Why do people keep saying this? Is sounds specifically like Two Door Cinema Club, nothing else 😜 not a bad thing just saying it’s not generically “pop-rock”, it’s specifically influenced by one band
He doea the classic G-A-G slide in many places (ref. 2:48 *hea-a-arts* ). You can hear this signature in his other songs like shelter( *a-a-lone,* you'll be *wa-a-tching* over us), lifelike (F C D *F-G-F* ), get your wish ( did you get *yo-u-r* wiish), Sad machine ( *she-e-de* pends on you) Fun fact, he has talked about this in one of his piano streams during nurture release. It is like a filter through which he creates music.
This is exactly how music videos should've stayed since 2010. I love the old pixelated images, the hints to the old music videos era and... HOW YOU'RE NOW SINGING WITH YOUR UNSMAKED VOICE 😭😭
Lyric breakdown from genius (RachaelPalmer): "After the final bridge, the chorus takes on a different meaning. While the first few iterations of the chorus were implied to be spoken by the cheerleader/fans, this final chorus is being spoken from the perspective of the artist/Porter. Flipping the meaning of the song on its head, the final chorus is about the artist’s love for their fans - how much they mean to the artist, and how they have dedicated their life to their fans." So good
I love the direction he is taking now. Guy is a genius. His sound is still there, not too deep into pop, and not too deep into EDM either. It's just enough outside of the comfort zone. I am a bigger fan now!!
Musically, this has written MGMT, Passion Pit, Crystal Castles, Crystal Fighters , Fenech-Soler, Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, The Naked and the Famous, and all those other late 2000s-early 2010s indietronica bands all over it. and a sprinkle of Perfume / Yasutaka Nakata. and maybe underscores and anamanaguchi. and for all that... i am all here for! can't wait for the album.
My girlfriend is an English major and loves deciphering the meaning behind videos/songs like these: she says the deduction is that the artist gains from the fan just as much as the fan gains from the artist. He utilizes masks and other forms of performance & disassociation to exemplify that the relationship between the two is one where both parties gain something, but they aren't able to work together cohesively because there is ultimately a disconnect between both worlds. Even though the "cheerleader" is inserted into his world, it is all artificially done and neither the real artist nor the fan are ever able to coexist together. She eats the candy that looks like Porter at the beginning, then he eats her, then at the end she eats the candy resembling him again. It's a cycle of consuming each others' content. She consumes his art, and he consumes her validation and/or praise. Porter went pretty deep with this one.
would you say this is a song about parasocial relationships or do you think this goes beyond that? 100% the influence can be focused on that parasocial relationship with the fan just like fans can be with the influencer
This type of reciprocal relationship is key to the best artists' live performances. It elevates the experience for both the audience and the artist and creates the atmosphere most people desire from live performances.
This is pure serotonin for all the best reasons. It's poppy, it's catchy, and you just know this is going to absolutely SLAY live. Definitely going to be a summer repeat song.
@@yeidisworld I guess yeah the more I listen the more I hear it. It’s quite the mish mash of genre stuff tbh. Never heard a synth rip through a pop punk style tune like this
i think this song is about the obsessive nature of internet fandoms, and the "cheerleader" character is the embodiment of all of the "love" he gets from the internet. He felt like the online world needed him, and he used to find it strange and somewhat objectifying. But during the hiatus between Worlds and Nurture, he felt their absence, and he realised he actually depends on the internet for validation and love more than they depend on him. Also, Porter's entire career lies in the hands of his fanbase and how they recieve him. "I thought she needed me, but I need her." That's my interpretation. Such a banger.
idk if it's cliche. it's definitely got some clear pop sensibilities but it's extremely hard to make something so compelling without any pretense and with so much honesty@@carlvargas7911
I think its a juxtaposition, both about the toxic overbearing sides of it, but also how he needs their support. He is definitely not promoting the obsession but realises he is nothing without his fanbase and their healthy form of support.
Friday, October 17th, 2014 at the House of Blues in Orlando: I randomly picked up a flyer on the UCF parking garage floor that said “Porter Robinson: WORLDS”. To even begin to try to explain how my life has changed since that night… it’s not possible. Here YOU are, Porter Robinson. Holy crap. Worlds changed my life and allowed me to have a brighter look on life right after leaving all of my friends in California to start college. I carpooled random strangers to your show in orlando in 2014, and have seen you 32/33 times now. This song is by far your best and proudest work. Your fan base loves the shxt out of you, as you express in this song. Thank you for giving us everything you have while maintaining your light. You are a pure, genuine artist. I am so thankful to have found that flyer on the floor that one lonely evening. Thank you Porter.
seeing Worlds live was truly like being in another world. you can’t even explain it. idk about you, but I was lucky enough to see it outdoors. so happy to see that his music changed your life for the better!! 💙
I was at that show at the House of Blues. It was my first electronic music show and one of my first live music shows ever. I had no idea what I was walking into other than I was obsessed with Worlds and I knew the show was entirely his music. That night completely changed my opinion of live electronic music and what it could be.
I think this song is about parasocial relationships. Cheerleader being used as another word for fangirl/fanboy/stan/etc. the first verse having lines such as “she’s addicted. obsessed like “i know i can fix him”” and “she draws me kissing other guys” are the type of things an obsessive fan would do
Also makes sense given most of the video. Having a bunch of posters of Porter on the wall, there being multiple cheerleaders who chase him around, him crowdsurfing at one point like you would at a show.
I was having a REALLY BAD DAY. Then i opened TH-cam and saw this. I put my headphones on, then when ''its not fair'' rocked up, i really started crying. Thank you, Porter.
Porter Robinson is the type of artist where I keep coming back to his songs everytime and the melody suddenly gives me goosebumps. Greetings from Germany
This is the most insane, fever dream of a music video that makes me do double takes each and every time. This is the most insane crap that I've never seen before, and y'know what? I dig it.
