@Sir Hairless, Honestly David sounds so much more incredible when he did it live on the Conan O'Brian show 👏 ...I will tell you more about that performance if you do it 🙏. Even though the video is incredible, the recorded version is just not as good as the live. Funny enough, David hated that performance, yet we ALL LOVE it so much more!❤ David was classically trained, so yes he has an amazing voice, but yes very recognizable to him alone. Simon and Garfunkel was the warning, David's is the anger of the warning ignored 😢
You should go watch their live version of this song on Conan. Also, I’d suggest you watch their live show in Germany at Rock Am Ring , Down With the Sickness is the song. This is in their normal heavy metal style, but it’s awesome. David Draiman’s voice is amazing. I actually have tickets to see them in April 2025 as they are doing a tour in the US. I think they have overseas ones too, but not sure. As David Draiman is 51, his voice and touring etc, who knows how many more concerts they’ll do. So, I’m very glad I was able to get tickets.
I'm 73 and when I first heard this, maybe 5 years ago, I was stunned and obsessed. I still can't listen to this one without crying. To me, the original was a standard of my youth. It was still hopeful; a warning, but hopeful. David Draiman sang this angrily, a demand that we pay attention: armageddon is here. And now Geoff Castellucci has his version, which - to me - is acknowledgment and sadness. All 3 are glorious and completely different. Thank you for doing this. I'm in awe of Draiman's power and ability to convey nuance and emotion here.
i dont know where i read that comment but i like it: the simon and garfunkel version was a warning, the disturbed version was the anger of the warning being ignored.
I've thought of it as Simon and Garfunkel's being the sorrow, Disturbed's being the anger, and Geoff being the hope. And Peyton Parish... being the pre-boss-fight music XD
@Drake844221 ROFL, I haven't hear Peyton's yet, I'll have to check it out! "Boss fight" seems to suit his music though! All I'll add is that parts of Geoff's video could also be a hair product commercial. My oh my, he is a fine looking fellow! Hair envy is a real thing!😉
It's odd how many feel the same. It's like the lyrics didn't match the original rythm and mood. Apparantly Paul Simon himself put the video of Disturbed's version of his song on his social media.
It reminds me of a reading I heard of Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night I once heard and have never been able to find again. Most of the readings I've found are either just flat, or sad, somber things, but this one was full of fire and bile, demanding and exhorting, filled with the rage at the inevitability of death that the poem calls for with its every verse. That reading is the only one I've ever heard that I felt did the poem justice.
David really did not want to attempt this song because it's so iconic. He wasn't sure he could hit those notes but subsequently decided to make it his own. This version always makes me cry because he makes you realize how angry we all should be. I love the grit and gravel in his voice in the second half.
Paul Simon was in awe at this rendition and urged the people on Twitter to listen to this. Being fangirled over by an icon over their song you covered must be one of the highest honors for a band such as disturbed
I caught an interview with him, he protects his voice - no smoking, no drinking, no partying. He described his life as lonely from not participating in a heavy metal life style.
David has cantor training. Disturbed is one of those bands where they can truly be metal, but also has a wonderful softer side. They have many original songs, but love adding in a cover song to their albums. This rendition still brings me to tears. Love your reaction per usual.
@M0rket I've seen him sing this song live. If there's pitch correction added, I couldn't tell. Although I know on Conan, it was pitch corrected as David had a high fever that night.
Simon and Garfunkel is the warning. Disturbed is the anger the warning was ignored. Geoff Castellucci is the sorrow of the fallout. Pentatonix is the hope for something to come after the fallout.
I saw Disturbed live at KC Rock Fest some years ago and they performed this song. While the rest of the concert was loud with just background noise and most of the 50,000 attendees shouting/singing, during this song, it was completely, almost eerily quiet (the only time we broke that silence was to cheer when hen changed the lyrics to "50,000 people, maybe more"). We were all completely enraptured. A huge crowd of people listening quietly in the dark to his amazing performance...it gave me goosebumps and, for some reason, made me teary. I'll never forget it.
I know nothing about music, but so many notes land like they are anthemic, each having a massive impact of it's own because of the arrangement... i still cry, want to stand with my eyes closed and yet watch the video for it's message and growing excitement to the end, and message.
I will never forget the powerful effect David's voice had on me when I first heard this version. You can only hear a song for the first time once but the shivers travel up my back every time I hear it. It's the anger against the silence, the oppression that moves me. I am glad you have heard it. Thank you.
