- Commerical halibut fishing in the Pacific Ocean out of Alaska. You will be able to see how we set gear clean fish and haul giant halibut in Alaska. We can catch up to 500 halibut and day and a good day can haul in 10,000 pounds of Alaskan halibut ready for the worlds freezer. We were fishing in the Pacific Ocean out of a small village called king cove Alaska. We have a 5 man crew working 20 hours a day for trips. I made this video in august of 2019. A how to movie on fishing the giant halibuts of Alaska. Just an honest question, I have seen many boats out there fishing and it seems that most of them have caught many fishes. At this rate, will it be sustainable?
Cool thanks for asking! Yes for sure! So our boat is a commercial longliners boat. Halibut, King Crab and black cod are all federally protected with the IFQ program. Every halibut we catch every year is strictly managed by the feds. Ifq is individual fishing quota. So we buy these shares for huge amounts of money and every year we get to fish x amount of fish. The feds study fish populations “ that we pay for “ and every year they tell us if our shares went up or down after three studies. If the studies show the numbers are falling they cut our quota. So it’s pretty well run for being ran by the feds. We pay a lot of money to have them control the halibut populations. It’s goo and bad. But ya I think the program is working and numbers are going up!

Who cuts the Halibut down to size for the retail market, is the meat flown by Plane down to the lower 48 to sell as fresh caught. This would all have to take place in a few hours to sell as fresh in fish markets.?
We deliver to the cannery and they process and freeze. We’re to far out on the Aleutian chain for fresh market. Our fish gets put in the frozen market.
The Captain really know the spot for those halibut.

What boat is that ? I used to fish outta Petersburg as well . Interesting methods btw seems very effective . Long lining is the only fishery I’ve yet fished and I don’t think I’ve seen it done this way . I’m not sure tho . If this is common then I’ll shut the hell up lol
yeah pretty common snap gear is favored around our area
Do you hunt out what depth they are in and then hammer that specific depth the whole trip?
We usually have our go to general area but they do move quite a bit from the following years. Usually we set out all of our gear then we will move or stay depending on what we’re catching. A lot of times we have to move areas because of wind or if we are getting our fish eaten by sea lions or killer whales we have to relocate also.

So we usually fish between 40-60 fathoms. Depends on the bottom we’re fishing.

How thick is your longline?
Hey tanniu we use 5/16 ground line for our gear. Works pretty well for us. Strong enough and thin enough to be able to snap the gear on without too much trouble. Thanks
@@dustysageroutdoors I myself does turbot fish in Baffin Island Nunavut Canada. Town called Pangnirtung. I go on sea ice when it forms ice and have my heated 8x12 cabin and do some longline fishing.
That sounds pretty comfy, I follow a few Nunavut pages on facebook, i get a kick out of all the meat you guys get to harvest Good stuff!

No they have enough tension on them to stay put. It takes a lot to make the snap slide.

Actually I’m 6ft, and it was about a foot longer than my wingspan. I made a second video where i measured that fish with a tape measure. You should check it out. Cheers!

That's very cruel thing to do , let them die by their own , why brutally murder it ?
Mohammed Parveez hmmm we try to kill them the fastest way possible. People eat seafood and we feed the people.
A quick death by stabbing/hitting them in the head is better than letting them suffocate slowly out of the water which is what many fishermen do. If anything, I was grateful to see they try to kill then quickly instead of letting them flop from lack of oxygen like most, which is slow horrible death (and affects the meat with distress hormones).
PozoBlue thanks for commenting. I think our operation is as quick as possible. Quick hit on the head and it’s usually cleaned and in the hole in minutes. As painless as possible.
Cruel and insensitive way to handle the fish
Nothing wrong with earning a living. Those fish are not like humans. They don't care about your comment. Or your virtue signaling. Love fishing!! These guys are pretty cool.
Science shows that fish don't feel pain the way we do, it's more like a robot reacting to a stimuli. Just about every fish out there gets eaten by something too, they don't just die of old age.
Yes indeed, the unecessary gaffing causes pain. This is supported by the medway report as far back as 1980. The assumption that watching halibut or any other fishing will automatically assume there is cruelty does not and should not prohibit people from looking for the more humane fishing techniques and fishermen.
Ok. Understand but what about over fishing Bieng a professional Chef why has the cost gone up over the last 10 yrs while the fish get smaller and smaller???
Same for sword fish Mahi Mahi that's why it says market price on my menu !!!