Just like how the artist didn't realise how much they needed their fans until it was over, I didn't realise I needed early 2000s pop rock until that era left us behind. This hits the spot.
The day this song came out I legit said "Idk what can ruin my day rn but it has to be some really deep emotional shit because l'm so fucking happy rn." Legit less than an hour later my bf broke up with me. Thanks Porter Robinson!
I can’t believe I’m here witnessing a historical moment. Porter’s work really touched my heart in a very surreal way. I’m so grateful that I could have the chance to see you in person in 2023. Thank you for keep making wonderful art and make this chaotic world a better place. 😢
It's kinda sad how... Is not your fault you're living in a madhouse... I can't back down Aren't you tired of blending into the background (9 hours before release 👀)
Watching this like a proud parent. Porter is finally making the music he's always wanted to make. No EDM fads, No needing to prove himself. Just Porter being Porter and I love him for it.
Honestly, at first I was skeptical. Then after listening, I noticed how much of a banger this song is. Another win for Porter. Now it's on repeat all day long
As a mcr fan, I hope porter never feels pressured by his audience to make something he doesn’t have the passion to produce. I’m sure that’s easier for me to say than it is for him to do but his creative genius is something I truly admire. We all go through different stages of life and expecting someone to make the same type of music forever is ironically “not fair”.
Hey I havent checked in with Porter Robinson in a while and read in this comment section a lot about MCR. Can you fill me in what thats about? Will he collab with them or? Im so lost😊
@@thisguy5493 Hey! Unfortunately, I personally don’t know anything about a collab. :( I have seen a few of the mcr comments but I think people just see similarities with the way Gerard Way used to dress and porter’s “emo” style in this video (I could be wrong though). I only mentioned mcr because it also reminded me of them and part of the reason why they disbanded. I couldn’t even describe how happy I’d be if they were to collab though! 😂
I think about this song and this album all the time; it's a huge musical inspiration to me and so so impressive. It's hard to explain what's so alluring about it, but the skill involved musically (and in all the music videos) is unbelievable and the themes of the album are so compelling to me... idk it's so cool to me and I'm glad it exists
It's drop dead incredible that you can both critique fangirling and ultimately end that critique on a supportive note. Like yeah, parasocial stuff is something to be aware of these days. But people are so quick to judge teenage girls for their strong feelings. Even if they have some growing up to do expressing those feelings, their humanity and sincerity still mean something. They're still whole human beings who have passion for what they care about. And they *do* grow up someday, carrying that passion with them. Porter gets it.
@@phoenics0912Yes, parasocial relationships can get very harmful, but I think Porter says it very well within the context of the song. "It's kind of sad how it's not your fault you're living in a madhouse." -> Social media has normalized the way we form these relationships, and even encourage its commodification. Therefore, the young and impressionable often end up being most vulnerable. Think about how it's most often teenage girls who are shamed and criticized for liking idol/boyband groups, streamers, musical artists, etc. when just about anyone can fall victim to a harmful parasocial relationship. I think what @CrystalxKyuubi is trying to say is that Porter recognizes that this is a problem, but doesn't one-sidedly mock his fans for expecting more out of him than they should, especially his younger fans who are the most susceptible. Instead he recognizes that they are also human, and that their support means a lot to him.
@@vifurawa2715 It goes even farther. "Her love, the type / For you to dedicate your life." Not only does he not shame, to some extent, he admits his music is still for his fans in the end, and that's a little bit parasocial too. Heck, I think the chorus is a little bit about him too. "I gave my life to you / Now I feel you even when you're not there" So instead of shaming, he says he's happy his songs could be there for them, he wishes he could do more, but in absence of that, he wishes them a better life so they don't need to cling to him anymore. What an emotionally intelligent and beautiful person.
It's really hard for artists like Porter, who are constantly put on a high standard by their almost overly feverish fanbase. Many struggle to deliver the expectations, but Porter managed to surprise me every. single. time. ❤Porter Robinson
my first ever concert was the shelter tour in 2016 when i was 12 years old… i bawled my eyes out, and to this day it’s the best concert i’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing. now i’m 20 and things are really different, but it’s still been an honor to watch porter’s work grow and him grow creatively as well. what an immensely talented and skilled individual. 🩷 listening to cheerleader in my own car on the way to college is crazy. i still remember listening to language on repeat in my dad’s car (through awful earbuds that made everything sound like tinfoil, mind you) in 2015, staring out of the window because that song made the world look so beautiful. his music still does that for me; it makes the world look brighter and shinier, like it’s all brand new!
I love the part when Porter Robinson said "It's Porter Robinson time" and then he Porter Robinsoned all over the place Truly the Porter Robinson to ever Porter Robinson
This sounds like stuff I listened to when I was a senior in high school. It really takes me back. There’s something so comforting in that. Amazing song
I think that this song is themed around not all parasocial relationships but instead the mutual connection between a fans and the artist. The artist needs the viewer while the viewer needs the artist to make art. Though a boundary between the two is needed or both fall apart
@@e3.14c4first half is about parasocial relationships while the other half is about the relationship of the artist and how artists dedicate themselves to make art for their fans
That’s a big part of parasocial relationships, though, isn’t it? In my eyes, it feels more like the parasocial relationship between a fan and an artist. And also the reverse of that: the parasocial relationship between the artist and their group of fans. I’ve heard the brothers John and Hank Green sometimes talk about a ‘reverse-parasocial’ relationship (they even coined the term ‘sarapocial relationship’ for it). They explain how, in the same way we get attached to creators, creators kind of get attached to their fans. To me, this feels more similar to what the song was saying. It could be that we do just mean the same thing but I didn’t really understand you correctly; if so, sorry.

