I use some Remington .357 125g SJHP for hunting. In my 6 inch revolver they are running 1350 fps and in my Henry X 16 inch bbl they are screaming at 2150 fps. I run the same chrono you have. That is ammo is 80s vintage that I got from a retired border patrol agent for free. #1776
I just got a Henry 16 inch in 44 magnum, and I’m seriously considering a 357 as well, although maybe 20 inch. Some states are starting “straight-wall deer seasons,” which only allow straight-wall cartridge rifles and handguns.
Yeah, those box velocities were from a handgun length barrel. But being designed and marketed for a lever gun, you would think they would list the rifle velocities🤔🤔
I think Henry and Hornady owe you some commissions b/c you just sold me on that 44. Holy smokes. That was an awesome test and thanks for the extra verifications. Feel free to bring those 2 rifles back and shoot some of those failed JHPs in those calibers. They might prove themselves a bargain out of a 20" barrel. But you really can't do much better than these 2 rounds today. Edit: I just searched and found Hornady makes 140gn and 160 Lever Revolution ammo for my 30-30. So no new rifle needed. It has the flex tip and improves its effective range significantly. So thanks for promoting me to research these. Gonna get a couple boxes of the 160s.
The 30-30 ammo's good stuff just a bit expensive. I load my own with the leverevolution powder. It's good stuff and it seems like the ways it burns works well in long barrels. I use standard soft point or hollow point Boat tail .308 bullets because I mostly shoot a 30-30 bolt action.
the 30 30 is the one round they make that makes any sense to me, the higher B.C they claim actually is true for the 30 30 whereas you can get more or less equal B.C regular lead 240 and 220 grainers fairly easily.
I have a lever action Rossi .44, with a 20” octagonal barrel. In clocking various rounds, I determined right away, that even LeverEvolution rounds are velocity rated on the box from pistol length barrels. For instance, Remington 180-grain Jacketed soft points are rated at 1600fps, but they clock at almost 2200 FPS out of the 20” barrel.
Those Henry lever guns are great. I have the 357 myself. And any caliber in the Hornady Lever Evolution have proven to be top shelf rounds for me. Nice video.
Always love a good levergun! Edit to add: I think keeping the cloth with rifle rounds is good! I don't usually see clothing represented in rifle round tests from the manufacturer's videos.
The Magnum pistol cartridges are generally loaded with powder that was designed for rifles using a pistol sized cartridge. The 30 Carbine, 38-40 and 44-40 are some examples. So, when you put them in a rifle, you get good performance like your test shows. The lighter Magnum bullet loads also pick up a lot of velocity. Another great video!
.357 magnum fan for years, GP100 fixed sight revolver, 77/357 bolt rifle and Desert eagle .357 magnum... all of them work fantastic with Federal 158 gr JSP and so easy to reload. Now the 125 grain will stop almost anything especially in a HP. you can get bigger and heavier firearms but a .357 in a 125 grain in a close combat situation will blow your ears out and stop the threat.
A test like this would be good if you could use a piece of deer hide that is moist enough to simulate live conditions. We used the 44 mag on deer with excellent results. My daughter hit one at 120 yards. Baseball entry and softball size exit
Those high readings are actual velocity. The barrel is actually driving these rounds to impressive speeds. I was shocked when I did my tests. Impressive performance.
1776 is a great number, getting nearly 1000fpe from a 357 even out of a rifle really surprised me, highly impressed by both and may even try using those 44’s for next deer season (or remmington green and white box 180grain jsp). Also I prefer cloth with all tests regardless of firearm, caliber, or weather. I’m good either way just keep ur consistent. Great video
One of my most favorite rifles is an older Rossi 92 Trapper (16-inch barrel) with Fire Sights in .357 Mag. Several years ago sitting in a bush blind and shooting off a monopod shooting stick I dropped an 8-Point buck at around 90 yards with a single shot to the chest. The deer went straight down, slightly raised its head three times and that was it. I was using 180 Grain Federal Power-Shoks JHP. Molly is that little trapper's name and would be one of the very last rifles I would get rid of.
