someone left a comment on the other video saying that "it sounds like a song that desperately wants to exist but doesn't know how" and I absolutely LOVE that
No other track I’ve heard captures what it’s like to work in a DAW, trying out sounds, looking for something that sparks your interest, until you finally find your flow and it all comes easy. It’s like you’re listening to Porter coming up with the song in the studio.
It's in the songs name a "dull scythe" a once good tool in bad shape still being used and being sharpened after ever find. What was once dull was sharpened enough to make it useable again.
Dullscythe is such a fitting name for a song like this, as a scythe is a tool used to harvest crops and therefore, bring life. I like to think the metaphor of a "dull scythe" means feeling frustrated and limited by your tools and/or your surroundings. This song follows a journey through struggle, just like trudging on through a dark tunnel when you can't yet see the light.
Learned about this through a comment that said that the intro of Deltarune’s “Until Next Time” reminded them of this song. I’m really happy I saw that comment because it led me to this. ☺️
This song starts off with different notes being played all over the place just like how you start off life trying different things here and there. You can hear the melody sometimes in the first half but it's brief and never lasting. In life, you'll do something and think you've found your path, but it doesn't last and you're stuck trying something else again. But eventually, you'll find what you've been searching for and that's when the melody finally settles in and the song is fully realized. The visualizer shows this well going from static to moving, dynamic images. I hope everyone in the 1st half of the song in their life gets to the 2nd half soon!
You don't know how much you helped me with this. I thought I was alone in feeling this way for the longest time, but things like this makes me hope there is a way out. Just, thank you. Thank you so much
@@pedroaugusto6165 I'm glad you and others can relate as well. And I'm glad Porter's music has this message and was able to connect all of us trying to find our way. We'll all make it there eventually!
This visualizer is so cool. I will be honest, Dullscythe isn't my favorite, just because in my mind I expect the melody to eventually come through in some sweeping way instead of staying fragmented. But it grows on me every time I listen to it, and who knows, in a while it might be one of my top songs from the album. That's what's so cool about music, especially Porter's. You can listen to it again and again and new things start to come through that you couldn't hear before.
I hated this song at first but after like the 3rd listen, it all clicked and made 100% sense! Top 3 favorite songs from porter in general, stupid unique!
2:08 I burst into tears at this part, I've always loved it so, s o much. I love how chaotic the beginning of this song is, the way more and more instruments and harmony keep being added every passing second until the song reaches its finest at this exact minute, finally becoming an actual melody. I was unsure when it first released, since I used to think this song was way too abstract, just like Wind Tempos. But that opinion I had about both of them has completely faded since the second replay. The more I listen to Dullscythe, the more attached I feel to it and understand its meaning. This idea of progression, of not only showing you how such a rough track can be perfected little by little but also of even making you appreciate said mess after listening to it several times is so inspiring and can be applied to many aspects of life. I got so excited when Porter announced this visualizer video some days ago on Twitter, I would never have expected he'd actually make one for this! I saved it as soon as it came out and I've finally had enough time to watch it today. All kinds of ideas have browsed my mind everytime I've listened to this song before, little animatics like the ones I keep daydreaming with every other Porter track or any of my favourite songs in general. And it's impressive how close this video actually is to what I've always had in mind until now (and I'm pretty sure that's exactly what's helped the tears come out this time haha). No matter how many times I listen to Dullscythe, Get Your Wish, Something Comforting, Mirror, Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do, Look at the Sky, Trying to Feel Alive and the rest of Nurture's songs, watch their respective videos and hear Porter's explanations of each one, they'll never cease to amaze me. I'm so happy to have discovered Porter and his music, to being able to connect this much to it, to have had the chance to visit Secret Sky online that one day among many others, to have had the chance to listen to Porter talk about the origin of my favourite Nurture songs in his streamings and his Secret Sky tweets... I'm just so, so happy and thankful. Porter has changed my life completely, his music has helped me a lot during my darkest times, and whenever I listen to it I always remember how much I actually want "to feel alive". In the same way that Dullscythe develops its own melody second by second until becoming something listenable, Nurture, other artists' music and many other things have been helping me feel healthier and more complete throughout the years. Now I realize how, at the end of the day, life is just a song in constant development, and our goal is to turn this initial, loud noise into a pleasant, happy melody. If you've reached this point, thank you so much for reading!! I've never written such a long and honest comment here, and I wasn't even planning to, but I couldn't help myself in the end haha. But I'm glad I've let all of these emotions out. Whoever you are, wherever you are and whatever your current situation is, I hope you have a wonderful day/night, and remember how valid you are! The fact that you're listening to a song like this and that you've had enough interest to read my comment already shows how amazing and sensitive you are. I hope you get all of your wishes!💙💚☁️⭐
The lack of a consistent tempo adds to the emotion of it - if you watch him listening to it in the VR stream you can see his arms hitting the exact rhythms as he flails them around. This song is pure catharsis; an unwinding tangled scribble.
I got a lot more enjoyment out of it when I thought of the song as Porter's method of making music it starts off as just random beats and sounds to see what works and slowly comes together to make something consistent
One of the most under-rated songs on the album. It makes me feel like porter and flume had a child and they made this. It has the sort of random and off rhythm of flume, but all the emotion, passion, and love of porter's music. I love it so much

