I'm a 27 year old business owner. No kids (yet) but I'm constantly traveling and on the move. The days of siting for hours in front of a TV are long gone for me. I skipped the Wii U gen(no console since 2008) and I'm happy to say that the Switch has brought me back to gaming. I've never played Doom and was happy to get it. The Switch is just so much more convenient for me to play games on. Currently have Doom, Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids, Zelda BOTW, Street Fighter 2, Splatoon, and a received Skyrim which I have never played either. Nintendo's product in genius and exactly what I need for my lifestyle. Great Video Rich, keep up the amazing work!
I never played Doom either and it is great. I wish I hadn’t completed Skyrim twice already on my PS3 as it doesn’t seem worth buying now. The First party games are so good also. I love the Switch.

I share your feelings on the console. I love it. I bough the Xbox one when it first came out and have barely touched it. I've already used my Switch more in the first six months of ownership.

It could also be that the Switch is more compatible with my age.. With two little ones even when I have downtime I'm not sequestered away in front of a television - much easier to have a portable system to play on for the brief moments when I'm not needed.
+Lon.TV exactly. Ever since my son has been here if I have 20 minutes to play games today that's a lot. So having something I can take with me everywhere that has games I want to play is a huge deal.
I've never doubted the Switch. I'm one of those people who are "aware" of the downgraded graphics because obviously the Switch is a Tablet. But the "potential" and the "innovation" of having a Triple Ayyyy Games on the GO wherever you GO, man that's unique and very different from Sony and Microsoft. I also saw that if the Switch succeeded from the 3rd party support, chances of having a PSP Switch or XBox Switch from those 2 companies, they're already left behind. Nintendo can ramp up a Nintendo Switch V2 but with a better hardware.

I have 5 friends that bought the Switch, 35+ y/o, 4 of them have kids. Amazingly, for these 4 friends, with kids, this is the first console in a while. For one of them, his first console, period. The rest had NES. SNES, maybe ps2. I asked them why Switch? Why having now a console, after many, many years without gaming (or maybe, just phone games) They saw Zelda, they saw ads, with Zelda. And the console looks great. Looks fun. and... They can play wherever they want. Having kids, their free time is really intermittent. It's amazing that Rich had the same argument. The so called console-for-babies might have the most adult consumer demography.
I take care of my parents, who are in bad health, full time and the only time I had to game was after they go to bed. The problem with that is by the time they go to bed I'm exhausted and just don't want to play any games. With the Switch, I've been able to play games during the day between taking care of my parents and I've probably gamed more in the last two weeks since getting the Switch than I have in the previous 6 months.
im 31, with 2 kids 1 4 years old and a 2 month old.......im good with my ps4...i dont need zelda i need baseball, i dont want mario i prefer God of war...to each his own but the nintendo is clearly not for everyone

Now in 2021 the Switch is STILL my favorite system. It may be my favorite system I’ve ever owned. If Nintendo releases a “Switch Pro” it’ll just prolong my love for this system.
I just got one on EBay barely used for $300. For some reason I only like playing RPGs in handheld form. I think it’s a nostalgic link to when I played my game boy advance as a kid..playing all kinds of RPGs

That would be the wii-U. The wii U had just tad more power than the PS3/360. What makes the switch unique is that its portable. It represents where console gaming is probably going to end up going as mobile chip sets continue to get better and better. The ARM processor is much more efficient than AMDs x64. And ARM is starting to close the performance gap. ARM is build on a simplistic design with a low amount of instructions. Nvidia is has been investing a lot into mobile graphics. The GPU in the Nintendo switch is an older Tegra X1. The TX2 is much more powerful has been out for a while. The code name "Xavier" chip is going to be released soon. Its a 512 core GPU, 8 core ARM. Its going to be comparable in power to the gpu inside the current gen consoles.
Doom is also the reason I bought the Switch, and I'm also a working father with no time... This is the magic of the Switch, it's better than mobile games and almost on par with ps4 games... That midrange plus portability is a winning formular.
And it still runs smooth enough for me. Portability>graphics fidelity as long as it’s smooth to play, which it is... and Nintendo Switch is a game changer for adults with responsibilities. That’s what interested me in March, but I waited until Bovember to buy because of Doom and Skyrim on the go.
It’s so much better than I was expecting! I was really annoyed with Nintendo’s Switch Direct before it came out, so much so that I wasn’t going to buy it at all. It seemed they hadn’t learned anything from past mistakes and were trying to sell motion controls (again) and 1 2 Switch looked horrible. However after about 3 months of watching TH-cam Videos if people loving the console I caved and bought one. It was the best decision I have made in a long time. The first party games are astoundingly good and the 3rd party games I have bought are really good ports on what is essentially a handheld, and there are some absolute peaches when it comes to indie titles too. All of this on the go. I have two young daughters and I don’t have time (or I’m not allowed) to sit in front of the TV and game, but with the Switch I can sit and play what I want where I want while they watch TV. It’s great. They also love the Switch too especially 2 player Mario Kart and Splatoon.
Its dope fam Very dope Only have 2 games and it (zelda and fire emblem warriors) is a treat but at this rate my wallet would be wrecked soon. I still have interests in Mario, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, possibly Pokken Tournament. All of those games in less than a year? Jeez your wallet
After I bought the Wii and PS3 all those years ago, I have not bought another home console since, because of my changing life style (I also have a pretty decent PC that could handle the first Evil Within at max settings). I had to travel a lot and usually got home quite late, so my main choice of gaming was on the 3DS. I have skipped the Wii U and PS4 completely, as I know that I wouldn't have time to sit in front of a TV like I did in the past. Those days are long gone. I thought for sure that I would be playing portable games only from now on. But then the Switch came out and it does exactly what I wanted and more. It fits perfectly into my current life style. I can take games...big, full fledged games with me anywhere and play while I'm travelling, waiting for a friend, before going to bed, and of course, while in a toilet. I can play most games with motion controls (yes, I love motion controls!), I can play the games with separated controllers, which is the most comfortable way for me to play, and I can easily play games with my nieces thanks to the TV docking and shared Joy-Cons features. I had to give up quite a lot of my hobbies due to work and other changes in life, but I didn't want to give up gaming. Thanks to the Switch, I won't have to!
Why would I do that? I still play the Wii with my nieces from time to time (they especially love the Wii Sports Resort game), and besides, it would sell for very little (I saw one being sold in a second hand shop for £12!).
While the Joy-Con may not have the most ergonomic shape, the fact that I can place my arms in whatever positions make playing games much more comfortable. I can fully relax on the big couch and have my arms spread out while playing, not being restricted to holding my hands closely in front of me only. Sometimes I just feel like crossing my arms while playing (kinda like when you play a drum, I guess?) and I can still play the game just fine. The first time I've played the Wii, I've discovered just how comfortable it is to play games with separated controllers, and now it is even better since the Joy-Con are wireless. I've also been playing the 3DS for so many years, having my hands locked on the small console all those times, so it's really refreshing to be able to hold the Joy-Con wherever I like.
Andrew Caca The epic loading time though. I just took my PS3 out and plugged it in a few days ago and man this thing loads slow. I need a SSD to just shave off 2 seconds from the 64 second loading screens

