    I didn't apply to this position but I do think that people deserve a response. I understand the amount of fake applications(rick rolls and such), that unfortunately comes from having such a public presence and very public recruitment video. But those who seriously applied took at least 1 or even 2 days to properly present themselves, fill out the application and tailor a demo reel to fit corridors interest. Some people probably even made a new piece of work just for you, I know I have for some jobs in the past. I'm an animator for animated productions and VFX films and I do find it a bit rude when studio's don't bother sending a basic rejection letter, especially for the applicants who you imagine as potential hires in the future.
    A discreet automated email chain with: " Thank you for taking the time to send us your application, but unfortunately, it's not exactly what we are looking for at the moment." Is all you need

  • @AndrewBreen92
    @AndrewBreen92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    If you're getting that many applicants for openings, it's worth looking at using a recruiting tool to help manage the applications and helping automate some of the steps (e.g. on submission, on rejection etc.)

    I think a response for rejection, even if a copy and pasted msg, or a few words, means alot. Granted its alot of emails to send, but i think it means alot to the people who might be biting nails for ages wondering what happened, if their email even went through, to possibly not get a definate answer to their anxiety if they miss this podcast for a long time. Certainly a rejection letter to those top 30/40 applicants I would personally consider a good idea, and good courtesy.

    Personally, getting response like "sorry looser, you don´t have a chance" is still better than nothing at all. Because I apply for one job that I´m interested in. I don´t blast my resume everywhere and see what sticks. So it´s better to know in a week that you didn´t get it than not knowing for four. But I would´t blame you and take it personally. It´s just nice to know. Also sometimes you can ask why did´t like you and if they´re willing to answer, you know what to work on.

    Keep up the good and interesting work!
    A little recommendation for VFX artist reacts:
    Maybe do one on sound design. Most VFX relies heavily on that. Most interesting would be something like spells in Harry Potter. Where Foley artists had to imagine sounds from scratch. Maybe you can watch scenes without sound and try to guess the sounds or something. :)

    I would say try to be better than a dead-inside Fortune 500 company and send out a copy-paste response to rejected applicants. Shows you care even a bit. Sometimes it's heart-breaking not hearing back and I would count applying to Corridor as one such case. It's not that much trouble to do a mailing list/BCC email.
    Currently looking for a job myself after getting canned from 17-year career and I can barely even apply due to fear of rejection. Not that I even know what I wanna do, except NOT what I did before. That's kinda next level bullshit.

    "Funny" fact, I'm from Argentina, I live in a middle of the patagonic desert and the people here fight weekly to avoid any mineral explotation, specially because we don't have water NOW. There is only one river crossing which is each year smaller, we are in water emergency because this same river come from the mountains, from a snow that don't fall due the climate change (and we are still in winter) so this summer will be HARD. We have one of the biggest wind mills fields, electricity which is sold to who knows. China is trying their hardest to exploid this same mountains which bring water to mostly all country. The sandstorms are each summer bigger. So is not a thing to the next generation, we are suffering that now. The change MUST happen. But sadly we can't do much more.

    I don't know anything about vfx, but I know people put time in their submission. At least send them a copy-past email back they didn't make it past the first selection. You guys ask hundreds of people to send something and they were all hoping to make it. Replying to them it part of the process and shows respect to your viewers. Replying with a copy past will only take 30 seconds and probably less. I mean what is 30 seconds for 1 person. Some of them put hours in their submission. It would take you a day with 500 emails, but probably less.

    • @LanceMabu
      @LanceMabu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trains must be in the 10000s of kWh and a standard sized solar panel is 100 W so probably not. Maybe it could work on smaller shuttle trains but freight trains are unfeasible.

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hydrogen might be a better alternative to solar for trains. They're simply too heavy and don't have enough area for the amount of solar panels that would be needed. one way i saw depending on where you live and the type of HVAC system you have is to over cool or over heat your house at night and raise it to a higher temp thats bearable during the day this is also heavily reliant on the state of your house it needs to be air tight and well insulated this will significantly reduce your electrical bill as you wont be using that power during peak hours leading to less overall grid use if you get a large enough group of people doing it which will lead to less brown outs. My problem with the electrical vehicles is that while they may be catching up to standard combustion engines i don't think the grid in the US right now would be able to sustain a majority use of them not until we move to a predominately nuclear powered nation we'll be using the fuel that would've went into a car or truck back into the grid to charge the large quantity of electric vehicles that we would be supporting until we find a magic fuel that is 100% efficient we will be stuck with this right now as current tech stand solar and wind arent sustainable for mass use scenarios maybe as backups its plausible nuclear is our best bet the waste produced by the reactors is negligible and the spent uranium can be used in other things the water vapor they give off isnt toxic or radio active the horror stories that surround them is in actuality rare and few between

    • @SirWrender

      ok where do I begin lol. First, actually we can transition to 100% electric vehicles right now without killing the electric grid. It wouldn't be ideal, but it COULD handle it. the idea that it can't is a myth since the grid is designed to handle the highest load on the worst day of the worst year. It spends most of its time WAY under that. Now, if that were to ACTUALLY happen quick changes would need to happen to make the grid sustainable, sure, but that's not my point. A fleet of semi-trucks plugging in overnight... yeah THAT might be a problem.
      But Solar absolutely IS sustainable for mass use. Nuclear is fine, not knocking that, but from a first principles logic stand point it's not as good as solar.

