Nice video, Sanne! I'm also in the beginning of my publishing career, working as an international literary scout. Scouting might be a good area of publishing to cover in your future video, since few people understand it (I started without knowing basically anything, haha).
Hi Sanne, It would be interesting to hear your thoughts about accessibility and diversity in publishing. I'm sure you're aware there's been more talk not just about diverse books but also diversity on the publishing teams. The fact that most jobs are accumulated in just a few major cities and the internships usually aren't paid excludes so many talented young people for various reasons. How can the industry do better? Cheers!
Thank you SO much for filming this video! Incredibly inspiring since I'm finding myself in a situation similar to yours when you first moved to London. I'm currently in Haarlem, Netherlands, desperately trying to find a job so I can stay in this beautiful country. Hopefully it won't take me a year! Any tips are welcome!
Thank you so so much for doing this. I am 16 years old and I have this dream of starting my own publishing company but I was about to give up because I didn't find it as realistic but you just inspired me, so, thank you so much and please keep doing this.
As someone who is a publishing intern in NYC it is so interesting how different the London publishing internships are! Because here in NYC they are college semester long either Fall and Spring while you're taking classes or full/part time over the summer. That is so cool that you can do just a few weeks. It was great to hear your career history!
I get that they might've been worried about their employees splitting their interests or whatever, but..."too ambitious"?! That's such a terrible reason to turn someone down 😅 Thanks so much for sharing all of this! It was so fascinating to hear about your background and how you got into the industry :)
Publishers struggle to retain admin staff as often people believe it is the gateway to other areas of the business. In the last few years publishers have tried to avoid strong turnover in these roles by hiring strong admin staff and not people who are looking to shift to editorial/design etc.
Would love to see a video about applying for publishing jobs (resume and cover letter writing). Also a video about interviews and what questions you should ask at an interview. Thanks Sanne
I’ve just started a job as an editorial assistant on the Physics list at an academic publishing company, and this video was really interesting to see the difference between fiction and non-fiction publishing! The books I work on are usually for very niche markets (researchers, graduate students etc) so it’s interesting to learn about the emphasis placed on marketing and social media in fiction. If anyone is interested in how I got in to scientific/academic publishing... after I graduated with a physics degree, I worked as an administrator at a medical communication company and was involved in making recruitment materials for clinical trials. I really enjoyed that aspect of the job and thought that academic publishing or scientific journals would be a good fit for my next job. I applied to less than 10 jobs (but also looking back, should have applied for more!) and luckily landed the first job I interviewed at! It’s been a couple weeks, and I’m loving it so far. There’s lots of admin type tasks (sorting contracts, entering books in to databases) but it’s really rewarding to work with authors to help them write their book. It’s more of a passion project for them, rather than anything that’s going to make them huge amounts of money, so it’s lovely to be able to help them along the way!
Hi, This is Bill from Bill's book club. Will like to congratulate you for the Physics degree as a fellow Graduate in Professional studies. Through the early years working in Engineering never really liking to fix stuff so now I do editing for St. Pauls Church really learning a lot of format.
After months of applying for things, I’ve just started a part time internship at a small educational publisher in their digital department and am loving it! Excited to learn lots ☺️
This was a really nice background of your job, thanks for sharing! Definitely keen to hear more. It sounds like you work really hard, I'd love a video on how you manage your time and organise the balance between work and youtube!
This video was so incredibly helpful and the timing was just perfect! I just graduated with an English degree and I have only completed one internship in public relations and have no clue what career to pursue! I’m definitely going to check out your links!
This video arrives just in time as I am going to apply for a work placement at Penguin tomorrow! You're actually someone I really look up to in terms of your career, as I'm from a non-English speaking country as well and am hoping to work in international publishing once I've finished my degree. (Brexit is kind of a setback for that, but oh well.)
Thank you thank you thank you! I really enjoyed watching this video. As an English Major, the world of publishing is always an option/on the horizon I suppose. I've been considering it more and more recently because of you and Jen Campbell discussing the inner workings of publishing. I'd love to know more personal experiences and the pros and cons of publishing. I'm so excited for future videos on the subject!!
No problem! Much like Sanne, I got my start in both publishing and the museum field through internships and part-time positions that eventually became a full-time role at a museum. It can be tough to break in to industries like these, but my tip would be to be willing to hold any position you can find and to be confident and genuinely connect with people in the field so you can find that perfect role for you.
