  • I have been using the Yale YRD220 Z-Wave Door Lock for a year and thought I'd do a quick review/overview to share my pros and cons about the lock. I use it with Vera so I talk a little about how well the two devices interface with one another.

    Hi - nice review, what do you think of Yale Real Living Lock Manager with Control4. This shows battery life on the Yale lock..

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      zwarst Thanks! I actually have never used Control4. I have heard good things though. I know that the Vera will show the battery life so I'm assuming the Lock Manager would be similar. It works ok but I'm not sure how accurate it is because it said the batteries still had 50% life after almost a year. Maybe I could have gone longer but I didn't want to risk the wife getting locked out :)

    Have you thought about if they break the window and just turn the knob from the inside? Not trying to be a troll but that has been my concern with any deadbolt by a window.

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah. I need to replace the door. The problem is they could just move to a window. Unless you have some sort of bullet proof glass or bars on the windows it is relatively easy to enter most homes.

      If someone wants to get into your home they'll find a way. These smart locks are meant to make it easier to enter not harder for burglars.

      You can program it to do pretty much anything you want as long as your controller is capable. However, I would be careful to think through all scenarios before you implement anything. What if you approach the door from inside the house? Good luck!

    Hi...have two questions...1. You only need to buy Vera's controller? don't you need to plug some module to the lock in the battery case as well? 2. does it keep a log with date/time of when the lock was opened/closed?

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sebastian Colmenares Gil
      1. Mine came with it but yes you do need a zwave module that plugs into the lock.
      2. Yes, this can be set up in the Vera. You can also configure it to email you which would give you the date time stamp as well.

      I have my lock send me an email every time it's unlocked that has the name of the person who unlocked it so, basically it's indefinite. I am using Vera to send the notifications so if Vera were to go down I wouldn't get a notification but my Vera is pretty stable.
      I'm not sure if the Yale lock has an internal log or not. Hopefully that helps.

    I purchased a home recently that has this type of deadbolt. After searching all the manuals left with the house, alas, there was not one for this lock. I have been unsuccessful at getting the previous owner to give me detailed instruction, and we were still using the passcode that they gave us, which of course, they have also. When I left the house last, I was looking through the set of keys for a key to the screen door (which I never found), and came across a "yale" key. Figuring it fit the deadbolt, I checked to see if it did indeed fit. Yes, it did, and it locked the door, but also locked out any use of the keypad and/or key. I seem to have done something terribly wrong. I called Yale, they seemed quite disinterested and told me to call a locksmith. I don't seem to be able to find a manual online. Do you know if these are programmed with any sort of super master code that would enable me to begin using it again? Have you ever had a problem like this? I'd appreciate any guidance you can give to me. Thanks!

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I haven't experienced this. We don't use the key. Here is a link to a manual that may help. www.alarmgrid.com/documents/yale-real-living-yrd-220-install-guide
      Do you have a home automation controller too? You can reset pin codes from that if you do. If I were you I would try to do a master reset though because you need to put in a master pin that the previous owners will know.

    • @sigimatte3576
      @sigimatte3576 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I realize this a 3 years old, but for somebody new there is a master reset button on the other side of the battery compartment. Hold it down for several seconds and reinstall battery's while still holding the button and then you can reprogram the entire lock.

    Thanksfor the review. I was wondering if it was possible to link specific actions to key codes. For example. The housekeeper comes in on Tueday and I would like the lights and CCTV to turn on when she inputs her code. Do you know if this is possible with the Yale software or even with the Vera? Many thanks.

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen Yes, it is definitely possible with the Vera. Since the lock is Z-Wave there isn't any Yale software that I'm aware of. All configuration is done directly on the lock or in the Z-Wave controller (Vera). Anyway, back to the triggers... I have a few different ones set up. For example, deactivate the alarm when code is entered, turn on Sonos to my favorite station when my code is entered while it's still day time (don't want it turning on at night). I also have our entry light turn on when it's dark and a code is entered.

