For anyone who is still interested in the ‘How To Get Into Editorial’ course, I’m running it again in April 2024: www.badformreview.com/shop/p/how-to-get-into-editorial-course
This was so useful! Currently applying for a bunch of editorial jobs and getting an inside look at what the day is actually like is great at demystifying it all! Like, I know, internally, that this isn’t some crazy hidden set of skills that are impossible to learn, but it’s so nice to actually see that. Publishing houses often feel like these vast, unknowable things where you’re not really sure what happens on the inside, but submissions go in, and books come out the other end. It’s comforting to know that it’s just people, working with each other to make those books as good as they can! Thank you so much ☺️
I have been searching EVERYWHERE for a video like this -- thank you so much! Hoping to get a job as an editorial assistant when I graduate next year, fingers crossed!!! Subscribed, would love to see more videos like this!
This was so so so so interesting. I'd love to see more. I'm an aspiring fiction writer, so it is so interesting to see everything else that is needed to get a book out there. So so so so interesting.
Just stumbled across this after I've been watching some of Ain Chiara's videos and just wanted to say thank you so much for filming this! I'm hoping to get into publishing after doing a bit of work experience at PRH and found this vid lovely, relaxing and just a pleasure to watch! x
I really enjoyed hearing about what you do! I work as a Digital Editor at a small ELT publisher and it's really interesting to compare the differences! Would love to see more videos like this where you talk about the variety of tasks you do :D
This was great to watch! It'd be useful to know how you get picture permissions for books and could you possibly share your journey into the publishing industry? Thanks!!
This was so useful! I'm very interested in getting into the industry (coming from the TV/Film industry as an executive assistant). Good to know there is some transferrable skills. I'm wanting to know more about your write-ups/reports when you are requested to read a submission. I know you said you include whether or not you like the book, but how detailed do you have to be?
Hello! I’ve had a few questions on this so I’m going to try and make a quick video - but to summarise, it depends on the editor, and the more confidence they have in you, the less detail you have to give!
I came for the insight on being an editorial assistant, but I stayed because of this lovely sunshine smile lady here, jeez I'm so heart eyes for her~~~
This video was very useful. This seems to be a typical 9-5 with some overtime. I’m a junior in college right now, wanting to get into publishing, and one of my main concerns is just that time to yourself to still enjoy things like watching tv shows, reading other stuff than what you have to, and just the usual stuff.
Thank you for this video! I'm looking to do a rotational program in publishing after graduation and this was really helpful to see how this would look whilst working online!
Thank you so much for posting this- it is a huge help in demystifying the goals and tasks an editorial assistant takes on in their day to day! I heard you mention the challenge of working with bookstores in the pandemic ; I was wondering if you would find it worth it to discuss how editorial has remained the same from the pandemic until now and how it has changed from the pandemic until now and if you do think this is an important question to discuss, would you make a video on it?
thanks for this great video, i only hope you tweaked your sound mixer a bit though, there are moments when your voice is very low and hard to hear, and yet the next second the background music is crazy loud. having to constantly adjust my volume is not fun...
This video was so helpful, and fun to watch! Thank you! May I ask-you mentioned organizing courier as one of your tasks; would you be willing to shed a little light on what that process entails? I’m not entirely familiar with the term. (I am in the United States, so my apologies if it’s a well-known term in the UK!)
Hi Yuki, I believe she is only referring to shipping books or other materials. Maybe even larger shipments of books to stores? I would be interested to learn more about that process as well.
Sorry for a slow response! I’m going to do a quick vid on this because I’ve had a few questions about it - but ultimately I’d say trust your gut, and the more you read, the better you’ll get!
I have written ten sci fi fictions. How can I get a platform to publish these manuscripts through Penguin Random House? In 2014, Penguin published an anthology of true life stories titled 'Something Happened On The Way To Heaven 'edited by Sudha Murty. The 11th no story is written by me.
Hi! I'm applying to jobs as an editorial assistant but so far I've not had much luck. If you could cover your journey and how people got into publishing, please let me know.
Hi :) I loved you video, also I wanted to say I have the same washing basket! I aiming to get into publishing, so this video helped show what kind of things you do as a part of your role. Have you thought about making videos on the image submissions that I think you mentioned?
how much reading of manuscripts do you actually do compared to other tasks?? and are you always expected to read after work or can you read during the day?
Hi, I liked your video and the detail of your day you tried to provide. Definitely insightful. I am currently pursuing my Masters and I am looking to study a publishing course then apply to the big 5 publishing companies. How would you suggest is the best way to start working in the editorial department without providing experience? Should I apply for an internship in the company first or entry level job? Also, does Penguin have a lot of diversity? By this I mean, are there people working in the US office from India? Would be helpful if you or anyone else could provide insights.
I originally came here to see what its like to be and editor so that i could have a peek of what it is like if i want to take it up as a job for my college if i choose arts. Although i didnt understand a lot of it, it looks like something id enjoy since i love reading umm if u dont mind can u share a it more about this career i want to learn more about it- thankyou!
Hey, I have a graduate and master's degree in English literature from India. I'm trying to break into the publishing industry but can't seem to find any editing internships. Can you please assist me with that? I can't seem to find internships for editing. Please help me with that if possible.
Thank you so much! You're right: there are so few videos about this kind of thing. I'd love to know, do you live in London, and if so did you move there or already live there and how difficult was getting a place in London if you did move? Just because I know most Penguin jobs are based in London right?
@@user-yi9zf6ke6o Ah depends on the job! For my traineeship, there were scheduled dates. For editorial assistant roles, it was usually within a fortnight. I think Penguin’s pretty good at responding swiftly usually, but there are some firms I’ve still not heard back from since January! You have to remember that the average entry level job at penguin has 700 applicants so a lot to get through :)
If my text reached to you. I just wane to say that I have done EA and master copy both. Can I get a chance to work with you. Or work with you as freelance job. Plz respond
Hey, this was really helpful. I'm aspiring to get into editorial as well and i wanted to know how long does penguin take to get back to you after you do your test? Also you're amazing. Thanks for existing 🤍🌸

I loved this video!
Came here as a new editorial assistant at PRH Canada :') can we be friends

I would love to know how your application/ interview process went for this role I've recently applied to Penguin and haven't heard as of yet 😬
Will be making a video on this because it’s been asked a lot and seems quite a lot for a comment!!
