I really hope Tim doesn't read comments on his older videos because what I'm about to type is borderline psychopathic behavior. A brief explanation: I watched this video on release, never having played a Final Fantasy in my life OR watching any videos about it. The franchise never interested me, but I love Tim's writing - so here I am. I liked the video! In March 2021, PS4 announced FF7 Remake would be free for PS+ Users. I figured I'd dip my toe into the franchise. I have since allowed it to DEVOUR me for the last 3 weeks. I beat the main story, came back, and watched this video in it's entirety for a 2nd time. I have now beat the game on hard mode, gotten every single trophy, attained the platinum, admit it's probably my favorite game of All-Time during the 8th generation of consoles - and am now watching it for a 3rd time. There are so many small tidbits that I appreciate each time upon re-watching that I want to make a meticulously detailed timestamp list so I can easily jump to those parts of video on a whim. 2:45 - Tim OBLITERATES an old paycheck man 10:48 - Prevailing despite unfathomable circumstances 18:10 - The girl Tim liked was a hater 20:12 - The man who waited 12 hours in line for Final Fantasy 12 wanted a Final Fantasy 7 remake - the Philosophical Nightmare was born 24:50 - "He's got toasters for hands" 27:00 - Creative desperation led to Final Fantasy as a series, always fresh, more like a fashion brand than a film franchise 30:20 - Elevator pitch-able situation, FF13 requires burj khalifa elevator breaking down twice to explain it lmao 35:38 - Small gradual changes to post-battle dialogue amongst Cloud and Barret 41:00 - Who wants to be good at working alone? 42:43 - "Looks like you guys were having fun up there" 45:50 - I absolutely adored and loved the transitions to behind Cloud's back after every scene as well, so wonderfully done 51:48 - Tseng 53:12 - Chocobo Sam hahaha 55:25 - I can't think of a story I loved where I didn't love the characters. Excellent point. 57:21 - LMAO 58:15 - "Can we STOP talking about how big her breasts are and START talking about how small her materia slots are" 59:09 - You can get a prude to laugh at a curse by utilizing them with extreme restraint 1:04:20 - Cloud stop ruining the food court please 1:05:00 - Why do people in the slums refer to their homes as the slums? 1:10:43 - Tim single-handedly smites every myth about the length of Midgar in the original FF7 1:23:00 - Anyone who asks for a "Vertical Slice" is an idiot who doesn't understand how cakes are baked. 1:27:54 - A total of 16 minutes and 14 seconds climbing ladders, only NARCS slide down ladders 1:38:43 - I too loved getting lost in Chapter #6, super fun and so distinct from the previous 2 chapters 1:42:56 - I also never saw Aerith get mad at you if you fail all the dance sequences. I haven't even looked it on up YT. What freak would for completions sake? 1:43:21 - "Tifa's wet flesh" 1:50:05 - Are you even reading this? 1:51:00 - I guarantee my time searching for trinkets must have been closer to an hour than 46 minutes. So many areas where chests SHOULD have been placed. 1:51:32 - Tifa's Baby Uncharted Segment 1:52:35 - TIFA AND AERITH ZOOMIN' 2:00:09 - RIP Secret of Mana 2:08:02 - I want to know more about the 94% discovery 2:13:19 - I love how needlessly honest Tim is 2:17:15 - PLEASE DEVELOPERS LISTEN TO HIM, I wasted MP on a Hard Mode run so often just to get rid of that painful red filter that still persists OUTSIDE of combat 2:22:51 - LMAO 2:27:00 - This is also something I argue with myself about. I loved playing FF7 again and knowing what to say to Don Corneo before the options were stripped from you. But the discovery of having that happen to you was also a blast? 2:30:22 - One of the greatest observations in the entire video 2:30:58 - LMAO 2:41:15 - Another outstanding observation 2:44:56 - :( 2:53:20 - An amazing anecdote about how The Leftovers and Doctor Who spoiled the twist of the FF7 Remake 2:55:08 - I have played this statement back about 20 times. I still don't understand what Tim is saying. I'm an idiot. 2:56:05 - Take on the ending. We got here, not by any soul-searching but just... getting here. 3:01:51 - "GLAD WE NO LONGER HAVE A RAT PROBLEM" I love this video. I have devoured it. Thank you, Tim.
I'm taking a swig of my Mountain Dew Baja Blast for every time I hear: - A "WOW! - An "OOPS!" - An unexpectedly flowery adjective - Tim catching me off guard with a deeply personal anecdote that leaves me feeling pensive about the nature of videogames as "literature"
Probably unnecessary for me to say this, but I'm going to do it anyway: Video games are not literature. Video games are art. Literature is also art! This, however, does not make video games literature any more than it makes paintings music. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
@@ValkyrieTiara what about those paintings made by that artist with synesthesia? how does that qualify? its a guy who makes music out of your face and uses color according to the notes of the song (B# being green for example) to paint something that represents your features in an abstract way is it just a painting with extra steps? does it combine disciplines in a way that renders it both a piece of music and a graphic art piece?
I come from a post FFXVI world. I can confirm the devs went ahead and made a breezy action game where items and gear are basically handed to you at a regular pace and scrounging is useless.
IMO ff16 suffered for it AND watching this video on ff7 remake beforehand made me realize what was happening too early. All the side quests feeling exactly like ff14 side quests did not help
@@Draconilian FF16 side quest design feels so baffling after FF7R. The quests in FF7R aren't great either, but at least there's a concise amount of them, and you get something meaningful in terms of story by doing all of them. FF16 just vomits sidequests, each of them being textbook JRPG pace-breaking faffing about; and there's so many of them!

