I'm sure everyone has that one feeling/memory that Porter Robinson's music invokes, even if his music wasn't actually present for that particular event. (BTW the feeling is called anemoia, it's a nostalgic feeling for an event you never experienced.) But for me Porter's music always took me back to the vacations I took with my family as a kid. Not the parts of vacation that were, seas-side fun, partying, and whatnot. But the more quiet, liminal parts of a vacation. Getting up in the morning at 4am, and half dozing in the car on the way to the airport. Getting to the airport and wandering this massive building stuffed with people, and looking out the windows to see it's still dark out. strolling on the beachside boardwalk past sunset, as the lights on all the shops and houses start to come on. resting in the hotel room, and wandering the dozens of identical halls. Going for a late-night swim. All these moments that just felt so secret, so quiet and intimate, and personal. They carried a sort of mystical, dreamlike feeling for me, I felt completely safe in this strange alien world of twilight and dark. Knowing that something or someone was looking over me, even though I was miles away from home. That's how Porter's music makes me feel. And the craziest part is, I ONLY JUST DISCOVERED HIS MUSIC A FEW MONTHS AGO!! but somehow it takes me right back to those moments. It's bizarre, and it's beautiful

As someone with anxiety, this song is exactly what it feels like living with it. It's always fighting with yourself and reminding yourself you're good enough. So to hear that line at the end saying, "It will all be okay in the end," gives me hope that maybe I'm not as bad as my brain tells me I am.
At some point in your life, you encountered a trauma, which gave you that impression of yourself: I'm bad, or no good enough, and I have to be perfect to fix it right. Maybe you got abandoned or something.
This sounds silly I know but deep down we are all beautiful beings with so much to give to one another, and you are NO exception :)

Just saw him play this live and the best part was at the end! After the robotic voice says, "Keep going keep going and it'll all be OK in the end" it follows it up with, "and if it's not OK, then that just means it's not the end"
In some of his shows, the voice says " The best sort of inner voice speaks to us in a gentle, kind and unhurried way. It should feel as if a sympathetic arm were being put around our shoulder by someone who have lived long and seen a great many sad things." Before leading into Sad Machine. But the "If it's not OK, then it isn't the end yet." Line is very comforting and I kind of wish it was in the original release.

That's strange, because Mother, Look at the Sky, Shelter, Sweet Time, Blossom and Trying to Feel Alive just really make me feel bad about myself. I don't know if I'm overthinking it, or if I'm just a genuinely bad person, but Porter's least destructive "songs that wreck Wheeler's mental well-being" (which in this case are Look at the Sky and Trying to Feel Alive) still make me feel like I haven't done anything to deem myself worthy of having existed on this planet, and the most damaging (Mother, Shelter, Blossom and Sweet Time) just make me realize existential issues I have with myself and make me question if I'm even worth feeling the emotions those songs are meant to convey. It's almost like these songs inherently aren't for me, but I can't stop myself from listening to them.
What I can say is that some of his work has a lot of existential pondering baked into the songs. Allot of it feels like the duality between the reality of life and the dreams that they are made of.
I love the merging of different realities in this. I also go on trails a lot to work through my thoughts, and I just really got what this was portraying. Love it so much.

I love the lyrical content of this song, it's not the typical "I'm in a toxic relationship" or "I'm in depression" song that I've heard so much in the industry. I think we all need messages like this, to help us put aside that pessimistic side that we fear that prevents us from doing what makes us happy.

On September 8th, 2020 I could have easily lost my life. I dozed off while driving and ended up hitting a tree head on in the air going about 60mph. I swerved out of oncoming traffic and miraculously no one else was hurt. My car? Totaled. My Physical well being? somehow I only made it out with scrapes and bruises. I've been questioning my mentality. About halfway through that crash I really accepted that I was about to die. Right there. 19 years old. This is exactly what I needed to hear. "Keep going keep going keep going" because I realize I was given another chance. Thank you for your music Porter... it's really helped me. Whatever music you make, I'll be with you every step of the way.