    Is the lock not send a notice when locked by touch still a problem? I have the same lock in Australia marketed as Lockwood, with a controller from Igloohome. I do get log messages that it was locked by touch, un/lock manually, and by user name.
    Aside, I'm checking out your video because Igloohome is closing support for this product (they are a subscription service, picking up my airbnb calendar, automatically setting codes for guests). So I need to roll my own solution. I've now bought a Vera Edge controller, but my first problem, I can't pair the lock to the Vera. Not quite, I can't unpair it from the Igloohome.
    A reset of the lock, did not work. It cleared the lock, but not the z-wave module.
    Any ideas? I asked Igloohome if they remotely unpair, no reponse yet. I asked lockwood how to reset the z-wave, no reponse yet. But it is a weekend.
    Worst case I might have to replace the z-wave module, or worst the whole lock. (z-wave uses a difference frequency in Australia, so it cost 2x what you would pay in Trump land, because we can use oversea versions)

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, those notifications sound great. Nothing has changed on my end but I'm not on the latest Vera software so maybe that would help (but I doubt it because it seems like it's programmed in the lock). Maybe your version is different.
      I haven't tried to unpair it but I thought there was a way in the settings. It has been so long since I've been in there but I thought there was a way to get into the z-wave settings by pressing 7 (maybe)? Can you manually unpair from Igloohome? Sorry, I don't have any good ideas for you to try other than things I'm guessing you already did...

    • @markjacksonpulver3546
      @markjacksonpulver3546 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Igloohome showed how to unpair with there interface. So I'm now paired with the VeraEdge.
      I've only had it up overnight. I looking at the logs for the device I do see log message when the door is locked. I assume this is from the touch. I does message when the lock is manually locked/unlocked. But the icon reflects the locks state.
      Now to see how to have my AirBnB calendar program the lock....

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Jackson Pulver Yeah, my desire was to have an update when it was locked from the touchscreen (not just locked manually). I would love to know that it was locked from the outside so it can be used for activating the alarm. I have found workarounds for that though so it's not too big of a deal for me.
      Glad you got it working!

      I use the kwikset lock and have been since day one. It is probably 6yrs old or so. Maybe older. This came out right as the schlage crap lock and bridge came out. It has worked well since it came out. Zero issues. The battery lasts about 8-12 months with heavy use. It uses 4 aa batteries. I do however like the hidden numbers and ability to shut down when it takes to long for someone to hit numbers on the phone. It also looks like it costs more. I would pick the kwikset again because I like the Re-key option with the same keys I have been using. Anyway great video demo...

    Have you done any presence detection yet? Say you get to the front door and it knows you're there because of your phone or a key-fob and auto unlocks the door for you? This is something I am looking to do...

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil McDonnell tried some presence detection with my phone using Tasker/AutoLocation but it either drained my battery too quickly or was just too inaccurate to be useful so I turned it off. If you use an iPhone I think there is a plugin for Vera that performs better but I have never tried it. I can't recall the name though. I also haven't done too much research because I usually enter through my garage and it only takes a push of a button to enter/exit.
      Also, if you are just looking for a lock that opens (but doesn't integrate with Vera yet) you may want to checkout the Kwikset Kevo lock.
      Are you still looking for a controller or do you already have a Vara?

    • @PhilMcDonnell
      @PhilMcDonnell 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Pete B I am looking for a controller and probably am going with Vera. Not sure if I am going with the new Vera Edge or with the trusty Vera Lite...

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phil McDonnell I have a love/hate relationship with Vera. It lets me do almost anything I want without costing thousands of dollars but it also takes some TLC and learning to get it configured how you want. Overall I'm happy and I still think I would buy one again knowing what's out there currently. I would much rather spend money on more devices than the monthly fee that comes along with most controllers. One thing I'm SO happy I did was get the Vera 3. It has double the memory over the Lite and that's one of the most needed things in Vera. I have no idea why the Edge doesn't have more than it does but I would consider that over Lite just for the added memory. It seems like it has some other specs that are better too because it says it can handle 220 devices (I think the Vera 3 was 100+). I haven't gone to UI7 so I can't speak to that though.

    • @PhilMcDonnell
      @PhilMcDonnell 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that info, I guess the Vera 3 it is then... I have read a lot of complaints about UI7. Also I don't want monthly fees either and I also don't want to HAVE to use the cloud. The new Smart Things which looks real cool is 100% run in the cloud. Lose your internet connection and your HA system stops working...