Non-single adult here and wow; I feel the exact same way man, but almost afraid to even admit it to myself. I've always been a PC gamer, and it will always be my favorite platform. Lately though, Switch is getting like 90% of my gaming time and I'm not even entirely sure why. I mean sure, there are lots of great games flooding the market for it lately but there are also tons of things I want to play on Steam. And yet when I get home from work, I'm docking my Switch (which comes with me to work every day, even if I don't always have time to play with it) and instinctively reaching for the Pro Controller. Had my Switch since day one release, and I thought the novelty of having a new console would've begun wearing thin by now, but I'm finding the exact opposite is happening. I haven't even been stalking Steam for the Fall Sale, and that's something I've been doing religiously for years. What is happening?! Why am I playing vanilla Skyrim on my Switch and loving it when I've got heavily-modded-eye-popping-graphics-pro-performance Skyrim on my PC?!
The sleep mode is totally underrated. It's the biggest feature for me. It takes absolutely no time to pick up a controller, turn it on, and get to gaming right where you left off. For a busy adult, it makes it easy to squeeze in some gametime here and there. With other consoles, or the PC, you kinda have to be in the right mindset to start up a game. I dunno what it is.
You just described my life. I've been an avid Sony gamer for years, and yet my switch gets 90% of my playtime anymore. My switch goes everywhere for me. I play it on my lunch break maybe 10 minutes. I bring it home put it in the dock and play. I can't even fully explain why. The sleep button is so underrated. Being able to play seamlessly is so great. Also, the pro controller, is hands down the best controller on the market. The thing fits like a glove.
Agree with this, I use to sometimes avoid playing a game just because I didn't want to waste the time just to turn it on. Now its so easy to just grab my pro controller n jump into a game in under 5 seconds while my kiddo happens to leave the room for a minute haha
Because your a 'portable gamer,' you just never realized it. Its also the same reason why smartphones have the biggest and most profitable gaming market. A lot of people didn't realize how much they would love the portability.
+BJizzle321 Yeah that's definitely a huge factor, but I've always hated playing games on my phone lol. Even with the few games that I found somewhat entertaining, I would inevitably realize that I'd rather be checking my email or twitter or reading news or something. And considering the fact that I'm used to my gaming rig being hooked up to a 60" TV and surround sound system as it's been for the past few years, it's still kind of blowing my mind how little my enjoyment of a good game changes with the TV and speakers out of the equation. I seriously only pre-ordered the Switch because I was in the right place at the right time to get a hold of one, I knew they'd be in demand, figured I'd easily be able to pass it along second-hand when I got tired of it, and it looked like a neat little gadget. Now the damn thing is totally dominating every spare minute of my precious gaming time! I was going to build a new rig this year in preparation for Monster Hunter World, and I haven't even started shopping for parts yet (I'll get around to it)!

@@thenovaperson of course the switch is a way better console than the Wii, but that's not the point. The point is that the Wii was just a good console with amazing games. With the Switch, as all games should be with time, the games did what what Wii games did and then expanded upon them to make your gaming experience even better.

Everyone in my school got the wii a year after it launched, same with me when my parents let me get it cus theyre weird. I had to buy it myself too. Hard to get cash since they want me to have all my money put in a savings account which gets no money interest. A percent of a percent. They wanted me to play out side all the time. I learned THE HARD WAY what the word FORMAT means on my wii. Format deletes all data. I grew up without a smart phone but at the real birth of the internet. After dial up but before anything good. Technology will get better but life styles will decline. It has happened since before i was born and will continue. We're fucked. I spent the last hour reading blogs as to guessing why guys can't get dates anymore. We're fucked. The consencis is keep trying or give up. One guy says most women are lesbos. RStaR RaptoR Yeah, I got my Wii Christmas 2008 and I didn't get a smart phone until 2011. I do remember having dial-up quite vividly. Especially the parts where I would have to constantly reconnect because it would kick me off or when my mum had to make or receive a call. Or the fact that I had no patience to download games bigger than maybe 20MB because the internet was soooo slow!

Who made the original Game Boy a massive success? It wasn't kids. It was adults. Business travelers, who could finally have something to play on their long flights and commutes. That's what Nintendo forgot in their 16-Bit years of censorship and vigorously projecting and protecting a kid-friendly image. They kept thinking "it has to work for kids, it has to work for kids". Remember the purple lunch box that was the GameCube? I guarantee the people making the Switch the success that it is are not kids with their parents buying stuff for them, even though that's cool. It's adults like you who don't have time to sit in front of a TV all day or who are constantly on the move. It's that type of portability that makes even old games like Doom and Skyrim feel like new.

