I don't think the Deck will ever take down the Switch because there are absolutely tons of people who just straight up don't want anything to do with PC gaming since they're used to consoles.
Plus there's tons of kids who want to play Nintendo games that obviously shouldn't be given an expensive Steam Deck.
But personally? I'm never touching another Switch again. Steam Deck is everything I've ever wanted in a handheld system. Especially with the use of emulators, it can play every one of my favourite games on the go.
Even games I've developed myself can be played on it.

The steam deck essentially IS the switch pro to me. The backwards compatibility with your current library, stronger tech stuff and free online of the deck makes it vastly more desirable than the switch today.

I think a big aspect of the Deck that appeals to me is that it doesn't limit itself, if I want to consume music and video entertainment I can.
Most the time when I'm out I end up not using my Switch in favour of listening to music or watching vids.
I remember how many people were against the Switch getting TH-cam which I found baffling.

The only thing I worry about for the steam deck is the distinct lack of advertising on platforms, which is important for the consumers as they gain the knowledge of its existence. The Switch still sells abunch because of their advertising, making it look like it’s the only competitor in the portable console category.

Steam is their advertising, the majority of the time (not right now because the Steam summer sale is running) there's a small banner ad for the Steam Deck on the front page of Steam. I get the feeling that other than that they don't really care, they want to appeal to the PC gaming market that they already appeal to

Playstation and xbox can benefit from the success of the steam deck cus people will buy their games on steam to play on the go. It's a win for everyone except nintendo.

  • @The_Death_Owl
    @The_Death_Owl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +221

The main draw to Nintendo platforms is their IP and platform specific features like motion controls so as long as they remain exclusive I don't see how it would make the switch irrelevant to the average consumer.
The audience for the steam deck are all enthusiasts who want to further leverage steam but as a mobile platform. There is some crossover there but Nintendo will always hold something back to justify their own platform.

The beauty of the steam deck is the freedom it offers, the freedom that PC & Linux offers. If you wanted to have an equivalent feature set on a console you’d have to jailbreak it, with this it just works out of the box. Play emulated games, play PC games, play movies and music you have downloaded, and do all of this while still being able to play online without getting banned, and without having to pay to play online. The steam deck is the best thing other than desktop PC’s.

The Steam Deck allows me to play the games I've already paid for but now on the go, and because of Steam's Cloud Saves I'm able to pick up right where I left off from my PC, and pick it right back up again once I'm back in front of it.
Nintendo meanwhile wants to charge you monthly for the "feature" of cloud saves and wants full price again for all those games you've already bought on their last generation consoles.
Meanwhile I'm having a better experience playing Nintendo games on my Steam Deck thanks to emulation.

I’ve been loving listening to your videos about the Deck while I drive to work in the morning and totally agree with your sentiments. The Switch excited me so much when I saw one of my buddies playing DOOM 2016 and realized how revolutionary of a device it is. I don’t see the Deck as fighting the Switch as much as it is taking the next steps on the journey the Switch started.
I’m so heavily invested in the Steam ecosystem that I don’t know if I will ever buy another 3rd party game on any console just because I enjoy having access to these games on my Deck and laptop and love both the backwards AND forwards comparability. I just love these games I play on my Steam Deck will be accessible in 20 years on whatever PC I’m playing on.

Beside what everyone is saying about Switch (motion and gyro controls, first party games, affordability), the real main difference is physical media. Yes, Switch has digital downloads and satellite gaming, but most games are on cartridge. Maybe that means less and less as time goes on, but Polymega proves physical still matters to some.

Honestly, the only thing that makes Nintendo products viable are their 1st party IPs and wierd durable console designs.
The switch was the first console they made to appeal more to 3rd party IPs. But it was unique due to it being a console and handheld. Now everyone else is copying them, so all that remains is Mario, Zelda, etc.

Actually untrue. Nintendo put a lot of effort into the power of their consoles for a long time. But with the GameCube and N64, despite being more powerful than PlayStation consoles in the same generation, both nintendos consoles were massive flops in comparison, so Nintendo changed their strategy with the Wii, instead of trying to appeal to hardcore gamers, they targeted the casual market, and one of the ways they did that was making their consoles cheaper, and the only way they could do that is use less powerful parts

I agree with Rich on his points. The reason I bought the Switch was for both 1st and third party games. Playing the Witcher 3, Doom Eternal, Resident Evil 1,4 & 5 , Disco Elysium, Sub Nautica etc on the go was and still is mind blowing even some of these games had to have some downgrades in order to perform great on the Switch. I ordered the Steam Deck just because I want to play these third party games on go with better performance and better graphic's. RE2 Remake, Batman Arkham games, Elden Ring, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory..I have the option to finally play these games on the go with the Steam Deck. These games will never make it on Switch and the Steam Deck gives me the option to play some PS4 PC ports as well. Aside from that the third party and indie games on Steam are a lot cheaper than on the Nintendo Eshop. I hope for Nintendo that they just stick with the Switch design and just build a more powerfull version of it with full fleshed out online multiplayer features. And maybe do something with the tax for third party games.