This video came at the perfect time for me. I’m currently struggling with what I want to do as a career and I’ve been leaning toward book publishing. I live in the states and am about to get married and then go back to school. Thank you for this video, it’s given me a good idea of the jobs that fall under the “publishing” umbrella. 😊
I'm an author illustrator and clicked on this on a whim as I have watched your graphic novel haul videos, this video was really unexpectedly interesting! I'm very glad for you and to hear your journey into publishing :) I cheered when you talked about your first role in Hot Key! It was also encouraging as I'm querying at the moment and I feel the same way finding my new "dream agent"
Very good Video, Sanne! I‘m currently working at PRH Germany in production. I also think the best way to get into Publishing is interning, interning, interning! Not only for the indistry to get to know you, but also for to discover if you really want to do this. Publishing is a very hard business, it‘s a small industry and the pressure is ON. So please evaluate early on if you are willing to compensate your small salary/ hard work with working around books. ( Personally I think it‘s worth it, but sometimes it can get frustrating)
This was such a helpful video - I'm moving to London next year, after I finish university, and starting in Journalism/Photography/Media. It's incredibly encouraging hearing about someone else's experience, because it's such a scary transition; and quite an unsteady period of time in our lives. Thank you!
I would LOVE a video or part of a video about tips to get into the industry. I want to get into the industry after university and that would be suuuuuuuper interesting! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, SANNE
This video was really interesting and I'm very excited for this serie, such a good idea! I always think there's not enough content about the publishing world and in general it's quite an unknown world so this is an amazing thing for books fanatics like me to get a glimpse of it :) I'm moving from France to London in April for a 5-month internship (nothing to do with publishing) but my plan is to stay a year and try to get a job/internship in publishing so I know whetever or not it is what I want to do! I was wondering if you would advice to send CVs + cover letter to publishing houses if they're looking for someone? xxx
As someone very drawn to the world of publishing, this type of content is SO useful. Thank you! Excited that you want to chat to people across departments - would love to see things for an editing point of view, as well as social media.
Thank you so much! I’m a journalism major right now considering a switch into publishing, and it’s hard to find someone speaking so openly and honestly about the business.
Yes yes yes!! ♥ Thank you Sanne, this is much appreciated! Working in publishing is my dream, so I can't wait for more videos about it! Now gonna make some tea, get a notepad & a pen, and watch the video haha
I can't wait to hear more about publishing! I am a high school senior, and not quite sure what I want with my life, but publishing sounds super fascinating! Thank you for sharing!
So excited about this new series of videos about publishing! Work in publishing myself, worked in the UK for a while, then had to move abroad, but hope to come back one day... So will keep my eyes peeled; thanks so much for making these!
Thank you so much for this video! I moved to London in September to do a Publishing MA and in November I got my first internship, which lasted 3 weeks. Now I’m back at sending CVs and cover letters (I have just applied for the work experience at Penguin!), which can be a bit demotivating sometimes so THANKS for this 💛
I would love to know what your career ambitions are - even if it's a bit vague and more about the areas you want to explore than specific roles you want to move into. I love hearing people talk about their career ambitions, I think it's really interesting and inspiring, and it's not something you hear about a lot from women who are employed rather than entrepreneurs.
Although you aren’t an editor, I wonder if you still might have some insight on what it takes to get those kinds of jobs in publishing. Really enjoyed this video :)
I really loved listening to your experience in the publishing world. I would love to see videos with your coworkers from different fields of the company such as sales, production, editing etc on their experience with their current job and their journey to get there. I also think it would be cool to see videos with your bosses or the head honchos of the company where they can give tips for being successful in this field. Working for Penguin is a job I will probably only be able to dream of but regardless I look forward to this series, Sanne!
Such a great video- thank you for it :D I'm currently doing an internship at a small publishinghouse for youth and childrens books in Germany and I'm really enjoying it so far :) really looking forward to what you are doing to share about the publishing world :)
This is such a helpful video! I'm thinking about getting into publishing after uni and I feel like your series will help me get an insight into the industry, so thank you so much for doing this :)
This is such a helpful video! Working in publishing is something I've definitely considered even though I am not going to major in English or even business, so it'll be interesting to find out how your colleagues ended up getting their jobs as well.
thank you so much! i was just accpeted to uni in groningen (i'm from germany though) for english lit and then i'll hopefully follow up my masters in book publishing and stuff that they offer there. working in publishing is my dream! and moving abroad is, too.
Thank you for this overview! Super interesting and helpful for us newbies coming into the industry. Can't wait to start my new job in publishing soon!!
