I would have put the Lee-Enfield rifle, used by the British and Commonwealth countries through both world wars, somewhere on the list.

I have a SMLE #4 and love it but, in fairness, it was the AK-47 of it's day compared to the K-98 which was the AR-15. The K98 had the advantage of few more years of development and seeing the mistakes made in earlier designs so it was just a better design.

For a Rifle that spanned Boar War, WWI,WWII and Korean War and untold skirmishes; that was responsible for spreading the British Empire across the globe and has taken every game animal on the Planet, I think it shows extreme bias to omit this amazing rifle. The fastest, slickest bolt action ever made. In the No.4 pattern it was the most successful sniper rifle of WWII.

Not to be picky, but there was no Air Force in 1911. Army was formed 1775 before the revolution, the Navy a year later along with the Marines. The Air Force originally was the Army Air Corp, which after WWII they became their own entity around 1946. I whole heartily agree with your pick of the 1911. I carried that in the Navy.

I have a few of the guns on the list, my Colt Python is from '92, so it's hand crafted. The timing issue you talked about mostly occurs from shooting thousands of magnums through it. I've primarily fired .38 Special rounds including many wadcutters and that's not usually an issue. I'm glad you gave it consideration.

I really think one of the best and most important guns is the Mauser. The 98 is probably the toughest action made and still duplicated today. To think the whole idea it came from the latch on the outhouse door.

Piece of trivia. Before WWI, the Mauser manufacturers were suing the people making the '03 Springfield for patent theft. They maintained the '03 was almost a total copy of the 95's action. And they had a point...case was up before US patent court and it looked like they would win. Fortunately for Springfield, the US declared war on Germany and the American courts threw the whole case out.

It’s a hard list to make. I wouldn’t have added the Springfield 1903 even thou I like it a lot. It’s really just a Mauser clone. I’d offer the Brown Bess, the British military musket they used for decades over multiple wars around the world. It even had a cameo in the Russian Afghan War in the 80s with some Afghan geezer in a propaganda photo.

Great list! I would add the Browning Auto-5 and almost identical Remington 11. The Auto 5 was the first practical semi auto shotgun and was THE semi auto hunting shotgun for many years. It's only drawback is it's heavy.

M1 Garand - original US military models are sold by at CMP. Made by Springfield (US armory) Winchester - HRA and IHC. Myself think the HRA's are one of the best - specially if you find one with a LMR barrel. LMR barrels where preferred by military snipers. 1903 and it's sister 1903-A3's / the 1917 rifle are also great military rifles. Thank you for the video. Hope the family and you are doing well.

What about the SMLE : millions used by Britain, India, Canada, Australia New Zealand, etc, during WW1 and WW2 ? Also the "Brown Bess", one of the first mass produced, widely copied, best military rifle of it's era? And, as many have mentioned; the FN FAL. American Jingoistic bias!

As to the “AK” … SKS out shoot them any day of the week.
Loved my Model 29 so much I also bought a 629 … the 29, as well as the Super Blackhawk … shot better than that stainless steel POS.

I think I would have added the Smith & Wesson model 10. It is the sturdy workhorse .38 revolver and the standard by which the world patterns most of its 38 revolvers from 1899 to present. There have been more people issued that revolver then I believe, any other handgun America has produced. It served the needs of Security Guards, Air Force Crewman, and pilots, Military Police, and officers checking posts needing to have side arms, as well as civilians for Personal Defense, and Armored Car Gaurds., AND for at least 60 years of the 20th century, MOST Police Departments. During World War II Smith and Wesson even provided model tens chambered in 38 Smith & Wesson to meet the needs of British and Commonwealth troops. There is just basically, no class of society that has Not, been armed with the Smith& Wesson model 10 since 1899.

I am sure many have their own list of the very best guns ever made, I was surprised (as are some others) that the British Lee Enfield was not included, also the Broomhandle Mauser and the Luger, these last two were so beautifully made and the tolerances were minute and probably not financially viable today. The Henry repeating rifle as a forerunner to the Winchester was a great invention as well.
The British Crimean War Enfield rifle was a great innovation and used over much of the world and in the American Civil War as was the Whitworth, along with the Enfield was very accurate, the American Springfield as used in the ACW was yet another classic. The Brown Bess as mentioned elsewhere here was another widely used and valued firearm
Well done video, excellent narration and very informative and well illustrated. Thanks for this.

