    This makes me homesick and miss being out there working/fishing. These videos are the best. I seem to remember a Mr. Walling many moons ago when I was in elementary school in Juneau. Cool stuff man I hope you load more videos!

    I grew up in Juneau, did traditional longlining for halibut and black cod on a schooner in the Bering Sea for years, and ended up in LA as an attorney from a top law school. I have to say that in all my years of schooling, Roger Walling was the best and most influential teacher I ever had in my life. He instilled something in me that carried me through every hobby, job and career I’ve had. I love watching this video. Maybe the second most influential person was my high school boss, Tom Mungle. I know you know him. There’s nothing like the work ethic I learned from Tom’s unique incentives based on his commission plan-I earned more as a kid by hustling than any of my peers in ordinary hourly jobs. I was very lucky to grow up in Juneau with those great men to learn from.

    As an ex-trawlerman from Scotland I'm watching this video grinning from ear to ear. The excitement of every haul and the feel good factor of a decent reward for long hard days of graft come flooding back. I trust you and your crew will remain safe and well and return tired but in good spirits to your families at the end of every trip. Huge regards from Scotland.

      Thanks for taking time to respond. 2020 was the worst salmon season that I’ve ever had in 30+ years. I hope that you had a great summer despite covid’s impact on tourism.

      No problem. This is our first year doing a charter and lodging business. It was kind of a rough year to start. The king fishing here sucked but the pinks are in heavy and that's what the clients liked. Thanks for responding.

    Dose the same boat also get used for Salmon?

    • @chadwalling4139
      @chadwalling4139  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we gear this boat up for halibut fishing and then remove the halibut gear to get it ready for salmon fishing. It’s a well oiled system after twenty-five years on this boat.

      @@chadwalling4139 Neat, is it easier to catch Salmon or Halibut?

    • @chadwalling4139
      @chadwalling4139  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@matthewhaverkamp8657 They both come with their challenges. Salmon openings are 48-96 hours around the clock which is a grind. Halibut fishing you get extended breaks while your gear soaks halibut fishing. Salmon fishing has been harder on my body for sure and the extended hours around the clock for weeks on end don’t help either.

    Why don’t you guys pre bait and salt bait? Seems silly not to get those hooks baited before you start setting?

    I am a college student and Alaska has been a place I've dreamt of going to. I know Alaska offers a lot of summer jobs but I am curious if one can start off working as a deckhand with no experience and where to find these jobs.

    • @chadwalling4139
      @chadwalling4139  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. I’ve had many green horns deckhand for me over the years and it became their worst nightmare because they didn’t anticipate working that hard. Out of thirty plus years that I’ve been doing this I can count on one hand the guys I’ve hired who knew how to work long hard hours without a complaint and picked up the routine quickly. If you’re there for the experience and the hard work is an afterthought then definitely find another summer job.

      Whatever the landed price, it's minus the fuel, bait, maintenance spares, replacement hooks, line and gear, outerwear and gloves. As my dad used to say, "the boat gets her share" & the skipper and crew divide up whatever is left over. (And if there's a bank loan to be paid back when buying the boat, those bankers get first dibs).
      If the boat and crew have bad luck, like major engine damage or hydraulic system failure, or lost gear, that by itself may take a big part of whatever the buyer or fish plant is paying. Sometimes, even with the mortgage all paid off, everything on the trip has been good, so no big problems and the crew go home with money in their pockets after many days and nights of hard work.
      But sometimes - and it's almost never at a "good" time, something goes "bang" or "crunch" or "twang, boing, shriek or gurgle, glub, hiss" - not good. Occasionally there are times when everything stops and suddenly it's completely silent on deck. Also not good.
      Guys like these look after their boat and its equipment, and their gear, and repair small problems before they suddenly become large ones. With 40 years of fishing and a well equipped, clean and tidy boat with solid gear, the skipper probably knows all the places most likely to find problems. Even so, there are those unwelcome (and costly) surprises.

    People have no idea how dangerous setting that gear is. Makes me break out in cold sweat watching it. I've never been hooked setting, but got hooked pulling once and then the line popped out of the shiv and I was directly connected to the bottom of the ocean. Not fun at all.

      Yup. The circle hooks that we use today are far less scary than the J hooks that they used back in the day. I’ve heard stories of guys taking them in the face and hands as they’re snapped onto the line that’s flying out the back of the boat.
