@Sir Hairless, Honestly David sounds so much more incredible when he did it live on the Conan O'Brian show 👏 ...I will tell you more about that performance if you do it 🙏. Even though the video is incredible, the recorded version is just not as good as the live. Funny enough, David hated that performance, yet we ALL LOVE it so much more!❤ David was classically trained, so yes he has an amazing voice, but yes very recognizable to him alone. Simon and Garfunkel was the warning, David's is the anger of the warning ignored 😢
When Paul Simon heard David’s version of this song, he said “this is Disturbed’s song now”. I can’t think of higher praise than that. This version brings me to tears every time I hear it. Thank you very much for your excellent breakdown! BTW, David said in an interview that after they recorded this, he was so overcome with emotion that he went behind the studio and cried. Beautiful.
@SargonnasIncarnate It's not hard to believe. With all _very_ due respect to S & G, I don't think their version (as excellent as it is) has a billion views and Heaven knows how many downloads! I'm not saying one is better than the other, mind you, just using a tool for measuring.
i dont know where i read that comment but i like it: the simon and garfunkel version was a warning, the disturbed version was the anger of the warning being ignored.
I've thought of it as Simon and Garfunkel's being the sorrow, Disturbed's being the anger, and Geoff being the hope. And Peyton Parish... being the pre-boss-fight music XD
@Drake844221 ROFL, I haven't hear Peyton's yet, I'll have to check it out! "Boss fight" seems to suit his music though! All I'll add is that parts of Geoff's video could also be a hair product commercial. My oh my, he is a fine looking fellow! Hair envy is a real thing!😉
I'm 73 and when I first heard this, maybe 5 years ago, I was stunned and obsessed. I still can't listen to this one without crying. To me, the original was a standard of my youth. It was still hopeful; a warning, but hopeful. David Draiman sang this angrily, a demand that we pay attention: armageddon is here. And now Geoff Castellucci has his version, which - to me - is acknowledgment and sadness. All 3 are glorious and completely different. Thank you for doing this. I'm in awe of Draiman's power and ability to convey nuance and emotion here.
David has cantor training. Disturbed is one of those bands where they can truly be metal, but also has a wonderful softer side. They have many original songs, but love adding in a cover song to their albums. This rendition still brings me to tears. Love your reaction per usual.
@M0rket I've seen him sing this song live. If there's pitch correction added, I couldn't tell. Although I know on Conan, it was pitch corrected as David had a high fever that night.
I grew up with the original and have held it dear, however, this version brings me to tears. David and his band have created a masterpiece and paid an incredible homage to this song.
You can tell he was ill though as the high notes were not as pure and he had to use fry to get to the highest note. But impressive that he did it live dispute being sick. And having a timpani behind him.
It's also autotuned. The studio version is pitch corrected, which is like a mini-autotune, but is definitely less painful to listen to. Wings of Pegasus did an in depth breakdown of it. There's several un-edited live versions floating around, mostly from concert footage from the crowd.
@@debiw8599 It's not just autotuned. It's so absurdly autotuned that it resembles stuff that is intentionally over-autotuned because they want to create an artificial robotic sound.
I don't love the live version. He wax sick and it shows. The visuals in this are stunning and tell such a story, but his face is fabulous, no movement, no theatrics just expressions. Fantastic.
Highly recommend the PTX-version! Someone described the "original as a warning, Disturbed as anger that warning wasn't listened to and PTX as a warning with hope"... Anyway, this song is magic ✨ Love your reaction!
Sir Hairless, every time I watch your reactions/analyses, I'm deeply moved by how beautifully you weave sharing your musical knowledge (super instructive for me) and your emotional reaction (touching me to the toes). You're exceptional, thank you for sharing your knowledge and beauty with the world!
I'm not a huge metal fan, but David Draimon is an exception. His voice is so versatile, he can sing just about anything. He and Elizabeth Zharroff sat for an interview and he was amazing ... open, educational, etc. A great human being.
David Draiman has classical training and you can hear that. I would suggest to listen to one of their most famous songs "Down with the sickness", to get a grasp on what their style of Metal is. Greets from Germany!
This is the last time I listen to “everybody.” LOL. “Everybody” said this was a really creepy version so I kind of kept skipping it but I decided to watch your reaction. I LOVE this guy’s voice. The visuals are stark and (I guess) maybe creepy, but not at all what I expected. The grit at the end worked-he wasn’t just screaming/snarling the whole song out, and he has a really rich, obviously well-trained voice. Loved this reaction, and thanks for the intro to this group!
