    Guys, I'm 69 years old. I remember when the radio played this song constantly because it was a huge hit! I loved Ernie Ford's arrangement. He'd be proud of what you guys have done to it. I've heard others try and pull it off but not to my liking. You guys did a fabulous job! Much thanks.

      A few years ago a Mate of mine told me he was looking at going into one of those retirement Estates and maybe I should also.. I quickly rejected and such suggestion by saying "What and LIVE with all those OLD people" ... Likewise I am totally unbelieving of those during the Corona Lockdown who are complaining of boredom...Not enough time in the day for me to become bored as I have so many Positive things to do that I am never Bored except that is for listening to those whingers being BORED!!!.
      I have always appreciated good melodies and extremely Talented Singers such as obviously Ernie, Nat King Cole, Michael Holliday, Matt Munro, Jane Morgan, Shirley Bassey, John Williamson(Australian Balladeer), Kathy Kirby, Harpers Bazaar, The Seekers, Buddy Holley, Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli Time to say goodbye, Johnny Cash, Joe Brown, Lonnie Donnigan .... @@altaylor3988 you sound like a rebelous young punk! I agree with you. I like some new music but I'm very selective. A lot of stuff that's popular I just don't understand why it's good. It's cool seeing younger people recognizing artists of the past and carrying it forward. I'm 34 and feel like a crotchety old man already. I just hope I can hold it off for another 49 years and have at least 1/10th of whatever it is you have when I get that age. Thank you for the reply Sir! You have the best week ever.

    Saw them in concert on Father's Day weekend with my 6 and 13 year old. My daughter yells out, 16 Tons! Carson said, sure, I think we can do that one and they started playing it. I can't fathom how much that hurts. You have my condolences, even though I'm just some guy on the internet. I hope you're able to still find happiness in daily life. For those who are too young to know, "I owe my soul to the company store." refers to being indebted to the company, that is to say, what you get paid is less than it takes to survive, therefore you got to take out a loan from the company store to survive. So, everything you get paid, goes right back to the company, (as though they didn't pay you in the first place, and not only that, you end up owing the company rather than them owing you. It was a way of keeping employees needy and subservient to the company owners.

    • @ehrmanehrmann7115
      @ehrmanehrmann7115 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      People don't understand the way company towns were and some still are. Basically the entire community is dependent on a single industry operated by a single company. With mining towns back in the day the companies would allow miners to work in unsafe conditions and then when the father/breadwinner died in a mine collapse they would provide for the widow and her sons with the assumption those boys would grow up to work in the same dangerous mine because there were so few opportunities to get out of the cycle when you're born into that kind of isolation and poverty. This is my favourite song. Slavery and indentured servitude are wrong in all forms.

    Wow, Carson. I almost didn’t click on this because nobody can do justice to the great Ernie Ford - but you did. I’m speechless. Thanks, for bringing this back. It’s as relevant today as it was 50 years ago.

    I'm 72...l'm not an Italian...but a Brazilian who've lived in 2 English-speaking countries. I started learning E when l was 21...so I had a lot of catching up to do. Some songs l'd hear but didn't follow the lyrics...especially non-melodic songs like "16 tons". I was amazed to realize I followed the lyrics of "16 tons" sung by Carson and understood the whole meaning for the very 1st time. As you see, it's never too late for anything.

    I’m well into my 40s and have loved this song since before I could walk, (according to my mother,) I’ve heard plenty of covers but I don’t know of many that could hold water to this one. Well done gents, faithful to the original but you definitely put your own stamp on it! Really enjoyed it.

    Great vocals, excellent guitar work, just a fantastic rendition of this tremendous classic...….excellent job - very impressive and sooooooooo enjoyable to listen to...….you guys nailed it!!! I spent 40+ years in the coal mining industry in W.VA. and my parents used to take me to the "Company Store" and use scrip (a company issued form of currency), to purchase food, furniture, gasoline, etc. from the Company Store. Years later mom and dad finally escaped the grasp of the "Company Store" and since those days the Company Stores have dwindled away one by one. Thank you so much for the top notch job you did on this Merle Travis/Tennessee Ernie Ford classic!!!

    Great. I remember watching the Tennessee Ernie Ford SHow and you really bring back his wonderful sound. He was such a big star that EVERYONE wanted to be on his show,and other stars shows added episodes for him to be in so they’d get a boost in ratings.. I know kids today can’t imagine that but he crossed all the music genres. KEEP IT UP YOU’RE GREAT !
