Lyrics:
if i send this void away,
have i lost a part of me?
when you wake you’re bargaining
for the promise to come back
cause getting made you want more
and hoping made you hurt more
oh there must be
something wrong with me
and getting made you want more
and hoping made you hurt more
someone tell me
something comforting
take what you want, but you’re tied by the tooth
wasn’t it meant to relieve you?
so suffer the signs that you needed to change
heed all the ways you’d been thinking
cause getting made you want more
and hoping made you hurt more

From Porter’s interview with popjustice
“It’s about someone who’s stuck and trying to leave - but it’s scary trying to leave. It’s a representation of being stuck in this little studio: being creatively stuck, and the darkness outside the garden is representing the uncertainty of life outside your routines. It’s about taking a leap of faith towards a healthier and more balanced situation.”
TMW you realize this is your current relationship,, you're stuck here in the comfort zone,, but it's not the right one,, you need to leave, but it's easier not to : \
There are greener pastures, but you're kinda in what feels like one, even though it's not.
Thats cool
"Stuck in this little studio" is much deeper than it seems literally. Im very artistic and creative, but years ago, i stopped trying to work on and create new projects all the time because i was sort of becoming an artistic hermit. Even in some philosphical/psychological theories, being stuck in even something positive can have negative effects because youre stuck there. "Artists are slaves to their ideas". Itll work for a bit, but its gona get to a point where you have to change, whether its in your control or not.
@@CTSSTC that´s exactly how i feel right now, its kinda funny haha
@@CTSSTC that's kinda what im in too, i think?
To me, this video so accurately depicts what it feels like to stay so long in your comfort zone that it starts to lose its appeal, until you discover how scary yet liberating it feels to step outside.
Good point!
Where I'm at right now, well said.
You feel like you just looping in a cycle, everything feel the same, you feel not fulfilment, and changes making you anxious, and you don't know what to do.
Damn...

Something Comforting it's the biggest "you'll be okay" message life has ever send to me. I'm keeping these lyrics in my heart, and also the feeling of it breaking into pieces ever single time I hear "Oh, there must be... Something wrong with me", that line, I can't help but break dome into tears, at first it was like sadness, recognition of my emptyness, but then it became subtle, less negative, like if I were saying that to myself, comforting myself exactly.
I admire Porter for his ability to create such personal and powerful songs. Each one of them, since the beginning, they all feel like he's hugging us. Like he's there for us.
Love you Porter, so excited for the waiting.

I agree with almost all of that except in the beginning he was producing really generic house music which doesn't feel quite as personal (just my opinion!) and it wasn't until Worlds that he really found his sound and that's the first music of his that feels more personal to me
Thank u for your suggestions, I will listen to them because I'm really interested in music sending that kind of message, that was my opinion only, but hey thank u for the likes, may Porter see this comment someday ❤️

overananalyzing this song, the video and chord progression's relationship, 3~5 min read i think
The box is a representation of the "comfort zone", the area that most people are most comfortable with working in. Although in this video it is represented as a small miniature forest... [cont.]
quote from another comment: "Porter talked about how life was growing stale and horrible in the pursuit to make new music. He would cut out most aspects of what a "normal" life would be with the belief to have the firm identity as a "musician." However, this cycle of waking up, going onto the computer to attempt to make music for 10 hours and going back to sleep, made finding inspiration to make music even harder. What he normally considered his creation bubble of his studio quickly became a rotting forest. So, when he decided to chill out and try new things in life, that's when creation once again sparked in him, with this newfound appreciation of the world around him, and the spark from that became Nurture."
TL;DR: this song is about stepping outside of your comfort zone and discovering something new, and reflect porter's own experience of this cycle.
anyways, during the first half of the song, the song uses a main chord progression:(e flat major) IV, III, VI, II, VI. this represents the cycle, the "comfort zone", and even as the music, which initially is upbeat, the song itself goes through 4 of the 5 stages of grief:
1:54 represents denial, with the literal cry for "help" and the moaning vocal samples. Porter looks around in his area, looking for sources of inspiration inside his comfort zone, but fails to do so. This is also the first time he reaches outside his comfort zone.
2:19 represents anger, the kicks and the relatively rough sounding synth express the frustration that comes with not being able to make songs.
2:35 represents depression, which is shown by the lack of other instruments, leaving only a piano and the vocalist. In the video, we see porter lying down, and reevaluating his past decisions, just depression in general
2:47 represents acceptance, where some. of the instruments join back in, and porter in the video makes up his mind to step outside his comfort zone. This is also the segment in which Porter stand up, having made up his mind, and steps outside the box that trapped him in a fixated bubble of thought.
After this segment, we are met with the second chorus, which reuses the elements of the previous chorus, but changes the chord progression to II, III, IV, V. This marks a big change in the song and can be seen as a revelation of some sorts to Porter. He then continues to expand outside his comfort zone, and the song continues to expand in depth as Porter adds more and more "layers" to the song. After he accepts that his comfort zone was not the best place to have been writing songs in, Porter embraces change and is rewarded with newfound inspiration.

