Actually the 3 endings feel a lot like they are meant to be part of the same sequence (assuming Ritcher hasn't skimmed on any other details): 1) David comes back to his senses and is arrested for the murders he commited 2) David is interrogated for what he did 3) David is sentenced to jail for life and makes it into the headlines (notice how the picture in the newspaper is a screenshot from ending #1) until he hangs himself to death Ultimately a very logical conclusion to the game, seems like to give the illusion of multiple choices the creator just wrote a single ending and split pieces of it through many routes lol
Thanks Richter for this video, I can't express how much I love this mod, since the first time I played Sven Co-op and found it on a server. The whole ambient, monsters, levels, makes me love this mod and in my opinion, one of the best horror games I've tried along with cry of fear, and whenever I can I make a friend play one of these
My take on the spear you get to defeat The Addiction is that it represents the various needles (IVs, any syringe based medications used to counteract ODs, etc) that the doctors inject into David in their attempts to save him.
The amount of Whiplash Richter just gave me the second I even saw the words "Afraid Of Monsters" is insane, it's seriously good for how old it is and for it's time as a mod itself. Pure art.

For a time of old horror where obnoxious jumpscares was common place, the AoE jumpscares are very meticulously put together and that's what I commend it the most for. You never see other games have a scare this creative. Hell, even the loud obnoxious ones pop up while you're actively fighting enemies, making you freak out and waste ammo on nothing in moment of adrenaline. Thanks for the Spike N Barley shoutout, these were and are still some of the best let's plays from 2010/11, their multiplayer AOM one with Cocyx playing as david Leatheroff was just pire gold! Goofy, corny at times, but hella fun!
Maybe the idea of the addiction boss fight is that using your normal weapons are ways to help your addiction that instead hurt you since fighting an addiction is a long and painful process, but finding the spear is, after all the time and pain, finding the thing that works to help you fight your addiction the most without hurting yourself along the way.
I still haven't beaten this game because I'm a big puss. Thanks for taking me through the endings. I could experience them without shitting myself of fear haha. Cheers.
I think maybe the spear was an analogy for reaching out since spears are known for their reach and it was trying to say that you can only beat addiction by reaching out to others for help or you will just hurt yourself
13:03 in answer to your question, the shotgun closely resembles a Winchester 1897 12 gauge Trench Gun. Edit: I’m not saying thats what it is, I’m just saying thats what it looks very similar to. Dont get your overalls in a knot.

