I’ve just spent the whole day sending out cover letters and receiving rejection emails, so this was a much needed little mood booster 😪 I’ve been trying to get into publishing for almost a year now, and i’ve never even gotten to interview stage! Thanks for this. Working on a career transition after finishing grad school last May, and I wound up getting a marketing job in a different industry last summer. Had several interviews for publishing jobs, but no offers, so I switched gears because I felt like at least getting some editorial experience would be helpful in the long run. I'm going through another round of applications for publishing jobs now. It's encouraging to hear that sticking to it paid off!

@@APleasantDaydream hi! I'm so glad that your major was English Literature because 8 months in, I'm also pursuing a BA in English! The backlash I mentioned is predominantly because of the lack of job opportunities, and the seemingly difficult curriculum.

@@afraankhan20 nice! Welcome to the club :D And that makes sense. I think it can be hard to find jobs as an English major if you don’t know how to market yourself well. That’s a struggle I’m having right now as I’m job searching. But many of my former classmates haven’t had any trouble with that, and I’ve found that many employers who are looking for journalism or communications majors will also accept English majors. It might be good to take a couple of professional writing classes to learn skills like copyediting, copywriting, and SEO because a lot of employers are looking for people with those skills. Also, if you can, try to find opportunities to gain experience before you graduate. I worked as a copy editor for my university’s newspaper for two years and did a professional writing internship on campus for one semester. In my opinion, the curriculum isn’t too hard if you enjoy and are skilled at analyzing and writing about books. Good luck with your studies, and I hope you enjoy being an English major!
