I would be the same way if that had happened to me. But, my mom was a lioness! She had a friend over one night . I was a pre teen. He was drunk. When he lost sight of my mom he went looking for her. He opened my bedroom door and was calling for her. I woke up screaming. Before I knew it my mom was there. I truly believe that Sterns manipulated this child with gifts and pocket change and told her it would all go away if her mother found out about what was going on between them
With that said I believe the mother suspected something was going on but as long as they denied it, the mother managed to believe there was nothing going on
I also believe that up until Madeline turned 13 Sterns probably did pictures and touched her sexually
Upon turning 13 he looked at her as a woman and wanted to have intercourse. At that time Madeline most likely refused and threatened to tell her Mother
Then he knew he was about to be exposed he decided to kill her
I do believe the mother should be prosecuted for not protecting her daughter when she needed protection from him

Exactly. There are many more Maddies. We’ve got to get our crap together & start actually protecting all of our kids. We’ve got to figure out what we can do at schools, in communities to make kids feel safe enough to tell. They’re not ever going to tell the first time they’re being asked about it. So we need to figure out how to ask them how they’re doing without making them feel uncomfortable with questions about abuse. We dont want to go the other direction & make kids think they have to say there was abuse even if there was not to make people stop grilling them about it. I think we probably need yearly school presentations where cops, therapists, teachers go over grooming, etc. so the kids feel they can step up & tell.

As I sit here and watch this "person" (if she's human at all)....a sense of rage rises within me to see that she herself is not a hysterical mess, literally - and not lying in a hospital bed under heavy sedation having learned what has happened to her 14 year old daughter! She is devoid of any human love, caring, concern, empathy, or ethical/moral role modeling for her now dead 14 year old child. Nobody has to remind me that we are seeing this exact kind of scenario increasingly within in our society every single day. To me....the "cause" has more to do with what is lacking in the HEARTS, not the "minds" of human beings in 2024.

Remember they haven’t found Maddie’s body yet. I believe she is still holding out hope in her mind that Maddie could still be alive, Stephan didn’t murder her. She’s offering theories of what Stephen COULD have done, not what he DID do. In fact I think HOPING for the best, hoping she is alive, hoping that she’s not hurt, hoping Stephan didn’t murder her, hoping there still measure of good left in him that he is not murderer, he couldn’t have murdered her -is she has left, to be alive.
For someone who’s experienced deep depression, depth of suicide, holding onto hope that tomorrow will be a better days is what is keeping her alive. It’s childlike, naive, and maybe too hopeful, is not healthy coping mechanism can blind her from living in reality, but I can understand why she needs it to keep her sanity when forced to the accept the unimaginable. Causes her to use denial to accept the worst, hopelessness. If this is true, after listening to her last interview, got partial immunity in April, month after Maddie has been dead, the lack of emotion in her voice could mean she’s still been in denial, or in shock, maybe delusional, hand’t fully grasped Maddie was never coming home. As time goes on without Maddie, she would have no choice but to accept it. My guess she’s been admitted into a mental facility, possibly on suicide watch.
I really believe SS took advantage of her mental illness to access Maddie, groomed both of them, gaslighted her into accepting the crazy sleeping arrangements. After hours and months of investigation, they determined she didn’t know or involved SS SA and murder of Maddie. They don’t plan to charge her so far. And honestly. I weep for her. And I pray she recovers and finds peace, and Jesus in her life someday.
Let us Be at peace Maddie is in eternal rest in the Father’s arm, will never experience the pain and suffering in her short life ever again.
Rest in eternal peace, sweet Maddie. ❤❤❤