When I get my Steam Deck, will I be playing it more than the Switch? Most likely. Why? Because I will have access to way more games than I would on the Switch.
The original allure of the Switch was the ability to play AAA games (both exclusive and 3rd party) on the go. The Switch has a major bottleneck when it comes to bringing in 3rd party games and this is due to its power. The Steam Deck doesn't have that issue and can realize the Switch's allure better than the Switch can.

The Switch is great for its platform exclusives. It's not good for triple A gaming. Same applies to the Steam Deck. But at least games on Steam you will own for the PC too. Honestly, people are being idiots when it comes to the Switch and its portability. And trust me, a gaming laptop will always beat a Steam Deck with ease. In my opinion the Steam Deck is the ultimate handheld/portable "console."
It's so easy to compare it to the Switch (I'm guilty of this too), but in my opinion... the Switch was always a pretty crappy handheld console, but it's all we had and as a result it enticed a lot of developers and publishers to release their games on the platform. Its library and battery life alone means it will maintain a place in handheld gaming for years, but in my opinion... where the Switch excels is as a home console docked to a bigscreen TV with a Pro Controller or one of the many retro controllers available for the system. The Switch feels great as a home console permanently connected to my TV, but much, much less good in my hands.
Meanwhile, honestly--in comparison the performance, feel/comfort and user interface of the Steam Deck has impressed me as a handheld in ways that I have never been impressed before. Seriously, the thing just feels so good in the hands... its ergonomics are great, it's got a nice big screen, and the sound its speakers produces is much better than I would expect in something meant to be handheld.
I am also a major fan of Linux and free and open source operating systems in general (and a user of Linux on my desktop/laptop machines since about 2004-2006), and the Deck's compatibility with non-native applications using Proton is very impressive. Add on some serious tweaking and customizability for graphical/battery balancing and you've got a winner of a system.

I’d be inclined to agree if it weren’t for the fact that I’m coming onto a year since I reserved it and I still can’t get my Deck. Also, the fact that everything that needs to be replaced in it is proprietary and every little mod you do voids the warranty and is even pricier to replace makes it as anti-consumer as it is consumer-friendly.

One of the biggest thing would be that Nintendo will see that people are okay with the thing being a bit bigger if it has the hardware.
Heck the Zen2/RDNA2 SOC on the Deck, they could put that in the Switch 2! The hardware is already there and now has already been tested! This would mean Nintedo can still get next-gen ports due to the PS5/XSX/XSS sharing the same Zen2/RDNA2 architecture, and thus making Switch 2 ports will much easier compared to now with the PS4/X1 -> Switch ports as they share different architecture.
Even better? That would mean if there were a port onto the Switch 2, then devs can easily put that Switch settings/optimization on the SD1.
I think a SD2 announcement with a Zen4/RDNA3 will most likely happen when a Switch 2 is dropped, so SD1 owners can get those Switch optimizations.

I understand that opinion. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t as pumped for switch as I used to be. Still love it though but it’s getting used less.
It’s different now for me because all my friends and even some family got switches, so even though I had it for almost half a decade, the last 2 years were the push for literally everyone else in my life to hop on. I just can’t see some of those people getting a steam deck.
So now it’s a lot of online and wireless multiplayer content I couldn’t fully enjoy prior (we started playing Diablo 3 after immortal pooped the bed but got my friends interested in it, def recommend), but it’s all games I’ve played before.
I’ve played the big third party ports, the 10 year old console ports, the Nintendo IPs I care about, and the switch outings were great for the most part. The lots of Wii U ports I bought twice.
    But like, what’s next?
I noticed recently that with a few exceptions, most of the games I own were released in the first 2ish years of the console’s life.
Friends and family are obsessed because all of this is new to them, and honestly, especially for people who have been away from gaming for a bit, the best time to get in if you haven’t is probably now because the backlog is impressive. But there’s a good chunk of people who have been there did that years ago. Waiting for that next big thing to keep me from party pooper status.

And their pricing is ridiculous, paying £50 -£60 price for a game and it would probably never drop. The different colors, the mystique of it all. Not to mention all the nostalgia that comes with Nintendo games and products. On top of the accessibility and cheaper price of the switch. Overall, I think the youth, and casual gamers are drawn more toward the switch whereas more hardcore and sound gamers would gravitate towards the Steam Deck. But who knows where we stand in the next 5 years