I think Federal has a new 357 round for a lever action. Its called Hammer Down and It's a 170 grain bullet. It would be interesting to see if it could beat the Hornaday Lever Action. Thanks for all the hard work you put in these videos. One more thing keep the cloth on the block
The manufacturer might have been trying to hit those advertised velocities out of a typical hunting revolver where you’d still see a sizable fireball. If that fireball was dissipated in a longer barrel it might have been able to generate the extra velocity you’re seeing. Just a guess on my part. Great video.
I use the LEVERevolution in my Marlin 44 Mag for deer hunting in Oklahoma. Hornady also has 250 g in 45-70 that I use in my Malin Guide gun. Both flex tipped rounds run great out of my lever guns. Thanks for the verification of my experience.
WoW!!! What a fantastic jelly test. That is pure confidence in a rifle ammo combination. Wonder what the 30-30 Lever Evolution would do? Great test as usual, really appriciate what you do to educate us all in real world ammo performance.
Great video, I love level actions, but there so expensive anymore. I used to have 5 different Marlins from my favorite .35 Remington, 30-30 and 45-70. I even had a Winchester Buffalo Bill commemorative with medallion in the stock, and octagon barrel. All sold when I got sick, and hobbled up. Another great video.
My dad taken deer with 45-70 we actually recovered one of the bullets this year. I got one rd of them left old box of 35rem my wife uncle had when got his 35rem when he passed. He had one of those 3030 Buffalo Bill rifles went up for auction 😮. Keep 760 rem in 3006 theo.
Great video, just what I was after. The box velocities are based on a 7.5" barrel for the 44 and 8" for the 357 per the Hornady website. Last season I shot a doe at 80 yards with the 44 mag Leverevolution from my Henry. Deer ran about 30 feet and dropped. The round devastated the shoulder it hit. The FTX bullets are great stuff. I use the FTX 44 Special Critical Defense on foxes and coyotes. They don't over penetrate and result in a quick kill. However, range is limited with the Specials as they drop. The 44 mags run pretty flat out past 100 yards. One other item - Hornady customer support advised me to not use the XTP bullets out of a rifle as they may come apart due to the long barrel's higher velocity. I was advised that the FTX are fine out of a long gun, as evidenced by the fact that the FTX is used in the Leverevolution rounds.
I have one of each lever action rifle; one a .357 mag., and the other a .44 mag. Your video has me excited about trying either next deer season! Loved the 1776 part. Funny when the velocity matches your shirt!
Good lord!! That was fantastic! Either one of those would be devastating on 2 or 4 legged animals. The 20” barrels seem like a magic combination. Awesome test good sir 👍🇺🇸
Excellent video as usual! I might have to "retire" my trusty old Winchester '94 in .30-30 for a Rossi R92 in .44 Magnum or .45/.454 as my truck gun and stoke it with Hornady Lever Evolution. Yeah, I did notice you utilized Henry rifles in your video, but I'm not a Henry fan when it comes to knock about truck and ATV guns. Your tests really caught my attention because of the velocities and bullet expansion as I was just about convinced that all currently available commercial handgun caliber ammo was getting puny and headed down a rutted, dirt goat path from there. Keep up the great work!
That's weird because I saw these tested in handguns before and the expansion and overall performance was suboptimal. Now it seems like they are designed to work well from a handgun and even better from a long gun. Those velocities surprised me for sure. I do keep a box of these in .44 mag and .45 Colt just in case the lever guns come out for hunting. Very interesting video that makes me feel better about my choice.
I like the clothing barrier for the rifle rounds. Like you mentioned in the last video it sort of represents the hide that would be on an animal. I would have been surprised at the chrono readings also. One would think the listed speeds would be from a longer barrel for reasons as you stated. I have a Marlin 357 lever action and really like it. I wouldn't mind a 44 magnum to go with it.