This video is a perfect representation of Porter's journey; Every day in this miniature forest of his, he woke up, did his daily routine, and even as the forest was burning day after day, he still insisted on the same daily activities. However, when he finally took the step outside the forest, a whole world opened up in his mind, which helped open his eyes about his daily routines. When he finally escaped the forest, he became immersed in a whole universe of inspiration and beauty, leading him to instead wake up in a huge world of endless possibility.
Porter talked about how life was growing stale and horrible in the pursuit to make new music. He would cut out most aspects of what a "normal" life would be with the belief to have the firm identity as a "musician." However, this cycle of waking up, going onto the computer to attempt to make music for 10 hours and going back to sleep, made finding inspiration to make music even harder. So, when he decided to chill out and try new things in life, that's when creation once again sparked in him, with this newfound appreciation of the world around him, and the spark from that became Nurture.

To me, this song has always been about depression. The void that opens up in your heart... after a while, it becomes a part of you. Trying to get better, to find hope in your future can feel like trying to abandon that part of yourself, like you're losing part of yourself.
But years later, I can say that's not the case. That void is still sort of there... I don't think it will ever leave, but it isn't hostile anymore. It's there whenever I see someone struggling to get up in the morning, and it helps me be kind. It helps me understand I'm not alone, they're not alone and we all need help sometimes.
It helps me reach out a hand and say the world really isn't as bad as you think.
It helps me smile, and say something comforting :)

100% what I interpreted it as as well. He couldn't get a bite on his fishing rod (no new ideas) and he also lost his watering can so he can't *nurture* the life around him that he already got. It isn't until something goes out of the square that he experiences something new (the floating scenes), and before stepping out he looks up at the tree one last time (Worlds).

This video actually represents someone being in their own view of their comfort zone when they are stressed or depressed. The longer you stay in the comfort zone, the more it will start to lose its appeal. That is why the forest started to die away. As soon as your comfort zone dies away then you will have to face your stress and fear alone without anything to support. That is what 3:02 was trying to show you when you have to face stress without using your comfort zone. This is my opinion about the video.

Man I relate to that line, sometimes I don't want to hope for anything good to happen because I've experienced several rejections and struggles in a row. But I'm reminded that God has a great plan for all of us, better than anything we could hope for, and I begin to see how all those rejections led to the creation of something great in my life. Amen.

You know Porter, I doubt you'll ever see this, but I feel like I just needed to say this to someone, whoever's listening out there. The first time I ever heard this song was probably one of the most emotionally distressing days of my life. I'd spent the entire day arguing with my parents after getting dragged into some argument they were having that morning. Hours later they were telling me that they couldn't stay in the same house anymore and that me and my siblings (one of which is only 11 years old. I'd tried comforting her but she was just destroyed) had to choose who they were going to live with. I begged them not to force us to choose something like this. I just wanted them to stay together. After a while I just couldn't handle being around them anymore, so I left to my room and cried into a stuffed platypus plush while they continued arguing in the living room. After writing out my last words to my sisters so that I would know what to say to them if we weren't living together anymore, I got a notification for this video, and I've got to say, the timing couldn't have been any more perfect. I listened to this a couple of times to try to calm myself down a little, and even though I continued to cry for a long time, and I had to take multiple days off of school because I just couldn't handle being around my classmates in that state, your music was just, for lack of a better term, comforting. Luckily, my parents decided not to split up a few days later, though all of us aren't exactly on great terms right now. I just wanted you to know that. Even if you never read this. Your music has provided me some relief in a very tough time in my life. So, thanks man. You're an amazing artist.
EDIT: I'm doing a lot better now than I was back when I first posted this, and I've left an update further down in the replies (well TH-cam's being weird so I actually had to add it to the end of this comment but nevermind that). I cannot begin to express my gratitude towards the now thousands of people this comment has reached (I really didn't expect that kind of response when I first posted it, maybe two or three replies at most!) I'm so grateful that Porter's community is so supportive and encouraging. Really, your kind words really helped reinforce to me early on that other people do have the capacity to care about my problems. Keep being great everyone, your words mean more than you know! I've decided to leave this comment here as a reminder to myself how far I've come, and as a reminder to others reading it that suffering is natural, but it doesn't devalue or define you like I'd first thought of myself. Your life can get better no matter where you are now. Even if it takes a while, I guarantee you it's worth it.
UPDATE: I've been wondering just how to respond to all this for a while now, but now feels like a better time than never, so here I go. I wanted you all to know that, overall, my life's a lot better now than it used to be. I've reconnected with a lot people I care about and have received the kind support and encouragement I've really needed to begin healing and moving past some of the more unsavory parts of my life so far. Not to say I have no problems at all of course, there's been plenty more I've had to deal with than what you see in that original comment, but at the very least I finally feel like I can handle my own issues for the first time in my life, and for once my future's looking brighter than my past. I've moved out of my parent's house, I'll soon be graduating high school, I'm coming up on finishing a few personal writing projects that I'm very satisfied with, and without going into too much detail, I'm beginning to finally come to terms with some personal identity stuff that I'd been taught to hate and repress all my life. I'm sorry if any of you have been worried about me after all this time, but I hope you can see this now so I can let you know that your reaching out to me here wasn't in vain. Really, this is probably some of the most genuine care and concern I've ever received. I hope you all know that it's people like you who've helped to keep people like me going all this time. Without the encouragement from all of you thousands of people, I might not even be writing this update. I love all of you beautiful people,
Thanks for caring :')

