Basement Ceiling Paint Black // Hand-painted + Wagner sprayer (Learn from me: USE a ROLLER instead!)

  • 3 gallons and 3 days to paint 543 Sqft without renting a pro paint sprayer. Bought a Wagner Airless Sprayer on Amazon (goo.gl/12JPPM) and used hand tools instead. Total cost for all tools & materials was just around $220. Was it worth it? Nope! Toward the end, I decided to just use a roller, which applied paint quicker and thicker. Should have done that from the start!!
    I'm definitely not a professional painter. If I had to do it again, I would probably rent the air compressor and spray device.
    The Wagner sprayer I used was only about $70, and I will definitely use it again for other projects in the future, so it was a good investment.
    Using the roller and hand brush was a cheap and easy way to go. It just took a longer time than others I know who rented a more professional sprayer.

    Thx for posting. Going through this same basement painting. This was helpful. I think Ill use a combined method. Roller and brush are much faster. I'll use sprayer for hard to reach areas.

    Howdy Y'all. Looking back, I can totally see that this was not the best tool for the job. I got a deal on the sprayer, and was bound and determined to make it work. More to the point, this video is meant to show how "well" (or poorly) it works and to help the larger community decide if they would like to get one themselves. Seeing is believing! I would suggest anyone who wants to save money on renting just go with a roller - I did end up rolling a few beams toward the end. It worked much better - it spread faster and the coat was much thicker. I was still able to use it for some other minor projects (painting over a sanded-down night stand) where I wanted to avoid brush strokes as much as possible. I'm sure there's a technique out there to avoid brush strokes while still using a brush, but I'm just not very savvy with it; the sprayer made up for my inadequacies.

    Yeah that large of a job calls for an airless sprayer where you can do a 6 ft section in 5 seconds. The little handheld electric spray guns are made for doing a piece of furniture, a door, etc. about as effective as a spray can, not for serious sq. ft.

    I appreciate your prep work and dedication. People already said it though. That’s the wrong tool. For $200 more you could have grabbed the Graco hand held with the same cup refill system.

    The settings on that sprayer must have been jacked. Those things work so much better than that. I did a 50x15 underside of my deck in 3 hours. Spraying was fast and effective.

      I thinned mine so little I may as well have not thinned it at all. That was a big contributing factor to the slow speed, I'm sure, but as uneducated as I was at the time of the filming, I went through with it anyway. Lessons learned the hard way.

    • @ChadGabriel
      @ChadGabriel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Oskar Dirlewanger I did not thin mine at all with my Wagner sprayer. One of the advertised features of the HVLP sprayers is that you don't need to thin most paints. The trick is finding the right paint amount setting combined with the right air-speed setting. Once you get locked-in it works very well.

    I learned a lot from this video, so thank you! We are undertaking a similar basement remodel, and the sound proofing for the office has us completely stumped. Can you please share what you used for that? Please? Tia.

    • @realryanhomes6858
      @realryanhomes6858  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the really late reply! I only sound proofed one corner of the basement for my office. I used Rockwool insulation and 2 layers of 5/8" drywall on the ceiling. Instead of paint on the walls, I used cheap gray carpet from home depot to help deaden the sound. I haven't made a video about it, but it works pretty well. Hope this helps!

    I went to Florida in September to paint the interior and exterior of my n-law’s new house. I rented the magnum 17 paint sprayer from Home Depot. It took me four 6 hour days to prime and paint a 4 bedroom home with attached garage. The house is a 1800 sq. ft. I sprayed two coats of primer, and two coats of paint; every square foot including garage. A total of 24 hours. It’s sad to witness your waste of time, material, and money!

    • @realryanhomes6858
      @realryanhomes6858  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. It was a waste of time. As I said in other comments, a roller would have been better. I'm not arguing the fact. Not every video on TH-cam has to be promotional - although at the time of filming, I didn't know better and was filming thinking that I was doing a lot while spending less. You can learn from others' mistakes. Feel free to link the sprayer you rented here.

  • @bmoreyella
    @bmoreyella 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Settings on sprayer were wrong. My exact sprayer like that puts out too much paint sometimes and I have to turn it down.. Also if the bottle is screwed on too tight it will not spray right. Definitely not hand rolling and brushing an entire ceiling..

    • @realryanhomes6858
      @realryanhomes6858  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I do screw that bottle on too tight every time. I'll go easy on it next time I use it to see if that works. Thanks for the tip. Also, this paint was pretty thick. Wondering if that had something to do with it.

    I have a question. What did you do about the insulation?
    Did you paint it? Or just pull it down?

    • @realryanhomes6858
      @realryanhomes6858  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, sorry for the late reply. The frost barrier around the walls you mean? I left that up. Still have yet to finish the basement, but the insulation around the walls is pretty important in keeping the temp regulated and condensation down in the basement so I'm going to leave that up and frame / drywall over it eventually.

    Is there a flow control of the sprayer? it is set too low.

    • @realryanhomes6858
      @realryanhomes6858  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Actually, the flow is all the way open. I made the mistake of not thinning the paint when I sprayed, so it came out really slowly. In retrospect, I would also recommend using a roller for the main areas and a brush or the sprayer for the hard to reach areas only. It would save a lot of time, for sure.

      Yep, it did! Definitely suggest using a roller or renting a proper sprayer with an air compressor. I did another section using a roller, and it came out looking better and took less time. A bit more messy, but on concrete floors, it doesn't matter much.