Thank you for sharing! I realized my sophomore year of college that I wanted to work in publishing lol I literally forget it was an industry even though I’ve always been a bookworm 🤷🏾♀️.
i love videos (or any type of content) about careers and jobs, so this is great! i would really like to hear more about the process of applying to your first job. what were the things you feel like you did right and what are some things that now looking back you feel like you could have done differently (even tho everything worked out for the best)? and in future episodes with other people i would also be very interested in hearing about their first jobs in the field and how they got them. i feel like it is that first job that often opens up so many other opporturnities and it is that time before you get that job that feels the most terrifying. i'm graduating at the end of this year and the whole applying for internships/jobs seems absolutely terrifying, this type of content really helps sooth my anxiety :D.
Thank you Sanne, this really helps to get an idea of how things work after graduation ! I’m finishing my bachelor’s degree in June so in two years and a half I’ll have to put myself out there and it’s really scary because I have no idea what I’m in for. I feel like I know a bit more now, though, thanks to your video. I can’t wait for more videos like these !!
I would love to know what you would recommend current college/university students to do while doing their degree. I think the excel tip is very useful, so I think I'm going to do a Skillshare course on that! But I'd love for you to go a little bit more in dept on what you recommend we should do or what you regret not doing while in uni.
This gives me a bit of hope. I haven't found anything good or interesting and have considered joining the military but don't know if itll be for me. Just going to keep trying.
You’ve come so far from the girl that got the Hotkey job, which I still remember watching. Love hearing your story and it is motivating me so much! Bravo! 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for sharing this! Some videos discussing design and publication would be really helpful. I’m thinking about going into publication when I’ve graduated this summer, and this video series is going to be really helpful!
booksandquills sorry I meant production not publication! I’m studying illustration at the moment and the design aspect for publication is something that I’m interested in
So excited for this series! I would love to know about how you structured your resume/CV, and where you fit things like digital and social media skills into it? :)
Super informative ! People never talk about publishing in my country so I never truly understood what kind of work it entails haha, always seemed like something I'd like though !
Thank you so much for making this video. Being part of the publishing industry has always been an interest of mine, but I never knew just how to go about it. I'm really looking forward to the following videos. 😊❤
Thank you so much for making this video! It's really helpful to me because I'm trying to get as much experience in publishing while studying for my Masters, and hoping to get a job once I finish. Looking forward to seeing more videos, something about making job applications or interview tips would be amazing. :)
Thank you for this. I'm trying to get a job in a completely unrelated field, I have a science degree and want to go into a career in science outreach but I'm struggling to find a job. I graduated in July and had a temporary job from then until October but haven't had another one since and am getting increasingly worried about how bad the gap in employment is starting to look on my CV. I've tried applying to supermarket and retail jobs in the meantime so at least I have something but I keep getting rejected from those as well, even though I've worked in retail multiple times in the past! Just feeling quite deflated and anxious about it at the moment but hearing your story makes me hopeful.
This was such an engaging and educational video! Thank you so much for sharing. I have always wanted to get into publishing but unfortunately there aren't any opportunities where I am at. It was great to hear how your career has progressed and it is nice to know that it did take work to get where you are at. Love your videos!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I really needed a video like this one. I am a modern languages atudent about to graduate and I want to work in publishing, however I feel like I don´t know wnough about it or how a publishing house works and all the different people that are involved in the industry. I would really like if you could talk about the different careers that are involved with publishing and all the different ways you can be in publishing beyond being and editor. I´m looking forward for the next videos :) xx
This is so fascinating! It’s very cool to see the journey of your career so far! I would love to know more about book cover design because I am interested in going into that field.
Great video! I would love to learn more about the different jobs within publishing and what a typical day is like for them. Guest speakers would be great as well! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing. This is awesome! I also work in publishing, but in Canada for an ebook retailer which is so where I didn't expect to end up. I would be curious to hear your thoughts on getting into editorial. My experience as I was finishing up my Publishing certificate was that getting an editorial assistantship was equivalent to seeing a unicorn. We were kind of discouraged by instructors to pursue it. I feel like that is such a different experience to your department: a new/quickly developing area vs. a traditional one with its own rules. By the way, congrats on making a career out of something you enjoy--it's so hard! Seems like you worked a lot and your passion for it shows. :)
Heey, Sanne, thank you for this video! I am actually looking for some internships these days (I am a Communications/Journalism grad student) and my dream is to work on a publishing house. This video was kinda of inspiring and I decided to apply to a internship in one of my favorites publishers right now. Wish me luck!