The message I got from this song is that he was in a "comfort zone". The more you stay in your comfort zone, the more it actually withers you away. It is never good to stay just within the confines of whats comfortable to you. You have to take risks, face that anxiety and push through. In this case, jump out of your comfort zone. In the end, it may lead you to something much more vast and beautiful then you could possibly imagine.

I feel like the square represents the false fulfillment he has garnered from his music career. Kinda how he needed the "glory" to remain happy with his life. And that became a source of fulfillment that slowly began to fade as you can see with the vegetation burning to nothing. And to me, the ending represents the true happiness he has found, where the square only exists as a faded memory in his mind.

Your music is really amazing and it touches my heart and I really needed to get that stress out... Thank you for opening up your world to share with us !!!
Stay strong my friend ❤ you are one in a million ❤
Buddy Im 33 too and this world doesn't make sense to me half of the time. I understand exactly what you mean. I too get emotional to these songs like this one showing there is more than what we feel like we've beeen limited to. Alll we want to do is fill our heads of all of our past mistakes and struggles maybe even current struggles and feel like we're chained up in a cave with no other choice than to stare at the caves wall but just know there are others like me who get it and are rooting for you my friend.. take care...
I am the same age with you and I am struggling too. Hope we can survive this year.
which was the first?

So basically, the Shepherdess Live visual was a foreshadow to this Music Video.
Porter really out here playing 4D chess with us
When you realize the girl voice you've been hearing is just his voice high pitch
Soo.. in other words, music editing is better than any voice changer. XD You can make your voice into anything you imagine.
Wait WHAT
@@raibatsu Yep, crazy right?! I'm doing this in one of my songs right now.
What about the other songs he made ?
Wait... SERIOUSLY?!
結婚なんかな。諦めてでもその場所が大切で。でも心地いいのは、というか心地よくないのは大事に大切にしないといけない人との時間。

I'm a mid aged jobless guy who lost his career for over 3 years because of mental illnesses and diagnosing anxiety disorder......first I want to say sorry that a loser like me love this song......and secondly thank you for making this beautiful comforting song.... :)
Yo middle age jobless dude. I been there. See a psych and a therapist. You have more control over your mind than you know. I believe in you!
Hey don’t apologize for loving the song! It’s great that you do 💛
I'm 55 and listening to Porter Robinson..go figure. Life,my friend, is a revolving door of challenges. It's up to you to decided when to break free and realize that you are unique. One of a kind yet connected with everyone and everything around you.We are brainwashed from the moment we enter society to believe we must conform and stay in line. But in reality we are born to stand out and not to fit in.stay strong, believe in the only thing that really matters.. yourself.
@@worldofworship288 i feel this
Loser like you? This song is about people like you, people like Porter Robinson. It's about getting stuck in a flawed comfort zone and every-time you leave try it, it gets destroyed a bit more and you end up right back in it until it all gone. You'll get through this.
Didn't know porter's fans were all authors.
We're all authors, even if we don't know it. Oh and btw I don't need to be an author to say that.
lol this is funny you make my day thank you
His music inspires introspection... Also helps that they're all bops too.
*poets
Authors should be the name for Porter Robinson's fans
Porters could be one as well
I lost my dog a few hours ago as of writing this.
This album was the first place I went to comfort myself.
Thank you Porter, and everyone who worked on these songs, for making my life a bit more bearable :')
Stay strong bro 🙌, he's looking over you from a better place.
Thank you
Did you're dog died of old age or he/she got sick?
@@chgaming5059 He got really sick, but for his breed he also was pretty old at the time so I guess it might be a combination of both

I saw a comment that said “I didn’t know all of Porter Robinson’s fans were all writers” I knew it was sarcastic but I guess its true 👁👄👁

So around a few hundred of intros

More importantly he expresses himself, that's we all want.
That, sir, would be god-tier.