LOL Gamecube underrated? You have to be joking. Sales-wise, maybe. But the system was still pale in comparison to the Xbox and PS2 at the time. Gamecube is only remembered for Melee, and that game is a broken exploit. Not even close to GC's best but Smash fans are powerful ones lol
I hate, how because ppl bought the multiplat games mainly on the Ps2, they just assume that the Gamecube didn't also have many of the same games. It's another game history myth that needs to die. It's bullshit. Most multiplats were released across all 3 systems. Madden+2K sports, Nfs, Tony Hawk, Def Jam, Dbz, Metal Arms, Spiderman and other marvel games, Call of Duty, Sonic, Crazy Taxi + plus other Dreamcast ports like Ikaruga, Medal of Honor, Timesplitters, Viewiful Joe, Turok Evol, Ssx, Splinter Cell, Resident Evil, Xtreme G, Soulcalibur, Mortal Kombat, Spyhunter, Beyond Good and Evil plus plenty others and a decent handful of exclusive 3rd party. Its in a different league than 64/Wii/Wii u yet it gets ignored due to its low system/software sales. Kill the myth

Remlows well yeah, but never as portable as the switch. I have a pretty good laptop which is great for college since i can bring games to the library, use my pc in the car, easily transition between home and college without leaving all my games, etc. But when I'm playing something like Witcher 3, or doom, or whatever, my battery life is less than an hour. You can't game on the go without a mouse or a power supply, in general. You can't use it for gaming before bed unless you're using lowres indie games, snes emulators or willing to melt your legs.
Ioannis Stf i only liked the psp but ds and 3ds were a lot better maybe not in specs but a lot better with innovation and game library! Sony just have to accept that they will never beat nintendo in the handheld market.
Fun is being able to play almost all games with the platform you chose. And from what I see of the Switch, that's literally impossible. I checked all the games I own on my PC and PS4 Pro and checked which ones have a Switch port. Only Skyrim. Plus, without it's mods that even the Xbox and PS4 offer. What guarantees would I have with that expensive console that has 360 graphics, access to first party titles and a few... only a few, third party games? When I get a system to play, I want to see games on my platform and on the Switch, not only I would spend my time hoping for ports but it's also a system that doesn't give me any trust. Unless, all I care about is Mario and Zelda.

I'm from Houston and that hurricane fucked up our school semester, my A&P II class is always behind due to time constraints. If it wasn't for the Switch portability I wouldn't even had gamed this fall. More importantly it just works as a proper gaming console rather than a gimmick.
Wish I could play Catherine on the PS4 without having to use that PS Now bullshit. -_- It's either hook up my PS3 OR hope Nintendo does a port of Catherine for the Switch. lol

Kudos to recognizing your son as your top priority. The positive reinforcement you'll instill in him by being there will allow him to have the same "happy and nostalgic" moments you cherished growing up. Hands down favorite console, and best $400 I have spent, I mostly use it docked, however I loved taking it on vacation , I took dock and all, just cause I could, but My favorite part while using it, was on the airplane it's 6 hour flight, with a good, 3-4 hrs of window for gaming, but that's not the best part, the best part was We booked the tickets, so My niece could play Mario Kart, or Minecraft with Uncle : D

The online service is trash and the switch lacks basic features that the wii u had like an internet browser, virtual console, eshop being more lively. I love my switch and all, but we can't just ignore the fact that it has some MAJOR flaws.

I remember preferring the PS1 and 2 over Nintendo's consoles, but I didn't take it as personally. I assumed Nintendo had its audience and I had moved on. And I certainly never attacked people for liking Nintendo, and nobody hated on me for playing PlayStation. That, too me, seems incredibly silly.
Back then in the N64 and PS1 era, there were just too many good games on both consoles. Then PS2 and GameCube was the same in that regard, only PS2 had far more good games. Not that the cube had bad ones but there were maybe 10-15, vs the PS2's 50+. In fact my favorite game of all time is on GameCube but PS2 was definitely a clear winner. Those were the good days.
You have a point, as a kid I played mystic quest a lot but my main memory of that game was coming home from school with my mom and dad, it was mid December and it was snowing with all the Xmas decorations in people's windows. When I got home I put mystic quest on straight away and for some reason that normal school day has always felt special.
Love that anecdote, reminds me of a few similar ones with the SNES, N64 etc. There's something about Christmas that makes games just a little bit more special.
I bought a PS4 when Last of Us remastered was released and was gearing up to play Destiny as I thought that game would be the game that took over my life, but I quickly grew bored and I stopped playing after a month or so. From then on my PS4 didn’t really “Wow” me as much as I was hoping for and most games either disappointed or were just good. My first 7 months with the Switch so far have not only been better than my first whole year with a PS4 but some of my most favourite gaming experiences in general. The Switch caters to my lifestyle and has a collection of high quality games that continue to impress, love gaming on my PC up I can’t take that with me on a 5 hour train trip this weekend, but my Switch, the recently released Skyrim Switch and a Power Bank can. Love the Switch, it is slowly becom8ng one of my favourite consoles as well.

I've always hated the name "NX". That didn't sound like the name of a gaming console, but more like some sort of a chemical, or like a name of a bolt that you see from the instructions of how to build furniture from raw materials. I very much prefer "Switch" instead.
I love the Nintendo Switch, but let's be honest, they need to improve on some things. How in 2017 we can have an online-connected media device that doesn't support Netflix, TH-cam, Hulu, etc. is beyond me. Also, cloud saves are a must too. The fact that I still enjoy the system so much without these basic features is saying a lot, but they'd be nice to have for sure.

Love my Switch! I own ps4 too but as a busy working parent to a Switch ticks all the boxes. Gameplay is more important than having 4K graphics hence why Switch is doing well. All the haters are just naive!

I agree. I also love the Nintendo switch. Being an adult, it is easier for me to game on portables. Because of that, I also loved my 3ds, but I also missed playing on a big screen from time to time. The switch changed that and the fact that it offers more triple a games makes it unique as a portable.

Updating their systems every 3 years to try to keep up with graphics (equivalent of mid or mid-high settings at best), having a browser and apps like YT, Amazon, Twitch, Netflix, etc, more expensive games, limited backward compatibility and paying for online lol. Sounds like a failed attempt of a PC. The only somewhat fair reason to buy a console is if you're a REAL die hard fan of a PS exclusive, that's it.