THANK YOU for recognising Masashi Hamauzu and the FFXIII music. He has been my favourite composer for over 4 years now and has been a huge part of important choices I’ve made around my late high school and early university life, leading me to the composition route I’m on atm.

52:58 “Some of these NPCs look like they fell out of Final Fantasy XI and are trying to treat it like Spring Break. Some of the NPCs look like they’d call the ESRB if a Dreamcast character moved into their neighborhood.” I am HOWLINGGGGGGGGGGG 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Okay I managed to watch all of it within the first 24 hours. Really well made. I am impressed that this review does not get boring tbh. 3 hours is a lot of time after all. But your structure makes it interesting and easy to listen to throughout. I enjoyed listening to all of it. I also quite enjoy your general approach to reviewing games. A game is more than a 5 minutes of checking off features with a numbered rating in the end. So I like seeing someone actually appreciate the art form for what it can be. Also: your shirts are dank.
Who else wants to see a review of Racing Lagoon? I couldn’t think of a title more worthy of an Action Button review. One of the deepest, craziest, most bizarre games I’ve ever played, and it’s finally getting attention since it’s translation.
As a person who is almost 40 (coming up in 10 months and 6 days time [give or take a couple of days since I can't actually do math]) and one who has spent a majority of his 20's being told by old dudes what life is about, I, too, take pleasure in the fact that most of those advisors are wrong and/or now dead.
@@FromWyoming Well, it was a poor attempt at comedy by writing an exaggerated response to something he said on the video. That said, I appreciate your sincere response and confirm that, yes, the last two years have leveled me out. I'm still glad that they're dead, though.
“Camera check your corners for chachki pockets” is possibly my favorite sentence ever. And it’s something I’m absolutely conditioned to do in just about every video game.
his ff6 written review takes this phenomenon to new heights. i am almost completely sure it's the only videogame review that I've read which recounts what the reviewer's brother ate for breakfast, half a week after said reviewer was adjacent to a conversation with Jared from Subway, which itself took place a year before the game was released
I wish the party members would actually tell you "Did you really need to get that Hi-Potion?" as a friend's life is on the line. I should have gotten a trophy for all of the instances I was prevented from going a certain way, for I am.....a trinket addicted puppet. Anyways, great review. Just had to comment and confess I watched the whole thing. You're someone that's a little bit older than me that can appreciate this game and the original to a degree that I thoroughly respect.
The amount of effort that went into this is staggering! You raised a lot of good points in an entertaining way, like with how trinket-hunting often interfered with the narrative's pace. Also, I loved your shout-out to how well-written Aerith is.
Although your future videos may be shorter, I like the idea behind the disc gimmick. Not only was it a fun concept, but segmenting your review made it easier to follow. Thanks for all your hard work!
I rarely bother to comment on videos these days, but i just wanted to say a whole big heap of thank you. This was an incredible deep dive, insightful, funny, meta, and the attention to detail and unique takes on the games i love so very dearly that I have come to expect from only you Tim. I always feel like you are a little in my head when you talk about the games we've played, though you articulate it far better than i ever good but i never find myself disagreeing with you and oftentimes feel you put your 'thumb on' an aspect of a game I've failed to articulate. Ive MISSED this content up to now, so im very excited to go binge all the wonderful other videos you've made
Me: Wow the Irishman is so long, I dunno if I can deal with a movie that long outside the movie theater Also Me: 3 hours 20 minutes of Tim Rogers talking about a video game, hell yea let's watch it all in one sitting
WOW. NOW THAT'S E-SPORTS! Proud of this absolute actualization of self-aware, thorough, and honest art criticism. Good job Tim! I have gotten to that point in my sincere love of your work that I'm kind of annoying about it; I don't even notice before it's too late. For Fans of Tim Rogers, I would deeply recommend reading his Medium piece entitled, "Just Like Hamburger, Exactly Like Hamburger". I can't wait for Tennis Monster!! Keep up the good work and take care of your self!
This is obnoxious but... the staff folds in on itself and Aerith puts in her pocket. There is an animation for it when you play as her. Edit: chapter 17 to be specific.
I just finished this today. THE BEST piece of media about a video game I've ever consumed. The fact that it's just episode 1 of a series fills me with the same "I don't deserve this but it's exactly what I want" feeling that I got with Twin Peaks season 3.