Always worth the risk checking out things you might otherwise not check out! Worst that can happen is you don't like it and stop watching after a short while. Best that can happen... well, there are a lot of good things 😅
@@SirHairless Usually true, but for whatever reason, I’m prone to earworms and will often hear a song tumbling through my brain off and on for days. I’m just not that into most metal (there are some exceptions), so I try to avoid having the cacophony in my head if I can avoid. It’s not just metal. I absolutely love Queen, but every stinking time I hear Fat Bottom Girls I won’t be able to get rid of it for days. Not a bad song, but as an earworm it drives me nuts. OTOH it can be nice to have this kind of auditory recall, as I don’t need any devices if I want to “hear” music.
I will never forget the powerful effect David's voice had on me when I first heard this version. You can only hear a song for the first time once but the shivers travel up my back every time I hear it. It's the anger against the silence, the oppression that moves me. I am glad you have heard it. Thank you.
That raspy distortion Draiman introduces in the final third of the song isn't coming from his vocal chords - he's letting the soft tissues & cartilage above his vocal chords provide that texture on top of the note produced by his vocal folds. My understanding is that Draiman learned how to control his breath support and vocal tone in cantorial school, so he has a lot of precision with his vocal fry such that it sounds good instead of ugly. I am struck by the careful way he softens his consonants, allowing him to record his audio with his mouth almost touching the microphone without popping. This approach allows him to present intimate vocals as if he's singing right in your ear. His live performance on Conan is worth listening to as well, since you can watch him work the microphone (and you can hear how he sings through a cold).
This song was the first I heard of Disturbed and loved it. When I went searching for other Disturbed songs I listened to Down With The Sickness and was shocked!!! I looked them up and found they were a heavy metal band. After listening to more of it decided I loved their music. I never listened to heavy metal before so I'm glad they I was introduced to it by The Sound of Silence.
Its been mentioned in comments on multiple reactions and down below as well, but not all in one, and the most popular versions of this song (that I've heard) and the feelings behind them: Original: The Warning Disturbed: The Anger when that warning was ignored Geoff: The sorrow felt from the warning being ignored Pentatonix: The hopefulness that all might not be lost (Kind of spoilery for last 2, but since it was already mentioned in comments i thought I'll put it as a single whole comment, since I agree with this)
What a nice surprise!😃You absolutely nailed this analysis, Sir Hairless! Your interpretation and explanations were so interesting and well-crafted that I felt like I could almost fully understand all the technical language/symbols on the musical concepts you discussed - you’re truly outstanding!👌Just like the original song, I really like this version of ‘The sound of silence’ (both the studio recording and the Conan live performance), and I think Disturbed earned a well-deserved respect for taking the huge risk of creating a metal-influenced interpretation of this monumental and meaningful folk-rock classic. I guess the result speaks for itself: this cover filled with some good dose of sorrow/angst seems to please many people from a wide range of “music tribes”. In my case, even though I’m a big fan of some types of metal songs, Disturbed has never been one of the bands I choose to listen when I want to get my fill of heavy metal; however, this amazing cover allowed me to fully appreciate David Draiman’s vocal abilities. It’s fascinating when we’re exposed to new experiences that can help us to change our minds about certain types of music/bands/singers/etc., and I’m very happy that you decided to venture into the metal(ish) territory again - thank you very much for this great video, Sir! P.S. 1: I’m going to show this video to a couple of 'metal' friends who will likely love your analysis as well :) P.S. 2: If I had the right to say something about the matter, I’d vote ‘nope’ to the idea of having massive piercings in SH’s chin... P.S. 3: That low note you pulled out of your sleeves twice in the video was something I’ve never heard before from you - you have an impressive vocal range, Sir!😊
I saw Disturbed in concert a few months ago. The pyrotechnics on stage were stunning but they took a seat to his vocals. He has one of the best hard rock voices.
I love both the original and this cover. I like the "anger" as if he were angry to us people not having listened to the previous Simon and Garfunkel's warning : It becomes now more urgent to act but maybe it's too late. Thank you for your precious information on the instrumental parts : I will pay more attention to them now. Take care 🙏🏻🇫🇷
I like this cover IMMEASURABLY more than the original --- to me the essence is SO much brought into a relief......! his interpretation so much more ...fitting to me..... , much more complexity................... aaaaaaah, and his voice....🌹🥰
Thank you. This is so incredibly powerful! My understanding is that the lead singer is actually classically trained! His delivery is haunting and totally mesmerizes me. This is stunning and impactful. I've been waiting to see you react to this and to hear your thoughts and observations. Yes, 'epic'!