I'm so glad your okay friend. I'm 18 and almost lost my father when I was 4 due to a car crash that would change his life. He was drunk driving on the highway in the rain at 1am and rolled off the ramp and almost rolled into a lake. Like actual yards from the lake but was stopped from the concrete pillar that held the highway ramp. He laid unconscious with many life-threatening injuries for 2 days before help arrived. I don't think about it often, but life without my father would be unimaginable. He lives a happy life now doing what he loves and spreads his joy with anyone he meets. Please don't cut your life short. Live your life to the fullest. Once again I'm so glad you made it out okay

I think Porter grew within an 8 year span for him to pass down what he experienced through sadness/depression over the years. Also, I think the connection between the 2 songs is to have a daily self-reflection in the mirror while saying a positive mantra in order to start the healing process. The mantra is it’s own language that speaks deeply to your conscious. Thank you, Porter♥️

honestly, I'm just gonna say it. I used to pass porter robinson off these past few years, as I was one of the few who actually didn't find much enjoyment out of 'worlds,' and found it to be a bit boring and overrated, as I'd personally been more a fan of his older, electro house work like 'say my name' and 'spitfire.' i have nothing against the album, it does have some great moments and it's far from being a bad album; it just wasn't really my cup of tea. but I heard 'look at the sky' a few months back when it was released as a single and was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed it, how much better and lovely it sounded than anything off of worlds
the past few months have been really rough for me, the ongoing pandemic has ravaged my mental state and left me feeling more and more depressed, hopeless, and even suicidal at many points lately, even to the point of self-harm just as recently as a week ago. i've been going to a therapist for the first time lately to help with my own self-image and esteem issues. Lately i've heard a lot of positive things said about this new nurture record, and obviously i had my doubts based on my personal opinion on 'worlds.' however, after I watched anthony fantano's review of this record and saw one of the harshest critic's surprisingly positive reviews on it, i decided to give it a shot. I'm typing this out as i stream the playlist of this album on youtube, and so far i have been... blown away to say the least. literally everything i've heard up to this point has been stunning, phenomenal pieces of music. i was nearly brought to tears by the end of 'mother,' but...
'keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going; it will all be okay in the end.' by the end of that sample, i was very shocked to find that i couldn't quite see my computer screen very well because of the actual tears that had welled up in my eyes. even now as i'm typing this i can feel them coming back merely at the thought. the lyrics of every song, especially this one, have spoken to me on a level i never would have anticipated, and i'm blown apart by every track that comes on. being someone, who's been struggling horribly with depression and anxiety and suicidal urges lately, this song feels like weirdly therapeutic to me, and fuck its hitting me hard
this seriously might have contender to be album of the year for me. i think i might have to agree with fantano when he said this is this generation's equivalent of daft punk's 'discovery'. absolutely phenomenal. i honestly might go back and listen to 'worlds' again, maybe i've been missing something, or maybe ive been looking at it the wrong way

man, I needed to hear that more than I realised.
Just now i was listening to this and when i heard those last words I broke down
I felt the whole time like the pitched version of Porter's voice was his inner child, singing to the world in synch with the outer Porter, both being the only ones who understand each other's joy, love, sadness, and pain, as they both lived through this life and suffered through this world as one. This is why I wasn't surprised at all to learn that the voice was his and not a female singer.
I didn't feel the drawing to be creepy at all, it looks so wholesome to me, like an avatar of ourselves in our minds when we are thinking and reflecting. I don't know about everyone else, but the voice that talks inside my head is always slightly higher pitched than my real voice, like it belongs to the inner child inside of me, the real me. The real you.
I feel like Porter could be transgender, and is stuck in the closet and is battling with his female self inside to make a decision to come out... thats why he feels so much better using the female singing voice to get things out..because hes more comfortable as her...but thats me being trans and reading into it.

This song has been my mantra for the past 2 months and has helped me learn to heal. "And you carry your enemies." People say hurtful things but we carry it with us like it's our own voice. "It's not the voice of all the others. You've only said it to yourself" we then spend thinking about how awful we are. To heal is to break this cycle and realize how much we're hurting ourselves. To understand the voice of all the others is to realize how everyone else is hurt just like we are because they too are carrying their enemies with them. This is why having understanding is so important. When we are kind to others we are kind to ourselves.
I actually have no idea how to describe what I just watched. Having a repeating picture follow you through the woods is some creepypasta stuff, but its animated in a captivating way with other wonderful augmenting animations. This man is redefining music interacting with video

Okay, I didn't see myself making one of these comments, but here I went and made one.
This song just spoke to me in some way I didn't know was possible. The first time I heard it I just thought it was about Porter reflecting on his years in making music. But after listening to it over and over, I've realized that it doesn't have to be just for one person.
This song can apply to everyone who's had a struggle in life or is still struggling. Like how in the song it isn't "the voice of all the others" but your own voice in your head that's making you struggle. And at the end of the song it says to, "keep going" because, "it will all be okay in the end."
This comment is just my release from my problems. I'm going through a struggle that doesn't involve anybody else but me, and nobody needs to help with it. But if I get help, it will make the struggle much easier to overcome.
So really listen to this song, know that you are not alone in the problems you are facing. You can fix it, and it'll be just fine once you do.
Just remember, don't give up. Don't lose to the inner voice that's hurting you. That's because, "everything will be okay in the end."