      @@SirWrender from what I was able to find from the little searching and videos I've watched I've seen that most of our power is produced in a reactionary need rather then producing more then what we need im not down playing all the research you did and I'm very much looking forward to your video just from what little I know from looking around and reading on the internet it doesn't seem like we're at a point in technology that we would be able to make solar a stable source of power without destroying swaths of land for the parts needed to make everything that goes into making and maintaining them let alone storing the energy they would be making

    Wren, if you haven't watched Physics Girl's new series, you should. She talks about some of these issues; especially, the latest one where she talks about lithium-ion batteries and how there are better ways to store electricity.

      Oh I definitely have haha. Not gonna lie, I’ve been a hydrogen skeptic for a long time but her videos changed my mind. I realized my thinking was too short sighted and not “simple” enough.
      The technology is definitely not there yet. Not even close. The efficiency is bad and the massive amount of energy to make it work will put Bitcoin to shame.
      But what about a future where there’s just simply SO MUCH renewable energy that electrolysis costs nothing and the infrastructure is mainstream? Hydrogen as energy storage suddenly starts looking very compelling. This basic understanding blew my mind.

    Hey Wren! I had a question. I heard from a friend that while electric cars are greener their batteries can be terrible for the environment when disposed of. And can in fact be worse than gas pollution. You mentioned lithium-ion batteries towards the end of the podcast, but I was just curious for further information on this. Thanks!

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gas pollution and disposing of batteries are two entirely different things so it's not right to compare. Disposal and physical pollution is a huge problem but I think comes secondary to the greenhouse gas emissions problem, since that affects us more directly and is more eminent.
      Also, the idea behind lithium ion batteries is that they're in theory 100% recyclable so shouldn't be disposed of at all. Unfortunately, technology isn't all the way there yet to make that a reality. But that fails to take into account the secondary life electric car batteries can have by being taken out and used as grid storage or in houses. THAT already happens a lot and is getting more prevalent and goes a very long way towards making the batteries more eco-friendly.

    I am from Argentina b😂 there is lithum in the north of the country but i think bolivia has the biggest reserve or lithum and chile is the one country in the region that it actually using them. The problem with lithum is that it isn't that great fron a business perspective extracting it because it needs a lot of water and the mines are usually in deserts also they don't pay that much for it. Lithum is very resource intensive and for a commodity that's not good. I was actually surprised how little money the mines made. Mines are usually really Unpopular here because most of the wealth extracted doesn't impact the community at all and they poison the water supply. Lithum is really easy to recycle so making massive investments doesn't make that much sense.
    It doesn't help that there are probably more electric cars in your average Californian neighborhood than in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia put together. So it isn't something people in the region use that much outside of Celphones and laptops.

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah exactly. It’s like… that’s definitely a problem worth taking into account. Fortunately as the economics for lithium scale up, new extraction methods will be developed. Hopefully they’re less water intensive.

    • @victoriap1561
      @victoriap1561 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SirWrender i really hope so but i don't really see a way for it not being resource heavy in one way or another it may not use that much water but it will need something else.
      it really annoys me seeing people saying stuff like " it's a prize worth paying" or something when they aren't the ones suffering the consequences, most of the people that will suffer are the native people that live there that didn't cause global warming.

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@victoriap1561 That's totally fair. I'm not in Argentina and am not seeing the effects first hand. For that alone it's not right for me to say "prize worth paying". However, I think my point was more along the lines of posing that question to begin with.
      Also, the extraction methods used in your country today are outdated. Tesla has already started pursuing extracting lithium locally in Nevada. I'm not exactly sure how they're gonna do it but they seem confident about it. Hopefully in the near future things will get better around lithium mining.

    • @victoriap1561
      @victoriap1561 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SirWrender i wasn't talking about you there, sorry for the confusion . It was people commenting on articles about this issue. They always say the same thing.
      As for the process i have seen that there are new technologies but they are very very new. I am a chemical engineer and industrial process tend to be very conservative when it comes to stuff like that. Half of the lithum in the market comes from salars and seems to use evaporation for what i have read. In Nevada they want to extract from clay but it seems to be a pilot plant at the moment. The evaporation process is very straightforward and they might use geothermal to aid evaporation but I highly doubt any of the alternatives will be as cheap.
      Australia uses lithum ore that's even worse for the environment and more costly though more convenient for the intermediary component that is currently used in batteries.

    speaking to what we as humans were meant to experience, as a species, we were given intelligence to tend to each other, the planet, and the life that's on it, we're on a titanic sized ship, headed for a titanic sized iceberg, and the most frustrating thing is that we could not only maneuver past all this tribalism (for lack of a better word, but tribalism should really mean that we are one as a tribe), the only results that we as a species is what we see now. We were endowed with all the gifts that we need as a species to make life more incredible than what we are experiencing, by creating and continuing to allow concepts like money control us, we rob ourselves of our true capabilities and hold ourselves back as a species. We are here to have each other's back not to act like crabs in a pot. So, I agree with Jake, and I feel it's up to us to correct the course. Imagine, a world filled with people who tackle on life's challenges and are built to evolve ourselves as a species and accomplish things that we previously thought impossible. Despite what we've been led to believe, we're all the same, and were all built with the same purpose. To look after one another and grow as a species. So odd that people keep opting for the opposite. I know, a lil deep for a VFX podcast, but that's why i dig you guys. You remind me that humans are still capable of our true purpose. Thank you all for helping me grow as a bother.