I think keeping the clothing barrier is a good idea. I think it's a good way to help test under more real world conditions. It's a better safe than sorry kinda situation i believe. Both of those rounds performed very well. Awesome video as always, brother.
TOOL ... THAT'S CRAZY ... !!!!! OH... WOW ...!!!!!!! SPEEDS ... !!!!!!!! YOU ARE AGAIN KNOCKING IT OUT OF THE PARK ....!!!!!!!! SUPER VIDEO .... !!!!!! .... DOUBLE G. HERE ... !!!!
I have a 16 inch barrel Rossi that I consistently get over 2100 fps with Hornady 125 grain American Gunner ammo. Both these magnum rounds become a different animal out of a rifle barrel. I simply love lever guns.
That was an amazing test!! I can’t believe the results you got with the lever guns and that ammo. Would like to see the results with the same ammo in revolvers and see what type of results in the bullets into the gel and see if the results would be close. Keep up the great videos!
@@ToolsandTargets The chamber losses in a revolver are strong compared to a rifle… you should not be surprised at all. All that pressure bleed at the cone of the barrel is contained as forward momentum in the rifle and lost in the pistol.
When I chronographed some 357 and 44 in lever rifles(20 inch Stainless Rossi 92s) I didn't get great velocity, 1350s, from the Fiocchi 44 mag 240 SPs, but got 1787 from American Eagle 158gr SP in 357. I did not get to test them in my handguns, but will at some point, so would assume the Fiocchi are fairly mild from a handgun. Even at 1350 those 240 soft points dropped a 200 pound hog DRT at 60 yards. The lever rifles are nice and light, compact, and recoil is minimal, so walking the woods with one is comfortable. I have scout scopes on them and they are good to about 125 before you need to do serious holdover.
Hornady used a 7.5 in barrel for velocity. While the line of ammo is targeted for lever’s, the projectile design helps with down range performance in all barrel lengths
So I recently got a .45colt henry and I got some buffalo bore 260gr rounds that according to buffalobore should be pushing 1860fps with a 20" barrel it would be really cool if you coukd do a test with that and see how accurate that claim is, and how well it will compare to the .44mag revolution rounds.
Now this was a really interesting test Tools. Massive energy, massive expansion and penetration off the chart. I might be worried about the over penetration. But if you're fighting off a home invasion I doubt your worried about a good guys being behind the nasty one(s). Going to have to try and find some of that 357 stuff for my Henry. Be vigilant and always be safe my friend.
someone was complaining about someone using .357 lever gun on hogs while themselves using 7.62x39 which is almost the same energy with a much smaller projectile that doesnt have a lead tip on it to expand esaily which I found funny.
My son took his first deer with the 357 mag and I took a black bear a few years ago with the 44 mag both of them are good for 4 legs or 2 legs critters.
Man that's hella impressive. I'm assuming they probably used a '6' test barrel for the box velocities. Oh, and definitely keep the clothing barrier for the rifle tests as for a matter of consistency 👍
Please keep the clothing simulation on the jelly test, its more meaningful, imo! Thanks for all the great testing! Hornady’s website says the .44 Leverevolution is tested out of a 7.5” barrel and the .357 out of an 8” barrel. I haven’t looked at a box of either ammo in person, but usually it says on most boxes what the barrel length the listed performance was tested in too.
NOT for bears....My buddy shot a 300lb black bear in calibre 444 Marlin , Hornady Leverution, it does NOT have enough penetration for bear... great for deer
And in checking, Hornady used a, 8" Vented test barrel for the 1440 FPS rating. Like everyone has an 8" .347 Magnum revolver. Basically what you've got is a compromise where velocity will be lower from a 6" revolver, and a good bit slower from a 4" revolver. Revolvers people are more likely to have, and if they don't handload, they probably don't know what to expect from an 18 1/2" barrel.