Thanks for sharing! I love the videos you used to do with Rosianna about your career crises or non crises, so this was lovely too. I would love to know more about the design department, but also how do you go about working in editing if your mother tongue is not english. I'm really exicited about this videos series! Thank you again for sharing! :)
This is SUCH a helpful video! I really would love to get a job in publishing. Ultimately, I'd really love to be an author, but getting into the industry through the other side would be equally as wonderful and valuable. I'm moving to London as well come May/June so knowing how you went about it is super helpful. I'm brushing up on my resume/CV and trying to take as many online courses as I can. Would you be able to make a video talking about getting a job as a foreigner? Like was there any forms you had to fill out to apply, any identifying pieces of ID that are special to the UK etc. Now THAT would help me out even more lol. Doing my own research can only get me so far. Thanks! xx
Hey fellow soon to-be London resident! I'm moving there in April, and I've already did a bit (a lot) of research, I'd be more than happy to share it with you so we could help each other out :-) xx
Thank you! I recently visited London and fell in love with the city and I'm really considering if it's viable to move there. I'm currently working a boring office job in Dublin so London is very appealing haha. This was a really reassuring video because my brain was telling me that if I don't get a job within the first month then it'll just be a big fail. But I have money saved like you did and hey, life's short. 😀
I loved listening and hearing how you started on your publishing career. I'm thankful for it as well because I just recently graduated from university with my undergrad, but my degree is not in English (it happens to be in History) and I've been looking for some information on how to get started in a publishing career. Thank you for sharing how you got started and if you have any tips for how I could get started on my own publishing career journey it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for this video ❤️ I want to go into publishing and I'm currently at uni, my degree is really academic so I have zero job experience and I'm quite worried this will influence my future, even though I guess everyone needs to start somewhere. Hopefully I'll be able to get a masters degree in publishing and maybe that will help, but I'll definitely take the suggestion of brushing up some digital knowledge 😘
i'm very interested in seeing more videos about this as i'm currently considering applying for a master's in publishing so any insight would be very helpful to me! this couldn't have come at a better time!
This was amazing! Can't wait for more videos on publishing as my dream is to work in a publishing house! Just finished my degree in English too. Question: What does an employer look for when hiring a publishing editor or assistant and what kinds of questions might they ask? Thanks!
This was such a helpful video Sanne, thank you so much!! I also want to get into publishing, and during my degree I have been getting work experience with different size publishers at home and also in my uni city. I also have a TH-cam channel and a book blog😊 I’m aware that I’m really going to have to persevere to get into the industry - it’s always useful to be reminded of this and hear of other people who did not give up, because I think I could find it really disheartening to be rejected so I just need to remember it is normal! I’m particularly interested in the editorial aspects of publishing, so if you have any friends in editorial that would be happy to talk that would be fab haha!😊
Hey, I am watching your videos for 2-3 years now and I just wanted to say that I love watching you speak about books, I'm always curious what are you reading at the moment etc. But this video is super interesting for me, because I work in publishing too - in Bulgaria - and I am translator of books in English. It would be so nice if we could meet and chat, so sorry that we live so far away :)
Thanks for watching! I'm looking into getting some friends and colleagues who work across different departments together for future video too. :)
Nice video, Sanne! I'm also in the beginning of my publishing career, working as an international literary scout. Scouting might be a good area of publishing to cover in your future video, since few people understand it (I started without knowing basically anything, haha).

I'm currently in Haarlem, Netherlands, desperately trying to find a job so I can stay in this beautiful country. Hopefully it won't take me a year! Any tips are welcome!
Your accent is like an American and British accent at once. I find that very neat 👌🏽👌🏽
Yeah, real mid-Atlantic accent, lol.
Thank you so so much for doing this. I am 16 years old and I have this dream of starting my own publishing company but I was about to give up because I didn't find it as realistic but you just inspired me, so, thank you so much and please keep doing this.

+Andrea Heckler I guess they thought the admin role wouldn’t suite me and that o was looking for something else, which is fair enough!

I recently got a job as a publisher at a Belgian publishing company, so the timing of this video is perfect 👌🏻

Have you watched Younger? It's based in a publishing house, a lot of it is probably very exaggerate, but I found it fun to watch.

I’ve been applying to Penguin Random House forever. I just can’t get in. I want to cry.