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phil McDonnell Yeah, I agree with you about not using the cloud. I have already had internet issues and everything still runs fine with Vera.

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The glass on my door (not the screen on the lock) or a window on the main floor. The main point is that people are all worked up about using a paper clip to unlock it (which I wasn't able to do so it's not as easy as it sounds) but there are many ways to get into a house if someone wants to.

      @davvvvvo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pete B Haha I did remind them once a week asking how they are going with the implementation of the lock. using U7, haven't had one issue with U7. You might have to take the plunge and upgrade. I have only tested it with pressing the keypad so far, works flawlessly.

      davvvvvo Ha, I'll have to try that next time. I know I will need to take the UI7 plunge at some point but everything is working right now that I'm putting it off as long as I can. I'd be interested to know if you scene still runs if you lock from things other than the keypad. Like from the inside of the door or from a mobile app. That's the problem I ran into. It didn't know where I was locking it from.

      Good question. It definitely has its flaws but if you like to tinker it is a great value for the money (no monthly fees). You could always start with one of the free controllers and move to Vera or something else if when you need to. MySensors.org is a great resource if you are looking to do it cheap. It takes some time to learn though.

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's all you need. You just need to make sure you have the Vera fairly close to the lock. If it's not going to be that close you may need a device in the middle to extend the range. Also, you may want to consider getting the new Vera instead of the lite. It will allow you to expand your system more if you ever want too and it's not too much more money.

    • @patrickjackson2077
      @patrickjackson2077 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much Pete for your quick response, I've had the lock since September and wasn't sure what I needed, I will check the price for the newer version Vera, and hopefully get that one. Also you mentioned that it needed to be set up close to the lock, how close do you mean ? Right now it would be set up about 20 yards away , do you think that would be okay?

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Jackson Hmm. How many walls do you have in between? According to the specs it can reach 100 yards but I think that would be greatly reduced by walls. I have a pretty small house and none of my devices need to travel that far so I can't say for sure. My lock is only about 8 yards away from the Vera. Also, I just thought of something. Are you sure your lock has z-wave built in? I think some of the locks where sold without z-wave but look the same. Mine has a green z-wave module just above where the batteries go. Hopefully that helps a little. If it is z-wave and it has trouble communicating with the lock you could always just buy a light switch or something to go between. Be careful though. It's addicting once you start :)

    • @patrickjackson2077
      @patrickjackson2077 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, yes I made sure before I bought the lock that it had z wave, and yes I had to place a little module inside just above the battery, but thanks for the heads up. I just checked, and the Vera 3 was 299 new and the Vera lite is 99, is the 3 that much better? because I'm on a bit of a budget. lol

    • @peteb9105
      @peteb9105  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Jackson Ha! Ok, good! Just wanted to make sure...
      Yeah, I hear you on the budget! The Vera Edge is the newest model and is only $150. It is supposed to be able to handle 220 devices. I know that sounds like a lot of devices but I think an extra $50 is worth it for future expansion (just my opinion). One of the coolest things about Vera is all the great plugins but they do take up memory. What ever you decide you'll be good.

      The lock is paired the same as any other z-wave device. You would want to look at the install instructions but generally you put them both in to "pairing" mode and they will find each other. After that you can begin controlling it remotely.
      The model of lock depends on what location you're in. Z-Wave frequencies are different around the world so make sure you get one designed for where you live. You can get a Vera from getvera.com

      +Pete B whats useful is a lock that reads your pulse.. using the sensor in the phone. just place your hand on the finger print thingy or the camera on your phone and the door opens.. and if the phone is dead.. the lock will have the same technology.. so it reads your body temperature and pulse and print.. to make sure its not a cold dead hand.. hahaha. also these things should be wired to the homes power.. and not batteries. unless the batteries are inside of the actual door.. big ass batteries that last years. take those ideas and go to the shark tank and remember my name.

      Justin Maloney Haha! That would be sweet. Could use a fitbit/smart watch for pulse too. I probably would need to have my doors/windows encased in bullet proof glass first though...
      I totally agree about the hard-wiring/bigger batteries. Mine last about a year but still it would be good to never have to change them. They make hinges that will pass power through them but they were too expensive for me. Maybe they will become more common as time goes on...
