Gotta love revolvers , one shot 1 kill dont need 20 shots .
Nope people feel so nervous with 6 shots. All it takes is one from these heavy hitters. Like Mike tyson.
This is why Evan Marshall and Gene Sanow wrote those books proving stopping power and the one shot stop ability of ammo in police use at the time. The 357 Mag has a well deserved, excellent reputation it's only problem was weak politicians and lowered standards for LEO's.
I was blasting some .357 Mag today at the range - with my 6" 686! 😃... A fun time.
Love the revolver content here. Old farts like me dig it! 👍❤️
Same here
Thanks for the video Sam! The .357 Mag and 44 Mag are easily my two favorite revolver cartridges of all time, both are very well rounded.
454 casull!
@@justusbryant7366I feel that one tilts more for hunting only. The revolvers that handle that cartridge are bigger framed and not as easy to "everyday carry". One thing for sure if you did use it for a "personal defense" round, there is no way anyone will argue it's ability to stop the threat. To quote another youtuber "she be kickin!" Kentuckyballistics.
@jackelope1776 have you not seen the snub nose 454 alaskan. You can carry that. If 454 too much you can load 45 lc
Both loads are fantastic!
I'm glad to see remington is taking care of these little sweetheart
For self-defense against most 2-legged predators, .357 magnum 125gr SJHPs are "Plenty."
BUT ... I mean ... .44 magnum is "Plenty MORE!" :)
Love my 3" 629.
As always, GREAT info here. I was very surprised that 125 gr .357 in plain gel penetrated so deeply. I guess that's an example of how less dense Clear Ballistics Gel is opposed to organic gel? Or, I dunno, sun spots? LOL. In any case, I like your take on "over penetration." Getting to the vitals is important.
That first .357 shot hit BadDude right in the sternum. I think it's safe to assume the followup shot hit a dead body. :)
This particular .357 Mag is a good all-around bullet. I've seen it do well in shorter barrels as well as in longer carbine(with spectacular results) barrels. With the better penetration over some of the lighter(110gr or 125gr) it may serve decently as a trail carry round in areas where the wildlife is black bear size or smaller.
Excellent video of two of my favorite cartridges! In reference to your support hand thumb get stung, back in the OLD days we used to wrap the support hand thumb ACROSS our strong hand around the strong thumb knuckle and it has two benefits I experienced. One it makes a STRONG grip, and it also allows easily and quickly cocking the hammer for a single action shot with the support thumb with loosening the grip. No intent here except to offer an idea you might try and judge for yourself. Thanks for the video!
I'm guessing you mean Jack Weaver grip. I used to do that and will still do it from time to time if I absolutely have to. I use the method I do now because I shoot revolvers and semi autos 50/50 and it's the only grip that works nearly as good with both platforms without modifying much.
Thanks for the videos. Nice to see the old reliable sjhp out do the fancy expensive defensive rounds.
HAve done a video comparing the .38 and .44 spl Remington sjhp loads?
Arthritis sucks in all forms...you are still a good shot Sam. love your no bullshit videos 👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲👍👍
Two fantastic rounds.
Saaaaaaaam, you know you wanna do the 125 gr buffalo bore full bore in a snubby vs a similar load in a 9mm :) :) :) hahaha. great video man.
180gr Buffalo Bore
125 BB is a wild ride. Probably lead to bullet-pulling issues in a lightweight snub.
Sam you should have known one piece of fiber board wasn't gonna work for this test 😂😂😂😂. Wow!! Excellent video 😂😂😂😂😂
Good stuff like always. The spice turmeric and black pepper is helping my joint pain Alot.
Thanks!
GS. Good video and nice shooting. Looks like either of those would more than do the job. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Im glad i found this video . Now i have a good indication on how my ruger GP100 357 mag 6 in. barrel will perform . My next revolver is going to be a smith & wesson 629 classic stainless 44 mag with the 5 inch barrel . You presented a really good informative video and demonstration on these two great cartridges . Man , i love revolvers . Thanks again for the info. and you shoot really well sir .
No two ways about it. That is some serious stuff!
Again great testing, I am big fan of revolvers as personal defense and all round tool. Learned on my dad's 686 back in 90s when I was a teen. That Remington load is an eye opener and will be looking for to add to my silvertips and HST loads for my Python.
Being a teen on the 90s was cool lol.
Gotta love higher than rated velocity and the expansion was great in both gel simulations. Great options. 👍
Excellent video. 👍
Basically every thing you would want from a handgun but seldom achieve. Thanks!