I was speechless when we saw Disturbed in concert & David Draiman sounded exactly the same live. What an incredible show they put on. Taking my 12 year old to see them in April & he’s so excited. This is my favorite cover of this song. Simon & Garfunkel’s version sounds like a forewarning of what’s to come while David’s version portrays the raw emotion of that warning already come to pass. Side note: Draiman is a trained cantor I think for 17 years. He’s amazing.
You can tell he was ill though as the high notes were not as pure and he had to use fry to get to the highest note. But impressive that he did it live dispute being sick. And having a timpani behind him.
It's also autotuned. The studio version is pitch corrected, which is like a mini-autotune, but is definitely less painful to listen to. Wings of Pegasus did an in depth breakdown of it. There's several un-edited live versions floating around, mostly from concert footage from the crowd.
@@debiw8599 It's not just autotuned. It's so absurdly autotuned that it resembles stuff that is intentionally over-autotuned because they want to create an artificial robotic sound.
I don't love the live version. He wax sick and it shows. The visuals in this are stunning and tell such a story, but his face is fabulous, no movement, no theatrics just expressions. Fantastic.
I grew up with the original and have held it dear, however, this version brings me to tears. David and his band have created a masterpiece and paid an incredible homage to this song.
Me too - the original was one of my childhood favourites. I came across this version a few years ago, and nearly didn't listen to it, as I didn't think anyone could do it better. Boy, was a wrong. This version is stunning and the accompanying video is fantastic.
I've heard it said that when God asked David if he wanted the voice of an angel or a demon that David simply said yes. As someone who has heard them live his control really is just that damn good.
I'm pretty confident saying most everyone gets emotional hear/seeing this version. Side note, we can see the moment you get chills/goosebumps and a tear comes to your eye. Me to bud, this version does it everytime.
19:20 Simon & Garfunkel said this song was about our inability to communicate effectively, many people (myself included) say S&G’s version was the warning, Disturbed’s version is the anger that the warning wasn’t headed and still continues to today. I’m a 59 year old US Army Cold War era Veteran, I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel, but I really like Disturbed’s version better. There’s an interview with Simon on the Internet I read somewhere, and he’s asked about Disturbed’s cover of his song. He basically said that their version was on his playlist, he posted the video on one of his Social Media accounts (which he has NEVER done with any covers of his songs), and basically said (maybe not in these exact words) “The song is theirs now.” That right there tells you how epic the cover was. I’m a fan of Disturbed as well, have been to several of their concerts, and have even met the band & hung out backstage with them at one concert. I myself was skeptical about them covering this song, if they made it Metal I didn’t want to hear it, as you stated It’s an Iconic & legendary song. When I finally did listen to it…. I was blown away, had goosebumps, and even tears running down my face. It had a major impact on me, S&G’s version was folky & “happy” , while Disturbed’s cover moved me emotionally and made me feel like I understood the song’s message way better.
I'm not a huge metal fan, but David Draimon is an exception. His voice is so versatile, he can sing just about anything. He and Elizabeth Zharroff sat for an interview and he was amazing ... open, educational, etc. A great human being.
Was also awesome how easy you could see the emotions running across your face as you watched the 2nd half. I dont think this version has ever not touched someone fundamentally.
The word epic is too often used when things are not. Then you hear a true bonafide epic like this. A perfect delivery of wisdom, power, truth. Forcing us to endure the gut wrenching recognition of our mistakes and shortcomings in tears, rather than scolding.
That raspy distortion Draiman introduces in the final third of the song isn't coming from his vocal chords - he's letting the soft tissues & cartilage above his vocal chords provide that texture on top of the note produced by his vocal folds. My understanding is that Draiman learned how to control his breath support and vocal tone in cantorial school, so he has a lot of precision with his vocal fry such that it sounds good instead of ugly. I am struck by the careful way he softens his consonants, allowing him to record his audio with his mouth almost touching the microphone without popping. This approach allows him to present intimate vocals as if he's singing right in your ear. His live performance on Conan is worth listening to as well, since you can watch him work the microphone (and you can hear how he sings through a cold).
Brilliant breakdown of the music within the song. You had me hearing things I hadn't noticed previously, being so entranced in David's incredible voice/rendition. It's pretty cool that you can be so analytical, and still appear to genuinely enjoy what you've heard. I really enjoyed this reaction. Great job.
