only react to one more Heart song, it absolutely MUST be “Crazy On You” the live 1978 version. It is the whole package!! Ann and Nancy are so beautiful and ridiculously talented. Ann’s vocals are INCREDIBLE and Nancy’s guitar playing is SO COOL. There’s also a great theatrical quality at the climax of the song. The whole stage gets “crazy”. The version I’m copying has some wonderful back stage stuff at the first 3 minutes. I would leave that in but if you don’t, I would still use this version. Ann Wilson is one of the best Rock Vocalists of all time. Often imitated yet never equaled. She helped to pave the way for other female lead vocalists over the years like Lzzy Hale, Dorothy, Taylor Momsen, and Amy Lee to name a few. A true pioneer in Rock music.
Not often you get to hear Nancy sing, Anne is such a force, but you might not know, the sisters put out a duet, the title track of their album, "Dog and Butterfly", for something that show cases Heart's more quiet side. "Dreamboat Annie" is another favorite from back in the day...

I went to see Heart every time they came to Houston. They did not disappoint.
In addition to being 1 of THE best vocalists of the last 5 decades, she's also a master at mic handling. Back then, most louder rock bands used Shure SM57's to help tame bleed and feedback, she "plays" that mic. She plays with angle and distance, and understands perfectly where that low/mid "proximity effect" bump is that's inherent to those beasts. 57/58's are still used more than any other mics out there. Cool thing is that the first ones I ever bought back in 79 were $100 each, and the last ones I bought 2 months ago were $100 each! You don't get the cool molded plastic cases with them anymore, but can't beat they haven't gone up in over 40 years.
Ann and Pat Benatar are my two favorite female rock vocalists of all time. They're both so incredible, and both so beautiful. You should react to Pat Benatar Promises in the Dark. So amazing. I love your reactions. Thank you for reacting to so many songs from my youth. Brings me right back there. Back to Ann and company and the rest of the song.

I've heard this song for decades, but this is the first time I've seen this particular live performance. Some people go to a concert wanting to hear the songs exactly as they know them from the album. (Not me.) Ann changes up her vocals to keep things from getting stagnant. Other times she uses her stronger voice on some of the parts that were a bit lighter and more "innocent" in this performance. Some of the spoken lines from this performance are sung during others performances. The studio recording that we grew up listening to on the radio is distinct as well. For me, live performances should be personalized for the audience, the performer's specific mood or frame of mind at the moment and to keep the song fresh both for the audience and so the performer doesn't get bored with the duplication and repetition. Going to a live show SHOULD be unique, otherwise I could just play the album at home if I wanted to hear the song done the same way every time. (To see another, softer side of Heart, check out "Dog and Butterfly" if you get an opportunity.)

A truly perfect rock and roll song. Start to finish, it has it all. Ann and Nancy are both next-level talented and the band are just plain polished professionals with clean live production. Just like their studio stuff. I was looking forward to seeing your take and appreciation of it. You clearly dug it as much as I do. One of the best bands ever. Noice!!
I would definitely recommend These Dreams to take a look at Nancy Wilson's vocals. She normally doesn't really sing, but she sure is great when she does.
The live version from the 2002 concert in Seattle is an excellent performance.

If you can find the live version of "Mistral Wind"( an older version)absolutely amazing.
I have yet to find a good live version of Mistral Wind that has both good audio and video. If anyone can point Elizabeth (and me) in the right direction that would be outstanding. In the mean time, I can always recommend E react to the album version from Dog And Butterfly. It is one of their finest recordings, hands down.

Personally I think the absolute best version of Mistral Wind is from the 2003 DVD Alive In Seattle. Vocally, musically, and production-wise, it's killer. That version is what really made me a fan of the song more than I ever was before.

The guitar riff at the beginning of this song always gives me chills. Always.
She’s definitely one of my favorite singers of any genre. I was pretty young when this stuff came out so I never appreciated how good she really was until later. I saw a special where Heart had a bunch of famous artists join them doing Heart songs and to me it just showcased how much better she is than all that joined them.
One of the guitarists, the one that switches to synth, is Howard Leese. Great musician, in every measure. He's also played for Bad Company. I've conversed with him on the internet, and know a few people that are his in-person friends, and he seems to be a really great guy.
Yes, Howard and Roger Fisher were a great combo. This line-up of Heart was the best imho. The drummer, everyone just was great and they were so creative together 😊

I was fortunate enough to see Heart perform a dozen times in the ‘70’s when they were touring in support of their first two albums Dreamboat Annie and Little Queen. It was a great time.
I know we're here for the vocals but can we take a moment to talk about the guitar? Well just the entire band! They are am amazing unit.
Yes! I have always felt like the lead guitarist is extremely under rated.
And yet Ann and Nancy fired them all, and they used the bogus excuse that they were not even average musicians. That is when Heart died to me. Seeing how many times Ann and Nancy have had their own feuds, it made sense they would use such crap.
@@toddstevens13 have you heard Heart by Heart yet it’s two of the founding members Steve Fossen (bass)and Michael Derosier (drum) they are a really good band.
I have always liked Michael Derosier's drumming in this band. It's sad that most people forget all about him when discussing great drummers heard on 1970's era radio.