The gamecube was pretty powerful, actually. It wasn't quite Xbox, but it was leagues ahead of the ps2 as far as graphics.....but those mini discs........why?!

Nintendo finally got it right with the Nintendo Switch. They are officially back in action, I myself was skeptical and didn't find the idea good at the time. I myself feel the same way you feel. I'm getting a Switch through layaway and and possibly another one for my family to play together. I was going to get the Xbox One X. But right now it's the best time to get a Switch and I already have an Xbox.

It’s a great system... however I still think it is missing some features software wise (internet browser, netflix, youtube, more customization in the options menu) and a few hardware features (microphone and camera). The Wii U had these things, and even the 3DS did too. These features were great and it’s a shame that they weren’t passed over to the Switch, as it would open up for potential ports from other system as well (many handheld Nintendo games required a camera/microphone to work, as well as the Wii U).

with game consoles its not all about power its about what you can do with the device and the Nintendo switch holds a very important role in the gaming industry right now as the single console on the market today that can play a AAA game on the go. it has acceptable battery life and within its first year of being on the market it already has 3 giant first party games and a smattering of third party games that are all just great for long flights or train rides. and since its charging requires USB-C you can charge the console on the go no problem. yeah its not as powerful as almost every other console on the market but then again it doesn't need to be. that not the focal point of this product. this is portable, your PS4 and xbox one is not! and thats where this product undeniably shines and it shows a bright future for Nintendo. as time goes on and we can make more powerful chips that are less power hungry. Nintendo will make successors to this console and eventually as time goes on we will get a ps4 experience on the go. this is a great step in an exciting direction.
Chris Hooper a PS4 on the go that plays AAA well would be nice but people already hate them for copying Nintendo's creativity so a hybrid playstation would get hate for that. Would be cool but the hate is inevitable if they do it.
@LoyalT1987 The Vita failed because Sony basically abandoned the platform and a lot of their equivalent games felt watered down compared to it's home console counterpart. The Switch succeeds because the titles made for it feel like wholly made games and not watered down. Helps that the Switch is a hybrid console though. Though to be fair, the Vita is still a bit nicer to handle imho. Still neat to see that it still has a cult following behind it.
Funny how it's been 9 months since launch and sold over 10 million units. You could throw children into the mix and call it a valid argument all you want, but you can't deny greatness. Lmao I've tried my absolute hardest to convince myself that a hybrid console would be a gimmick but tbh, Nintendo has out done themselves with the switch. You spoke a whole lot of sense man. As a new Dad and as someone who took a hit on gaming because of life / work commitments I am in love with the Switch. I am a Nintendo fan of old but didn’t have the WiiU got bored of my Wii and didn’t use my game cube (could have been just the time in my life) but loved Nintendo dude to my SNES / N64 and 80s gameboy. I had a Dreamcast which I loved and Xbox and PS3/4. But as the years went on I played less and less and it’s a shame. Now I am back. And I love my Switch. I have a ton of games and I am excited. The Switch gave me my hobby back.
I would agree. I got a nintendo switch for christmas. I own a PC, Xbox, Play Station, and Switch now. And since christmas (when I got my switch), I’ve put more time into my switch than the other 3 combined.
I used to play playstation, big playstation fan, PS3, ps4 etc and since I got the switch I haven't touched my playstation, it is my favourite console of all time and you can have the biggest games come out on any other console and I will still play switch because its a better way to play for me
I got a 1 year old and 3 year old. I feel you on how the switch finally allowed me to game again. I have all the systems too but the only way I can play is with the kids sleeping in my arms and playing the switch while the wife watches TV.
I second this. It sucks when I have to turn the PS4 off for her to watch TV. So the switch is a no brainer not even worried about playing it on tv lol even more reason why I prefer it even without having a trophy or achievement system and why I probably will go back to also playing emulators on Android alongside playing switch

I resonated with your comment about the child. This is the exact same reason why I got the Switch. I used to be a core gamer but now with two kids, this ain't possible. My PS4 and PC are dust collectors, and this will not change for couple of years. Switch gives me enough freedom to start and pause a game any time I want/can. I can still enjoy proper gaming. The only thing I wish the Switch had was a better battery life. I absolutely love the Switch, currently playing Skyrim, Rocket League and Mario Odyssey it’s so good but please sort out the battery :(
I picked up an Anker powerbank 20000mah w/Qualcomm fast charge & a USB-USBC cord. I get 4-6 charges on my switch before it's drained. The powerbank can be found for 30-50.
I disagree Wii has Mario cart Wii resident evil 4 Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 as you said, smash brawl, Castlevania as you said, Mario Bros Wii, skyward sword, twilight princess, Punchout, etc. The motion controls may suck but it's still an overall good console just my opinion no h8 plz. I just think you missed a lot of really good games. ;-;
Punchout Wii exemplified the problems with the Wii. It feels cheap, like a budget game you would buy on steam for $20-30. A good budget game, to be sure, but they tried to sell it as a $60 AAA game and it was from it.
If you are arguing Nintendo needs to add features to their online service (such as party chat, text messaging, etc), I get you. But as a service that allows you to play games with others online it's quite good. I've had more issues with my Xbox One regarding online play than I've had with my Switch or Wii U for that matter.
im 25 going on 26 and the statements about responsibilities and wanting to go back just for 20 mins is so spot on dude, i just got a switch for xmas yesterday was going down and looking at all the indie games coming out and exploring options that are games that couldve been on the snes or something of the sort from my childhood and being able to pick them up for 20 mins or so and relaxing. looking forward to megaman 11 and dragon quest 11 as well.
Just wait until Nintendo gets its virtual console on the switch. Portable Majora's Mask. Portable Melee/Smash64 (maybe with an AD HOC method for linking switches together?! otherwise this would be useless). Portable Pokemon emerald (my favorite Pokemon). Link to the past etc. But there's so much more potential beyond that; Nintendo switch could also support blizzard games like over watch and hearthstone, Heros of the Storm, etc. These would be perfect for the console. Civ games and other rts games would run fantastically on the switch because of the touch screen. On PS4/Xbox you need to control a cursor with a thumb stick which is clunky. Games like torchlight and diablo would make fantastic ports. Because the switch is lower power, high graphical AAA games dont cloud the device's game market. Indie games are very satisfying on this device. Playing some lower graphic games like shovel knight on the TV doesn't feel right, however in portable mode this retro style game really shines. A game like terraria would be a hit on the switch. Also cuphead really needs to get a port! All the switch needs is a decent first person shooter multiplayer. I think if they can get destiny/COD/BF/etc onto the switch that would be amazing. If they can implement all that potential I'll say the switch is the best console ever. The only thing xbox and playstation have going for them is raw power, that is all. These consoles dont really do anything, and I would rather play 3rd party on PC. However on the switch theres actually motivation for me to play 3rd party games on it.

