Thanks for the comment and joining us Leslie! It must be the camera perspective. We legally must retain all halibut that meet the minimum 32" size. Throwing back smaller legal sized halibut in order to keep larger ones is called highgrading and is illegal.

Why don't you hold onto the undesirable fish like the shark and toothed flounder to use for bait?
Anything that's not dead we put back. Most the time the stuff we catch is too much trouble to deal with for using as bait. The sharks dull our blades, and honestly we don't catch many flounder. We mostly use beat up cod when we get them.

Could you do a video on the knots you use for crabbing? I add different length here and switch lead lines from shrimp to crab pots. Do you just use a half hitch to connect to pot and bouy? I have big loops and have to pass the length of rope through but it can be challenging with 400ft for shrimp
We will try to do a video on some of the different knots we use. In the meantime try a sheetbend. Here is an example www.animatedknots.com/sheet-bend-knot. That will work good for crabline, just use caution when bringing it through the block, as it may want to pop out.

Interesting difference in perspectives regarding what constitutes 'light clothing'.
When it gets hot around here we tend to wear no more than a single layer of fabric like cotton.
So we don't get scuzzy arms and splattered with slime, lol. It got hot later in the set though, Matt took his off.

Is there a " slot" that you are allowed to keep or is it just over 35"? If so, what has been the largest Halibut to be landed by EIS? Enjoy following your adventures.
Thanks Michael. Any halibut over 32" can be retained and high grading is illegal. We don't really target larger fish because the smaller ones work best for our market, but I would say 200 pounds round weight is probably the largest we have landed.

Hi whoknots. Our permit is for area 3A, which extends west of Cape Spencer to the south end of Kodiak Island, so basically the central Gulf of Alaska. We flip the fish over to keep the blood from pooling on the white side, maybe more habit from the derby days prior to IFQ. That is also the side that is always up when we clean and measure them, so we flip them over that way from the beginning to make it easier to handle later.

When we handle them to clean and measure they are white side up. So it just makes it easier to flip them over from the start.
A silly question, why are throwing back what look to be perfectly good fish? I know there size limits but some of those that were thrown back looked pretty decent size.
Hi Dennis, great question. The legal size limit is 32" and up. We measure all the fish that are close so we don't unwittingly throw over legal fish that could be retained. High-grading is illegal in the halibut IFQ fishery, and it makes more work to reset gear to catch fish you could have kept.

We release them, they are a pretty weak fish. Get beat up pretty easily, often times there will be a skate on the same hook (the skate attempted to eat the arrowtooth and got hook instead).

They don't have an air bladder, so there is no barotrauma. It is very important to release them carefully and minimize the amount of time out of the water. That is why we shake the undersize fish right away and get them back into the water.

There is some interest in them, so we were going to do a trial run in our store. They do make fantastic bait, but would definitely prefer to sell them.

6-8 hours depending on which one, the last set always get longest soak.

first of all great video. i have 1 question though. how deep where you fishing for the halibut because you guys caught a blackcod and those like to hang around at deeper depths
Hey Fred. We were fishing in 50 -70 fathoms, so not too deep. There are usually a few black cod hanging out in this area, always small ones.

@@fredsmagets3337 When I began fishing, it was on a 75' longliner. We fished black cod in 250 - 900 fathoms. Sometimes it would take an hour just to get the buoy line in.

Have you ever tried smoking the female roe (gonads) they taste like a rich Pate on toast. We don't have Halibut here but do that with all our big fish.
We haven't, but wondered how they would taste. The eggs are very small so it seems as though they would be very smooth and rich.

Юнга вообще, в море ходит чтобы поспать на корыте с поводками, ни азарта рыбацкого, ни интереса к делу. За три дня ни разу палубу не намыл. Кто-то из своих непутёвого племянничка пристроил, так в море работать ходят, а не кататься. Неужели на берегу нет пацанов по расторопней?
Look I know these guys have been doing this for a long time and sees fish as dollars signs but the are not handling these fish humanely in my opinion.
Don't yawn on a boat kid there is always something to do.
We have an order of operations, can't gut using the table while we need to pin hooks. And to be fair, he had the boring job, I'd be yawning too.

Yep old mate on the hooks is looking a bit bored at 14:10 ! Someone has to do the less interesting jobs and he did lay those hooks in the bucket beautifully!!!