Hornady must have used a 6in barrel length. That's very impressive out of a rifle. May have to switch out in my 627 to 7 of those in 357. Use other stuff out of Rossi since I don't hunt anymore. Appreciate the excellent info. I almost cried with the background music when that one hit 1776 🇺🇸 🇺🇸🎆
. Took a little checking on fps. It's from an 8 inch barrel according to them. So for a 20 inch that's right on the money. Might need to try it on a gel bunny rabbit 🐇 lol
Please add the lever gun tests to your .357 and 44 mag ammo tests. With as popular as those Henry rifles have become I think it would be a hit! I’ll watch em all a few times:)
Great performance. Deer wouldn't stand a chance. Just in case you didn't know this, you can only use Lever Revolution brass with Hornady ftx bullets. Keep that in mind if you are reloading. The brass is shorter than normal.
I am sure the manufacturer tested velocities were through handguns. The quoted velocities make sense vs. comparable magnum loads. 5.56 velocities are probably always arrived at via rifle.
The box velocity is for a specific handgun barrel. This is gennerally 4''-8'' long. 357 mag & 44 mg benefit from the carbine barrels. The numbers you are getting re correct.
My favorite video yet tools. The 1776 part had me rolling. If I ever see these rounds I will most certainly pick them up for my 357 Rossi lever action. Awesome round and video
We need more lever tests. I'd like to see some Underwood .44 mag xtreme penetrators or hardcast through an 18 - 20" lever action. I believe the listed velocities are out of a handgun (as they would traditionally be handgun rounds) and I bet they're really cooking with a rifle.
This is common with both calibers. Exceptional carbine cartridges. This is covered by several other videos on YT. You will also see the 10mm "over perform" in a carbine. Great vid.
I found this ammo test interesting, I've used the 44 mag in my Ruger super Blackhawk hunter to take a deer last year, this year I'll be using this ammo out of my Marlin 1894 rifle, I'm looking to get some of the 357 ammo to use to deer hunt with my Marlin 1894csbl. I would like to see the new hammer down in both calibers tested as well to see how they compare to the Hornady rounds.
The .357 mag and 44 are the only pistol rounds I care for shot from a rifle platform. I can't stand the 9mm riles I feel like it's a waste of space for caliber vs platform
1776 music and the pause...... Had me rolling for a minute .357 lever action, that's one of my favorites...it did almost as good as the 44 on the gel as far as penetration
I like the cloth test personally. I haven’t really seen many ballistic reviews with a cloth barrier. I think it’s a great idea to show how the rounds will react after going through clothing. 👍
One day I decided a 444 Marlin with a 16" bbl would make a great truck gun. Light, handy, 240 grains of JHP goodness at about 2400FPS! What's not to like!? Well....I had no idea how loud that ported bbl would be. Kicks like a mule but that's part of the fun. Now the price of that ammo is crazy if you can find any. Glad I bought the dies. Now I want a 16" 357 with a threaded bbl. Bet I could load some super quiet subsonic 38s.
I think your speed ratings were higher than expected because those are considered handgun rounds, and are rated coming out of a 6 inch barrel. Expect higher velocities out of rifles. Sometimes ammo lists velocities for both handgun and rifle.
This was a funny one! The disbelief in the chrono readings, the 1776, and some really great performance. Awesome test!
4:38 in case anyone's looking
Thank you sir. It was definitely fun.😎👊

The Magnum pistol cartridges are generally loaded with powder that was designed for rifles using a pistol sized cartridge. The 30 Carbine, 38-40 and 44-40 are some examples. Hand gun ammo is usually tested thru 4"barrels. The 20" barrel allows pressure to build up resulting in the higher velocity you got.

That was an amazing test!! I can’t believe the results you got with the lever guns and that ammo. Would like to see the results with the same ammo in revolvers and see what type of results in the bullets into the gel and see if the results would be close. Keep up the great videos!
Definitely gotta run em through some revolvers on a test.😎👍
They really are a lot of fun to shoot.
I love your videos, man. You're fun to watch and very informative. Keep 'em coming!