Nintendo's been really obscure about it. and I disagree. there's great fun to be had on the other consoles. the ps4 and Xbox have really good first party as well and they're not ALL about graphics. that would be the PC and to some extent the Xbox one x. and to be honest you're expecting a little too much. the switch is great already for what it is. and I'm happy with that.
I bought the switch at launch and I watched this video when you first posted it, and I felt the same way then, as I do now. You hit the nail on the head. I love my switch, not because it gets the most graphically powerful games, but because it has allowed me to continue playing games. Real games. I am 33, I have a wife, I work 7 days a week, I have bills and responsibilities, I basically spend my whole life working to support my family. The switch has given me a viable way to continue enjoying a hobby that I otherwise would have lost. The fact that I can play true aaa quality games in the 30 minutes I have sitting in my car in the parking lot at work, honestly, keeps me sane and provides me that moment of escapism everyone needs.

I'm a 27 year old business owner. No kids (yet) but I'm constantly traveling and on the move. The days of siting for hours in front of a TV are long gone for me. I skipped the Wii U gen(no console since 2008) and I'm happy to say that the Switch has brought me back to gaming. I've never played Doom and was happy to get it. The Switch is just so much more convenient for me to play games on. Currently have Doom, Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids, Zelda BOTW, Street Fighter 2, Splatoon, and a received Skyrim which I have never played either. Nintendo's product in genius and exactly what I need for my lifestyle. Great Video Rich, keep up the amazing work!

It could also be that the Switch is more compatible with my age.. With two little ones even when I have downtime I'm not sequestered away in front of a television - much easier to have a portable system to play on for the brief moments when I'm not needed.

I've never doubted the Switch. I'm one of those people who are "aware" of the downgraded graphics because obviously the Switch is a Tablet. But the "potential" and the "innovation" of having a Triple Ayyyy Games on the GO wherever you GO, man that's unique and very different from Sony and Microsoft.
I also saw that if the Switch succeeded from the 3rd party support, chances of having a PSP Switch or XBox Switch from those 2 companies, they're already left behind.
Nintendo can ramp up a Nintendo Switch V2 but with a better hardware.

I have 5 friends that bought the Switch, 35+ y/o, 4 of them have kids. Amazingly, for these 4 friends, with kids, this is the first console in a while. For one of them, his first console, period. The rest had NES. SNES, maybe ps2.
I asked them why Switch? Why having now a console, after many, many years without gaming (or maybe, just phone games)
They saw Zelda, they saw ads, with Zelda. And the console looks great. Looks fun.

I take care of my parents, who are in bad health, full time and the only time I had to game was after they go to bed. The problem with that is by the time they go to bed I'm exhausted and just don't want to play any games. With the Switch, I've been able to play games during the day between taking care of my parents and I've probably gamed more in the last two weeks since getting the Switch than I have in the previous 6 months.

What makes the switch unique is that its portable. It represents where console gaming is probably going to end up going as mobile chip sets continue to get better and better.
The ARM processor is much more efficient than AMDs x64. And ARM is starting to close the performance gap. ARM is build on a simplistic design with a low amount of instructions.
Nvidia is has been investing a lot into mobile graphics. The GPU in the Nintendo switch is an older Tegra X1. The TX2 is much more powerful has been out for a while. The code name "Xavier" chip is going to be released soon. Its a 512 core GPU, 8 core ARM. Its going to be comparable in power to the gpu inside the current gen consoles.
Doom is also the reason I bought the Switch, and I'm also a working father with no time... This is the magic of the Switch, it's better than mobile games and almost on par with ps4 games... That midrange plus portability is a winning formular.

It’s so much better than I was expecting! I was really annoyed with Nintendo’s Switch Direct before it came out, so much so that I wasn’t going to buy it at all. It seemed they hadn’t learned anything from past mistakes and were trying to sell motion controls (again) and 1 2 Switch looked horrible. However after about 3 months of watching TH-cam Videos if people loving the console I caved and bought one. It was the best decision I have made in a long time. The first party games are astoundingly good and the 3rd party games I have bought are really good ports on what is essentially a handheld, and there are some absolute peaches when it comes to indie titles too. All of this on the go. I have two young daughters and I don’t have time (or I’m not allowed) to sit in front of the TV and game, but with the Switch I can sit and play what I want where I want while they watch TV. It’s great. They also love the Switch too especially 2 player Mario Kart and Splatoon.
Do it. Support the console and get more games like Doom to come to it. I play that game everywhere

After I bought the Wii and PS3 all those years ago, I have not bought another home console since, because of my changing life style (I also have a pretty decent PC that could handle the first Evil Within at max settings). I had to travel a lot and usually got home quite late, so my main choice of gaming was on the 3DS. I have skipped the Wii U and PS4 completely, as I know that I wouldn't have time to sit in front of a TV like I did in the past. Those days are long gone.
I thought for sure that I would be playing portable games only from now on. But then the Switch came out and it does exactly what I wanted and more. It fits perfectly into my current life style. I can take games...big, full fledged games with me anywhere and play while I'm travelling, waiting for a friend, before going to bed, and of course, while in a toilet. I can play most games with motion controls (yes, I love motion controls!), I can play the games with separated controllers, which is the most comfortable way for me to play, and I can easily play games with my nieces thanks to the TV docking and shared Joy-Cons features.
I had to give up quite a lot of my hobbies due to work and other changes in life, but I didn't want to give up gaming. Thanks to the Switch, I won't have to!

