The HIGHS and LOWS of Final Fantasy 16

  • My impressions after 20 hours of playing Final Fantasy 16. This game truly doubles down on its combat and narrative, delivering an immersive experience with intense battles and a gripping storyline. However, it also offers bare bones RPG elements and systems, creating a contrast between its high points and areas that feel a bit lacking.
Overall, my experience has been positive, and I can't wait to see how the rest of the game unfolds.
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more gaming content and updates on my journey through Valisthea. Let's discuss what makes this game special and where it falls short.

Pretty much agreed. It's a very well-made game. But while I'd like to think I'm willing to give a lot of leeway to the Final Fantasy series, it proved to me that I do want one to be an RPG. FF7 Rebirth really highlighted how much better things are with party mechanics.
And WHY does every boss just drop all the materials for the next weapon that you then have to go get it crafted? Just drop the sword at that point.

Slightly too repetitive, same boss music for near every fight. I was sick of it by Garuda. I was so looking forward to more compositions, but felt let down in the end, however what is on show IS good if you don't mind the repetition.

The Side Quests get really good in the end because the side quests operate on an interconnected thread.
The last two sidequests from the same quest givers in a thread are always great and emotionally impactful but unfortunately you have to play earlier quests from the quest givers to get to those last quests in their threads.
If you do ALL the side quests you get a great final quest with Jill

I really tried to like this game but i just couldn't , too many deal breakers : no weapons variety , only one single character in the entire game , scripted summons , terrible sidequest design , no minigames , clunky run mechanics and bad camera and field of view and lastly the game's performance is probably the worst ive seen in the series (at least in framerate mode) This for me is ultimately one of the worst games in the series .

Like you said.. "you dont want ff being fifa." I feel like you're right about this game contrasting. Knowing tje ff franchise, hopefully they learn from the downs you were talking about and listen to their fans to make 17 more immersive and complex. I feel like thats just what they do. Also, when i was watching yesterdays stream, you said something like "what is this dirge?" And i do see simmilarities of the game in this beautiful piece of art. Cause thats how i feel this game is..ART. Some folk will appreciate what they have and some wont.

Solid review. I was so into this game the first half and was recommending it to all my friends. By the second half, I was telling those same friends "Nevermind! It's not really worth it." But because they were playing the exciting first half, they argued with me. When they reached the second half, many just put the game down. It suffers from pacing and editing issues.
The side quests become very boring, and you start to see the pattern. Go to a location, do a simple dungeon crawl, have a great boss fight, go back to base, and do too many boring side quests.
The story and dialoge over explains the same concepts and then repeats those explanations. Slavery and magic bad. Got it! I don't need 20 hours of side quest dialoge to explain it again.
Jill is relegated to being Clive's therapist. If there is an excuse to have her sit out a fight, then the writers will take it. It reminds me of Sakura from Naruto, where you keep hoping she will get her moment, but it never happens.
I did enjoy the main villain. I won't go into more in case of spoilers.

In regard to Jill, the writers did her the way they did because they clearly don't like her. If you pay attention to the female characters in this game, it's a bit evident that the writers were being sexist when making FF16. All of the women were done so dirty. Tbf, all of the characters in FF16 were done dirty but they did Jill and even other female characters the dirtiest because they're women. Also notice that when Joshua finally joins Clive, Jill and Jote get pushed aside and sidelined completely. Whenever I see female characters done like this in any kind of media, it's no question to me that the writer is being sexist. They'll deny it to peoples' faces obviously because they don't want to look bad, but they show their true colors through their writing. Nobody can convince me otherwise, I'm sorry. I've seen this too much in media and that's not a coincidence if you ask me. I sometimes feel awful for liking FF16 at all, I feel ashamed of myself for supporting sexist writers.

Solid review my man, honestly I found myself frustrated playing through the first 3rd or so. The Combat is top tier, but I was definitely wanting much more from the side mechanics and your review helped me realize that. I think I need to go back to it with your mindset of focusing on enjoying what the game is focused on. Cheers!

I agree with you that you appreciate that XVI exists. I also share the opinion that Final Fantasy is good because they don't stay the same in every iteration of the mainline series. There will be some parts that I have to adapt to, and that's okay. Of course, that doesn't mean that it cannot be criticized.

I agree that Final Fantasy as a series is strong because it tries new things. As much as I LOVE FF16, I also don't want every FF game moving forward to be like 16. I really want to see Final Fantasy 17 be in a traditional turn based format, in the style of Octopath Traveler.

This game story wise is amazing. Even the concept of the summons being transformations is refreshingly new while still providing us with the summons we all know and love.

I agree with this. The beginning of the game up through Cid's death was 9/10 at least. With Cid out of the party, 90% of the interractions were stiff and uninspired. Jill is incredibly bad. As the game went on, the highs became higher and the lows became lower. Overall I was just disappointed the momentum from the beginning and the incredible interplay of Clive and Cid wasn't mauntained.