I was a kid when I first played AOMDC. I was one of the people who watched COF's development because I knew their previous game. I still play AOMDC from time to time, especially via Sven Co-op to experience that fun with friends. I listen to the recordings I uploaded to youtube while I'm at work to pass the time just because of how fun it still is.
Fun fact: I grew up in Sweden at the time when this was made, and the horror themes behind it are grounded in very true things that happened. At this time, eugenics had only been reformed and most doctors had still been taught that it works and that it was a legitimate science. On top of that, they still practiced coerced sterilisation of LGBT people. Anyways, long story short: Most academics and doctors at this time had some incredibly fucked up views about mentally ill people. There was this idea that good and evil didn't exist, and that all crimes and bad things could be traced back to people who had some kind of condition or disability (I only exist because my mother asked for a second opinion). A lot of doctors would perform illegal/coerced abortions under false pretences if they suspected an infant was going to have a disability, and abuse towards mentally ill people was super common (and to be fair, still is, nobody's done anything about it). The reason I know about this is because it happened to me, and I was in fact given medication that they said were a bunch of harmless SSRIs... but then I showed them to a real doctor from a different country (admittedly an American doctor, so like, good education, shitty ethics. But still a step up). Truth is, they were extremely powerful antipsychotic meds, and without a legitimate condition that requires such medication, you're going to get brain damage. Ever since then I've heard voices in my head because of how the pills really messed me up over the course of several months. So, yeah, based on a true story. A lot of people experienced these kinds of abuses by the Swedish government. Also to you Americans out there: I get that you want public healthcare, and I respect that. But kindly shut up about the Nordic system, when you praise it, you're just parroting government propaganda. Look into French or Spanish hospitals. They're far less pseudoscientific and respect people's rights.
Afraid of Monsters and Cry of Fear one of my favourite games at all. Thank you for your awesome video, and Andreas for his projects. I hope in the future he gonna bless us with some Afraid of Fear or something like that
I'm not a huge fan of the game nor do I dislike it, but the soundtrack department is still one of the best mysteries of OSTs in my time. The original AoM-intro theme is still unknown by every person that has been looking for it. The bassline resembles Solar Fields' Confusion Illusion but it's confirmed to not be that track. The search continues.
16:02 I think the endings are all connected honestly, regardless of route it's the exact same thing where he kills many people and those are just the sequence of what happened.
Afraid of monsters is a game I have an unhealthy obsession with, I just love everything about it. I don't think there are many games like it, where the game respects the player's time AND intelligence by not trampling them with lore dumps. Just a solid gameplay base with great horror environments. Most games just inconvenience the player in order to make it more scary or whatever but AoM is as fast as you want it to be without ruining the scary mood of the game, just you and your thoughts. And I have to thank Spike and barley (ft. Cockyx) for it. I watched it religiously and tune in every now and then. Heck, I was even recreating the entire AoM campaign in Left 4 Dead 2.
@@thr333stars ah it's on my channel actually, that being because it's still not done. And it's currently in hiatus due the lack of proper gameplay flow, which is pretty much saying is not exactly fun as is. It's pretty far into it though.
Ah the horror nostalgia. it never fails the great jumpscares and terrifying monsters and annoying invisible Face monsters. i wish if they going to make a Remaster version of it.
13:04 I don't know if anyone has already answered but I believe the shotgun is model after either a Mossberg 590 Retro or a Winchester SXP Trench gun. Hope this helps the curious!
17:33 i think it means that its not easy to kill addiction, and that if you try to do it to fast you can hurt yourself, and the only true way to defeat it is to slowly poke and stab away at it until you're eventually sober
Just a tip from someone who has actively used and been around firearms his entire life that "MP5" was technically the MP5K, which is more compact, less accurate and a more covert CQB option compared to the original MP5 it is derived from. The MP5K serves its definite purpose for extreme CQB engagements. BTW, I really dig Your content, Richter Overtime. 👍👍👍👍👍
This entire project is phenomenal, especially with how personally invested it is for the dev's life. Emma had better find out that he is indeed dedicated.
I find it comfy aswell, same with cry of fear. I think its the enviroments that do it for me, I used to spend alot of time as a kid wandering in an around town at the wee hours between mid night and sunrise when noone else was around, not even weirdos. The cool air, the freedom and the "depressing" envirement around me felt comforting. I still enjoy late night walks now.
My first experience with this game was actually way back probably during 2010 or 2011 in Sven Coop. Someone named Cocyx ran a cooperative Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut server. What made it so fun was that the admin would occasionally join in as "David Leatherhoff," who would then proceed to do things such as: - Manipulating objects in the levels to block or hinder players, or alternatively mess with their heads - Outright walking towards players with a knife/firearms and killing them (players in Sven Coop at the time were resistant to friendly fire) - Watching players from a distance or from inaccessible areas such as behind windows or fences, especially early on in the game - Teleporting players into cages or out of the way areas to mess around with them - Changing the player's camera to David's perspective, revealing that they're being watched from above with just enough time to spin around when they gain control of their view back to see David watching over them with a rifle or something of the sort I did manage to eventually play the original, but the server that hosted the game itself was very fun. The twitchers unironically freaked me the hell out.
Probably means I need to stop playing Baldur's Gate 3 and actually sit down to watch this video! Happy to hear I'm not the only one that remembers the server!
Thanks for covering this. Cry of Fear is infamous but more props need to be given to Afraid of Monsters. Cry of Fear wouldn't exist without it

Thanks for the Spike N Barley shoutout, these were and are still some of the best let's plays from 2010/11, their multiplayer AOM one with Cocyx playing as david Leatheroff was just pire gold! Goofy, corny at times, but hella fun!
I swear AOM and Cry Of Fear was the most underrated horror hame back then, now both games are getting recognition it deserved
22:27 “Oh what’s this, BOOP, Superjuice”
The spike and barley mention holy moly. Didn't expect that but it is what introduced me to AoM
For someone whose barely into his 20's, Richter Overtime tends to "Old man Yells at cloud" wax poetic about the not to distant past.
Tbh, seeing Rumpel pouring so much love and care into his projects is inspiring as someone who is also working on a few fan projects.
I just realized, the song you played at 19:57 is At The Heart Of It All by Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails for the album Further Down The Spiral
I don’t why I find him seeing “And a giant fucking face” so humerus. “The fucking face”
Dont get your overalls in a knot.
bruh, video was posted 46 seconds ago and your comment is from 10 hours ago
how did you answer to the video already? it was posted 1 min ago
@@H3ADROOMyeah because of the patreon, have you been living under a rock