To answer your question, the piercings on his chin are known as “dermals”. David’s voice is amazing and indicative of his classical training as a cantor. Disturbed’s version is my favorite and very much in keeping with the times; the rage is palpable.
This song was the first I heard of Disturbed and loved it. When I went searching for other Disturbed songs I listened to Down With The Sickness and was shocked!!! I looked them up and found they were a heavy metal band. After listening to more of it decided I loved their music. I never listened to heavy metal before so I'm glad they I was introduced to it by The Sound of Silence.
David's voice is incredibly powerful, and I'm honestly stunned that you hadn't heard Disturbed! I hope you get to experience more of their music, whether on this channel or on your own, just so you can see more of what he can do!
This is, by far, my favorite version of The Sound of Silence... I say that as someone raised with the S&G version. There is so much more feeling in this version.
The first few times I heard this, it made me weep. I relate to a sorrow in this music. For me, it is not anger. I've loved Disturbed for years, and I was SO glad they covered this song.
It blows my mind that you're able to hear all the details and articulate them so quickly and clearly. What an amazing gift you have. Thanks for sharing.
Sir Hairless, every time I watch your reactions/analyses, I'm deeply moved by how elegantly you weave sharing your musical knowledge (super instructive for me) and your emotional reaction (touching me to the toes). You're exceptional, thank you for sharing your thorough knowledge and beautiful soul with the world!
AND DAVID was actually sick and did not want to sing that night.. imagin what we've lost not hearing him that night as that is one of the BEST versions he did❤❤❤
David Draiman has classical training and you can hear that. I would suggest to listen to one of their most famous songs "Down with the sickness", to get a grasp on what their style of Metal is. Greets from Germany!
Whilst you can hear some metal in his voice with The Sound Of Silence, he restrains himself a lot. If you really want to hear him "release the beast", Down With The Sickness is a MUST watch / listen.
Hello, thank you for reviewing the Sound of Silence song. I've never seen your page but I came across by just wondering in general how people make live comments while viewing videos. I must say I am pleasantly surprised. I only play piano and drums by ear because I cannot read sheet music but listening to you speak about the variations and the specific names piqued my interest. The song in general is one of my top five favorites. I would also love to have you listen to the Shinedown version of Simple Man. Our Lady Peace, Somewhere Out There. Or the new artist Tyler Braden, The Devil You Know. Cheers! Hot Chocolate on the house.
This is the last time I listen to “everybody.” LOL. “Everybody” said this was a really creepy version so I kind of kept skipping it but I decided to watch your reaction. I LOVE this guy’s voice. The visuals are stark and (I guess) maybe creepy, but not at all what I expected. The grit at the end worked-he wasn’t just screaming/snarling the whole song out, and he has a really rich, obviously well-trained voice. Loved this reaction, and thanks for the intro to this group!
Always worth the risk checking out things you might otherwise not check out! Worst that can happen is you don't like it and stop watching after a short while. Best that can happen... well, there are a lot of good things 😅
@@SirHairless Usually true, but for whatever reason, I’m prone to earworms and will often hear a song tumbling through my brain off and on for days. I’m just not that into most metal (there are some exceptions), so I try to avoid having the cacophony in my head if I can avoid. It’s not just metal. I absolutely love Queen, but every stinking time I hear Fat Bottom Girls I won’t be able to get rid of it for days. Not a bad song, but as an earworm it drives me nuts. OTOH it can be nice to have this kind of auditory recall, as I don’t need any devices if I want to “hear” music.
if you want GRIT and Growl (old school) hit up Metallica One video best 8 minutes of your life and then you will understand what your (grand)Parents went thru not assuming age
I watch reactions to this song all the time because I love it. Your presentation is amazing. Yeah I know nothing about music but what makes me happy or sad. This was s lovely.
First time I saw a video of yours and wow, you add a lot of information to what is already known! This is by far my favorite rendition of this song, plain and simple. For the technical information, I need people like you, but man, emotionally, this hits you in the heart with a whole range of emotions coming through... I love it. This one is on top of all the versions of this song out there. Thank you for this gift to add to my already amazing experience with this song!
David Draimen is is a god among men, vocally. When he brings in his "metal" voice, it adds so much power and substance to the song. Disturbed is one of my favorite metal bands just because of his voice snd of all the covers of Sound of Silence that I've heard, Disturbed's is my favorite.
As a pianist that can’t sing worth a damn, I really like your analysis and style. Your music theory and ear are top notch, and your explanations highlight the talent involved with a performance like this. Thank you!