we just witnessed the best critic from the littest piece of art our darkest times have produced, all this genius shared, lovely, everything in its right place.
Sleeping to this every night to prepare for Rebirth next month. Gonna have to do another remake playthrough to get in the mood. Hopefully I don't suddenly drop dead before it comes.
"Sorry, I like the English better" THANK YOU! I've been playing the Trails series, whose English translations are phenomenal through and through and when I got to the games with voice acting, I was able to pick up a decent amount of the Japanese dialogue and yeah, it wasn't a literal translation, which meant that it actually had expressiveness and naturality in the English language that a literal translation wouldn't have. It's great. So, I make the mistake of looking on the Steam community for the one I'm currently playing and there's a mod for it to give it a more literal translation, where they use things like senpai to make it feel "more like a sub than a dub" and it pained me so much, only more to see comments that the US publisher should have done this from the start. Just... so much work clearly went into the translation and it's so good and to hear gamers bemoan that the dialogue they're reading, in English, isn't Japanese enough, really got under my skin.
Literally shorter than the DOOM one, & that game is a thousand years old, & is mostly about going through hallways shooting Hellspawn (well, obviously it's more than that if you've seen his review), & this video is literally comparing two 50-plus hour games that he's played through 20 times each (BUT *HOW?* HOW DOES THIS MAN *LIVE?* I WANT TO PAY HIM FOR LIFE TRAINING LESSONS🤣), & it's somehow *SHORTER* than the DOOM one 😂
James Tyler just finished the Midgar portion on the og it literally ends the same way besides all the new stuff and the new stuff doesn’t change what will happen I’m sure it’s just a loop for vets to question what will happen, I highly doubt they will just take out what made the og what it was, they’re just setting up for it to hurt more.
@@jamestyler3606 heres something to cheer you up...no other game on ps4 has 2 disks...i think the reason for the data disk is so the next part loads insert disk 2 and that choice at the end matters to weather you play the original or the save the world version. I doubt you'll read this but I've been binge watching everything on this channel in reverse chronologically and I'm in the middle of this episode finally. I just want to say I really get what you're doing and can relate to many of your anecdote from 90s Indianapolis to obscure Japanese games. A good chunk of my family lives in Indy mostly west and northside. My mom grew up in Speedway (a stones throw away from the actual track) and my Dad grew up in Broad Ripple. Going to Circle Center with huge arcade downtown was a yearly summer event for me in the 90s as a kid. Always have to stop at White Castle specifically the one in Avon! As a teenager in the 00s I visited many game forums and got to play / master the classics. I don't want to bother you with the specifics but like you Dragon Quest V became a quick favorite of mine and still is. It's amazing that it's framed over the heroes life and you can make important monumental life decisions which has different outcomes. Starting out as a naive child and seeing your character grow was way ahead of it's time! The music is the best in the series too. I hope all the hours I watched with TH-cam Premium account afforded you a beer or whatever indulgencent equivalent you enjoy!
I feel I deserve a bonus trophy for watching this all the way through. Love ya, Tim! This was a joy to watch, and the ultimate punchline at the end was the perfect way to end a 3 hour video.
@@InVINCEab13 This actually makes things a little easier, since I will no longer have to wonder and check to see if Kotaku's new videos feature Tim Rogers. With Action Button, I can watch with confidence, as it will always be Tim Rogers-levels of quality.
Great video man. Had no idea who you were or how you ended up in my feed, but thankfully you did. Looks like you’ll be adding a new patreon member with videos like this. Agree with most of what you said, however this game is now an “all timer” for me. Probably because of the nostalgia though. I agree with practically every point you had in this review..which should equate to a good game, not an all timer, but...nostalgia. I was a freshman in high school when the OG came out. Game just hit me emotionally. Haven’t had that feeling from a game in years and haven’t theorized about a game like this since Bloodbourne. So yeah. Every generation there’s been a game or 2 that hits me hard. And since the ps3 only 4 games I cared about getting the platinum trophy. Now 5. Ps1 - ff7, Castlevania SOTN ps2 - GTA VC, ffx, MGS snakeeater PS3 - dark souls (changed my outlook on future games) Ps4 - Witcher 3, hollow knight, Bloodbourne and now FF7R Cool story Hansel. Keep up the great work.