You forgot the greatest weapon of war ever conceived by man. The Vickers Machine Gun. The only weapon to survive a torture test of over 5 million rounds. In Yorkshire in 1963, a class of British armorers took a newly rebuilt Vickers gun, and proceeded to fire the entire stock of ammo through it over the course of seven days. They worked in pairs, switching off at 30 minute intervals, with a third man shoveling away spent brass. The gun was fired in 250-round solid bursts, and the worn out barrels were changed every hour and a half. At the end of the five million rounds, the gun was taken back into the shop for inspection. It was found to be within service spec in every dimension.

I don’t disagree with anything on your list. I do think you should consider mentioning honorably the Thompson submachine gun. It ushered in a new genre of firearm, was effective enough to trigger the NFA, and then went on to fight in WWII.
For historical influence, I think you might also include the Broom Handle Mauser C96, and the Luger pistol. Before the Mauser, ‘semi-automatic’ was called a ‘revolver’ and if it weren’t for the Luger, we would never have had the 9mm parabellum (possibly one of the most significant calibers of all time)
Thank you for putting it out there!

I agree with all your pick’s unfortunately I only have five of them. But the only one that I could think of that is worthy of your list is the colt huntsman, woodsman and the the targetmaster. They truly are the most accurate pistols ever produced in my opinion. I have took many squirrels and rabbits over my life with them and it’s just unbelievable how exceptional they truly are. I have a browning buck mark and so do two of my old hunting friends. But nothing is as close except a a few high standards that were produced in the late 60s and 70s. But I agree with your picks I have looked for years for a garand and a mouser 98 but never found either in the condition I would like to pass down to my grandkids. Thank you for the knowledge and content. 👍

If you're going to add those to the list then the Ruger MK series 22lr pistols should also be added.

Totally agreed with you. I have a 1917 pre colt woodsman, high standard, and Belgium browning. They just don't compare to the woodsman. It fires so smoothly.
I take it to the range and shoot. Get weird looks because they can't believe I shoot it. I bought it to enjoy, not look at it.!

Read most comments. No one mentioned mg 42? List weighted toward semi-auto pistols. No smg (PPSH 43)? Few historic guns (brown bess). It's very hard not to be subjective.

Ditch the M1903. It's a Mauser copy. The US paid Mauser royalties on their patents right up to the US entry into WWI. Put in the Remington model 700 or the Marlin model 60. Even the Remington rolling block rifles were probably the most popular military contract rifle prior to the Mauser. Hard to argue that many of your suggestions came from the genius of John Moses Browning!

Good list. Have many of them, some I gave away to son's early because they were heirloom, many I'll retain until that time comes. LOL Yeah, I hear ya, still occasionally shoot my 1976 Python without issue. That said it runs factory loads, no super hot reloads. Would have given the SMLE at least an honorable mention over the Mosin. But like you said. Matter of opinion. 😎

You mentioned not being able to find a holster for one of your guns. I've seen several TH-cam videos about DYI Kydex holsters. It looks fun, cheap and can be done with a toaster oven and homemade press.

The Savage model 99? It was primarily a rifle of the USA market, but considering that it was the arguably the #1 deer rifle from about 1900 to 1970, I say one of those 20 should have been bumped for it.

Well done! I think if I’d put together this list it would have been a 95% match, which seems fairly remarkable considering the wide range of firearms you’ve listed here. Given it’s longevity, I would have chosen the M2 50 BMG instead of the Ruger Blackhawk, but that’s just a minor difference of opinion. Thanks for another great video.

Garand is a good rifle and important at it's point in history but I would of put the FN FAL as the better main battle rifle.
.22 LR Rifles I would have chosen the Marlin Model 60. Ruger has more versatility and you can eventually modify it to be very accurate but out of the box the Model 60 is the better rifle.

I was surprised to not see some guns that I would have thought almost automatic. Firstly, the M2 .50 cal "Ma Deuce"! Also extensively used in aviation applications, eg fighter planes. Not there - really? Then the M240 GPMG - almost every military in the world had/has these in use! [Interesting factoid: more than half of ALL machine guns in use today are designed and/or built by FN Herstal. ] MG34 - arguably the finest machine gun design, and in revised form, still in production. Then the famous Thompson Sub Machine gun (Tommy Gun). Interesting one, as technically not exactly a masterpiece, but as a trench clearer it was unbeatable. Its role in the "Gangster" era highlighted its popularity. The BAR - The influence of this weapon heralded in a new era in gun design, and changed warfare forever. The follow-up in evolution was the FN FAL 7,62mm rifle. This rifle set the standard going forward in military design, and was used by many military forces worldwide. However, the word "best" in the title is what obviously drove your selections, and as we don't know what you used you came up with different selections. It was a fascinating selection, nevertheless.