Why would I do that? I still play the Wii with my nieces from time to time (they especially love the Wii Sports Resort game), and besides, it would sell for very little (I saw one being sold in a second hand shop for £12!).
While the Joy-Con may not have the most ergonomic shape, the fact that I can place my arms in whatever positions make playing games much more comfortable. I can fully relax on the big couch and have my arms spread out while playing, not being restricted to holding my hands closely in front of me only. Sometimes I just feel like crossing my arms while playing (kinda like when you play a drum, I guess?) and I can still play the game just fine.
The first time I've played the Wii, I've discovered just how comfortable it is to play games with separated controllers, and now it is even better since the Joy-Con are wireless. I've also been playing the 3DS for so many years, having my hands locked on the small console all those times, so it's really refreshing to be able to hold the Joy-Con wherever I like.

Non-single adult here and wow; I feel the exact same way man, but almost afraid to even admit it to myself. I've always been a PC gamer, and it will always be my favorite platform. Lately though, Switch is getting like 90% of my gaming time and I'm not even entirely sure why. I mean sure, there are lots of great games flooding the market for it lately but there are also tons of things I want to play on Steam. And yet when I get home from work, I'm docking my Switch (which comes with me to work every day, even if I don't always have time to play with it) and instinctively reaching for the Pro Controller.
Had my Switch since day one release, and I thought the novelty of having a new console would've begun wearing thin by now, but I'm finding the exact opposite is happening. I haven't even been stalking Steam for the Fall Sale, and that's something I've been doing religiously for years. What is happening?! Why am I playing vanilla Skyrim on my Switch and loving it when I've got heavily-modded-eye-popping-graphics-pro-performance Skyrim on my PC?!
The sleep mode is totally underrated. It's the biggest feature for me. It takes absolutely no time to pick up a controller, turn it on, and get to gaming right where you left off. For a busy adult, it makes it easy to squeeze in some gametime here and there. With other consoles, or the PC, you kinda have to be in the right mindset to start up a game. I dunno what it is.
You just described my life. I've been an avid Sony gamer for years, and yet my switch gets 90% of my playtime anymore. My switch goes everywhere for me. I play it on my lunch break maybe 10 minutes. I bring it home put it in the dock and play. I can't even fully explain why. The sleep button is so underrated. Being able to play seamlessly is so great. Also, the pro controller, is hands down the best controller on the market. The thing fits like a glove.
Agree with this, I use to sometimes avoid playing a game just because I didn't want to waste the time just to turn it on. Now its so easy to just grab my pro controller n jump into a game in under 5 seconds while my kiddo happens to leave the room for a minute haha
Because your a 'portable gamer,' you just never realized it. Its also the same reason why smartphones have the biggest and most profitable gaming market. A lot of people didn't realize how much they would love the portability.
+BJizzle321 Yeah that's definitely a huge factor, but I've always hated playing games on my phone lol. Even with the few games that I found somewhat entertaining, I would inevitably realize that I'd rather be checking my email or twitter or reading news or something. And considering the fact that I'm used to my gaming rig being hooked up to a 60" TV and surround sound system as it's been for the past few years, it's still kind of blowing my mind how little my enjoyment of a good game changes with the TV and speakers out of the equation.
I seriously only pre-ordered the Switch because I was in the right place at the right time to get a hold of one, I knew they'd be in demand, figured I'd easily be able to pass it along second-hand when I got tired of it, and it looked like a neat little gadget. Now the damn thing is totally dominating every spare minute of my precious gaming time! I was going to build a new rig this year in preparation for Monster Hunter World, and I haven't even started shopping for parts yet (I'll get around to it)!

Everyone in my school got the wii a year after it launched, same with me when my parents let me get it cus theyre weird. I had to buy it myself too. Hard to get cash since they want me to have all my money put in a savings account which gets no money interest. A percent of a percent. They wanted me to play out side all the time. I learned THE HARD WAY what the word FORMAT means on my wii. Format deletes all data. I grew up without a smart phone but at the real birth of the internet. After dial up but before anything good. Technology will get better but life styles will decline. It has happened since before i was born and will continue. We're fucked.

Especially the parts where I would have to constantly reconnect because it would kick me off or when my mum had to make or receive a call. Who made the original Game Boy a massive success? It wasn't kids. It was adults. Business travelers, who could finally have something to play on their long flights and commutes. That's what Nintendo forgot in their 16-Bit years of censorship and vigorously projecting and protecting a kid-friendly image. They kept thinking "it has to work for kids, it has to work for kids". Remember the purple lunch box that was the GameCube? I guarantee the people making the Switch the success that it is are not kids with their parents buying stuff for them, even though that's cool. It's adults like you who don't have time to sit in front of a TV all day or who are constantly on the move. It's that type of portability that makes even old games like Doom and Skyrim feel like new.

GameCube was a great system. Super underrated. Hardware was better than PS2. 3rd party support was the Achilles heel (as usual).

Madden+2K sports, Nfs, Tony Hawk, Def Jam, Dbz, Metal Arms, Spiderman and other marvel games, Call of Duty, Sonic, Crazy Taxi + plus other Dreamcast ports like Ikaruga, Medal of Honor, Timesplitters, Viewiful Joe, Turok Evol, Ssx, Splinter Cell, Resident Evil, Xtreme G, Soulcalibur, Mortal Kombat, Spyhunter, Beyond Good and Evil plus plenty others and a decent handful of exclusive 3rd party.
Its in a different league than 64/Wii/Wii u yet it gets ignored due to its low system/software sales. Kill the myth

Remlows well yeah, but never as portable as the switch. I have a pretty good laptop which is great for college since i can bring games to the library, use my pc in the car, easily transition between home and college without leaving all my games, etc. But when I'm playing something like Witcher 3, or doom, or whatever, my battery life is less than an hour. You can't game on the go without a mouse or a power supply, in general. You can't use it for gaming before bed unless you're using lowres indie games, snes emulators or willing to melt your legs.

