Re, the Pearl Harbor metaphor - the person who made that "hard choice for the greater good" was the President. We choose the President in part to make choices like that, and Presidents are, at least in theory, accountable to us. No one elected Batman. It's the same reason why Batman can't kill. Society hasn't given him that authority, as it has to judges, who are, again, accountable to the people.

I got to say that Miller was right in regards to Jason Todd's death. Having hotlines for people to vote on whether a teenager lives or dies is, in hindsight, an absurdly cynical move on DC's part.

That's one of the reasons I love Brat Pack, dark and brutal as it is. The whole thing starts with a radio show jokingly having a vote as to whether the teenage sidekicks of the city's superheroes should die... only for the main villain to reveal he started the vote, murdering the teenagers and holding the whole city in some ways accountable for it.
It's a great read if you want something unflinchingly and brutally dark

    • @hitomisalazar4073
      @hitomisalazar4073 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

It's something I'm conflicted over myself. Like at the time Jason Todd was really unpopular in the fandom but a minority of writers and fans really liked Jason Todd from all I've picked up on it. The idea of throwing out the story to a bit of democracy was fair enough as I see it. You have a very contentious point and compared to things like: "Lets reboot the entire setting so we can do things like make Starfire a Sexual Goldfish" and all... well I appreciate they cared enough to actually ask before just ham fisting it. But it also had a problem of the fact that the poll got more popular than the comics at the time. With a lot of people thinking it was a poll to kill Dick Grayson, Age 12, not even knowing who Jason Todd actually was because Jason Todd never entered mainstream pop culture, or why anyone would want him gone.
Though some things in the eventual fallout of the event that were checkered. It came out with probably my favorite Robin after all, Tim Drake. But it also started the point of The Joker going all the way Murdering Psychopath Without Jokes sort of stuff...

9:45 I believe you misread the scene where the two Mutants decide not to kill Bruce Wayne because they "Can't do murders when they're into it", they didn't back off killing him because he was willing to fight back; they decided not to kill him because Bruce WANTED to die; and it took away all the fun. Bruce's pose isn't of somebody ready to deliver an ass-whupping, the way he's kneeling and his arms are folded shows he's all like, "Let it come. Just get this over with, I no longer have the will to fight back anymore.". This tracks with Bruce's character arc, during his fiery crash during the drag race in Issue#1; he says, "This would be a good death... but not good enough." By this point in the story Bruce is tired old man with a death wish who has lost all purpose in life, and by the end of Issue#4 he has found a new lease on life when he speaks the last lines in the story: "This will be a good life. Good enough."

He becomes so cynical and jaded that he effectively pushed all his allies away and was living as a grouchy old man until Terry came along. Now I do like Terry McGinnis as a character and the mentor-apprentice dynamic he shared with Bruce, it's just getting to that point that I had a problem with.
And then they revealed that Terry was Bruce's biological son and as such was always destined to be the next Batman (screw Dick I guess) and I guess that Amanda Waller counted on Terry and Bruce having a chance encounter in the future. About Batman shooting at the mutant:
Granted, you can’t see the target’s eyes, but the mouth gives the impression that the mutant is in a state of shock - aghast at the very idea that *anyone* would fire bullets near her, much less Batman with a five-round burst from a machine gun.
One of the things that Miller brought in here is the idea that, even though Batman hates guns, he *does* know how to use them and actually has fire discipline. As in, he can place a shot pretty close to the target without actually hitting it, on purpose. It’s one of the reasons why the picture of him carrying a rifle is a shock, even though it’s revealed it’s a piton gun.
Miller’s Batmobile design has also been influential on future portrayals due to its quasi-military nature (see Christopher Nolan’s Tumbler).

All art is political and all art is commercial. This is an undeniable fact of humanity. Art sells ideas, even a drawing of "Little Debbie" is trying to sell you an idea; the idea that kids will enjoy sweet treats. However, unless an artist is using their work to preach a political idea, the artist has the right to not have their work used as a political cudgel. Some art is created to be pure escapism, and if it is earnestly trying to only be that, let it be that.

It actually does make a bit of sense. When it’s hot out people are more likely to be outside and active. Meaning young people are more likely to be outside getting into trouble, criminals are more likely to burglarize homes because they’re more likely to be empty, and people are more likely to be mugged or robbed because more people are outside providing more opportunity for victims of muggings to muggers.

I don't know what Batman comic it was from but I recently found an image of Batman telling Robin (Damian Wayne) that he never thought of any of the Robins as soldiers the exact dialog is (Batman)- I NEVER made a soldier. I don't WANT to. DICK? A clearer vision of what Batman was meant to be. JASON is willing to do what Batman can't, when the world needs it. TIM has a strategic sense I envy, I've never seen him move to early. Sometimes YOU (Damian) do. But that might SAVE you someday. I WANT you to decide for YOURSELVES what you do--who you become.

24:30: Um...I know Plant God Poison Ivy didn't exist at this point, but...Clayface? Man-Bat? The Immortal Ra's Al Ghul? Killer Croc? All of those, in some way or another, are less "human" than, The Mutant Leader, an otherwise regular guy who filed his teeth.

    • @kingofthegundam7974

I think the idea is that most of those villains had something resembling humanity, like their goals are oriented on money, protecting loved ones or saving the environment, while the Mutant Leader is just an asshole who kills for no real reason.

@@kingofthegundam7974 The Syntax is ambiguous as to what exactly he's referring to, but, under your interpretation...The Joker (who...y'know...IS in this comic) is absolutely that kind of jackass, which is most of why I interpret it in the literal "we never fought the main characters of Universal Horror Movies" way. The former interpretation at least sets an idea that maybe Frank's Batman actually never DID fight those villains, as odd as that is.

My theory is a combination of 9/11 and the Myth of Redemptive Violence.
As the comment above me points out Miller was in New York on 9/11 and witnessed the towers go down. It was a very traumatizing experience for Miller and a lot of Americans. And the attitude after the 9/11 was the someone *anyone* had to pay for this. Which is where the myth of Redemptive Violence comes in.
The Myth of Redemptive Violence is a story archetype through which essentially through violence a person or people are vindicated and injustice is set right. It is the belief that violence is the **only** appropriate response to violence. Essentially might makes right and turnabout is fair play.
And this idea is EVERYWHERE in American Media. From Cop Shows, Westerns, to Super Hero stories the idea that through violence you can rectify an injustice is all but baked into the genre. And there’s no shortage of people who think the solution to all of the United State’s problems is violence.
And this attitude can very easily lead into fascisms. Because fascism also proposes that violence both internal external is the only solution to a country’s problems. Americans felt humiliated, afraid, insecure because of 9/11 and Fascists gave them someone to blame for that humiliation: Muslims. And gave them a tool to correct those feelings: violence. This is why hate crimes against Muslims, Arabs, and people perceived as being apart of these groups spiked after 9/11. And why we invaded Iraq and killed half a million to a million innocent civilians. Someone had to pay, and the country didn’t care who.
And the worst thing is, if you went back to 2003 with evidence Iraq didn’t have WMD I don’t think that would have stopped the war. The false accusations that Iraq had WMDs was nothing more than the Pretext for the war. The Cause of the War was Americans desiring revenge for 9/11.
So that’s my two cents on why Frank Miller went Fash.