Fun trivia point: the Telecaster (actually a Fender Esquire modified to add the neck pickup) used here was bought from the guitarist in Steppenwolf, and was used on hits like “Born To Be Wild”, Magic Carpet Ride”, and more.

Both “Magic Man” and “Crazy On You” were off Heart’s 1975 debut album “Dreamboat Annie”.
In 1970 Anne Wilson followed her boyfriend Mike Fisher (manager, sound engineer, and brother of Heart guitarist Rodger Fisher) to Canada to avoid the Vietnam War draft. The band followed. They toured extensively in Canada and became a hit there.
They recorded Dreamboat Annie in Vancouver. It was released in September 1975 in Canada and had two songs (Magic Man and Crazy On You) chart in Canada before the album was released in the USA five months later on February. 14, 1976. It is safe to say that their success in Canada contributed greatly to helping them become the superstars they are today.

Would love to see you react to "Straight On"...maybe a version of the song from 10-15 yrs ago. Long after it was first released, but would like your comments on Ann's vocals today, after singing for decades. What I like the most about "Straight On" is the harminizing between the sisters. I have always said that my fav part of a Heart show is during this song, when Nancy REALLY comes in and harmonizes with Ann...Their voices are magical, live. I have been a fan ever since I can remember. I have never been as taken with an artist or group as I was a few decades ago when I attended my first Heart show. Watching Ann sing live is pure magic. I'm commenting before you release the video, but When I saw this pop up, I got so excited. I love when people are introduced to artists that mean so much to me. I raised my daughter on their music, and we have been to several shows together. I was never so proud of her as when, after a show in Pitts, PA, she put on FB "Ann and Nancy Wilson are pure musical goddesses"....a friend replied "Who?" She then flooded his page with so many videos of Heart. Her friend had head their songs, and was probably saying that as a joke, but she was determened that he be schooled in all things Heart. Another song that is amazing live is "Mistrail Wind" and being a HUGE Heart fan I recommend the version from the Night At Sky Church version. While there is a version that is AMAZING with them backed by a symphony, but, I think some of the focus is taken away from Nancy's incredable acoustic guitar playing. I could talk about the Wilson sisters for days, but really, I just wanted to thank you for putting them on your react list. When I first watch you react to Ann singing "Stairway to Heaven"...it made me cry. You finding a love for something I, and so many, love, is beautiful, and I am so enjoying your videos because you are exposing me to music I would not have heard, otherwise. Music is pure magic...When you find artist who play or sing from their soul, there is nothing like it.

At the end Ann & Nancy's voices give me chills. The way they blend and separate, almost like the movement felt in a chorus effect...

Seriously. I’m telling anyone unfamiliar with Heart’s live cover of Led Zeppelin’s song “The Battle of Evermore” from their Alive in Seattle set to go and watch it. I’m a lifetime fan of both groups and the performance is an incredible display of singing and harmony by both Anne AND Nancy while Anne plays acoustic guitar and Nancy plays the mandolin. I really want at least one of my favorite reactors to check it out, but it’s worth being dissected and analyzed so I feel this is the ideal channel. I promise it’s worth the time. Cheers!

The thing she shares with Floor, that raises them so far up above many singers is their pure ability to storytell. Superb voices with the ability to shift back and forwards in tone and timbre to enhance the story.

Would like to see a bit of a discussion of the whole Dreamboat Annie album. Few albums are so well put together from beginning to end. Just a fantastic piece of work.

The last portion of Magic Man is much more powerful in the studio recording. Ann completely kills it and its a thing of glory.
Vocals great, obviously, but the whole band was very talented. The lead-guitar work is incredible, and Ann's sister, Nancy, is right there. To me, that's a true sign of a great singer, when they can improvise so smoothly and the way they sing the verses is never exactly the same twice in a row.

Ann is smoky and clear at the same time; rock and classic at the same time. Where have you been all your life if you have not heard of Heart?? She is the female singers singer
1:50 - Ann's ability to hit the exact note she's aiming for is what makes her one of the best singers in rock history. Between that and her incredible range is what makes her one of the best singers in rock history, if you ask me.
I'm fairly certain that when she sings, "... he's a magic man, mamma!" I thing she means it as being completely smitten for this man, not really in a "snarky" type way.
In the VH1 Behind the Music on Heart, she goes on to explain that she was away from home for the first time, trying to get this band going and met this blue eyed man, described in this song and how this was her first true love, etc.

Roger Fisher was very underrated as a guitarist imho. Him and Howard Leese helped make Heart the great band they were. In my humble opinion, this was their best line-up by far. Very talented, creative, passionate and they made great songs.

The entire album Dreamboat Annie is a wonderful masterpiece. Probably my all time favorite album, ever, which is odd because Heart doesn't even make it into my top 25 favorite artists or bands.
Probably my favorite Heart song, "Barracuda" a very close 2nd. Ever since I first heard them, Ann and Nancy have been in my heart. (Get it??? LOL) Just wish I could have seen them live back in the '70s and '80s. Even though they have re-invented themselves over the years, this is what I first think of them, classic.

Ann is one of the best ever.There are a few on my list but I can't choose who is no.1.But she is on the top level.Still packs a heavy punch. Some have angel voices but she is a freight train there is just so much power in reserv.And when she taps in on that power it's just heaven.If I ever met her I would piss her off so that she would scream the hell out of me.And me so happy.
