What I’ve learned from +20years in child welfare work, is that SA is the crime that to many people ignore or refuse to see. I understand how his parents are upset about all the public attention and what they see as them being targeted, chastised & blamed. However, the question always asked in any horrific criminal case is “how does this happen?” , “What went wrong?”Or “how can we stop this from happening?” The public attention is what’s needed to find answers to these and other questions.
There’s plenty of blame to share between SS and JS IMO, and even if not criminal in nature, it seems appropriate to also ask the extended family around Maddie what could, or should, have been done differently. If, by shining a light on this case, there’s ONE parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle etc, that identifies a warning sign in their own family and steps in to stop abuse, to save a child, to ask those awful questions… isn’t it worth it? I’m not in their shoes (by the grace of God) and admittedly I can’t speak for what they are dealing with. That doesn’t mean however that none of us have been in similar situations, is all this worth it? if there’s one less child abused, one less child murdered? one less family secret still hidden? IDK how others feel, but for me, The child first and always. Safety is paramount to everything, and the public needs the information to learn. This situation is NOT the fault of “TH-camrs” and even the channels that use cases for grifting are not responsible for Maddie’s abuse or her death. If one person watches that livestream that then sees a situation similar with a child they know, and steps in to help the child isn’t that some good coming out of a bad thing? Just my thoughts, maybe just a rambling old lady 🤷🏻‍♀️. HTC, I appreciate you bringing them on and allowing these parents to speak their truth. 🫶🏼🫂

I heard the one when the officers told the parents that SS drove back to the parents' house in the middle of the night, after telling the father that he had to be at the hotel w him and Jen (to ensure the father wasn't at the home when SS went back there in the middle of the night). Both of them were questioning that perhaps they've never known their son. It seemed like we were witnessing a horrifying and rude awakening in the middle of their nightmare. They didn't seem like they were defending him as much during that conversation, it seemed like they feared him.

"Unconditional love" should not occur after something this horrific. If one of my family did that, I would never speak to them again or help them in jail. Unconditional love can be harmful when kids never learn to grow up or take responsibility for anything. Its interesting Stephan was stubborn and refused to go to school. He was in a power play with his parents from a young age, and he always got what he wanted. This explains his interest in childrens hobbies, Disney. and his inability to work. I wanted the interviewers to ask about drug use, it was reported both Stephan and Jenn were meth users, and Stephan was on Ritalin from a young age. I think there will be more bombshell information about this case. I think the 2 most likely scenarios are, Jenn knew about the SA, but Stephan murdered Maddie on his own, and Jenn is staying quiet because she doesnt want her knowledge of the abuse to come out. Or, Jenn was involved in the murder to protect them both from the truth coming out. Either way Jenn is not as upset as a normal mother would be in this situation.

One would think your shock at learning of your child causing harm to another would just be the norm for any and all parents, but I can tell you that it's not. My blood father raised me to be "tough" and to be "a man" (a violent monster), so that's what I became, even though I had swore to myself that I'd never be anything like him, but in the end I turned out to be even worse.Though I've never harmed an animal, a woman, a child, or anyone who could be classified as elderly, that was one of the few good things he beat into me, and I'll always be grateful to him for teaching me that lesson when I wasn't much more than a toddler.
Our parents have the greatest influence on what we become, and I whole heartedly believe these two "parents" had the greatest influence over what their son became, especially after having listened to their recorded interactions with law enforcement, and this interview as well. It made me ill to my stomach when the mother threw out that story about Maddy being so happy or proud of herself to have woken up in bed with her leg over stephans in the morning. I wouldn't trust one word out of either of their mouths when it came to Maddy or to their sweet, but hard done by wittle stephan. The only thing I didn't like in this interview is that Debbie always wants to blame Jennifer. Yes Jennifer seemed to turn a blind eye, she had a lot of the same issues that SS has, low self esteem, and all the mental issues. She should have never been raising this poor little Angel, she couldn't even take care of herself. And unfortunately she wanted a man so much, possibly more then Maddie which in itself is horrible. I could never put the company of a man before my children, ever!! She has issues for sure!! But regardless, that didn't mean that because she told him to go up stairs and sleep that it made it OK for him to do what he did to Maddie, and it seems like Debbie wants to put most of that on Jennifer!!

@@SharpLife4 yes, it was unfortunate they did take not Maddie aside and attempt to learn more about the sleeping arrangements and what else was going on. But it’s Jen alone who is responsible for what happened to Maddie; she facilitated the environment in which his abuse flourished. Jen stated she did not want a “Woody Allen situation” and that her own mother had drilled into her head to “never trust a man” -- and yet she gave her seal of approval for one to share a bed with her minor child. The fact that Stephan didn’t protest, much less deny, this strange, abnormal, and inappropriate arrangement should have been a massive red flag to Jen. The fact that he’s a grown man who can’t hold a job, has no direction or ambition in his life, relies on his elderly parents to survive, and spends whatever money he comes by (steals or lies to get) on games and toys rather than necessary car repairs and bills should have been the first red flag to Jen that this guy is not the adult figure she should have around her child, much less be a pseudo-stepfather figure to Maddie. But Jen obviously cared more about the little that Stephan could do for her than whether he was a decent role model to have around her daughter. And unfortunately for Maddie not only did she have to have a loser like him hanging around and acting as an authority figure to her, but worst of all he was a monster who preyed on for years. Maddie took the backseat in Jen’s life, and nothing good ever comes of prioritizing your wants over your child’s needs.

I would only caution these parents to discern what is given to Stephan by way of money and literature. I eventually understood with my own son how manipulative he is. This pertains to the different 'currency' used inside prisons. I am careful not to enable his bad behavior in any way, and sometimes, I have accidentally fallen for his manipulation. The biggest question is "how did Stephan afford all these collections?" Warhammer is not cheap, warcraft is a monthly subscription, pokemon cards are ridiculously expensive especially if they have been "graded", star wars collectibles are not cheap. (My husband has warhammer, myself and my 25yr old son both play warcraft, my husband and my father-in-law have pokemon card collections)
Neither Jenn nor Stephan's parents have been able to answer this question. It absolutely terrifies me that he was selling those images and videos of Maddie.
Maddie was failed by every adult in her life, Stephan's parents could've called cps when they recognised the red flags, Jenn should've been protecting her daughter, the roommates could've said something (i believe one of them works in a school so is a mandated reporter), her teachers and counsellors are madated reporters (however i do give them a slight pass as they have only ever known Maddie to be the way she was and with Jenn pushing the adhd, autism, anxiety etc from a very early age they missed red flags due to believing it was just the way Maddie was because they knew no different), her grandmother could've said something, called cps, kept Maddie with her, Juan could've insisted Maddie had her own room instead of being worried about "rent".

So, they believed my lies, allowed me to manipulate them, helped me out when they should have said no. In my case, they were right that I was good deep down and capable of change. My blood boils listening to them. Madeline was a special needs child with anxiety. What was this mother's idea to keep her safe - put a lock on her mother's bedroom door so Madeline would cry and be scared alone at night. Not that her son should have kept his pants on. Normal people do not abuse others no matter what their age is or sleeping arrangements. That being said - I do understand they are in a horrible situation, they love their son and at the same time have their hearts broken due to his actions. As a mother of sons, this is my nightmare - that no matter how I raise my sons they could hurt someone. I do not believe the parents did something wrong for him to become like this. It is not just nurture, it is nature as well and sometimes nature goes wrong.