I love the original, but I like this epic rock version just as much. David's voice is very pleasant, but his increasingly haunting singing reinforces the message of the song much more and has a lasting impact on me.
Wow! I had never heard of Disturbed! Amazing really how the song is the same but totally different! Very powerful cover and stirring performance! Eye and ear opening analysis Sir H, incredible stuff! Thank you! 🎸 🎹 🎤 🎶 🖤👌🙏
What a time to be a metal head in though, going from generations of prejudices about how metal is, what it supposedly represents and how people listening to it presumably acts. When in fact, metal heads are just human beings with emotions and means to express themselves in another way than "usual". Seeing people finding out that metal music is complex and actually not that bad - is so nice! It's great even... thank you for another good video, Sir! 🖤
First time I heard this was when a friend played it on the radio during a day trip. I was shocked, speechless, and he got me!!! I played it for weeks or months. It is on my playlist. I’m not a metal fan but I also found the interviews, etc because I was entranced. After hundreds of listens, the goosebumps, chills appear. Wonderful reaction, as always. ❤❤❤ Heading to Patreon.
I'm so glad you reacted to this. I've been waiting. I was a child when the original came out, and I remember being angry when I first heard it. I felt that soft, harmonious version was still an apocalyptic warning, and when I would sing it - which I did a lot - my version would also be loud and angry as it built toward the end. I think David's vision of this song links into the feelings the lyrics hold tight in other versions. I've watched a lot of reactions to this trying to discover some of the secrets as to why this version is so powerful and I knew you would help me with your analysis. Thank you!
I've loved this song since it came out-it's my cell ringtone. This is my first time seeing you review someone besides Dimash. Since I'm a subscriber of yours it came up so since I love the song, I thought I'd watch your reaction. You gave a great review. I'm not crazy over most of their songs but I really love the way they did this one. Thanks
Well you’ve made my day! I so glad that you have chosen this one to do reaction and analysis of. It’s something that seems to get to everyone. I hope you felt it too. Thank you 🌈
Oh fantastic, you came to this! Thank you! I refused to watch this cover for years because I always loved singing the original and was afraid... But then it touched me so deeply, it still brings me to tears. It is completely different atmosphere, incredible singing, and amazing pictures and illustrations they created to the lyrics... Love your analysis, thank you, until next time! ❤️
Having heard this performance several times, I looked forward to your reaction when David's power came through. You got it. Incredible performance along with a beautiful video. Thank you for sharing this with us.
So happy you did this! I also stumbled across this a few years ago, and it's my favorite after PTX. Althought Peter Hollens and Tim Foust's version is now right up there for me after you reacted to them. Forestella also has a great version of this - hope you do a reaction to it too! Wow...this is the first time I've seen the official video. What I saw was the Conan performance which others have mentioned (and which I hope you'll react to some day!). It brought me to tears. Also goosebumpes. I go back to it every time I hear another version of Sound of Silence because it's so good. I agree with everything you said about the video. I loved it. Eerie as you said, but also so evocative!
One of my favorite things of your reactions, besides your in depth info you give us, is your facial expressions. You see exactly how you feel on your face. Absolutely love it!
I LOVE this! This song and the vocals from David Draiman were beautiful. The first time I heard this, I cried! Excellent reaction and analysis. Thank you!
Hi!!!
Growing up listening to Paul Simon's version, it was written as a warning but he and Art Garfunkel displayed such harmony that the meaning to the song was lost. David using his voice brought more meaning to Paul's intentions to me. Truly a stunning remake.
Agree! I absolutely love this version but my Disturbed playlist that I listen to during work doesn't include it because depending on my mood I'll either end up in tears or just completely away with the faeries lost in it...
There is no such thing as ‘too long’ with your videos. I could and would watch an hour-long video. It's so interesting to listen to. I have no technical knowledge, I just feel the music. With goosebumps and tears and all the shebang. I'm more of a melody girl than a lyrics girl, probably because English is not my first language, and I often don't immediately understand the intention and deeper meaning behind some lyrics. So I focus a lot on the melodies, the rhythms, the instruments ... and once I've internalised all that, I can concentrate on the lyrics. 😂 And your knowledge contributes so much to my understanding of songs. I know I write this every time, but what you say is incredibly interesting to me. I look forward to every video today. I hope it makes sense somehow. Have a great weekend. ☀️
Thank you so much! And oh I completely understand that - English is my first language and I still always focus on the music first 😅 Can't help it, just how the body reacts to music!