That 44 isn’t anything like those 380 you been shooting…….lol great video keep rolling these videos are enjoyable
Both cartridges are great, so the question is on the need for fast follow up shots.
With either load, followup shots shouldn't be really needed (hope so anyway!!!)
@@MS54-dc3cy maybe not on humans but on large animals attacking, such as bears and moose.
@@PassivePortfolios Great point. I'm no longer a hunter; but I get your drift. I used to use a lever action 30/30, or my . 308 - "way back then" handgun hunts were "unheard" of... I'm old..... Ha
170gr .30-30 is a much better choice than either of these pistols for protection from dangerous critters. Also, I'd use a WFN style hardcast bullet if I was facing bear problems, in probably a .44magnum. I'm more of a 45 Colt +p kind of person though.
@@MS54-dc3cy no handgun hunts, just for basic self defense protection.
👍😊 power show
I USE THESE IN MY SUPER BLACKHAWK 4/5.8 INCH 44 MAG AND MY THREE SCREW BLACKHAWK 6.5 INCH. LOVE THE MAGNUMS.GOOD STUFF SAM.KEEP THEM COMING.
Revolvers are making a huge comeback
Yeah i gotta grab a box of both next time im at the gun shop
Excellent real world ballistics testing. 👌... The difference in comparison to clear gel alone is noticeable.
Kudos for Remington really improving its products to a level that other brands should be taking notice of.
Have you run a feeler gauge in that Model 69 cylinder gap? Curious about what it's set at.
Good video. I love seeing the power of the magnums
Good review, Sam. Perfect bullet choice, too. For .44 caliber defense loads I prefer 215 gr Lyman SWC cast bullets in the .44 spcl at about 800 fps in my 3-inch Rossi. In my 4-inch 44 mag for everyday shooting I load 250 gr SWC cast bullets at 900 fps cast 1:20 tin to lead. I've never carried the 44 mag because of the weight but it is the most accurate handgun I've ever owned, and that's saying a lot.
That was a lot of shots with the .44 mag. No wonder the distance shots were wandering. 75 yards is a pretty good distance.
It's just how they impacted. I am used to .357 Mag 125 gr that hits point of aim. With 158 gr they shot over the target with a normal hold.
@@GunSam My .44 mag beats me up a bit.
Excellent comparison. I think I might look for a box or two of the Remington 158s for my Combat Magnims - the 158s overall were not reported to be as destructive to K-frame forcing cones and I like the way it expanded. Wouldn’t shy away from carrying that round on trails to avoid becoming part of the food chain. The 44 Mag channel was pretty impressive in terms of permanent cavity as I’ve seen in a while. Sort of reminiscent of the old Phil Engledrum “Handgun Tests” and “Pistolero” still photos of early gel testing by someone other than the FBI.
great video Sam
Enjoyed show. My EDC is a 686p with a 3 inch barrel. Easy to conceal, excellent weapon. I have started carrying my 629 custom deluxe with a 6.5 barrel. The 629 is a excellent visual deterrent. I have replaced all mim parts in both guns. Tuned actions and triggers. That 629 is the most accurate due to barrel length. I have some Buffalo Bore anti-personal 180gr SJH. Quite a round! It's a 44 round you might like due to velocity? My gosh at the expansion which is what got my attention. With my Super Blackhawk with a 7.5 barrel its velocity is impressive!
Love the 4 inch barrel version of the 686.
Great looking rounds
Outstanding testing! Really cool seeing these 2 side by side in such detail. I bet those rounds are starting to wobble pretty bad and running slow past 50 yards, so it makes sense you struggled some at 75 yards. Considering a 69 to go with the couple 629s I currently have.
Thats a Great Choice, The Remington HTP Versions, hickock 45 seems to have a love affair with SW and Colt, he won''t even shoot through a Taurus Revolver !! i like your ammo choice 👍
First shots on both calibers straight to the spine, good shots!
What I been waiting for
Hi gun Sam. Awsome now your talking . Two of the best. I have 2 357 mags. A ruger Blackhawk 7" barrel, ruger security 6 4" barrel. I hunt with the Blackhawk. Carry the security 6. My 44 is a ruger super Blackhawk hunter. . This is my sweet shooting baby. I'm shooting 240 grn hard cast handloads. At max Mr 4227 powder. I shot stem to stern through a Pennsylvania white tail. Last fall. These are both very excellent cartridges. God bless awsome.
That S&W 69 is too much gun for me! Zoinks!