how does every Porter Robinson project sound so different from one another and it still has that Porter Robinson vibe
Bro just goes through a whole artistic evolution every other song ever since Fellow Feeling released
The Porter spice is real
He really takes his time between projects 😊
And how does every single one sound so good
He doea the classic G-A-G slide in many places (ref. 2:48 *hea-a-arts* ). You can hear this signature in his other songs like
shelter( *a-a-lone,* you'll be *wa-a-tching* over us),
lifelike (F C D *F-G-F* ),
get your wish ( did you get *yo-u-r* wiish),
Sad machine ( *she-e-de* pends on you)
Fun fact, he has talked about this in one of his piano streams during nurture release. It is like a filter through which he creates music.
This chorus is giving 25 year-old me the same feelings as finding new songs on TH-cam and making them my personality at age 9 so thank you 💖

I love the old pixelated images, the hints to the old music videos era and... HOW YOU'RE NOW SINGING WITH YOUR UNSMAKED VOICE 😭😭
Here before this got put on the FC25 soundtrack. Not tryna gatekeep I really hope this album gets more exposure through it because it's amazing
Lyric breakdown from genius (RachaelPalmer): "After the final bridge, the chorus takes on a different meaning. While the first few iterations of the chorus were implied to be spoken by the cheerleader/fans, this final chorus is being spoken from the perspective of the artist/Porter. Flipping the meaning of the song on its head, the final chorus is about the artist’s love for their fans - how much they mean to the artist, and how they have dedicated their life to their fans."
So good
Its like a lyrical ambigram, so nuts!