David Draiman is an amazingly talented singer. He originally studied to become a Cantor for Judaic religious ceremonies. As you can tell, he chose a different path, though still showcasing his astounding talent.
David was trained as a Cantor, and there's a lot of solid vocal technique supported the rasp, which is exactly why he can produce that sound without blowing out his voice. After about 100 listens just because I was so obsessed, my inner vocal music geek gave a couple listens just paying attention to things like vocal placement and tongue and mouth position. I'd highly recommend watching a couple reactions by vocal coaches who can explain it all far better that I can
I love both the original and this cover. I like the "anger" as if he were angry to us people not having listened to the previous Simon and Garfunkel's warning : It becomes now more urgent to act but maybe it's too late. Thank you for your precious information on the instrumental parts : I will pay more attention to them now. Take care 🙏🏻🇫🇷
Thank you. This is so incredibly powerful! My understanding is that the lead singer is actually classically trained! His delivery is haunting and totally mesmerizes me. This is stunning and impactful. I've been waiting to see you react to this and to hear your thoughts and observations. Yes, 'epic'!
I'm so glad you reacted to this. I've been waiting. I was a child when the original came out, and I remember being angry when I first heard it. I felt that soft, harmonious version was still an apocalyptic warning, and when I would sing it - which I did a lot - my version would also be loud and angry as it built toward the end. I think David's vision of this song links into the feelings the lyrics hold tight in other versions. I've watched a lot of reactions to this trying to discover some of the secrets as to why this version is so powerful and I knew you would help me with your analysis. Thank you!
7:35 I don’t know how much you read online about the singer David Draiman, but he is also Classically trained, and comes from a family of Cantors as well. Hence his amazing voice.
There's a trailer for the film Bonhoeffer (the film is being released this month) and it used this song. The person/people who put that trailer together did such a fantastic job making this song so much deeper emotionally than it already was with the way the lyrics matched up too well with the German Axis and what Bonhoeffer went through. I, personally, haven't been to a cinema for nearly ten years and I equally don't care about movie trailers because they usually don't get my attention but that trailer did. I've ended up watching it at least fifteen times now over the last few months and the mere fact that I ended up emotionally invested just from the trailer made me decide to go see the film in cinema. Only it turns out no cinema near where I live is even going to show the film.
Update: the cinema near me showed the film. People in the lobby I talked to after already knew what film I saw because I was trying to stop crying. While watching, I forgot I was in a cinema with other people until that line near the end that got the first audible reaction from us in the audience, we were all so silently invested in what was going on until that point and it hit us hard.
Its been mentioned in comments on multiple reactions and down below as well, but not all in one, and the most popular versions of this song (that I've heard) and the feelings behind them: Original: The Warning Disturbed: The Anger when that warning was ignored Geoff: The sorrow felt from the warning being ignored Pentatonix: The hopefulness that all might not be lost (Kind of spoilery for last 2, but since it was already mentioned in comments i thought I'll put it as a single whole comment, since I agree with this)
I've been listening to music since before the days of the Beatles. I have a few favorite songs from over the years. This version of Sounds of Silence is by far my favorite song and the ONLY one that hits me emotionally every single time I hear it. David Draiman's voice is amazing and I'm so glad he chose to cover this song.
I am a stoic person. I, historically, do not cry. This song, regardless of who sings it, makes me cry... every single time. I can not seem to build a resistance to it. I can listen to it back to back ten, twenty times in a row and I will cry the entire time. It is not a sobbing, curled in a corner crying. It is a wide open, standing with arms outstretched, looking to the skies and shameless crying. No other song I have ever heard does that to me...for me. I love, and hate, this song. Thank you @SirHairless for this analysis. It was absolutely brilliant.
What a time to be a metal head in though, going from generations of prejudices about how metal is, what it supposedly represents and how people listening to it presumably acts. When in fact, metal heads are just human beings with emotions and means to express themselves in another way than "usual". Seeing people finding out that metal music is complex and actually not that bad - is so nice! It's great even... thank you for another good video, Sir! 🖤
David draiman is one hell of a singer and a genuinely good guy. You have to review one of their more standard disturbed songs, down with the sickness, stupify, or even just watching the live version of this on Conan, his range is wild (and he was sick during the live show).
