Being able to work on books you don't love is HUGE! I proofread stuff all the time that I'm just meh about. Even aside from it being necessary for gaining experience, it gives me an opportunity to think about why I don't like something, and whether my dislike is based on my taste or bigger editorial issues. It ultimately makes me a better reader, writer, & editor.

Working in publishing now I tell everyone I can to volunteer at their local literary festival. That’s how I got in. It’s a great way to meet lovely industry folks and you get to meet/listen to a huge variety of authors. If you have a great time working then you know you’re in the right career.

I work in a library and I relate to this video so much. I love reading but I also love working on book displays to encourage people to take out more books on mental health for example. And I love talking to the customers about their opinions on the books they check out and making genuine connections. It's a beautiful community

This is such an interesting topic, and I never hear much about publishing or what it reeeaaally is. I’ll be studying graphic design at uni next year, but I’d eventually love to work within book design at some point. I’ve written a long report regarding how the cover design of Narnia has changed since 1950, and found the difference in marketing strategies so very interesting. This makes me want to work around books, and I want to hear you talk about it more!!

Dropping my questions here and in the Gumption Group (Just to make sure :P)
My Q's: Which field/specific job in publishing to you think suits someone with a literature degree best? I always worry about too much marketing not enough bookish.
How many of the commonly known stereotypes about getting into publishing/starting off in publishing as a newbie do actually have truth in it? Like for example the commonly used image that when you start of you're just there for the coffee

Find the publishing industry so interesting and such an enigma, from the author side. 3 years of going through the process of getting published, I'm still googling and asking my agent very basic questions about how it all works, and really can't think of an industry where you are working with an industry but not really understand it, if that makes sense! Would love to know what authors should knowabout book covers, contracts etc or even just your experience of working with authors

I'm a bookseller and I love it! Editing has always been my dream job and I can definitely see how being a bookseller is helping me learn more about publishing. I'm very lucky to have the opportunity and to live in an area where people are able to splurge on books and keep our business in the running (although I have developed a bias against Amazon; they steal a whole lot of business, not to mention everything else unethical about that company). Great video!

I want to do something with business psychology, but don't know what kind of business, so I applied at some publishers and a german musical company to be a tester for their books and shows. If you can do that, do it! You basically get their books (or tickets for their show) for free and then need to write some short reviews on it and that's it. It also means you sometimes have to read (see) stuff that isn't your genre but I really like it anyways :)

Any tips on finding local events? I've gotten as far as signing up to alerts from Caboodle but of the bookshops they cover none are really close...
Volunteering or working in a library is also a good way to learn about reading habits! Plus as it's not retail, the people aren't as rude (or at least in my experience...)
Q: You're not looking for an assistant at all? Or know someone who is? ;)
Oh! And for anyone wanting to support local bookshops, there's a site called hive (no, not the one that does thermostats) which donate a portion of a sale price to a local bookshop of your choice - it's great if your nearest independent is too far, or if they have a limited stock.

I don't agree with the idea that books are the start of a story (ie - there to cross fertilise into other media like t.v or film where they somehow become 'complete'). Prose fiction is my favourite way of receiving a narrative.

Speaking of books- have you read “hope in the dark” by Rebecca Solnit? Because it’s the best book I’ve read in a while and it’s SO YOU!after reading it I feel like running out and saving the world and I would LOVE to hear your response to it because it’s wonderful! And so are your videos!

Thank you so much for this video! I'm looking into becoming an editor and am doing a short course in editing at uni - what would you say are the prospects for editors (especially for novels) in the UK? I'm in South Africa and here most of the opportunities seem to be for non-fiction and things like reports. Also, would you say editing is a good way to get into the publishing industry in general? Love your videos, keep it up!

Thank you so much for this video! I am a first year English student and I think I really want to work in publishing one day, but there just is not that much information surrounding it online. So this video was really helpful and I cannot wait for the rest of the series! My question would be: Do you need any specific qualifications for any jobs in publishing? And do any publishing houses offer work experience or training schemes? Thank you!x

Can solicitors work in publishing? Is there room for lawyers/solicitors in a publishing house?