The UMC 180gr .44 Mag load is loaded really hot. I'd be curious to see if you get any expansion from a softpoint bullet
th-cam.com/video/U2-wh9OqIZw/w-d-xo.html
Those are the "flamethrowers"!... 💥😉
Great video. Tks.
to this day, the SJHP is the only bullet design that NEVER FAILS under any conditions and through any barrier. Even reverse hollow points that never fail past barriers, are so velocity dependent that once it passes a barrier, its just a FMJ. The SJHP isnt new and sexy, but show me any other design that will nearly double diameter under any conditions and any barrier. Rem HTP is still the king for revolver ammo! But their HTP semi ammo laggs to new sexy designs...
I have arthritis in my hands too. It started bothering my in my late 30’s and now I’m 47. It has absolutely affected my guitar playing, I can only play three or four songs before my hands hurt too much, but it has also recently began to affect my shooting. I just don’t “squeeze” like I used to. Thankfully I can still rack a slide and I can hold any rifle steady off hand. But the day will come…
I don't know if you have arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, mine is rheumatoid and after being on Rinvoq, it has helped a lot. I'm 44 and got RA in my late 30's and I play guitar as well. I stopped playing for years, but after being on this med for 6 months or so I started playing again. Even got my finger pads back lol. th-cam.com/video/-xxe6sja7d0/w-d-xo.html
@@GunSam I’m not sure what O have either but I will definitelyask my doc about that Rinvoq! Thanks
Nice video. good shooter. well done.
I had a model 69 and wanted to love it brutal recoil and all, but the first range trip the action locked up and I couldn't pull the trigger or even the hammer. I could open the cylinder, but couldn't fire it anymore. Sent it back and bought a 7.5 inch Ruger Redhawk 44 mag that came with the heavy duty ruger branded leather holster.
Very hard to beat either one of these cartridges.
Sam, you do shoot your revolvers very well at the shorter distances. Here is an idea for you (if you haven't already done this)...pick any self defense caliber and shoot lead, FMJ, semi jacketed, and jacketed hollow points and compare the projectiles. All should be the same or as close in weight as possible.
What you missed some shots with a pistol at 75 yards LMAO. Great review. Thank you!
Those HTP's are as good as any "self defense" rounds produced.
I put the Hogue XFR Tamer grips on my Model 69 and it made a huge difference in felt recoil (i.e., pain level).
I'm impressed at your shooting of these magnum calibers. I don't have arthritis, and I'm younger than you, but I can't handle .44 Magnum recoil at all. As for .357 Magnum, I could manage from a Taurus 608, but the S&W 586 I replaced the 608 with was very uncomfortable to shoot .357 out of. I got rid of that.
Good comparison video! 😊
I would like to see a comparison between 45 Colt and 44 Magnum, especially with my carry load the Barnes 45 Long Colt 200gr XPB HP!
Excellent old school performance. Can't complain or argue with these good results. These 44 rounds would be pretty decent for whitetail I would think. Thank you.
Great video, as usual, sir!
Awesome wheelgun stuff Sam! Love the 686 and this makes me want a day off so bad to put more lead thru it. Good choice on the arthritis excuse. I dont have it yet but i dont want it either 🤣
The old school SJHP bullets have always seemed to do well. I would venture to guess that these loads are or were the most widely used by handgun hunters in their respective cartridges. May have been supplanted by Hornady XTP by now, but they are still excellent. Probably still my go to for a woods/trail load in a 357. My only 44 mag handgun is a 7.5" SBH, so it is basically a range toy. Been wanting a more carryable DA 44, and u have interested me in the S&W M69. And since i have a couple of L frame holsters already, it makes sense. But if i could find a good price on a 3" 629 (or 657😁).......
Good video.
I think those were designed for deer hunting.
Gun Sam is reading my mind!.........How is that possible????? Has he installed a chip in my brain??????
No. But if you use wireless Apple earbuds, Apple is sending your brain's electrical activity to a database. No joke.
The 265 grain Dangerous Game load by Buffalo Bore fits the cylinder of the model 69. It is the go to load for big and nasty attitude game worldwide.
That's a handful. I have shot it before. That load completely breaks my support hand grip on each shot.
@@GunSam which is why Mag-Na-Port and the Hogue Recoil grip for all round butt S&W grip frame sizes from K up to Z is mandatory.