One night on a ride home from work, the cd in the player started skipping. Instead of stopping it, I decided to just listen to it. The skips started to sound beautiful to me as they continued. I jokingly imagined an underground scene of “scratchcore” listeners trading their favorite damaged CDs for the perfect skips. When I heard this track, I was transported back to that night. Porter, you’ve made a masterpiece. I can’t get over the erratic first half giving way to a lush ending. Beautiful chaos resolving into ordered glory. Thank you.
This track reminds me of Fellow Feeling in his worlds album. In the beginning it feels abstract, incomplete, dull and unthinkable. But as the song progress it captures more and more elements and puzzles the missing melodies together, turning it into absolute masterpiece. Thank you porter
I love this song, It's like it's... figuring itself out. going through the worst, chaotic versions of itself it gets through the most violent versions and at 1:50 it gets over the hump per say, finding it's own rhythm around 2:34, Celebrating the trip through chaos around 3:05. I never knew I could feel reassured through just, noise. glitchy, (seemingly) random, beautiful noise. thank you
what made this more special to me is when the first half of the song (because of youtube auto quality and my bad internet) I had it on 144p but when the second half of the song came in, youtube puts it to 480p and i instantly got hit with goosebumps XD. Great video and song!
This song is probably the song that has grown on me the most from the album. For like the first year or so after this album released, I either would skip this song or kind of begrudgingly listen to it while listening through the album. I always felt I understood the intention with the song, but didn't love the execution. Eventually, I got to the point where I'd skip to the last minute and a half or so cause I thought that part sounded pretty, and then within the past 8 months or so, I started always listening to this song in full when I listened to the album, and it finally hit me how good this song actually is. The transition from choppy, erratic, unorganized piano keys to a really beautiful and calming melody at the end was really well done. Most underrated song on the album I'd say.
I was going to argue this, then saw your second half, I understood his intention as well, but I liked the full song from the jump. I've always likened it to a writers block, then finally comes clarity. If you wanted to be more real world about it, it's like walking through a swath of plants of trees, and finally coming across that wide opening.
The name sounds kinda cool to represent near death. Deaths that almost were, but failed. Thus, it was a "dull" scythe Sounds like a badass way to express making it out alive of something
this song gives me a feeling i cant exactly explain. its like i see my entire life on fast forward- who i was, who i thought i was, who i am who i wanted to be, who i thought i wanted to be, and what i know i want to be going forward. its surreal.
This is one of the few nurture songs I didn't completely have a visual storyline in my head for when I listened to it, now that I see it, it's everything that I subconsciously would have wanted.
The harmonics created from the abstract designs makes it a unique experience, I'm lucky I got here early 💙 Porter has always been this good yet still underrated.
I grew attached to this song pretty quickly. The first half reminds me of what I feel like most of the day living with anxiety, fast and scattered thoughts, and the ending portions remind me of what it’s like to finally feel relief and a bit of calmness in the world that is my head.
I always find abandoned buildings to be oddly peaceful during the day. They give me a sense of comfort because i realise that those buildings have been through alot of history. From getting constructed for a purpose, to having inhabitants, and then being abandoned for one reason or another, but even if they remain without a purpose, the fact that they exist and can exist for many years makes them special to me, as they remind me of a younger time.
Ever since I've discovered EDM channels that take advance of syncing the music with the video (ie Monstercat, Proximity, UKF), I've fallen in love with stuff like this. Great work Porter!
Can't explain how specifically, but from 2:08 it always seems like my whole life so far is playing out in front of me. Feels that way every freaking time. Makes me so emotional
this is so beautiful! it's exactly what I imagined when I listened to the song, especially the part around 2:00 which is one of the best moments in music.
i think visualizers are always so cool 😎 when we all listen to a song on our own, we imagine different settings/scenarios. visualizers bring us together and allow us to see the same thing when listening to a song !! 💌
A series of random sounds, but they're really not random at all because when these sounds come together in the way that they do then you can feel what every sound intended to express emotionally.
For me this is the best song in terms of sound, and it even feels like when you try to remember an good past event in your life, at first is all a big mess trying to have an order and once it has an order it becomes beautiful
Dude this album easily takes the spot for album of the year Definitely near the top of my best albums of all time Jesus Christ this album is so goooodddd
I love it, it's not about the song but about discovering what it is like to be it. It doesn't have to get together or be perfect but it just has to be. I really love it, maybe one day I'll also represents something like that. An expression.
this song is like trying and trying, and occasionally you think you have something, but then you hit a dead end or an obstacle and fall again, but eventually you discover that all the things you had, even the obstacles, were what you needed, and then everything comes together, becoming something beautiful and new.
I never knew how much I needed this until I heard it The struggling in the inconsistency at first and then slowly making its way to something bigger than itself was like watching something we love grow through all struggles and come out as this beautiful thing I love Porter cause he reinvents himself and his Music which is evident in each album being completely different in nature DullScythe is my new jam and favourite from Nature Album, #2 being Mirror Waiting for PR albums are always exciting and a new experience Hope this young man gets all the happiness he deserves
This song is like the opposite of a catharsis. It starts rough and kind of aggressive but with glimpses of beauty and calm sprinkled throughout, as if it wants to get to a more cohesive place but just can't. Then it hits even harder when it just becomes this beautiful electronic dance song that somehow still feels cohesive with the rest. This is literally everything I needed right now, this is basically the only thing that calms me down and I couldn't ask for more.
This is how I visualise this song: Snippets shown of Porter of growing as a musician from when he was a child sitting at the piano in a sunshine filled room, as he starts to grow and experiments with his music, him becoming a professional musician etc. basically up until this point and shown how much he has grown as a person but his "song" is still unfinished - the stop starting from his struggles but never fully giving up on his music. The potential we hear in this really clever little piece of music is reflected in the vast potential Porter has rediscovered with his skill as a musician! He will grow more in the future with his music and I can't wait to hear it ^^!
I've been going back to this album recently. Times have been tough and it helps remind me to not be so jaded. Keep making things if they make you happy everyone. Thank you Porter.
I saw a comment a while back that said that 'dullscythe' was just thrown as the middle song of the album. To me, however, this is such a unique piece in Porter's discography. I really like it!