Damn, man. You explain everything so well. I'm afraid to show my girlfriend this here video, because you're a truly handsome man as well as being articulate AND a musician. Life for some just isn't fair. 🤐 Hoping you're an awful handyman, but I guess you master that quality, too.
This is the song that brought me back to rock/metal after a hiatus of over 50 years. I quit listening when Joplin and Hendrix died in the same year, so close together. A couple of years ago, a friend was insistent that I listen to this version. I did, simply because that's what you do for good friends. And, I was blown away. I started listening to everything I could find by Disturbed and bands performing in the same style. My exploring has lead to so much great music and I have listened to genres and styles that I never thought I would be interested in. I finally found a home in Nightwish and symphonic metal, but I am always willing and eager to listen to other genres of music. Some I like, some I dont, but you never know unless you try, do you?
Hey Gaye! I never knew, that this was the song, that brought you back to listening to music. Imagine you didn't do it, we would have never known each other. What a sad thing that would have been. Love you! 😘
Hello Sir. Sou uma das milhões de pessoas que amam essa música de forma muito especial . Essa versão de Disturbed é simplesmente fantástica e foi incrível ter você reagindo à ela, em mais um incrível trabalho. Obrigada Sir. Beijos do Brasil 😘😘😘❤️❤️❤️🇧🇷
Another Great Reaction. There are 2 more covers of The Sound of Silence that you need to react to -- Pentatonix and Geoff Castilucci's covers. Simon & Garfunkle - a polite warning Disturbed - angry because you did not heed the warning Pentatonix - at the funeral Geoff Castilucci - the wake following the funeral.
Дорогой Sir Hairless! Большое Вам спасибо! Ваша реакция/анализ как всегда превосходны! На сто тысяч лайков! Может больше?! ❤ С Вами слушать "The Sound of silence" одно удовольствие! Браво Маэстро! 👏👏👏
So glad you finally did this analysis! Simon and Garfunkel have some beautiful songs that always make great covers too. (Like Hazy Shade of Winter by Gerard Way) This "Sound Of Silence" is the best cover of that song that I have ever heard. Goosebumps every time! The first times I‘ve listened to this it made me cry. David Draiman‘s voice is epic and that build up! 🫠🥰 How wonderful to get one of your breakdowns for that song. And you seem to like it too. 👍😊❤
O yes!! Was waiting for this. Yes they are massive. I don't really listen to metal but there are exceptions like this masterpiece. Also absolutely amazing is Amazing Grace by Dan Vasc. Most people will fry their vocal cords with that. Thank you to the person requested this. Tx for your analysis as always absolutely great as always. You are so appreciated. Greetings from South Africa
Genesis, actually. The video was the first with puppets/Muppets things. I think that was the distinction. It was very strange! Lol The Disturbed version is, of course, excellent. I appreciate the modernization of the lyrics, too.
In my Patreon version where I watch a couple of interviews with David, he mentions other covers they've done and Land of Confusion was one he mentioned - that was the only one I don't know! It's now on my list for the future 👍🏽
I was a huge fan of Simon & Garfunkel back in the 60's and 70's, and loved this song from them. When I first heard the Disturbed cover several years ago, it was stunning, and I absolutely loved it! I think it captures the darkness of the lyrics better than any version I've heard. The powerful dynamics of David Draiman's voice are indeed goosebump-inducing. You might also like the Pentatonix cover of it from a few years ago (a year or so after hearing the Disturbed version), and also love it, for very different reasons... the harmonies are amazing, as you might expect. A very different "feel" from both the S&G original and this powerful Disturbed cover.
Be warned. I am 100% sure I've seen this song (both this cover and the live one) so many times that it's in the triple digits, and I still get goosebumps _every damn time_ and I love it! I know I'm not alone. I've never been into Heavy Metal much. But Disturbed is different. My first experience with them was a friend showing their video cover of "Land of Confusion." I was surprised at how much I liked it. Then when I had a long commute to work, the radio station played their songs "Down With The Sickness" and "10,000 Fists." I was surprised at how much I liked them too, but there's just something about Draiman's voice. It sounds intense, not harsh or rough! So I bought an album, and now that I have Spotify, have them on my playlists. They are my favorite metal band, and I'm getting into Peyton Parrish too (he does some crazy Disney metal covers!)! Even if you're not normally a fan of metal, I think Draiman and Disturbed can make you a convert!💙
I love your analysis of this song. I'm 60 and loved the original. Loved the Tim Foust colab as well. I wish the teachers I had in HS for voice, guitar and woodwinds had your knowledge and way of conveying concepts and details, I may have continued my musical education. Never been a fan of Metal but I truly love this by Disturbed.