With every verse, he introduced a new instrument. It's beautiful, and subtle, because you don't immediately hear it. piano, guitar, violin, drum, orchestra
What a nice surprise!😃You absolutely nailed this analysis, Sir Hairless! Your interpretation and explanations were so interesting and well-crafted that I felt like I could almost fully understand all the technical language/symbols on the musical concepts you discussed - you’re truly outstanding!👌Just like the original song, I really like this version of ‘The sound of silence’ (both the studio recording and the Conan live performance), and I think Disturbed earned a well-deserved respect for taking the huge risk of creating a metal-influenced interpretation of this monumental and meaningful folk-rock classic. I guess the result speaks for itself: this cover filled with some good dose of sorrow/angst seems to please many people from a wide range of “music tribes”. In my case, even though I’m a big fan of some types of metal songs, Disturbed has never been one of the bands I choose to listen when I want to get my fill of heavy metal; however, this amazing cover allowed me to fully appreciate David Draiman’s vocal abilities. It’s fascinating when we’re exposed to new experiences that can help us to change our minds about certain types of music/bands/singers/etc., and I’m very happy that you decided to venture into the metal(ish) territory again - thank you very much for this great video, Sir! P.S. 1: I’m going to show this video to a couple of 'metal' friends who will likely love your analysis as well :) P.S. 2: If I had the right to say something about the matter, I’d vote ‘nope’ to the idea of having massive piercings in SH’s chin... P.S. 3: That low note you pulled out of your sleeves twice in the video was something I’ve never heard before from you - you have an impressive vocal range, Sir!😊
I love the original, but I like this epic rock version just as much. David's voice is very pleasant, but his increasingly haunting singing reinforces the message of the song much more and has a lasting impact on me.
As a recovering addict this hits hard because the thoughts still come and haunt you...this song is haunting and has a positive message while being honest...
So raw, it rips my heart to shreds, it's such a testimony on what we are missing when communication is lost to neon gods and false prophets, all flash and no substance, the hope is that perhaps in the rest between the noise maybe we can reach out to each other to speak, to be heard, to teach one another and reach one another and maybe find some semblance of peace. There is such naked beauty and pain in this performance. It's truly spectacular.
This is the song that brought me back to rock/metal after a hiatus of over 50 years. I quit listening when Joplin and Hendrix died in the same year, so close together. A couple of years ago, a friend was insistent that I listen to this version. I did, simply because that's what you do for good friends. And, I was blown away. I started listening to everything I could find by Disturbed and bands performing in the same style. My exploring has lead to so much great music and I have listened to genres and styles that I never thought I would be interested in. I finally found a home in Nightwish and symphonic metal, but I am always willing and eager to listen to other genres of music. Some I like, some I dont, but you never know unless you try, do you?
Hey Gaye! I never knew, that this was the song, that brought you back to listening to music. Imagine you didn't do it, we would have never known each other. What a sad thing that would have been. Love you! 😘
Wow! I had never heard of Disturbed! Amazing really how the song is the same but totally different! Very powerful cover and stirring performance! Eye and ear opening analysis Sir H, incredible stuff! Thank you! 🎸 🎹 🎤 🎶 🖤👌🙏
Having heard this performance several times, I looked forward to your reaction when David's power came through. You got it. Incredible performance along with a beautiful video. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I absolutely love your reaction and break down of the music. It's been years since I've played the piano. You just gave me a thrilling challenge at 70 year old. Thank you for doing this.
'Just discovered Disturbed's cover a few hours ago (shamefully), and have watched countless reaction/analysis videos since. You explain it musically... the notes/chords, the arrangement, beats, the vocals. You feel it... the angst/emotion. YOU shared your knowledge, emotions and understanding wonderfully. Thank you!
As I listened for the first time I misheard a line. The phrase, "tenement halls" became Tiananmen falls. I can't shake it and it adds a whole new dimension to my understanding and perception of humanity. We must not forget those brave souls lost. In silence and in voice they are honoured... we will remember. 🇬🇧
First time I heard this was when a friend played it on the radio during a day trip. I was shocked, speechless, and he got me!!! I played it for weeks or months. It is on my playlist. I’m not a metal fan but I also found the interviews, etc because I was entranced. After hundreds of listens, the goosebumps, chills appear. Wonderful reaction, as always. ❤❤❤ Heading to Patreon.
Oh fantastic, you came to this! Thank you! I refused to watch this cover for years because I always loved singing the original and was afraid... But then it touched me so deeply, it still brings me to tears. It is completely different atmosphere, incredible singing, and amazing pictures and illustrations they created to the lyrics... Love your analysis, thank you, until next time! ❤️
Agree! I absolutely love this version but my Disturbed playlist that I listen to during work doesn't include it because depending on my mood I'll either end up in tears or just completely away with the faeries lost in it...