HOW DID YOU POST THIS COMMENT BEFORE THE VIDEO
always love these mod reviews/retrospectives, and that hoodie thing is just wholesome
0:10 resident evil. Nothing’s more fun than going through a haunted house, while making tactical decisions and blasting zombie’s heads off.
7:39 This picture, I never knew it was an actual picture for a real life music album. I quite literally got jumpscared by it while I was reading my college textbook for history of rock and roll (album is "In the Aeroplane over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel)
7:38 banana girl? what the hell are you talking about?? that is a music album. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
Thank you for covering this, pyro needed a new content idea
I know it's been said by many others, but the spike and barely mention it is something I'd never hear out of another youtuber. They're classic youtube let's plays, and I always go back every year to just have a good hit of nostalgia. Thank you.
Fun fact:
I grew up in Sweden at the time when this was made, and the horror themes behind it are grounded in very true things that happened.
Also to you Americans out there:
I get that you want public healthcare, and I respect that.
I hope in the future he gonna bless us with some Afraid of Fear or something like that
7:38 BANANA GIRL??? Come on bruh...that's the album cover of "The Aeroplane Over The Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel...
Thank you, I'm so happy someone pointed it out. It's a great album!
The In the Aeroplane over the Sea cover losing the Tamborine headed girl is so fucking hilarious actually.
The biggest jumpscare is seeing the Neutral Milk Hotel album cover
You just unlocked a memory for me, this game has been in the back of my head for years
I'm not a huge fan of the game nor do I dislike it, but the soundtrack department is still one of the best mysteries of OSTs in my time. The original AoM-intro theme is still unknown by every person that has been looking for it. The bassline resembles Solar Fields' Confusion Illusion but it's confirmed to not be that track. The search continues.
I thought I was the only one still watching those old Spike and Barley vids. They're my favs and I wish they would come back together again.
16:02
I think the endings are all connected honestly, regardless of route it's the exact same thing where he kills many people and those are just the sequence of what happened.
That's a very interesting way to look at it.
maybe the monsters he killed was people
@@Turtle69696maybe he was afraid of those monsters
I love your use of Black Mesa tracks throughout this video. Amazing game with an even better soundtrack.
Can you link AoM campaign? I would highly appreciate it, searched for AoM content on workshop, didn't find this
@@thr333stars ah it's on my channel actually, that being because it's still not done.
And it's currently in hiatus due the lack of proper gameplay flow, which is pretty much saying is not exactly fun as is.
It's pretty far into it though.
13:01 I believe the shotgun appears to be a mix of a Remington 870 and a Mossberg 590
Ah the horror nostalgia. it never fails the great jumpscares and terrifying monsters and annoying invisible Face monsters. i wish if they going to make a Remaster version of it.
Random thing Rumpel wound up working on Payday 2 as a level designer. He's responsible for the White Christmas and Car Shop heists.
played this a ton as a kid and never realized that neutral milk hotel album cover was in the game. love this guy's taste in music.
Same honestly, it's hilarious that Richter called the character on the album cover "banana girl" too lol
13:04 I don't know if anyone has already answered but I believe the shotgun is model after either a Mossberg 590 Retro or a Winchester SXP Trench gun. Hope this helps the curious!
24:00 sorry what? 20 years old and already engaged???

what's really impressive is how that hoddie you bought managed to fit you for this entire time, you never outgrew it
I mean I bought it in 10th grade man I was already 16
@@RichterOvertime I'm European (Italy) so I had no idea 10th grade was 2nd highschool
7:40 Motherfucker just put a Neutral Milk Hotel album cover in his game. Respect.
This entire project is phenomenal, especially with how personally invested it is for the dev's life.
Emma had better find out that he is indeed dedicated.
The team needs to make more horror games
Did you not know that "banana girl painting" was a neutral milk hotel album?
For a 14 year old to build a horror mod, and make it fun + scary is amazing. Talented as heck.
ahhh Afraid of Monsters, i find this game rather comfy... even if the game is actually pretty scary, especially when you get to the pitch black forest
7:38 "Seeing this Banana Girl on a painting" /mu/ will never recover
This game made me cry of fear because I’m afraid of monsters.
My first experience with this game was actually way back probably during 2010 or 2011 in Sven Coop. Someone named Cocyx ran a cooperative Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut server. What made it so fun was that the admin would occasionally join in as "David Leatherhoff," who would then proceed to do things such as:
- Manipulating objects in the levels to block or hinder players, or alternatively mess with their heads
- Outright walking towards players with a knife/firearms and killing them (players in Sven Coop at the time were resistant to friendly fire)
- Watching players from a distance or from inaccessible areas such as behind windows or fences, especially early on in the game
- Teleporting players into cages or out of the way areas to mess around with them
- Changing the player's camera to David's perspective, revealing that they're being watched from above with just enough time to spin around when they gain control of their view back to see David watching over them with a rifle or something of the sort
I did manage to eventually play the original, but the server that hosted the game itself was very fun. The twitchers unironically freaked me the hell out.
trust me i know bro i literally talked about this stuff in the vid lmao
Probably means I need to stop playing Baldur's Gate 3 and actually sit down to watch this video! Happy to hear I'm not the only one that remembers the server!