Me too. Anything entry level that comes up I'm on it but I never even get an interview :'(
@@SuKiJpB keep trying, don't give up! It can take a while sometimes 🙂
I feel you. Same here.
how's it going now?
Me too. I’ve applied 8 times now!
"You're too ambiitous" was just code for "We are afraid of what you might say on youtube and we can't control you."
Thank you! I was desperately in need of some direction and your video was helpful.

i love videos (or any type of content) about careers and jobs, so this is great! i would really like to hear more about the process of applying to your first job. what were the things you feel like you did right and what are some things that now looking back you feel like you could have done differently (even tho everything worked out for the best)? and in future episodes with other people i would also be very interested in hearing about their first jobs in the field and how they got them. i feel like it is that first job that often opens up so many other opporturnities and it is that time before you get that job that feels the most terrifying. i'm graduating at the end of this year and the whole applying for internships/jobs seems absolutely terrifying, this type of content really helps sooth my anxiety :D.
I have a publishing internship in the summer and I'm so excited to start!
this was super encouraging! you make it seem way less intimidating than it is, which i guess does make it less intimidating.
I'd love to hear more about the process of moving to the UK and also tips on how to navigate the job market in London/England!
This gives me a bit of hope. I haven't found anything good or interesting and have considered joining the military but don't know if itll be for me. Just going to keep trying.
Your career progress is so inspirational... Congratulations!
You’ve come so far from the girl that got the Hotkey job, which I still remember watching. Love hearing your story and it is motivating me so much! Bravo! 👏👏👏
Thanks, u inspired me, this video help me to do my assignment.
Thank you so much for sharing this! Some videos discussing design and publication would be really helpful. I’m thinking about going into publication when I’ve graduated this summer, and this video series is going to be really helpful!
What kind of publication are you interested in?
booksandquills sorry I meant production not publication! I’m studying illustration at the moment and the design aspect for publication is something that I’m interested in
Haha go it! I have a video on my channel where I chat to a cover designer in case that's helpful too.
booksandquills thank you!!
so interesting! I'm looking for an internship in the same field as well for my university so this is very interesting!
Thank you for sharing your story
Same here!
I really enjoyed this video Sanne 💛 It was so lovely to learn a little more about you and your career path so far.
Thank you so much for creating this video. I've been thinking of going into publishing for a while and this video is really helpful. X
This was super interesting and helpful, Sanne. Cannot wait for the rest of the videos in this series! :) x
So interesting to hear how you've grown into your career!
Thanks for sharing! I love the videos you used to do with Rosianna about your career crises or non crises, so this was lovely too. I would love to know more about the design department, but also how do you go about working in editing if your mother tongue is not english. I'm really exicited about this videos series! Thank you again for sharing! :)
Super interesting video! I would love to continue to see more content made on this subject, it's an industry I'd love to work in!
I’ve recently just finished my very first book on Wattpad
Thanks! xx
I've got a video called 'Moving to London 101' which might be helpful!
I don't have anything to do with publishing, but I really enjoyed litening to your story.
I so enjoyed this video -- really interesting and useful. Thanks for sharing your experiences Sanne.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience.. i wish to have a similar opportunity but i live in Morocco /;
This was fantastic!! Really loved this video!! Very interesting
this is so interesting! thank you so much for this video. :) I'm in my last year of university, and I will definitely give Skillshare a shot.
This is great for people like me who want to get into publishing.
I would LOVE to hear the whole story about you moving to London :)
i'm very interested in seeing more videos about this as i'm currently considering applying for a master's in publishing so any insight would be very helpful to me! this couldn't have come at a better time!
This was amazing! Can't wait for more videos on publishing as my dream is to work in a publishing house! Just finished my degree in English too. Question: What does an employer look for when hiring a publishing editor or assistant and what kinds of questions might they ask? Thanks!
Good idea I was curious about this topic
It’s validating to know I’m not the only person having a hard time finding a job in publishing right after school
inspiring. thank you and all the best to you.
This was so interesting and useful! Really looking forward to future videos. :D
Yea, I agree editing and formatting can get out of hand. {quick|fast}
Thank you for making this video, it was really helpful! Can you make a video on other jobs in publishing such as editor or marketing coordinator?
Thank you so much, this is so helpful!
God bless! And that’s so weird that they wouldn’t get somewhere because you’re too ambitious! But at least you got the job you ❤️
Hi
This was so interesting to hear it all
Love this video! 😍
this is a super cool video. Good job, Sanne! *high5*