Growing up listening to Paul Simon's version, it was written as a warning but he and Art Garfunkel displayed such harmony that the meaning to the song was lost. David using his voice brought more meaning to Paul's intentions to me. Truly a stunning remake.
For the last few weeks, I’ve been down the rabbit hole of reactions to this cover, going back through the years, so your timing is perfect! I appreciate your analysis and even after countless listens to this song, you added more depth and taught me something new today. Many thanks. 🙏 New sub.
So happy you did this! I also stumbled across this a few years ago, and it's my favorite after PTX. Althought Peter Hollens and Tim Foust's version is now right up there for me after you reacted to them. Forestella also has a great version of this - hope you do a reaction to it too! Wow...this is the first time I've seen the official video. What I saw was the Conan performance which others have mentioned (and which I hope you'll react to some day!). It brought me to tears. Also goosebumpes. I go back to it every time I hear another version of Sound of Silence because it's so good. I agree with everything you said about the video. I loved it. Eerie as you said, but also so evocative!
I was lucky enough to see them live, they did two versions of this, one without singing, and a version where he sang. It was phenomenal I highly recomend.
Well you’ve made my day! I so glad that you have chosen this one to do reaction and analysis of. It’s something that seems to get to everyone. I hope you felt it too. Thank you 🌈
Hi!!!
Genesis, actually. The video was the first with puppets/Muppets things. I think that was the distinction. It was very strange! Lol The Disturbed version is, of course, excellent. I appreciate the modernization of the lyrics, too.
In my Patreon version where I watch a couple of interviews with David, he mentions other covers they've done and Land of Confusion was one he mentioned - that was the only one I don't know! It's now on my list for the future 👍🏽
Sir, You have the ability to speak the language of music in a way that I fully understand. Remarkable. As a painter/artist, I’m thinking that you understand the whole of music , all of it. Does that make any sense? Anyway, I can safely say that this is the very first time that I am more interested in your showing the movement in the song, than listening to my favorite song . I clicked for the song, impressed with the content creator!
Highly recommend the PTX-version! Someone described the "original as a warning, Disturbed as anger that warning wasn't listened to and PTX as a warning with hope"... Anyway, this song is magic ✨ Love your reaction!
never heard PTX version but its too early to say they have a meaning id say they saw another band do a cover and get famous so they did same song for the HOPE

One of the rare occasions that a cover surpasses the original.
@@kcraft9087 Certainly stands all alone out there, doesn't it? And the classical references to the River Styx & Charon's Boat at the end is haunting
Funny, I am not a metal fan, but really do like him doing this song.

What a brilliant analysis. You express beautifully what I have been feeling.
@@wh2424 I have to 2nd your comment, as it expressed my thoughts. 🖖❤
Pentatonix did a popular cover
@@michmirich 👍Yep, it is one of my favorites. 🖖 ❤
I am curious of your impression on Forestella's version if you heard. If not yet, please try and tell me your thoughts.
i dont know where i read that comment but i like it: the simon and garfunkel version was a warning, the disturbed version was the anger of the warning being ignored.
And Geoff Castellucci's version is sorrow the warning was ignored. Another side of the coin, as it were.💙
And the pentatonix version is hopeful or something. I heard the too and agree. All three versions are just beautiful
And Pentatonix's version was the hope.
I’m 71 and grew up with the Simon and Garfunkel version, but this version finally serve the rage I felt this song deserves, thank you!
I agree. When I first heard it, I said,”This IS the song!” I still cry every time.
It's odd how many feel the same. It's like the lyrics didn't match the original rythm and mood.
Apparantly Paul Simon himself put the video of Disturbed's version of his song on his social media.
💯👍👍⭐️🇬🇧
@@timogeerties3487 For any band really, I mean check out James Hetfield's reaction to Elton John's opinion on Metallica, he leaves James in tears.
💯👍👍👍⭐️
Paul Simon said this is the best he ever heard the song sung even better then him
David really stole the song the same way that Johnny stole hurt
I caught an interview with him, he protects his voice - no smoking, no drinking, no partying. He described his life as lonely from not participating in a heavy metal life style.
David has cantor training. Disturbed is one of those bands where they can truly be metal, but also has a wonderful softer side. They have many original songs, but love adding in a cover song to their albums. This rendition still brings me to tears. Love your reaction per usual.