Well put, ty for sharing :)
would you say this is a song about parasocial relationships or do you think this goes beyond that? 100% the influence can be focused on that parasocial relationship with the fan just like fans can be with the influencer
This type of reciprocal relationship is key to the best artists' live performances. It elevates the experience for both the audience and the artist and creates the atmosphere most people desire from live performances.
thinking about the fan doll version that got stepped on
@@zachi2fox246 Probably has themes like that too, first thing that came to my mind as well

Today my world is forever changed because I learned that Porter Robinson is both a punk rocker and a weeb.

This is the kinda thing most emo bands wish they had made
I agree about the emo elements but this is also very fitting for a pop punk sound :)

i think this song is about the obsessive nature of internet fandoms, and the "cheerleader" character is the embodiment of all of the "love" he gets from the internet.
"I thought she needed me, but I need her."
That's my interpretation. Such a banger.
That's what i think. Porter wouldnt write such a cliche song without deeper meaning
idk if it's cliche. it's definitely got some clear pop sensibilities but it's extremely hard to make something so compelling without any pretense and with so much honesty@@carlvargas7911
@@k_nito7954 that's an entirely different era and genre of music....
I guess what i saw in the trailer is porter got sick and tired of these porter robinson ripoff songs and leaks particually against worlds song idk

I think this song is about parasocial relationships. Cheerleader being used as another word for fangirl/fanboy/stan/etc. the first verse having lines such as “she’s addicted. obsessed like “i know i can fix him”” and “she draws me kissing other guys” are the type of things an obsessive fan would do
"she draws me kissing other guys" is such a raw line, i feel like a lot of girls just got called out for that one
Also makes sense given most of the video. Having a bunch of posters of Porter on the wall, there being multiple cheerleaders who chase him around, him crowdsurfing at one point like you would at a show.

I also worry that there is a message here. I hope he's okay.

@@thisguy5493 Hey! Unfortunately, I personally don’t know anything about a collab. :( I have seen a few of the mcr comments but I think people just see similarities with the way Gerard Way used to dress and porter’s “emo” style in this video (I could be wrong though).
What exactly is your argument? Parasocial stuff is never ok 👎
"I gave my life to you / Now I feel you even when you're not there"
So instead of shaming, he says he's happy his songs could be there for them, he wishes he could do more, but in absence of that, he wishes them a better life so they don't need to cling to him anymore. What an emotionally intelligent and beautiful person.
Nurture solidified Porter as my favorite artist. Genuinely one of my greatest inspirations, he just doesn't miss 🥲

Okay so like this popping up on my feed randomly filled me with literal butterflies! I'm so excited!
I think that this song is themed around not all parasocial relationships but instead the mutual connection between a fans and the artist.
The artist needs the viewer while the viewer needs the artist to make art.
Though a boundary between the two is needed or both fall apart
I wasn't able to find words to articulate a fraction of that, thanks.
