    • @texasbeast239
      @texasbeast239 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I agree totally. Back when the FBI decided to test 10mm against 9mm and .45ACP, they had already decided that all loads needed to have muzzle velocities of 950fps, as a scientific experimental control. This was easy with 9mm, a real stretch with .45, and at the time it was basically impossible with 10mm. This caliber was loaded to achieve 1200 and 1300fps back then. So the FBI had to pull 10mm bullets and download them artificially to make them "fair" against the other calibers. Even then, the 10mm still beat the others, so given that superior performance despite the handicap, the FBI officially chose 10mm as their issue ammo caliber for the next few years.
      But they never went past the "fair" test. They never got to testing and issuing "realistic" hot 10mm loads. So it was rather silly.

      357 is not a beginner's weapon. The recoil and blast could cause you to develop flinching and anticipation. Start out with a 9mm or .22lr pistol and learn to hit your target with that first.
      Also 9mm or .22 won't blow out your eardrums if you have to fire inside a house.

    What I've taken away from this, is: the 357 does not loose enough power or "Lethality " to really be a downgrade from the 44. Seeing as 357 comes in a vast variety of handguns and that the lighter, tamer .38 spl can be used in the revolvers along with the lighter recoil makes it a much more attractive choice for simple versatility. Hunting, defense, and plinking can all be accomplished with the 357 in a effective manner. So for most, the deciding factor between these two calibers comes down to personal choice as both rounds can do the same thing well enough that you won't loose much by going with the "less powerful" one. Unlike many other rounds which have large trade offs between them, one example being 9mm vs .45.
    This was a highly engaging, entertaining, and more importantly, instructive video.

    • @adamhenrywalker
      @adamhenrywalker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Yeah, but a .357 Magnum will kill a deer, but the .44 Magnum bullet will completely pierce through it. What if I'm coming out of a gas station bathroom, and I see a deer stealing some things, and then it comes at me? Well, I could shoot it with a .357, but deer never travel alone. There's got to be at least 2 of them. I won't have the chance to get many shots off and land them before the deer overtake me. I would need the extra penetration of the .44 Magnum round to kill both deer in one shot.

      Do not forget that .44 Specials can be fired from the .44 magnum for less punishing practice. The Special is at its best for that purpose for the reloader. It's one of the most versatile rounds still in existence for the 'heavy' shooting revolver enthusiast.

      The .44 can be loaded with specials, with 180 gr bullets at 700 ft/sec, which rival .38 wadcutters to anyone that weighs at least 90 lbs...; at the top end, with the .44 with 180 gr JHP at 1600 fps, 240 gr JHP at 1400 fps...well, it has a wider range in the power spectrum. (But, agree the .357 is quite good, however)

      Get a 4" 357, then turn right around and pick up a 6" 44.
      The following week, go grab a couple lever-action 20" carbines for both cartridges.
      If 357 or 44 isn't enough in a handgun, don't worry, they both pick up about 300-400 FPS in the carbine.

    Great video.
    I used to go shooting often, with the .357 Magnum,
    and the .44 Magnum. Both great guns.
    Instead of using 44 Special ammo, another option
    is to use a .44 Magnum case, and hand load it with
    a .44 Special load.
    Hand loading is much better than
    factory loads, which are very hot,
    especially with magnum loads.
    A 240 grain slug, and 9 grains of Blue Dot powder,
    sends the slug zipping along at about 750 feet per second.
    There is no kick with a Model 29 S&W, with 6-1/2 inch barrel.
    When I keep my eye on the line of sight, I can actually see
    the bullet fly through the air to the target. This is fun stuff
    to see, and gives us an appreciation of ballistics.
    A really "slow" bullet, except for the unfortunate ones who
    get clobbered by this cannon shell.
    This "slow" bullet travels 2-1/2 football fields in one second.
    Another point to consider is the man stopping power,
    vs. kinetic energy (measured in foot pounds).
    The .44 Special has the same man stopping power as the .357 Magnum.
    The .44 Special has twice the man stopping power as the .38 Special,
    even though the .44 Special and the .38 Special have the same kinetic energy.
    Big, heavy slugs are cannon shells to the ones getting hit.
    "Low velocity" is not much consolation.
    Try loading a 140 grain .357 with 12 grains of Blue Dot for a light Magnum load.
    It handles much nicer than factory loads, and quite powerful.
    Try loading a 240 grain .44 with 12 grains of Blue Dot, for a light .44 Magnum load.
    Note:
    The .357 Magnum has the smallest bore size, and the highest pressure level,
    for the magnum revolvers. The supersonic jet stream, and the recoil,
    is the sharpest of all the magnum revolvers. Noise levels are the most piercing.
    P. S.
    You need to wear polycarbonate safety glasses when shooting.
    Gargoyles are a good choice.
    Wrap around lenses offer good protection

This provides the audience with a much more well rounded understanding of what pros and cons each caliber has to offer, and how the results from these tests can translate into real world scenarios. Maybe before another 46 go by you can learn enough from "educational" TH-cam videos to do something useful with them rather than just "mess with" them. Just make sure to match the "educational" videos to the guns you've been "messing with" for over 46 years. You probably don''t have to get completely specific. Just narrow it down to the basic "type" of gun. For example, are you "messing with" paintball guns, airsoft guns, airguns, water guns, rubber band guns or just random "gun-like objects" you find around the house while Mom and Dad are at work? I gotta figure that since even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then, if they were REAL GUNS and just laying around for you to "mess with" you'd have gotten a visit from "Darwin" by now and long, long ago being the "mess with guns" type and all.

      Some do see better than the majority of us. Gray eyes tend to not suffer from any night blindness at all their pupils dilate as fast as light changes. They convert very quickly but are not known for being precise. Brown / green pigment eyes are all over the chart. BLACK eyes are a strange one. They tend to be the best shots , fighter jet pilots and long range snipers. Night vision is crazy good for most with Black eyes. I’m brown green/ hazel. 20/20 nothing special. My late father had black ice eyes and could see better at night than I can in the daylight. Most important thing is eyes are muscles, exercises improve anyone’s vision, glasses make them lazy and week.

    A friend and myself were at a firing range. shooting our weapons. He had a 2 shot derringer. Asked if I wanted to try it so I did. First shot was a .38 Special. Thought the second shot was also >38 Special. Wrong!! Second shot was .357 Magnum!! LOL!! Got a bit of a shock with that second shot.

    • @DanielM-il4rz
      @DanielM-il4rz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, both calibers, the .44 and .357 are loud and have a good bit of recoil. The shorter the barrel, the more the gun “kicks”! Definitely wear some ear protection when using these calibers!! 👍😊

    Very well done, sir. I own both. I carried a 6" Security Six for decades as wilderness carry. My .44 is the old Blackhawk with a 7" barrel. It is my hog defense gun here on my property in the SE. Very close ranges in thick underbrush. Want something that will anchor a pig in place if it chooses to run through me at very close range. Hunted with both. Both excellent weapons and excellent cartridges.

    you know i don't really care about firearms but you explanation, use of logic, formatting everything for understanding variables, not just in the form of a fact sheet but to make gauging everything in something like an like an educated guess, is very impressive. then you sum it all up with perspective coupled with leaving things unbiased. you should be mandatory viewing for school teachers.