Appreciate that.😎👍
Hornady used a 7.5 in barrel for velocity. While the line of ammo is targeted for lever’s, the projectile design helps with down range performance in all barrel lengths
Love the case hardened look! Great performance from both of them 🤠
😎👊
Awesome test! Appreciate the lever action Henry's. Love the long gun test
Thank you sir.😎👊
This is a very interesting test. I really enjoyed it. Would like to see the same test in .45 colt. Again thanks for a excellent test.
Thank you sir.
Awesome video!! My friend! I’ve been wanting to see this test with these rifles!!!!!!
This was a fun one! Looks like Hornady came up with a winner winner chicken dinner! I hope they don’t change a thing with these rounds.
Great stuff.
Very impressive. Packs quite a punch. Keep the kloth. Saw that Henry has a 357 revolver now. 👍🇺🇸👊
I saw that too. Not sure how I feel about them. Definitely wanna see one in person.😎👊
You can't go wrong with Hornady ammunition! 🤠
😎👊
Now this was a really interesting test Tools. Massive energy, massive expansion and penetration off the chart. I might be worried about the over penetration. But if you're fighting off a home invasion I doubt your worried about a good guys being behind the nasty one(s). Going to have to try and find some of that 357 stuff for my Henry.
Be vigilant and always be safe my friend.
Definitely impressive stuff.😎👍
Fantastic video. Good job.
Were y'all the voice coach for Buster Scruggs?
Thank you sir. If I was, I haven't gotten my royalty check yet!😲
Wow, makes you think a 357 levergun is still a viable tool 🤔 lol. That Henry seems like a sweet rifle.
These 20" barrels really wake em up.
someone was complaining about someone using .357 lever gun on hogs while themselves using 7.62x39 which is almost the same energy with a much smaller projectile that doesnt have a lead tip on it to expand esaily which I found funny.
My son took his first deer with the 357 mag and I took a black bear a few years ago with the 44 mag both of them are good for 4 legs or 2 legs critters.
Nice! 😎👍
Man that's hella impressive. I'm assuming they probably used a '6' test barrel for the box velocities. Oh, and definitely keep the clothing barrier for the rifle tests as for a matter of consistency 👍
😎👊
Please keep the clothing simulation on the jelly test, its more meaningful, imo! Thanks for all the great testing!
Hornady’s website says the .44 Leverevolution is tested out of a 7.5” barrel and the .357 out of an 8” barrel.
I haven’t looked at a box of either ammo in person, but usually it says on most boxes what the barrel length the listed performance was tested in too.
Nothing listed on the box. Strange name choice for ammo that they test out of handguns.🤷♂️
NOT for bears....My buddy shot a 300lb black bear in calibre 444 Marlin , Hornady Leverution, it does NOT have enough penetration for bear... great for deer
Those loads out of a carbine have more than enough power and penetration for bear inside 100 yards ..
💥🐻💥
And in checking, Hornady used a, 8" Vented test barrel for the 1440 FPS rating. Like everyone has an 8" .347 Magnum revolver. Basically what you've got is a compromise where velocity will be lower from a 6" revolver, and a good bit slower from a 4" revolver. Revolvers people are more likely to have, and if they don't handload, they probably don't know what to expect from an 18 1/2" barrel.
😎👊
Been waiting for this one! Thanks Tools!
😎👊
Hornady must have used a 6in barrel length. That's very impressive out of a rifle. May have to switch out in my 627 to 7 of those in 357. Use other stuff out of Rossi since I don't hunt anymore. Appreciate the excellent info. I almost cried with the background music when that one hit 1776 🇺🇸 🇺🇸🎆
Those aint tears. Your eyes are just sweating!😎👊
Loved this vid. My lil lady has the Marlin .357 and I have the Henry .44, love them both! Good vid!
That was great. Awesome test and awesome results. Nice work.