While .357 mag was my 1st love, & both .44 mag & .357 mag were some of the 1st guns I ever shot (the 1st was a 1911 .45 in the USN), I don't really have a practical place for either. I live in central FL, where 9-10 months out of the year i'm wearing shorts, a T, & flip flops. The most likely critter I would encounter are coyotes, so .38 spl or 9mm are good for that. I'm not a big guy (5'9", 170 lbs), so it would be borderline ridiculous for me to try to cc either of those guns. 12ga. is my go to for home defense, so all that's left is my sentimentality for those 2 calibers. Note: I DO, technically, have a .357 in the form of an M&P 340, but I'd have to really dislike myself to shoot .357 mag from it.
At the moment I only have 1 revolver. But I am craving them more than any other firearm out there❗
Hi my name is Nicholas welcome to Revolvers Anonymous 🤣🤣🤣
Beware the man who has only one gun- he probably knows how to use it. The 357 revolver is the most versatile handgun you can own, due to the wide variety of ammo at 4 distinct power levels. I started with a 4"686 in 1993 (dating myself, lol). It is the last gun i would part with. It ride some miles with me in the first year and a half of my LE career, until i bought a P229 (probably the next to last gun i would get rid of).
I remember I saw .357 magnum bullets with pointy tips, looking like rifle bullets. It was a long time ago and I can't find them anymore 😔

I'm a 357 Magnum, 357 SIG, 45 kind of guy. But my 44 Magnum friend doesn't understand what you mean by "follow-up shot."
the terminal performance is high
TTPIH ammo lol
Not bad, but not quite as good as I expected. If the prices are decent, I’ll pick some up otherwise I’m probably sticking with the federal Hydra shock for a 44.
I’ve gotta get a 44 !
Use a dremel and some flitz metal polish and lightly polish the chambers and you won't have sticky shells. Be very sparing, doesn't take much.
I do not have sticky shells. The extractor isn't .44 Magnum length for some reason, or just barely .44 Magnum length. No polishing will help that.
Remington HTP has gotten more powerful
Nice shooting. I don't think you can go wrong with either of those rounds. What's your estimated water jug to ballistic gel ratio? I'm getting 3-4 jugs with .38+p handloads with decent expansion (.600"ish)
The thing with water, is it only correlates when a bullet expands, and water being a perfect medium has a higher rate of successful expansion. But with full expansion, I would estimate through plain gallon jugs that .60" expansion would be about the 4th water jug. I recall doing tests in the past with plain water jugs and number 4 was the common one bullets like that stopped in. If I had to guess, 4 full water jugs with no dent out the back of 4, is roughly 15" of this clear gel penetration.
@@GunSam thanks for the reply! Maybe sometime I'll get some gel and try it. Or bump into you and give you a box to check out. I run all over the state so it could happen.
👍👍
Honestly with the rheumatoid arthritis I don't see you carrying the short 44 mag most of the time, and if you needed a 44 mag then concealment won't be your biggest concern and you could use a chest rig and pack even a 6 inch gun easily.
Pretty sure whoever was behind the target would have serious issues.
Any guess about the sticky 44 cylinders of the 69? A tad rough cylinders?
Try a bigger 44 mag like a 629 classic with a 5 inch or 6.5 inch barrel. It'll be easier on your hands.
I've owned one. I don't recall the recoil being that much better. Model 629 6"
Enjoyed but disagree on SJHP vs JSP. I've noticed SJHP routinely expand very well when fast enough. JSP just flatten a little unless really pushed fast from a rifle.
Please test Federal 357G (180 gr SJHP) Has always expanded for me even from a snubbie. (@925 fps) It pushes your hand but has less blast and flame than 158's and way less than 125's. I wish they sold this bullet so I could load my own!
I never said it was exactly the same, I was just making a point. I have seen SJSP pulled from big animals before and they looked basically like these expanded hollow points with a little less size, but it takes more bone mass to do it to the soft points.
The 357 expanded nicely despite being somewhat slow due to it's heavier grain. I wonder how a lighter grain bullet would do going 1,500fps or more
4 videos back I got about that velocity with 125 gr.
Sam, you mentioned soft points in this excellent video… Ive always found the American Eagle 357 158gn SP to be a good shooting woods load. Be cool to see it in the real world gel test.
I think I may have tested it, but it was in a snub nose.
I love Underwood and Buffalo Bore but with these two SJHP loads plus Remingtons 125gr SJHP 357mag there's really no better self defense ammo better...especially with the SJHP "performance".
I feel the same way. At a certain point like 350 ft lbs on a .35 cal bullet, you are set for adequate penetration and expansion no matter what happens. More power just makes it better.
Options outside Buffalo Bore are nice to have, if you don't like BB prices.