Jills set up as a deeply traumatised weapon of destruction was definitley a let down since she litterally showed no sign of character change after her revenge arch. Jill was sweet and her romance with Clive was believable, cute and ultimatley heartbreaking.
But like compare her to Tifa, Yuna and Rinoa. Very different women at the end of their arch vs the start.

I thought the game was fine from a gameplay mechanic standpoint, although I feel that FF7 remake and Rebirth were better just mechanic wise. Story wise.........i'm a bit conflicted I really liked the first like 1/3 of the game but then the rest of the story kind of devolved into kind of.......'meh' till the end. I've certainly seen worse stories in RPG's and other Final Fantasy games, I guess I just wished they could have taken what I really liked in the first 1/3 and kept it going till the end.

I loved the game, but it needed weapon variety, at least 2-3 optional dungeons and it would've been cool to see status effects on a timer/cooldown you could use items for. I think weapon variety adding the ability to switch between weapons and combo attacks with the eikons would've been great. The story and music are top notch though. It oozes FF

  • @MoreLimitless_
    @MoreLimitless_ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I've said this in my video recently for FF16, but to me I define the game as flawed greatness. The thing with it's development is actually that it was the smoothest dev of any mainline FF in the past 15 years. The reason why they chose to focus on narrative and action here so much was because of the negative reception of those very same aspects from FF15. Yoshi-P had stated multiple times how they didn't want to have a narrative that was disjointed like the launch version of 15, and the combat in that game was also awkward to play so they made sure to get a person who knows how to create action combat games for 16. A lot of the dev decisions for 16 was a direct response to criticisms from 15, however, they ended up creating mistakes of their own as a result of trying to focus too hard in perfecting those aspects of the game, as well as their design philosophy coming from FF14 that it ended up spreading the rest of the game thin. It's also worth mentioning that another reason why the other apects of the game like questing, and rpg elements are very underbaked is also because of just how expensive the Eikon fights really were. Almost every boss fight is top tier and some of the craziest I've experienced in any game, but you would have to think, those fights are damn expensive to produce, and there are a handful of them.

I grew up in the Golden age of jrpgs, Chrono trigger, Final fantasy 6, etc... I understand the need to take Final fantasy into a new direction, however, this was the first Final fantasy game that I literally could not finish. It was just too bland. Not to mention I like my optional content, like hidden characters hidden bosses.. the equipment system was absolutely awful. Crafting didn't need to exist at all. Pretty much every side quest was super boring.. I could go on for a while, but let's just say I wasn't a fan of this one

I really started to feel the lack of depth 50 percent in and had to force myself to finish. I wasnt connected to any of the characters and because there wasnt much in terms of rpg mechanics i didnt feel like any of the chnages in gear or abilities made much a difference which i think in an rpg is important. The boss fights were good though. Some of the in between fights of the bosses also felt way to repetitive

The general plot, the basic world design and concept of magic being poisionous to the user and Eikons existing = Fantastic. Just mindblowingly fantastic. Probably the best story in an FF game in my opinion and definitley the most interesting world to explore.
Gameplay, sidequests and the DLCs? = Meh. Just Meh. Not great not terrible.... They struck gold with FF7 remakes combat system, why not utilise that and let us play as Jill, Torgal and Joshua?
First DLC was just a glorified battle arena, not worth the money. Second DLC was slightly better storywise, just way to short.
    Still worth replaying.

@@CazaDeYork im saying it was a waste of resources spent on the world. this game was mostly cutscenes so it shouldve been a cgi film instead of a game. the combat and story was the only good thing yet most boss fights were 50 percent cutscenes with buttons laid over them to make you think youre playing it. this game being mostly cutscenes backs up my opinion that they shouldnt have made this into a game at all. regardless of the time and effort put into the combat, the rest of the "game aspects" were absent. no customization, no party, no rpg mechanics, drab fetch quests, linear and empty world, and ps2 character animations for everything outside of combat.

It was alright, ok story, but nearly 100% of the side quests are generic fetch/kill quests and are forgettable. I can only think of 1 side quest atm, and I’d just finished it. Bland open world that’s empty. The gears basically useless. You get a slight upgrade every so often. Doesn’t really feel you have much choice or freedom. For me, it’ll prob go the route of ff15 for me where I can’t even remember any of the story or how that played out. Not too much is memorable other than boss fights.

He knew before the DLC even came to be that people wanted more on the other characters in FF16, and he lied about Jill in order to lure people into buying it but it didn't work and hardly anybody played it. I'm glad that they made little money on the DLC, that's what he gets for lying to us.

Idk if I subscribe to that but I don't blame people who felt that way. Jill's story next to Tifa lacks a bit of "punch" but her story with Clive is one of the best written love stories in FF.
The combat in this game like you said is unlike anything else in FF. Just absolutely sick. The bulk of the quests and extra dialogue are probably the most mundane parts. I'm glad you're enjoying this game overall and I think in the end, this game will age extremely well.