Unfortunately, it has been pitch corrected into oblivion. We know the dude can sing, so let him sing.
@M0rket I've seen him sing this song live. If there's pitch correction added, I couldn't tell. Although I know on Conan, it was pitch corrected as David had a high fever that night.
There is a short video of David warming up with Unchained Melody, amazing
@@M0rketit hasn't been 'pitch corrected into oblivion', at all. Stop trying to sound cool.
@@M0rketyou’re just wrong. Very wrong. He is as good as it gets
As to the "anger"... Someone described it this way- The original was a pleading warning. This is the rage because the warning was not heeded.
Simon and Garfunkel is the warning.
Disturbed is the anger the warning was ignored.
Geoff Castellucci is the sorrow of the fallout.
Pentatonix is the hope for something to come after the fallout.
Very well said
Fantastic. ❤️
I saw them before this, but they were amazing. IMHO he has the best voice in music. Ever.
I know nothing about music, but so many notes land like they are anthemic, each having a massive impact of it's own because of the arrangement... i still cry, want to stand with my eyes closed and yet watch the video for it's message and growing excitement to the end, and message.
Sorry, very clumsy!
What an evocative memory.
I will never forget the powerful effect David's voice had on me when I first heard this version. You can only hear a song for the first time once but the shivers travel up my back every time I hear it. It's the anger against the silence, the oppression that moves me. I am glad you have heard it. Thank you.
I remember the first time I heard this cover. It literally stopped me in my tracks and brought tears to my eyes.
Blew me away. So many feelings. And awe, indescribable awe.
The live version that Disturbed did on the Conan show was absolutely stunning!! You must check it out. Still beautifully orchestral, but live!❤
You can tell he was ill though as the high notes were not as pure and he had to use fry to get to the highest note. But impressive that he did it live dispute being sick. And having a timpani behind him.
I love the live version even more than the studio version.
It's also autotuned. The studio version is pitch corrected, which is like a mini-autotune, but is definitely less painful to listen to. Wings of Pegasus did an in depth breakdown of it. There's several un-edited live versions floating around, mostly from concert footage from the crowd.
@@debiw8599
It's not just autotuned.
Fantastic.
The first version is a warning. This version is the rage
Pentatonix's version is more hopeful.
He adds distortion correctly, without using his true vocal folds...he knows what he's doing and uses the distortion for effect.
You can always tell when it hits home for the person reacting
19:20 Simon & Garfunkel said this song was about our inability to communicate effectively, many people (myself included) say S&G’s version was the warning, Disturbed’s version is the anger that the warning wasn’t headed and still continues to today.
I’m a 59 year old US Army Cold War era Veteran, I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel, but I really like Disturbed’s version better. There’s an interview with Simon on the Internet I read somewhere, and he’s asked about Disturbed’s cover of his song. He basically said that their version was on his playlist, he posted the video on one of his Social Media accounts (which he has NEVER done with any covers of his songs), and basically said (maybe not in these exact words) “The song is theirs now.”
That right there tells you how epic the cover was.
"Never heard this band before" ...There's a few artists where the phrase "Buckle up buttercup, you're going for a ride!" is absolutely warranted. XD
Never heard of waw aaaaa
If nobody has ever heard this version I dont think its possible to be prepared for it, and the fact that its even better live is mind blowing.
💯👍👍👍🇬🇧
His singing is practically instruction in correct vocal fry
Brilliant breakdown of the music within the song. You had me hearing things I hadn't noticed previously, being so entranced in David's incredible voice/rendition.
It's pretty cool that you can be so analytical, and still appear to genuinely enjoy what you've heard.
I really enjoyed this reaction. Great job.
To answer your question, the piercings on his chin are known as “dermals”.
David’s voice is amazing and indicative of his classical training as a cantor. Disturbed’s version is my favorite and very much in keeping with the times; the rage is palpable.
They are snakebites not dermals. They are different.
10k likes! You know what that means, right??? I cannot wait!❤
Up! Let's do the live version with Conan.
I'm a 64yr old woman & love Simon & Garfunkel. His rendition is genious! So very very different, yet superb. 👍👍👍
David's voice is incredibly powerful, and I'm honestly stunned that you hadn't heard Disturbed! I hope you get to experience more of their music, whether on this channel or on your own, just so you can see more of what he can do!
David Draiman is one of the most vocally talented singers we have now... Which says a lot coming from a country/80s rock lover...
