"Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a . 44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk? - Inspector Callahan

I love both of them and had my share of .44’s. They are now gone, old age and arthritis made for too much recoil. Now even the .357 full power recoil can be too much. So I am a 357 person . Big enough for here in Kansas

I have a Smith .357 that I love. I’ve had both Ruger RedHawk and Blackhawk in 44. Unless you are gonna hunt you don’t need either one of these. The 365 with 13+ shots for self defense is all I need.
I plan to deer hunt with my 357 this year and it’s adequate at 75 yards or under.
I wish I still had the super Blackhawk it was a great stout revolver.

The 44 Magnum 340 grain + P + (Buffalo Bore) is some serious horsepower. There is an experience you won't soon forget. If you get the chance, own both a 357 and 44 Magnum, you will never regret it.

Heck, Buffalo Bore churns out a +P+ in the .44 Mag. I think it's listed at over 1500 ft. lbs. of energy out of a 6" bbl.----too much for me!! HA! The older I get, the lamer my cartridge choices seem to be. Don't know if that's wisdom or arthritis talking. My brother-in-law LOVES his big Smith X-frame in .500 Magnum. I don't. I really find that .44 Spl. and .45 Colt are just about right for me. Big bore, adequate oomph, but still fun to shoot.

  • @jonathanblack1416

    Such a hard choice.
You can guarantee one well placed shot with 357 is sufficient unlike 9 mil that you want at least two or three shots to be sure they do they up, but a 44 you can pretty much count on even a bad shot severely stopping any action against you. Well placed shot with either of the three or even a 22 can end it all permanently with one shot.
The 22 has the highest one shot kill on record and 380 comes after that. This shows us that the less recoil and muzzle flash can be a great benefit to get on target eventually if your not the greatest shot under pressure you have a better chance of getting your good shot if so.
I think a pro os better off with the 44 over them all and the worst one is or the least well trained the lower in charge they need to go to have a better chance and go with higher round capacity.
A pro needs one shot and so your capacity goes up even when you have only five, six or seven shots it’s more because you don’t need as many tries to get the kill shot 😂
This I believe is the most advisable way for all to look at it based on their skills.
A lady that doesn’t train well or a man would be better off with a 22 or 380. The Ruger 380 Mac is a nice choice for them both as it hold 15 + 1 giving them a good amount of chances to get on target for success.
Colt 45 is nice too though for good shooters. No?
    What y’all think ?

Is true that the 44 magnum is a lot more powerful than the 357 Magnum. However, the 357 Magnum can do a lot better than five hundred and something foot-pounds! With completely safe hand loads or some of the higher-end 357 Magnum ammo like Buffalo Bore or Grizzly or Underwood xcetera, 650 to 700 ft lbs is easy to achieve out of a good 4in 357. In a five or a six inch barrel, expect an additional 50 to 150 ft lbs pounds. I own more than one 44 magnum and more than 357, love both cartridges.

Let me run off into "Left Field". Like you, I like the advantages of the 357 in terms of milder recoil, faster follow up shots, and just easier on aging joints and muscles. The one Single Action I really want to see Ruger make is a Stainless, Super Blackhawk Hunter in 357; both regular and Bisley versions would be great to see. Not sure how you would feel about that; just my .02 cents worth. GBY, Mark--a blessed Resurrection day to y'all !!

Love them both, VERY much enjoy shooting each of them,,, but in recent times I have replaced my 357 with a 10mm & my 44 with either my 460 or 500, I find myself carrying my 3" .500 S&W mag with 600gr ammo more & more as my primary EDC/CCW it makes the whole thing of having to fire more than once, a thing of the past, some may believe it's over kill, but I never worry about hard barriers or penetration...

I love the 357 magnum. You can get a revolver and lever action in both calibers but the 357 mag is more cheaper than the 44 Mag and with a larger amount of options in load selection. Also 38 Special is almost 9mm luger cheap. Which means you have a very good plinking cartridge that doesn't break the bank unlike the 44 Special which is in the same price range as some of the magnum rounds. Also the 357 and 38 are very easy cartridges to get into the hobby of reloading with. Any animal up to black bear size can be killed within 100 yards with a 357 magnum with 158 to 180 grain hard cast loads. If you need something more than that then get a true rifle chambered gun or 12 gauge shotgun.

there are no serious criticisms about the 357, it's capable and dependable. the 44 is a different animal and (imho) is more suited for the handloader. few want to shoot a box of full power 300gr in one outing, but loaded like a special and you can go all day. it has the same capabilities as the 357 but can be stepped up much further if needed/wanted. and when you load it in a lever, it's all over imho again

The car doors back when This problem of shooting through then occurred the doors was not only Bette steel Tia we have today but was so thick that if you punched a door in the middle weakest point you’d never be able to even dent it. You’d break your fingers and hand. Severe pain and injury. Even a hammer would need allot of serious force to do any light damage to it. Kicking a dent in it would be a chore also.
My dads 1951 GMC truck door and fenders were so thick and such high grade pure steel that I’d never attempt to even try to punch it lightly as it felt by just knocking on it like you knock in a door was not something you wanted to ever take your anger out on. And that’s after this time period of the 357 creation by a good amount of years and so I wonder what those doors were like.
Today you can shoot a hole through car and truck doors with an air rifle and dent it with a red Ryder.
An air rifle would only put a small ding in my dad’s 1951 GMC door at best and a red Ryder would only chip the paint. I know lol 😂

A sub sonic 400 grain 44mag out of an 18in barrel delivers over 800flbs of force. That's enough to drop any deer, and, its subsonic so if you have a suppressor the report is incredibly low.

If we had to only choose one of these rounds I would choose the .357. If nothing else, simply because you could practice with .38 rounds and save some money while allowing children and smaller folks the ability to get used to the firearm and work their way up to the more powerful .357 cartridge. Personally, I enjoy both and it's a bonus that both rounds can be fired out of a rifle. This is convenient and allows you to need only one caliber, instead of having to carry two different calibers in the field.

Always 44 … the sharp “crack” of the 357 destroys my hearing! The boom of the 44 does not.
As to recoil … the 44 is not bad; and 44 Spl is quite tame WHILE effective. The 38 Spl is not.
But, I admit, any caliber is fine … as long as the first digit is a 4 …

I always avoided being around a .357 Magnum on the range because of it's crack and spit, especially with short barrels. Police had a hard time with blinding flash at night with their duty .357 revolvers, not only out of the muzzle but also the cylinder to barrel gap.