what made this more special to me is when the first half of the song (because of youtube auto quality and my bad internet) I had it on 144p but when the second half of the song came in, youtube puts it to 480p and i instantly got hit with goosebumps XD.

One of the most unhinged parts of the album, an experimental masterpiece
The name sounds kinda cool to represent near death. Deaths that almost were, but failed. Thus, it was a "dull" scythe
Sounds like a badass way to express making it out alive of something
Like surviving cancer

F to the GPU of whoever rendered this though, must’ve really suffered.
@@jay-virm i can do this but my PC is gonna on fire
this song gives me a feeling i cant exactly explain. its like i see my entire life on fast forward-
who i was, who i thought i was, who i am
who i wanted to be, who i thought i wanted to be, and what i know i want to be going forward. its surreal.
Right I thought I was the only one.to feel that...as I'm barely hearing this from Him and it's such a vibe
this is so beautiful i'd love some of these scenes as a wallpaper
I'm sure some of these will be on wallpaper engine soon
Cute furry pic
For now you may as well sc them at the highest quality. But I agree
DULLSCYTHE MUSIC VIDEO AAAAAA
Progress is all that matters, not perfection.
Thank you, Mr. Robinson.
Screenshotting this for later. Thanks for the inspiration :)
The best is not perfect
The rest is not worth it
I like how this song sounds like it was suppose to be a D&b song.
This is one of the few nurture songs I didn't completely have a visual storyline in my head for when I listened to it, now that I see it, it's everything that I subconsciously would have wanted.
Let the song played at 23:57:51 of 12/31/64 and the song would become melodic at 00:00:00 of the new year! BLESS!
64 😳 haha:)
The harmonics created from the abstract designs makes it a unique experience, I'm lucky I got here early 💙 Porter has always been this good yet still underrated.