Good and insightful analysis, pointing out things I haven't seen in any other reaction, thank you! Most just go: wow, that voice and singing skill - which is appropriate, but it's nice to hear commentary about other aspects of the music.
I was a little reluctant to watch this cover the first time. I was very glad I did, though. It’s a very powerful cover. I was really surprised how much I liked it. I had wondered what Disturbed could do with it since I knew they’re a heavy metal group. I was very pleasantly surprised how much I really liked it. It’s very moving. David has quite a range. The video is very dramatic and fitting for the song. Sir, you have quite a range, too. I heard that low note, and I’ve heard you sing some pretty high notes, too. Wish we could hear a song from you.
Hey SH! Hello! 👋🏻 I knew this would get to you, when it came out it got to us all and, for me, continues to get to me. I know many have suggested the live version of Conan here on YT? You will see the instruments and seeing them makes it cool? What you won’t know is David was sick, running a fever, agreed to go live as long as the show stayed out of it and did not turn on autotune, that it would be what it turned out to be. Welllllll, yeah, they turned on autotune and if you watch David you can see the second he realizes this and he is NOT happy. In the middle of the live performance. Boss move, IMO! As a side note, more merch ideas went in my notes list that I am keeping for when you are ready for merch? They might need work but here they are as follows for this video: A bar is a measure Play responsibly! Or Bars are measures Count yours wisely! 🤷🏼♀️ As always my infamous 🤔 complementary closing….. Thanks SH! T ✌🏻
Simon& Garfunkel's original was a lot too happy for my gusto 🙈 And I was so glad, that Disturbed brought out this version ❤ David has a great voice 👍🏻 Then Geoff Castellucci's version came out and it is sooo sad, it gets me crying every time 😢 Somebody in Geoff's comments explained it so good... 1. Simon&Garfunkel --> the warning 2. Disturbed --> the anger that nobody is listening 3. Geoff Castellucci --> sadness that nobody listened Disturbed and Geoff share the first place for me personally, very much depending on my daily mood ❤
@camillep3631 oh, I didn't know they did a cover of this too 👀 Thanks for pointing it out, will give it a listen 👍🏻 Maybe then I'll have the 3 of them on the first place 🤣🫣🙈
Interesting that you choose this song now. The way I relate to this song, the build up of anger is totally understandable. The song to me is a warning that goes unheeded, and the bringer is ever more desperate for it. It seems to fit the times.
My favorite reactor and one of my favorite bands/songs. Sigh. First saw Disturbed live in a not-remotely-full venue, but they put on the performance of a lifetime. Blessed to see them again not too long ago and they moved us all to tears. It’s a gift to rock out to their hard classic Down With the Sickness, then feel the contrast of the ache and bittersweet joy of Hold Onto Memories. You referenced the ‘proper orchestral arrangement”: I hope you will watch their performance on Conan, whether you make a reaction video or not. Just gorgeous.
Hi, my friend! I never thought I would like a heavy metal singer, but WOW! How AWESOME was he! So powerful! The POINT is being made! I love Simon and Garfunkel, but as Simon said, “ This song is now HIS!” What an honor! Boy, music can come out of LEFT FIELD, and shake you to the core!
I'm a PTX fan. I've been skipping your reviews recently because you haven't been reviewing the music I love. With this one though, you've brought me back. Great review! I look forward to your look at the PTX version.
Another Simon and Garfunkel reaction I highly suggest is Queensryche's cover of Scarborough Fair. It was a cut b-side from their 1991 album Empire, but is easily one of my favorite tracks from them. Also, you asked how David can do vocal distortion without injuring his voice, and he went over that in detail in an interview he did on The Charismatic Voice. He is naturally a baritone and classically trained as a Cantor. In that interview, he said that he only has his bass range as a result of his classical training. He can indeed hit notes higher than the A he hits here. In the song "Divisive" I believe he hits an E5 (my ear may be off on that) more than once at 50 years old.
I'd never heard, or heard of this version until I started hanging out in the reaction channel parts of TH-cam, but there's no question it's a powerful one. There's so many good ones out there - Peter and Tim, the Hound and the Fox with Adam Chance, even the Longest Johns have recorded it.