My dearest friend has only one followed artist in yt, and that is you Porter Robinson. I remember what he told me, you don’t make songs for popularity. You made them to express your heart and that is why he became so fond of you. When I was feeling down, he sent me a voice message, he sang this song. And during that time, I didn’t pay attention.
And now, here I am, visiting your channel, and hoping for his comment to find. And I was right, he wrote one. He already passed away last September 20, at the age of 19. And we’re still mourning.
I will support you from now on for him.
💞💞
I'm so sorry for your loss 💖💖

I really hope in the future he is remembered as the freaking legend he is. Absolutely 100% pure, unadulterated raw human emotion is expressed in everyone of his songs. And it's perfect every time ..
Porter: Prepare to cry
Now make it double
I got to know your song on a channel called "有村泰志 / Arimura Taishi".
I can't convey all my thoughts because I can't speak English, but I'm so happy to know it even late.

Great(:
it's never late for timeless music : )
Me too
Blue HamHam's are great!
Finally, finally after a year, I quit my comfort zone job.
Feeling anxious, guilt, confuse, fear.
But I knew this comfort zone will kill me, I need to make the mistake I do now, give myself a lesson, force myself go out to adapt and be better.
Let's hope theres something comforting out there for me.

Quarantine cure for the hamster wheel ..
Wow, in my opinion, the beginning parts, he grows himself and his music and is trying to find himself. And during the part where he’s suspended with the sky, he feels like he’s writing the best music he could, but when it’s the dark stormy weather, it’s the depression setting in and then the screen is a blank canvas for him to restart. And then nurture happens!! Love you Porter, really needed this
So-so(Japanese beatboxer) covered this song, so I came here. I love original too! Sorry for my poor English. I was moved😌

I'm sorry for your loss 😔
XDDD
This song is perfect to listen to in self isolation 💙💙💙
I really feel like I’m maturing along with this new album. The idea of finding comfort in this world really speaks to me. Contrary to the concept of worlds which was about escapism, which I totally felt identified with. Now we’re finding comfort in this world, without having to escape from it. The timing of the album really resonates with my life at the moment.
I believe this song fills the gap that's left when I want someone's advice and encouragment, but I just can't bare the suffering that comes along with those words. It does so, perfectly.

I think the video is a beautiful representation of the feelings conveyed in the track. I loved the scenes where you were suspended in the air, that looked so cool!
Wow ahrix you're here! I like your song Imagine hoping for more like that in future!

the conundrum of wanting to get better, but lacking the tools to perceive/cultivate the life you want.
This is the kind of music you can never put a label on. It's an experience. It reaches the inner depths of my own personhood, and I never had to say a word. Thank you Porter.
I love his natural elements themed videos. Before the ocean in "Get your Wish" (for water), now the forest in "Something Comforting" (for grass)
So next porter will flying in the air
Erin or chilling next to a nice bonfire :)

Fire Nation is next
Ooo so the next one is gonna be either fire or air? 👀 Looking forward to that~
Man this hits different when you're burning out.
I feel like the watering can has a lot of significance that I haven’t seen talked about. To me it acts as the inspiration and passion and drive to create, but then after it falls out of this vignette, the world begins to deteriorate because of the lack of what made things grow to begin with. I feel like the watering can falling is Porter’s feelings during the time he was afraid of never making music again. Reaching and stepping down on the exact spot the can fell is showing how stepping out of this world that you’ve grown but can’t grow anymore is scary but necessary to find that inspiration and hope again
My music teacher: what's your favorite music genre?
Me: Porter Robinson
I guess it's technically electronic dance music and maybe you can become more specific by saying stuff like synth house electro house or one of those keywords. But yeah Porter does have a ver unique style
LMAO
Teacher: "Porter Robinson", i love that music genre!
@@ideasonek3374 I’d say more melodic/emotional uptempo or dubstep. Maybe even synthwave/future bass, but yes it’s clearly electronic dance music
Bruh none of you know your genres (don't woosh me I obviously get the joke) but he makes Synthpop, Synthwave, Progressive House
Not melodic dubstep or future bass, understand your genres
Get Your Wish - Water
Something Comforting - Earth
Should we expect a fire and air one next?