this is what happens when you put imaginary numbers on your timescale
I grew attached to this song pretty quickly. The first half reminds me of what I feel like most of the day living with anxiety, fast and scattered thoughts, and the ending portions remind me of what it’s like to finally feel relief and a bit of calmness in the world that is my head.
いつも自分の頭の中でイメージした物を届けてくれる
本当にすごい
世界観がマッチしてて鳥肌が立つ
this sounds like trying to revive all the happy memories in your life, you see parts of them, but they're shattered all over.
BEST SONG ON NURTURE DON’T @ ME

I always find abandoned buildings to be oddly peaceful during the day. They give me a sense of comfort because i realise that those buildings have been through alot of history. From getting constructed for a purpose, to having inhabitants, and then being abandoned for one reason or another, but even if they remain without a purpose, the fact that they exist and can exist for many years makes them special to me, as they remind me of a younger time.
I was dying to see visuals for this song, it’s so unique!
AZALAE FANS UNITE!!

We are here!
Now that i read your comment it feels the same way
this is so beautiful! it's exactly what I imagined when I listened to the song, especially the part around 2:00 which is one of the best moments in music.
Why does the animation make me so emotional
Now my eyes can experience the chaotic art of dullscythe (☆▽☆)
I love everything about this.
YES! This track deserves a music video.
I don't care if it's noisy and all over the place: this is one of my faves on the album hands down.
i think visualizers are always so cool 😎 when we all listen to a song on our own, we imagine different settings/scenarios. visualizers bring us together and allow us to see the same thing when listening to a song !! 💌
Really well put

A series of random sounds, but they're really not random at all because when these sounds come together in the way that they do then you can feel what every sound intended to express emotionally.
Probably one of the most underrated songs
Someone ask : how do you dance to this
Me : we glitching bro
It's like I can feel porter's music evolving through this song. Genuinely one of the most beautiful music videos I've seen
Porter Robinson
is now one of my favorite musicians
THIS IS SO SICK!!! This song is criminally underrated it’s got such a cool vibe
I like how this kinda displays. Very pretty
I hope one day I will have the opportunity to collaborate with you or remix one of your songs🥺

For me this is the best song in terms of sound, and it even feels like when you try to remember an good past event in your life, at first is all a big mess trying to have an order and once it has an order it becomes beautiful
OUT OF ALL THINGS I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS AAAAHDKDJDJDJ
Dude this album easily takes the spot for album of the year
Definitely near the top of my best albums of all time Jesus Christ this album is so goooodddd
I’m really shocked an album that came out this year is my all time fave?? It feels like listening to actual magic.
@@dalvionfields3918 it does
This album has and still is helping me through some tough times
I love it, it's not about the song but about discovering what it is like to be it. It doesn't have to get together or be perfect but it just has to be.
I really love it, maybe one day I'll also represents something like that.
An expression.
this song is like trying and trying, and occasionally you think you have something, but then you hit a dead end or an obstacle and fall again, but eventually you discover that all the things you had, even the obstacles, were what you needed, and then everything comes together, becoming something beautiful and new.
This is more then art or music
This is life.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY PORTER!!!
Thank you for the music...
yesterday was my birthday too!
I never knew how much I needed this until I heard it
The struggling in the inconsistency at first and then slowly making its way to something bigger than itself was like watching something we love grow through all struggles and come out as this beautiful thing
I love Porter cause he reinvents himself and his Music which is evident in each album being completely different in nature
DullScythe is my new jam and favourite from Nature Album, #2 being Mirror
Waiting for PR albums are always exciting and a new experience
Hope this young man gets all the happiness he deserves
Happy Birthday Porter Robinson
THIS IS SO HEALING
Cannot wait for concerts in Eugene, OR and Spokane, WA
This song is like the opposite of a catharsis. It starts rough and kind of aggressive but with glimpses of beauty and calm sprinkled throughout, as if it wants to get to a more cohesive place but just can't. Then it hits even harder when it just becomes this beautiful electronic dance song that somehow still feels cohesive with the rest. This is literally everything I needed right now, this is basically the only thing that calms me down and I couldn't ask for more.
Amazing. Just Amazing.
If you can't handle me at my 0:00-2:00 you don't deserve my 2:00-4:00
this song is playing in my ears!! They joyfully move in each ear! Somehow this makes me happy
Every time I come back to this video, it feels so much more magical.
And then it repeats, its a never ending cycle. To create something beautiful is to sacrifice a piece of yourself to the ever-changing world.
