So happy to see appreciation for Simon and Garfunkel! The original and the BEST! You would really enjoy their classic song "Bridge Over Troubled Water." God bless.
nothing beats this. but know this: here, they are covering themselves because their own original was 1964 (!!!), fourtyfive years BEFORE this one 2009, and it was different. but you did choose the best version, anyway. you should definitely look up BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER from the same concert.
My grandad Mike loved Simon & Garfunkel, they were one of his favourite bands! He died 3 years ago and this song brings back memories of when he was still with us! You will be missed but never forgotten Grandad Mike, rest in peace and PEACE AND LOVE!!!☮️♥️
This was their reunion after 30 years apart, so it doesn’t compare to their studio version, where the harmonies were perfection. Please listen to the studio version, you won’t be disappointed!
This performance of their 1964 song was bone-chilling to me. To hear how the old harmonies changed and deepened as their voices aged but were no less effecting--even more so. Brilliant performance. I agree with you Xavier. Brilliant harmonies. Brilliant performance.
Gonna be honest, their voices here are not aged, they're weathered. Just adding to the emotion and chilling sorrowful feeling of the song even more. Still sound amazing.
You young people have missed so much good music that we experienced in the 60s and 70s. So good though that you can go into the back catalogues and enjoy this music as we did and still do. Simon and Garfunkle the masters of two part harmony and beautiful songs. Hope you react to some more!
@@danlostl I agree The Everleys were a major influence on S &G and bands like The Beatles as well. I went to one of S &G’s last concerts together and they had The Everleys on as guests . They all sung together as well. What a treat!
In 1965 I heard this song for the first time. I was a Simon and Garfunkel fan from then on. The beauty of their harmonies and the lyrics of their songs were truly wonderful.
Always great to see the younger generation appreciating the things that came before them. To be fair, this song was also before my time - I didn't discover it until adulthood myself, but Art Garfunkel has the voice of an absolute Angel. Paul Simon was the bigger star, but goodness, could Art Garfunkel sing.
Paul Simon went to become one of American's greatest and original songwriters. Simon first met Garfunkel at school in Queens, New York when they were both 10 years old.
Paul Simon is one of the greatest storytellers of my generation. You add Garfunkel's voice, and it was magic! Their performance now is just as powerful as it was in my day. Your reaction was great! I really appreciated a new generation's take on the music that shaped our lives! Thank you!
wow, This is decades after their original recording of the song, but the magic is still here. Beautiful. Garfunkel's delicate, ethereal tone with Simon's bit more solid sound just still expresses Simon's song better than anyone else can do, no matter how strikingly powerful Disturbed's take on it is. And I like disturbed's version very much, but this one by the original artists takes the prize.
The song is so good that almost any cover sounds amazing. But the simple fact is that no other artist can reproduce the simple sound of Simon and Garfunkel.
Paul Simon: one of the best folk songwriters of all time. And their sound was close enough to rock that it had an edge to it without saturated guitars or thundering drum beats. Those guys were brilliant. Never seen this performance of it, but glad I did. Thank you for posting this.
Deanna, I hear you --- the years fly by and memory fades --- it's likely even worse for those Hippies who lived through that era and who liberally sampled it's substances --- you know the old saying --- "If you remember the 60's, then you weren't there".
Thank you for listening to the OGs. I love all the covers, but Simon and Garfunkel have had a special place in my heart since I was a kid. Seeing them live was a highlight of my life. ❤
This is from the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance. Years and years after they first recorded/released this song. They sound this good well after their prime. Best harmonies ever.
They were named “ Poet Laureates” of that time. They wrote some great songs others cover still . I’m elated you “got it”. To understand songs from this era in the U.S so many movements were going on simultaneously and it’s all recorded in our songs. There was a great deal going on all over ver the world . It was tumultuous and we young people used music to express our desires for change which spurred our actions . How we felt , what we needed those in power to know and what our dreams were . It was an important time in history and we are seeing it again .
The disturbed cover was the only cover that Paul Simon not only liked but shared on his social media. He said that the lead singer for disturbed was born to sing it that way. And that the original version was a warning and the disturbed version was a rage at a warning unheeded. I am so glad that you enjoyed both versions, but I am especially glad that you liked this one better. That is just awesome! 💙💙💙
1 million, yes 1 million people poured into Central Park in New York to hear them in concert, I have read testimonials from people who were there that when they started that song you could not hear a pin drop such was the power of their performance
If you ever want to check out more from these two look for their other songs like, "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "The Boxer", "I Am A Rock", "Mrs. Robinson", and others.
This is one of my favorite all-time songs and I'm old enough to remember when it was new. I would love to see your reaction to The Boxer and Bridge Over Troubled Water. In most cases I prefer the studio version but I was amazed at how good this version was and I have seen the concert they did in Central Park in about 1984 which is also great. It's too bad they couldn't get along and stay together because they put out some incredible music.
I know they were not thinking of this when Simon wrote this song, but to me, when he says "people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening" I think of texting, IM. email.
You *still* have *not* heard the original!!! The studio version from the 1960s is beyond moving. They changed this one up to offer something different for the long-time fans, but it doesn't do them justice for a first-time listener. Please react to that version ❤️
You are a very smart and perceptive young man,you hit the nail on the head, a cover is a cover and especially in this instance no cover can convey the feeling of the original artist brilliantly written, brilliantly sung.
The original was straight acoustic on the album Wednesday morning 3 am. It didn’t sell well so the producer brought in the Columbia studio band to add in electric instruments, perfectly. The results were a big hit and it’s in the sounds of silence album.
You should give a listen to the studio version that was released in '64. This live version is arguably better, but keep in mind most of us only had the '64 version to listen to until they got back together to do it live. Definitely worth a listen.
Simon and Garfunkel wrote and sang some of the best music in the 60's and 70's.. way ahead of their time. I rank them up there with Lennon and McCartney for song writing and singing.
Agree... Should start from original. How the public first received it... Then first live version. Then newer ones. Like folks said, this is decades after the original release... Research recommended... Keep up the good work
I humbly suggest that you seek out their song "American Tune" from their concert in Central Park. You will like the harmonies and the message. And everyone is right about "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Take a few minutes and feel your brain sparkle.
I love the quiet intensity of the way Garfunkel sings….legend

Simon an incredible song writer, Garfunkul with the voice of an angel. Together the most amazing harmony.

They spoke to any entire generation and are New Yorkers through and through.

man I miss the music from back then. When the words were so powerful it brought tears to your eyes.
Have loved this song all my life and will right to the end Paul Simon is the greatest song writer of all-time

They changed a word here and there too - which of course they may do!
Doesn’t get better than that.....except the Central Park version when they were young.
Gonna have to check that out
Oh they were NOT young then at Central Park...they've been doing their thing since the '60's.
Paul Simon wrote this at 17 years old. A masterpiece.
They weren't young in the concert at central park. It was 1981.
Scott Schoenkopf ye but they wasn’t that old ither

And God said, "let there be 2-part harmony" and behold, there was Simon and Garfunkel.
The Disturbed version might as well have been a different song. But... I was perfect for The Blacklist scene that it was used for.
I feel so lucky to have been alive in the heyday of this music.

Dark but beautiful!
"The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence"