@@l.c.7955 Gaslighting. " Gaslighting is an insidious form of manipulation and psychological control. Victims of gaslighting are deliberately and systematically fed false information that leads them to question what they know to be true, often about themselves. They may end up doubting their memory, their perception, and even their sanity. Over time, a gaslighter’s manipulations can grow more complex and potent, making it increasingly difficult for the victim to see the truth."
From accounts from his parents, friends, girlfriends, SS was very good at gaslighting, was very manipulative, and liked to argue persistently, overbearing them until they give up and let him win, and get his way. He was also an emotional bully. Can understand how SS gaslight Jen into submission, even doubt basic instinct. I think he also convinced her he was different than other men, he would never hurt Maddie, treated her like his own daughter, he only wanted to snuggle with her, because she needed him to. And Maddie told Stephan's parents she wanted to.. SS must have groomed her. And Jen said..Maddie asked her to have "slumber party" with SS, can watch TV, etc. SS probably made it seem so innocent and normal. He chose times when Jen was put out, needed deep sleeping - bipolars require more sleep to balance brain and nerves, be able to function next day. She needed Maddie to sleep somewhere else. SS was there to take over, it's understandable why she believed Maddie would be safe with him. She said it didn't happen often, on rare occasions. Tragically, she really needed that sleep...it was supposed just that once. Because of SS - last time. So sad for young Maddie- she had no chance.
It's an injustice people prejudge Jen, automatically assumed she acted on her own ---leaving out the predator and groomer who controlled her. They've been so unfair to her, wrongly convicted her, deserved punishment. Wanted to tar and feather her....because they prejudged, leaving out pertinent evidence,
People can not grasp groomers power of gaslighting their victims. Because it's between the groomer and victim alone, he has the balance of power. In Jen's case, he took advantage of her worst insecurity- being abandoned and left alone. Used it to control her to extent she was helpless to save herself. Truth is we don't know the nature of their relationship, their dynamics, and SS manipulation tactics. Don't know how lived in the home. Don't know enough about Jen, who she really is in daily life, what decisions she was groomed into, what was from her. It would more digging into her life, growing up, history of mental illness, etc. It's possible she was examined by LE psychologists treated victims of groomers.
At least by July, investigation was completed after hours and hours of investigating through SS cell phone, computer, and Jen's - pictures, texts, emails, voicemails, times, dates, locations indicated phone pings, and more...they determined Jen was not aware of the SA, CSAM, and murder, nor was she involved. Because materials of investigation has been released, it means they've completed their investigation - SS was the lone perpetrator. As of now, Jen will not be charged. She still deserves fair treatment based on facts.

As a child victim of SA by my stepfather for 11 years, I can assure anyone that Madeline did NOT think she was having a 'relationship' or 'in love' with her abuser. She didn't believe she was 'dating' him, and if she thought that it's because he convinced her that's what it was but 100% she did not want that. She initially loved him as a father figure, and then she hated him for doing those things to her and was conflicted if the rest of the family thought he was wonderful. Her eyes clearly show her distress, depression, sadness.

11 years is a huge part of childhood. Almost all of it. Step fathers can be so vital to a child’s upbringing if they are decent men but so often there are problems. I was asked to say goodbye to daddy when I was 8 and given a drunk for a new daddy soon after. Thankfully I was never SA’d and I know that elevates the damage to a whole other level but he hated me. So one left, one hated, and it took almost 50 years after that for me to like myself. I hope you are younger and you don’t waste time. Get the help you need to free yourself as soon as you can.

I haven’t gotten through this whole audio, but in one of her police interviews she is asked about her text to Stephan “Maddy’s no longer sleeping with me I can’t risk it,” and when asked what that text meant, she said “I have no idea.” I cannot for the life of me think of ANY reasonable explanation of what she could have been referring to. she not only turned her back, she FULL WELL KNEW and did nothing. I’ll never understand. Having a child should be a privilege and not a right. Maddy deserved so much better on so many levels. Even hearing the details of her being so sleepy and so anxious and struggling in school, yet still powering on and trying to navigate everything that comes with adolescence in this day and age ON HER OWN, in spite of the horrific hell that her home life was, shatters my heart. And we’ll never know, but I’ll go out on a limb and say that Maddy would have confided in her “mother” if she felt like Jen would be of any help. She’d rather have child raped repeatedly in her own bed than be alone.
That she offered him a lawyer after seeing that photo means she’s just as sick and twisted as he is. Maybe even worse because she had to overcome the natural instinct of a mother to protect her child’s even with their own life if necessary, in order to facilitate a situation that allowed him to easily abuse and then murder her daughter, and to then help him cover it up.

She is clearly withholding information and feigning any true concern for her daughter. She seems too dim-witted to maintain any believable excuse as to why she had zero suspicion of SA, while describing the predatory grooming behavior both she and SS committed against poor sweet Maddie. Even after learning of the SA, JS is unable to summon the ability to even fake an appropriate response. It’s unthinkable what that child endured.