This is the version I was always listening to, and my all time favorite before my time was invaded by Dimash. 😄It captures my type of music very much. I hope there's a Kazakh or Russian or even Mandarin version of this song, in this genre haha 😎
This is one of my favourite songs, and this cover always gives goosebumps when listening to it. There is a group called Life in 3D that also did an beautiful cover of this too, that I suggest you checking out! Also wanna say that you do an great job at analyzing the instrumental aspects of songs, while also not overdoing it!
I usually listen to metal or rock music when I’m feeling low, those types of music can really distract my chaotic though and make me feel better. Although I’m not a fan of it, I prefer jazz music to listen to every day. I saw this cover version a few years ago and I instantly liked it more than the original one. It’s hard to explain why, but the song just touched my heart. So when I saw this reaction, I jumped into it . And I don’t care if it’s 3:30 AM now! 😂Thank you for your reaction, the song really made my day. Love it! 😘
um. So why do I suddenly feel so utterly and completely disturbed after that powerful ending. wow..🌹😲 "The Sound of Silence" is the type of song that morphs-shape-shifts depending on who is singing--performing. I felt the same way about "Hijo de la Luna". The lyrics are the same but it can suddenly seem like a completely different song sung by Simon-Garfunkel, a Ptx, Peter and Tim and now a Disturbed. All are valid interpretations. And I LOVE them all. 🥰💗🎀 Each artist (literally) gets to put their own emotional time stamp on how they want to deliver this song and invites the listener to 'come along'. Wonderful analysis! I really love this piano-sheet music set up. It reminds me of a player piano but I'm pretty sure I'd jump if it suddenly began to roll. 👀 PS Mitch sports a "Sir" look in one of my favorite Ptx songs--"Perfume Medley". 🗾:)
I could not click on this fast enough! And you did not disappoint with your analysis☺ David Draiman is an amazing vocalist. Hopefully you will also watch his live performance of Sound of Silence on Conan O'Brien. I would love to see what you have to say about that performance too. Now, off to buy you a cup of hot chocolate 😉
Hope your doing well. Glad your hearing this version, as it hits people in the feels very hard compared to other versions. I believe S. & G.'s original was a "message" sung in a way it would be listened to at the time. This version was to present it as it needs to be felt. Finally, Pentatonix presents it as it will be when its been recognized, and is a memory instead of something impacting our lives directly. I am not extremely religious, but this song presents as a prayer to me, thanks!😊
David was raised Jewish- and was trained to be a “Hazan”, i.e A Cantor in the Jewish faith (they lead the prayers in the synagogue) so his foundation for his vocals is much better than what a lot of people think based on what they hear of disturbed. This cover showcased so much more of his range to people who may not normally listen to disturbed, or just think he’s yelling. I saw him in February and he was great live. I don’t think people have to pick one over the other- there merits are in different areas, i just enjoy them both 😊
Very much an astoundingly dramatic and heavy-hearted rendition of a classic tune. The word epic does fit quite well by the time the song is in its final stretch. Despite being considered a nu metal band, here Disturbed absolutely transcended their sub-genre and crafted excellence. / And for the first time, I find myself a bit envious of a classical music background. I’m only self-taught, and you can learn a lot from numerous sources over time if you pay attention. But playing melodies at will would be nice.
Really check out the live version with Conan O’Brien to get the real concept of his voice, I also heard he had a cold during the live version. I prefer the live version to the studio version.

One of the rare occasions that a cover surpasses the original.
@@kcraft9087 Certainly stands all alone out there, doesn't it? And the classical references to the River Styx & Charon's Boat at the end is haunting
Beautiful.
Kind of like "Hurt" with NIN and Johnny Cash!💙
I believe Simon actually called David. Might be internet rumors, who knows. I kinda want to believe he did.
And Geoff Castellucci's version is sorrow the warning was ignored. Another side of the coin, as it were.💙
And the pentatonix version is hopeful or something. I heard the too and agree. All three versions are just beautiful
And Pentatonix's version was the hope.
What a brilliant analysis. You express beautifully what I have been feeling.
@@wh2424 I have to 2nd your comment, as it expressed my thoughts. 🖖❤
Pentatonix did a popular cover
@@michmirich 👍Yep, it is one of my favorites. 🖖 ❤
I am curious of your impression on Forestella's version if you heard. If not yet, please try and tell me your thoughts.