@lifted_above In 357 Mag I only use Remington UMC 125gr SJHP 357mag or Remington 158gr SJHP 357mag. 357Sig, 38Spl, 10mm and even 40S&W all I buy is Buffalo Bore and Underwood is all I own...price isn't a problem it's just no ammunition comes close to the results of the Remington 125gr &158gr SJHP 357mag and 185gr SJHP 44mag not even anything from Underwood or Buffalo Bore.
@@nicholasroberts9618 Whatever works for your budget!
I don't think Underwood or Buffalo Bore use SJHP type bullets in any of their loads. I don't recall DoubleTap, Grizzly, or Corbon using them either. Remington has been improving its products a lot lately, very happy about whats happening to that storied brand lately. Can't say much about their firearms.
@lifted_above I just reread my response, I wasn't trying to come off crass, my apologies! I agree with you Remington has been getting much better! Underwood has a couple of SJHP(Nosler) rounds, Sam tested them, a 158gr 357Mag. and a 200gr? 44Mag!

Hey Sam, should I keep my buffalo bore 125gr tactical low-recoil short barrels loads or return them for 158gr heavy 357 ? 4.2" barrel.
Federal law prohibits ammo returns lol. There's nothing wrong with either load. The 125 gr low recoil load very much reminded me of my handloads where a non-magnum powder is used, rather it's a fast burning powder. The felt recoil is less in a snub, but I found that load to shine in my 4" barrel as it has the recoil of a 9mm sort of, but still about 500 ft lbs energy if I recall. It is a good balanced load. The Buffalo Bore 158 gr is in the 700 ft lbs energy range, it's like a .44 Mag for energy but less recoil.
.357magnum more fast than .44magnum?
Lighter weight bullet. 🤷
Would you test the Federal 44 mag 180 gr power shok and the Corbon 44 mag 165 gr jhp?
I have tested the Federal already, actually planned on releasing it later today. No test of the Corbon
@@GunSam thank you, looking forward to it. Really interested in the fed and cb as sd loads.
1180 fps for a 240 gr 44mag???
Ok, but let's just be honest here. That is a low to medium power loading.
Standard full power 44 mag is 1400 fps with a 240 gr bullet. The Hornady 240gr Mag offering will get you closer at 1325 ftps.
The Hornady 240 gr gave me 1,222 FPS in this revolver. Either way, I find this power level to be perfect for a revolver like this model 69 as a defensive load. It's not like I need it for bear defense, in which case I wouldn't use a SJHP anyways.
@@GunSamFair enough. I wouldn't use full house loads for defense as well.
How about something closer, .41 and .44? 175 vs 180 and throw a 10 in for good measure. 😊
I refuse to get a .41 Magnum revolver. There's just not enough ammo choices to be worth it for ammo testing. Edit, and to clarify I don't mean ammo quantity but I mean variety. Like .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum come in a lot of various hollow point loads. The .41 Magnum has just a handful of variety and the rest is all target ammo of various brands.
True, I only remember a 175 silver tip and a 210 grain. Still wish I’d bought one back in the day. 👍🏻
@@GunSam
If Elmer Keith would have had a stronger SAA frame to work with when he was working up 45 Colt loads, probably .44magnum would have never come into existence, and .44 Special may have mostly gone away. Even when 44magnum was in existence later, Elmer was trying to make a case for 41 magnum. It's a great cartridge. Industry just doesn't think so.
This is a bit off topic, but, have you ever had any issues with the Smith and Wesson internal lock? I've been surveying my favorite wheel gunners on youtube, trying to give myself the greenlight to buy a 640 that's priced right but has the dreaded lock.
I have never had any issues on the locks. I have heard the stories about them, but never personally had an issue. I know there's also a kit for removing the lock and plugging the hole where the key hole was at. I don't remember who sold it, but it's a thing.
I had a 638 w/the internal lock that was never a problem.
@@GunSam Thanks! I'm seeing/hearing similar responses from everyone who a) seems to shoot revolvers frequently, and b) has youtube video evidence of themselves shooting revolvers frequently 😄
Get the 640 Pro Series. It has much better sights even dove tailed front and back so you could change them AND it has not lock.
642 I got to shoot WITH the lock ON.
I then replaced it with an app to market plug, no problems
Why shoot at 75 yards?
A charging polar bear attack. One in each shoulder and then one in the head. This leaves you (3) for the second one.
In probable you say ? Canadian geese are on this side of the northern border year round. Not a leap for polar bears to do the same.
When I started using the area I shoot at, the maximum range I could measure to a target on flat footing was 75 yards, that's why. Like I often say, when I do 75 yards it's just for fun because I like a challenge.
What about the .41 magnum?
What about it?