Thank you sir.😎👊
@@ToolsandTargets your welcome.👍👍👍
Because of this video I just purchased a lever action in .44mag. Thank you sir.
Do you like your 44 lever action?
ARs to lever guns with even time to shift gears! Love the change ups!
Thank you sir. If there's one thing my little collection has, it's variety.😎👍
I run the 44 Mag Leverevolution in my 17" Henry Big Boy X for deer season and that is a devastating combo inside of 150 yards.
💥🦌💥
The cloth layers are a great realistic addition. Even for hunters to help simulate hair & thicker skin layers.
Label and stash for for future research ! Nice getting some kick ass power for once !
Amen! I was so used to weak stuff, I thought something was wrong.🤣🤣🤣
I am sure the manufacturer tested velocities were through handguns. The quoted velocities make sense vs. comparable magnum loads.
5.56 velocities are probably always arrived at via rifle.
😎👍
The box velocity is for a specific handgun barrel. This is gennerally 4''-8'' long. 357 mag & 44 mg benefit from the carbine barrels. The numbers you are getting re correct.
😎👍
My favorite video yet tools. The 1776 part had me rolling. If I ever see these rounds I will most certainly pick them up for my 357 Rossi lever action. Awesome round and video
Thank you sir.😎👊
Try the same projectiles in the gel with revolvers
😎👍
We need more lever tests. I'd like to see some Underwood .44 mag xtreme penetrators or hardcast through an 18 - 20" lever action. I believe the listed velocities are out of a handgun (as they would traditionally be handgun rounds) and I bet they're really cooking with a rifle.
I have a ton of .44 Mag rounds I gotta get tested.😆
@@ToolsandTargets thanks brother, appreciate what you do.
Haha you know its packin a hell of a punch when you gotta put a disclaimer before the chrono readings!!
Hell yeah Hornady!!!
🤣🤣🤣
I kind of agree, although I do have something I just picked up in 9mm to test with.😆
Thanks for the ammo test Brother! Keep up the great work. Love your hat!!!
Thank you sir.😎👊
1776 music and the pause...... Had me rolling for a minute .357 lever action, that's one of my favorites...it did almost as good as the 44 on the gel as far as penetration
I couldn't resist!😂
I love this video! When the 1776 showed up and the star spangled banner played I rolled Bro. This is definitely in my top 10! Great job T!
Thank you sir. I figured someone would get a kick outta that.😎👊
With that barrel length and stuff measured in i can believe that no doubt Tools
😎👍
I like the cloth test personally. I haven’t really seen many ballistic reviews with a cloth barrier. I think it’s a great idea to show how the rounds will react after going through clothing. 👍
The magnums really have a lot more potential in a longer barrel.
Yeah, I definitely forgot how much these 20" barrels do for the performance.
Idea! 36" wooden ruler under the blocks?
🤔
Great speeds on this ammo, the 357 looks weak on pounds of impact but I still love it.
😎👊
I’ve done some hunting with the 44 in a Winchester 94. Impressive inside 100 yards
Like the cloth barrier, even for rifles. Maybe even add some leather. Plus levers using ‘handgun’ rounds is no joke.
😎👊
I love these in 45/70 as well. Took a deer with them and the 44 mag it sure does the job well. I’d keep the heavy clothing on the gel.
The 45-70 in these are absolute monsters from my BFR.
Mhmm
I think your speed ratings were higher than expected because those are considered handgun rounds, and are rated coming out of a 6 inch barrel. Expect higher velocities out of rifles. Sometimes ammo lists velocities for both handgun and rifle.
Those are good, tough bullets, too. Magnum class. Even rifle class, to hold together at those velocities.
Yessir
I get 1900 fps with factory Hornady 240 grain XTP in my Marlin 1894, 20" barrel. I was blown away with that speed.
20" barrels really get em movin.
damn, even the 357 is more impressive than the 5.56 rounds you just tried. That 44 hits harder than a 7.62x39! Gotta love lever guns...
Yessir. Magnum power.😎👍