David has cantor training. Disturbed is one of those bands where they can truly be metal, but also has a wonderful softer side. They have many original songs, but love adding in a cover song to their albums. This rendition still brings me to tears. Love your reaction per usual.
Unfortunately, it has been pitch corrected into oblivion. We know the dude can sing, so let him sing.
@M0rket I've seen him sing this song live. If there's pitch correction added, I couldn't tell. Although I know on Conan, it was pitch corrected as David had a high fever that night.
Your videos are not too long. We're here for them.
🙏
Totally agree. I can't get enough!
I grew up with the original and have held it dear, however, this version brings me to tears. David and his band have created a masterpiece and paid an incredible homage to this song.
The live version that Disturbed did on the Conan show was absolutely stunning!! You must check it out. Still beautifully orchestral, but live!❤
You can tell he was ill though as the high notes were not as pure and he had to use fry to get to the highest note. But impressive that he did it live dispute being sick. And having a timpani behind him.
I love the live version even more than the studio version.
It's also autotuned. The studio version is pitch corrected, which is like a mini-autotune, but is definitely less painful to listen to. Wings of Pegasus did an in depth breakdown of it. There's several un-edited live versions floating around, mostly from concert footage from the crowd.
@@debiw8599
It's not just autotuned.
Fantastic.
He adds distortion correctly, without using his true vocal folds...he knows what he's doing and uses the distortion for effect.
Highly recommend the PTX-version! Someone described the "original as a warning, Disturbed as anger that warning wasn't listened to and PTX as a warning with hope"... Anyway, this song is magic ✨ Love your reaction!
👀
Sir Hairless, every time I watch your reactions/analyses, I'm deeply moved by how beautifully you weave sharing your musical knowledge (super instructive for me) and your emotional reaction (touching me to the toes).
You're exceptional, thank you for sharing your knowledge and beauty with the world!
I'm not a huge metal fan, but David Draimon is an exception. His voice is so versatile, he can sing just about anything. He and Elizabeth Zharroff sat for an interview and he was amazing ... open, educational, etc. A great human being.
The one on Conan is really good with the instrumental background. Also David was a Jewish Cantor before singing in this metal band.
David Draiman has classical training and you can hear that. I would suggest to listen to one of their most famous songs "Down with the sickness", to get a grasp on what their style of Metal is. Greets from Germany!
After that "Are you ready?"
Always makes my cry😢 🇩🇪
So I'll be the first to say you should follow-up with Pentatonix's version
👀
@@SirHairlessdefinitely❤❤❤❤❤
And then Geoff Castellucci's. :)
And then Forestella's.
But PTX’s first and foremost
Its been mentioned in comments on multiple reactions and down below as well, but not all in one, and the most popular versions of this song (that I've heard) and the feelings behind them:
Original: The Warning
Disturbed: The Anger when that warning was ignored
Geoff: The sorrow felt from the warning being ignored
Pentatonix: The hopefulness that all might not be lost
(Kind of spoilery for last 2, but since it was already mentioned in comments i thought I'll put it as a single whole comment, since I agree with this)
Iconic song indeed! Both Forestella and Pentatonix have excellent versions of this song released in Jan and Feb of 2019 respectively.
Yep...right there...the change in your face and eyes, is exactly what happened to all of Us when we first heard it.
P.S. 1: I’m going to show this video to a couple of 'metal' friends who will likely love your analysis as well :)
Sir Hairless I really enjoy hearing your thoughts and analysis of these iconic songs. It brings a whole new insight. Thank you
I love both the original and this cover.
This is, BY FAR, the best cover of this song!
Thank you! 🎸 🎹 🎤 🎶 🖤👌🙏
This was emotional...I'v heard this many times..and every time it gets me. Thank you. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
Thank you!
Love, Love, Love this version. So powerful. Saw exactly when it hit you. I cry often listening to this version.
I think the live version is even better. Tysm for your detailed reaction.
My absolute favourite version of this song. Thank you for the breakdown & analysis. I love Disturbed too, not a genre that I listen to frequently.

I cannot listen to this while driving. I have to jump it. It is one of those songs that mesmerizes the listener.
And your knowledge contributes so much to my understanding of songs.
Disturbed- The Light ❤ thought provoking song and video. I’m sure you will love the video and David’s voice
Given where the world is, I'm sure S&G would not mind the added intensity this version brings to their lyrics. Thanks as always for the reaction.
Love you! 😘

Another Great Reaction. There are 2 more covers of The Sound of Silence that you need to react to -- Pentatonix and Geoff Castilucci's covers.