Porter's lyricism embodies all the struggles creators feel with their work. All these feelings packaged into one incredible album. It's all so relatable and "comforting". I can't wait for the full release
I feel that. I think everyone can identify with that sense of not being good enough in one way or another. For me, the lyrics embody the struggles people go through with their life.
I've been a fan of porter for a long time and I feel like this is his best work yet.

As a person with clinical depression that requires meds, this song hits home. All i ever want to do is make everyone else happy and will go above and beyond at that, despite knowing how much i hate myself, how much i always feel like i'm bothering people, a "burden". I always tell myself that everyone hates me and i'm a waste, and yet those words never come from anyone else, only my own head.
The part "yeah do your worst, all at once" is especially real, like hurting yourself so no one else can hurt you more.
Nurture is a surreal album that feels the closest to expressing the ups and downs of depression and having to deal with that all at once.

I took my 6 year old son to school this morning and he played Mirror on Spotify as we walked to the gates (as well as Shelter and Sad Machine). I was so happy that we have your music as one of the threads that binds us together. In the video that's kind of how I see those lines. This is a song I didn't know I needed, let alone this severely.
This year's been a global and personal hell- I write this comment under a fire-tainted orange California sky, with a stalker personally targeting and harassing me for almost half a year, a great deal of personal and family loss, and internal struggle with my own projects (coincidentally, all "sounding like one another" as well), it's like the year couldn't just let itself be a globally awful time, and decided to go out of its way to realize several of my fears and worries.
So much about this song heals right where there's been pain. It's a relief I didn't think I'd feel in 2020 any time soon. Thank you, Porter.

This video hits so close to home. It feels cathartic, to put words to the inner voice; feels like having an argument with your own criticism and eventually coming to a conclusion where it becomes gentler on you and encourages you instead of berating you.

I've struggled with depression and anxiety for years. I grew up on songs like Sad Machine and Goodbye to a World. Now I'm in a better place and on medication that helps, and it's like the songs grew with me. Something Comforting, this song, Look at the Sky - I'm more drawn to upbeat and hopeful songs now. They're so wonderful to hear. The end of this song - the "keep going, it will all be okay in the end" makes me cry every time.
I feel like a burden on everyone else in my life, and I don't know how I'm not supposed to be. I never know what I'm doing wrong in a situation, but I'm just gonna say screw it. I'm just going to focus on what I love, and nobody is going to stop me. Thank you, Porter, so very much.

This song reminds me of when I was between houses, over and over, constantly driving from a new couch to sleep on. Doing all I can to keep from being homeless. Actually, you hit the nail on the head! In the Offical Audio version posted two weeks ago, Porter made a comment about how the song is about how toxic self-critique can be, and sometimes the worst you'll ever hear about yourself is from yourself.

"really porter? i hate mirrors" but when i watched it i was suprised it wasn't about mirrors i was very reliefed that it wasn't about mirrors the thing is almost everything i use reflects so i feel anxious and scared cause it's like a mirror

This is absolutely timeless. The lyrics alone have made my journey to self-positivity so much better and less difficult, but the way its presented reminds me so much of my own daydreaming episodes. Though not as cutely simple and child-like, the temporary flashing of images, the frame-by-frame progression of the character as the camera walks through the forest, it's all just too accurate.
Then, when the video ends and the imaginations disappear, you see the world around you and realize it's just as beautiful without the art than it is with it. I already remind myself to turn off the daydreams and see the world around me, but seeing this makes it so much easier. Then after I understand the lyrics, I just feel so much better about myself.
I genuinely feel like this video changed my thinking, and that it's changed for the better.

I often feel that my struggles weren't that bad and that I'm the one who is weak because I overthink things and it's my mind going chaos when the social situation is objectively normal. Nothing has been said to me, but I get so sensitive and start hating myself for being so sensitive. And I bubble it up inside myself because I don't want to inconvenience others of my insecure feelings. I just get so overwhelmed and stressed towards myself and at times, I spiral into thinking about su*cide. Honestly, I don't even know if what I just wrote is even valid.