Why not? It’s really good! At the very least try the demo. It’s up for free to download off of the PS Store if you have a PS4. It’s also probably coming to PC in 2021 and possibly XB1 and/or XSX.
If you liked this review I kindly invite you to look for his first Dragon Quest XI video review that you can find on Kotaku’s channel (he later did a second video talking about the DQXI Switch port). In my opinion is just as good but it’s “only” half an hour long. I promise you that by the end of it if you went in without knowing what DQ was you’ll come out of it at least politely interested in the franchise. That review reached 1 million views for a reason.
The amount of work you've put into this video is palpable! I'm actually rather upset that I'll have run out of your videos to watch in a few weeks lmao. Would you consider doing a 57 hour review of Die Hard Trilogy on the PlayStation 1? I'm sure you're already working on it as I tap! Yevon bless you, Tim, this is some Yevon-tier content! Xx

I'm not really a massive gamer beyond some of the FF games but, I want to hear more about the industry and game design thanks to this guy. Amazing video. Thanks.
Just finished ff7r last night! I'm not on Twitter so I didn't know that you branched out from Kotaku. Congrats for going independent! I love how self indulgent and lavish your reviews are. I can only imagine the insane amount of time, effort and thought you put into this. On a side note when I was playing the side quests for orphanage I thought that the kid with sunglasses looked like you and was like "that's kid Tim Rogers!" because you know, you're 40 but you still look like a pretentious kid. I proceeded to chuckle to myself while realizing how much of a lame nerd I am.
you know . . . you can say nice stuff to someone without including an equal proportion of tiny insults! it's ok! i won't judge you poorly for it also that's not how you spell my last name lol

This is your masterpiece. I feel strongly that there is nothing more important in the art world than this specific kind of video game critique, and perhaps no one has streamlined it in as digestible a format. I didn't play the remake out of a spiteful hate for what the company has grown to represent, but Tim has shown me here that intellect isn't always synonymous with prejudice. If there was ever someone to make me actually question the merits of this work, it was you. Furthermore, enormous ideas are condensed into the smallest random throwaway lines in this video. This is so absolutely dense despite its length. I'm both inspired and in awe and slightly depressed by the amount of work that has gone into this. It's made me very reflective of my own life. I will be rewatching this again in the future without a doubt, and am hungrily anticipating what you do next.

Probably unnecessary for me to say this, but I'm going to do it anyway:
Video games are not literature. Video games are art. Literature is also art! This, however, does not make video games literature any more than it makes paintings music.

Repeating is rewinding so you failed the method of watching action button AND and you told him. Shame... Double Shame...
For reference, the timestamp is 08:50.
[Coury] I think I've watched the full video in segments at least 3 times through in the last week. I keep coming back to it, hitting a random place on the progress bar and become enraptured all over again.

I am afraid that I am not nearly articulate enough to leave a Tim Rogers level comment in this thread so all I can say is... thank you.
We’re witnessing history being made
Who else wants to see a review of Racing Lagoon? I couldn’t think of a title more worthy of an Action Button review. One of the deepest, craziest, most bizarre games I’ve ever played, and it’s finally getting attention since it’s translation.
As a person who is almost 40 (coming up in 10 months and 6 days time [give or take a couple of days since I can't actually do math]) and one who has spent a majority of his 20's being told by old dudes what life is about, I, too, take pleasure in the fact that most of those advisors are wrong and/or now dead.

his ff6 written review takes this phenomenon to new heights. i am almost completely sure it's the only videogame review that I've read which recounts what the reviewer's brother ate for breakfast, half a week after said reviewer was adjacent to a conversation with Jared from Subway, which itself took place a year before the game was released
Thank you internet, for allowing this man to do this for a living.
TH-cam user luv4Aerith would like to officially endorse this glowingly Aerith-positive review.
This is obnoxious but... the staff folds in on itself and Aerith puts in her pocket. There is an animation for it when you play as her.
Edit: chapter 17 to be specific.
That whole story about his boss’ joke and how Tim is in charge is one of the funniest things that can be said.
I just finished this today. THE BEST piece of media about a video game I've ever consumed. The fact that it's just episode 1 of a series fills me with the same "I don't deserve this but it's exactly what I want" feeling that I got with Twin Peaks season 3.

Except the ending which ruins the theme of loss.
James Tyler You’re dumb as hell. It doesn’t at all. The story isn’t even complete and you assume it’ll automatically remove that when it won’t.