Simon & Garfunkle - a polite warning
Disturbed - angry because you did not heed the warning
Pentatonix - at the funeral
Geoff Castilucci - the wake following the funeral.

Браво Маэстро! 👏👏👏
So glad you finally did this analysis!
Simon and Garfunkel have some beautiful songs that always make great covers too. (Like Hazy Shade of Winter by Gerard Way)
This "Sound Of Silence" is the best cover of that song that I have ever heard. Goosebumps every time! The first times I‘ve listened to this it made me cry.
David Draiman‘s voice is epic and that build up! 🫠🥰
How wonderful to get one of your breakdowns for that song.
If you like this one, you might also want to check out Disturbed's cover of Land of Confusion OG by Phil Collins. ❤
Genesis, actually. The video was the first with puppets/Muppets things. I think that was the distinction. It was very strange! Lol
The Disturbed version is, of course, excellent. I appreciate the modernization of the lyrics, too.
In my Patreon version where I watch a couple of interviews with David, he mentions other covers they've done and Land of Confusion was one he mentioned - that was the only one I don't know! It's now on my list for the future 👍🏽
Love this! If you’re going to listen on your own, try the Conan version live. Thanks for sharing
Of course he is angry. The original was warning us and 40+ years later you fools did not listen
Really appreciate it, thanks!
They might need work but here they are as follows for this video:

This makes me so happy!❤
Simon& Garfunkel's original was a lot too happy for my gusto 🙈
And I was so glad, that Disturbed brought out this version ❤
David has a great voice 👍🏻
Then Geoff Castellucci's version came out and it is sooo sad, it gets me crying every time 😢
Somebody in Geoff's comments explained it so good...
1. Simon&Garfunkel --> the warning
2. Disturbed --> the anger that nobody is listening
3. Geoff Castellucci --> sadness that nobody listened
Disturbed and Geoff share the first place for me personally, very much depending on my daily mood ❤

I loved this version of the song. Its powerfull performance. Its always make me sad.
Interesting that you choose this song now. The way I relate to this song, the build up of anger is totally understandable. The song to me is a warning that goes unheeded, and the bringer is ever more desperate for it. It seems to fit the times.
Really loved your review and response to this song. He is a trained cantor. The Light is another great one. Luv from Australia ❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️
There is a brief clip of David Draiman doing a sound check while on tour, and he is singing Unchained Melody solo acapella, and it is stunning!!
😮 that sounds lovely
And their version has over 1 billion views, which nuts+++ This cover is just perfection.
Still have to pick a specific time when I can listen to this version because it never fails to make me cry.... Thank you for your analysis xxx
The "sound of silence" that starts the vid gets them every time
Your reactions can be as long as you need. We shall be delighted to hear all you have to say.
This is epic. Davids voice is so dramatic, I love it. Thanks for your as always high quality analysis.
I'd never heard, or heard of this version until I started hanging out in the reaction channel parts of TH-cam, but there's no question it's a powerful one.
There's so many good ones out there - Peter and Tim, the Hound and the Fox with Adam Chance, even the Longest Johns have recorded it.
Can only imagine how many covers are out there! And what's more, how many of them are amazing as well 😅
Always love your reactions! Thank you!!

Dan Vasc has also done a fantastic cover of this. It's a beautiful song and i love every cover i have heard.
This is my favorite version of this song. Thank you.❤
This is the version I was always listening to, and my all time favorite before my time was invaded by Dimash.
Love it! 😘
um. So why do I suddenly feel so
utterly and completely disturbed after
that powerful ending. wow..🌹😲
"The Sound of Silence"
is the type of song that morphs-shape-shifts
depending on who is singing--performing.
I felt the same way about "Hijo de la Luna".
The lyrics are the same but it can suddenly
seem like a completely different song sung
by Simon-Garfunkel, a Ptx, Peter and Tim
and now a Disturbed.
All are valid interpretations.
And I LOVE them all. 🥰💗🎀
Each artist (literally) gets to put their
own emotional time stamp on how they
want to deliver this song and invites the
listener to 'come along'.
Wonderful analysis! I really love this piano-sheet
music set up. It reminds me of a player piano but
I'm pretty sure I'd jump if it suddenly began to roll. 👀
PS Mitch sports a "Sir" look in one of my favorite
Ptx songs--"Perfume Medley". 🗾:)
your eyes got misty... This cover strikes again.
❤