Fun is being able to play almost all games with the platform you chose. And from what I see of the Switch, that's literally impossible. I checked all the games I own on my PC and PS4 Pro and checked which ones have a Switch port. Only Skyrim. Plus, without it's mods that even the Xbox and PS4 offer. What guarantees would I have with that expensive console that has 360 graphics, access to first party titles and a few... only a few, third party games? When I get a system to play, I want to see games on my platform and on the Switch, not only I would spend my time hoping for ports but it's also a system that doesn't give me any trust. Unless, all I care about is Mario and Zelda.
Framerate issues can get in the way of fun, though. The other characteristics are being vastly overblown, though.

I'm from Houston and that hurricane fucked up our school semester, my A&P II class is always behind due to time constraints. If it wasn't for the Switch portability I wouldn't even had gamed this fall. More importantly it just works as a proper gaming console rather than a gimmick.

Hands down favorite console, and best $400 I have spent, I mostly use it docked, however I loved taking it on vacation , I took dock and all, just cause I could, but My favorite part while using it, was on the airplane it's 6 hour flight, with a good, 3-4 hrs of window for gaming, but that's not the best part, the best part was We booked the tickets, so My niece could play Mario Kart, or Minecraft with Uncle : D

The online service is trash and the switch lacks basic features that the wii u had like an internet browser, virtual console, eshop being more lively. I love my switch and all, but we can't just ignore the fact that it has some MAJOR flaws.

Back then in the N64 and PS1 era, there were just too many good games on both consoles. Then PS2 and GameCube was the same in that regard, only PS2 had far more good games. Not that the cube had bad ones but there were maybe 10-15, vs the PS2's 50+. In fact my favorite game of all time is on GameCube but PS2 was definitely a clear winner.

You have a point, as a kid I played mystic quest a lot but my main memory of that game was coming home from school with my mom and dad, it was mid December and it was snowing with all the Xmas decorations in people's windows.
When I got home I put mystic quest on straight away and for some reason that normal school day has always felt special.
Love that anecdote, reminds me of a few similar ones with the SNES, N64 etc. There's something about Christmas that makes games just a little bit more special.
I bought a PS4 when Last of Us remastered was released and was gearing up to play Destiny as I thought that game would be the game that took over my life, but I quickly grew bored and I stopped playing after a month or so. From then on my PS4 didn’t really “Wow” me as much as I was hoping for and most games either disappointed or were just good. My first 7 months with the Switch so far have not only been better than my first whole year with a PS4 but some of my most favourite gaming experiences in general. The Switch caters to my lifestyle and has a collection of high quality games that continue to impress, love gaming on my PC up I can’t take that with me on a 5 hour train trip this weekend, but my Switch, the recently released Skyrim Switch and a Power Bank can. Love the Switch, it is slowly becom8ng one of my favourite consoles as well.

I've always hated the name "NX". That didn't sound like the name of a gaming console, but more like some sort of a chemical, or like a name of a bolt that you see from the instructions of how to build furniture from raw materials. I very much prefer "Switch" instead.

I love the Nintendo Switch, but let's be honest, they need to improve on some things. How in 2017 we can have an online-connected media device that doesn't support Netflix, TH-cam, Hulu, etc. is beyond me. Also, cloud saves are a must too. The fact that I still enjoy the system so much without these basic features is saying a lot, but they'd be nice to have for sure.

I agree. I also love the Nintendo switch. Being an adult, it is easier for me to game on portables. Because of that, I also loved my 3ds, but I also missed playing on a big screen from time to time. The switch changed that and the fact that it offers more triple a games makes it unique as a portable.

Updating their systems every 3 years to try to keep up with graphics (equivalent of mid or mid-high settings at best), having a browser and apps like YT, Amazon, Twitch, Netflix, etc, more expensive games, limited backward compatibility and paying for online lol. Sounds like a failed attempt of a PC. The only somewhat fair reason to buy a console is if you're a REAL die hard fan of a PS exclusive, that's it.

Nintendo finally got it right with the Nintendo Switch. They are officially back in action, I myself was skeptical and didn't find the idea good at the time. I myself feel the same way you feel. I'm getting a Switch through layaway and and possibly another one for my family to play together. I was going to get the Xbox One X. But right now it's the best time to get a Switch and I already have an Xbox.

It’s a great system... however I still think it is missing some features software wise (internet browser, netflix, youtube, more customization in the options menu) and a few hardware features (microphone and camera). The Wii U had these things, and even the 3DS did too. These features were great and it’s a shame that they weren’t passed over to the Switch, as it would open up for potential ports from other system as well (many handheld Nintendo games required a camera/microphone to work, as well as the Wii U).

Every time they implemented an Internet browser, it was used to exploit and hack the system. No wonder they would be sceptical to add it on the Switch.

with game consoles its not all about power its about what you can do with the device and the Nintendo switch holds a very important role in the gaming industry right now as the single console on the market today that can play a AAA game on the go. it has acceptable battery life and within its first year of being on the market it already has 3 giant first party games and a smattering of third party games that are all just great for long flights or train rides. and since its charging requires USB-C you can charge the console on the go no problem. yeah its not as powerful as almost every other console on the market but then again it doesn't need to be. that not the focal point of this product. this is portable, your PS4 and xbox one is not! and thats where this product undeniably shines and it shows a bright future for Nintendo. as time goes on and we can make more powerful chips that are less power hungry. Nintendo will make successors to this console and eventually as time goes on we will get a ps4 experience on the go. this is a great step in an exciting direction.
Chris Hooper a PS4 on the go that plays AAA well would be nice but people already hate them for copying Nintendo's creativity so a hybrid playstation would get hate for that. Would be cool but the hate is inevitable if they do it.
@LoyalT1987 The Vita failed because Sony basically abandoned the platform and a lot of their equivalent games felt watered down compared to it's home console counterpart.
The Switch succeeds because the titles made for it feel like wholly made games and not watered down. Helps that the Switch is a hybrid console though.
Though to be fair, the Vita is still a bit nicer to handle imho. Still neat to see that it still has a cult following behind it.

Funny how it's been 9 months since launch and sold over 10 million units. You could throw children into the mix and call it a valid argument all you want, but you can't deny greatness. Lmao I've tried my absolute hardest to convince myself that a hybrid console would be a gimmick but tbh, Nintendo has out done themselves with the switch. Of course theres a compromise between power and versatility, but don't knock the hustle. The Nintendo switch is an absolute hit imo! :)

You spoke a whole lot of sense man. As a new Dad and as someone who took a hit on gaming because of life / work commitments I am in love with the Switch. I am a Nintendo fan of old but didn’t have the WiiU got bored of my Wii and didn’t use my game cube (could have been just the time in my life) but loved Nintendo dude to my SNES / N64 and 80s gameboy. I had a Dreamcast which I loved and Xbox and PS3/4. But as the years went on I played less and less and it’s a shame. Now I am back. And I love my Switch. I have a ton of games and I am excited. The Switch gave me my hobby back.

I would agree. I got a nintendo switch for christmas. I own a PC, Xbox, Play Station, and Switch now. And since christmas (when I got my switch), I’ve put more time into my switch than the other 3 combined.
I used to play playstation, big playstation fan, PS3, ps4 etc and since I got the switch I haven't touched my playstation, it is my favourite console of all time and you can have the biggest games come out on any other console and I will still play switch because its a better way to play for me

I got a 1 year old and 3 year old. I feel you on how the switch finally allowed me to game again. I have all the systems too but the only way I can play is with the kids sleeping in my arms and playing the switch while the wife watches TV.
I second this. It sucks when I have to turn the PS4 off for her to watch TV. So the switch is a no brainer not even worried about playing it on tv lol even more reason why I prefer it even without having a trophy or achievement system and why I probably will go back to also playing emulators on Android alongside playing switch

I resonated with your comment about the child. This is the exact same reason why I got the Switch. I used to be a core gamer but now with two kids, this ain't possible. My PS4 and PC are dust collectors, and this will not change for couple of years. Switch gives me enough freedom to start and pause a game any time I want/can. I can still enjoy proper gaming. Thanks Nintendo and 3rd party developers!
The only thing I wish the Switch had was a better battery life. I absolutely love the Switch, currently playing Skyrim, Rocket League and Mario Odyssey it’s so good but please sort out the battery :(

I disagree Wii has Mario cart Wii resident evil 4 Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 as you said, smash brawl, Castlevania as you said, Mario Bros Wii, skyward sword, twilight princess, Punchout, etc. The motion controls may suck but it's still an overall good console just my opinion no h8 plz. I just think you missed a lot of really good games. ;-;

Punchout Wii exemplified the problems with the Wii. It feels cheap, like a budget game you would buy on steam for $20-30. A good budget game, to be sure, but they tried to sell it as a $60 AAA game and it was from it.

If you are arguing Nintendo needs to add features to their online service (such as party chat, text messaging, etc), I get you. But as a service that allows you to play games with others online it's quite good. I've had more issues with my Xbox One regarding online play than I've had with my Switch or Wii U for that matter.

im 25 going on 26 and the statements about responsibilities and wanting to go back just for 20 mins is so spot on dude, i just got a switch for xmas yesterday was going down and looking at all the indie games coming out and exploring options that are games that couldve been on the snes or something of the sort from my childhood and being able to pick them up for 20 mins or so and relaxing. looking forward to megaman 11 and dragon quest 11 as well.
Just wait until Nintendo gets its virtual console on the switch.
Portable Majora's Mask. Portable Melee/Smash64 (maybe with an AD HOC method for linking switches together?! otherwise this would be useless). Portable Pokemon emerald (my favorite Pokemon). Link to the past etc.
But there's so much more potential beyond that;
Nintendo switch could also support blizzard games like over watch and hearthstone, Heros of the Storm, etc. These would be perfect for the console.
Civ games and other rts games would run fantastically on the switch because of the touch screen. On PS4/Xbox you need to control a cursor with a thumb stick which is clunky.
Games like torchlight and diablo would make fantastic ports.
Because the switch is lower power, high graphical AAA games dont cloud the device's game market. Indie games are very satisfying on this device. Playing some lower graphic games like shovel knight on the TV doesn't feel right, however in portable mode this retro style game really shines. A game like terraria would be a hit on the switch. Also cuphead really needs to get a port!
All the switch needs is a decent first person shooter multiplayer. I think if they can get destiny/COD/BF/etc onto the switch that would be amazing.
If they can implement all that potential I'll say the switch is the best console ever. The only thing xbox and playstation have going for them is raw power, that is all. These consoles dont really do anything, and I would rather play 3rd party on PC. However on the switch theres actually motivation for me to play 3rd party games on it.
Eric Cartman don't be so sure virtual console ever hits the switch. Nintendo's been really obscure about it. and I disagree. there's great fun to be had on the other consoles. the ps4 and Xbox have really good first party as well and they're not ALL about graphics. that would be the PC and to some extent the Xbox one x. and to be honest you're expecting a little too much. the switch is great already for what it is. and I'm happy with that.

I bought the switch at launch and I watched this video when you first posted it, and I felt the same way then, as I do now. You hit the nail on the head. I love my switch, not because it gets the most graphically powerful games, but because it has allowed me to continue playing games. Real games. I am 33, I have a wife, I work 7 days a week, I have bills and responsibilities, I basically spend my whole life working to support my family. The switch has given me a viable way to continue enjoying a hobby that I otherwise would have lost. The fact that I can play true aaa quality games in the 30 minutes I have sitting in my car in the parking lot at work, honestly, keeps me sane and provides me that moment of escapism everyone needs.
I'm a PC gamer and the switch is my favourite as well. It's the only console that I feel respects me, if that makes sense.