Your videos are not too long. We're here for them.
🙏
Totally agree. I can't get enough!
Agree! I would listen at twice the length....like David K's videos!
Yep...right there...the change in your face and eyes, is exactly what happened to all of Us when we first heard it.
This is, by far, my favorite version of The Sound of Silence... I say that as someone raised with the S&G version. There is so much more feeling in this version.
This was emotional...I'v heard this many times..and every time it gets me. Thank you. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
The first few times I heard this, it made me weep.
I relate to a sorrow in this music. For me, it is not anger.
I've loved Disturbed for years, and I was SO glad they covered this song.
Of course he is angry. The original was warning us and 40+ years later you fools did not listen
Yessss
This is, BY FAR, the best cover of this song!
I think so! ❤
It's good, but the Puddles Pity Party version is best.
Thank you 🙏
@SirHairless you're so welcome ❤️🎶🥰
The one on Conan is really good with the instrumental background. Also David was a Jewish Cantor before singing in this metal band.
After that "Are you ready?"
Always makes my cry😢 🇩🇪
This would be an excellent follow up song!
Thank you very much! 🍫☕
That measure where he growls out bowed and prayed just rocks the core- it's magic
if you want GRIT and Growl (old school) hit up Metallica One video best 8 minutes of your life and then you will understand what your (grand)Parents went thru not assuming age
At about the 15:30 min mark I could see in your face the emotion that hits you. It is a very strong song, and builds up to a strong ending.
I would like to suggest The Cranberries "Zombie" and the Bad Wolves cover/update/tribute of that song.
Yes yes yes!!
I watch reactions to this song all the time because I love it. Your presentation is amazing. Yeah I know nothing about music but what makes me happy or sad. This was s lovely.
The original was a warning to us. This version displays the anger that the warning wasn't heeded.
And they say Pentatonix's version is hopeful that we will listen soon. ☺️
I love many of Pentatonix's songs but they ruined this and Hallelujah, neither of which were ever religious songs
💯🇬🇧⭐️⭐️⭐️👍
Everybody misses ‘the sound of silence’ right at the beginning. You are the first person I’ve heard to get it‼️🇨🇦
David was trained as a Cantor, and there's a lot of solid vocal technique supported the rasp, which is exactly why he can produce that sound without blowing out his voice.
Thank you!
One of my favorite reaction videos. Extremely knowledgeable and insightful. Thanks for your honest opinions.
Its been mentioned in comments on multiple reactions and down below as well, but not all in one, and the most popular versions of this song (that I've heard) and the feelings behind them:
Original: The Warning
Disturbed: The Anger when that warning was ignored
Geoff: The sorrow felt from the warning being ignored
Pentatonix: The hopefulness that all might not be lost
(Kind of spoilery for last 2, but since it was already mentioned in comments i thought I'll put it as a single whole comment, since I agree with this)
I've been listening to music since before the days of the Beatles. I have a few favorite songs from over the years. This version of Sounds of Silence is by far my favorite song and the ONLY one that hits me emotionally every single time I hear it. David Draiman's voice is amazing and I'm so glad he chose to cover this song.
Sir Hairless I really enjoy hearing your thoughts and analysis of these iconic songs. It brings a whole new insight. Thank you
I am a stoic person. I, historically, do not cry. This song, regardless of who sings it, makes me cry...
every
single
time.
P.S. 1: I’m going to show this video to a couple of 'metal' friends who will likely love your analysis as well :)
Thanks Maria! And for all the P.S.s too (although no promises on P.S. 2 )
Canadian here and you just won over a fan… Keep on Keeping on ❤
I love the original, but I like this epic rock version just as much. David's voice is very pleasant, but his increasingly haunting singing reinforces the message of the song much more and has a lasting impact on me.
As a recovering addict this hits hard because the thoughts still come and haunt you...this song is haunting and has a positive message while being honest...
73 and love this!!!!! Disturbed rocks.
Iconic song indeed! Both Forestella and Pentatonix have excellent versions of this song released in Jan and Feb of 2019 respectively.
When a remake brings tears to your eyes
🥹🥺
When David sang this gorgeous version on The Conan O’Brien show, he was sick, he had to sit while he sang. He was marvelous, absolutely marvelous.
Love you! 😘
@@ingobordewick6480 Love you, too, Ingo!
I think the live version is even better. Tysm for your detailed reaction.
This song ALWAYS gives me goose bumps. :) I'm glad I got to see your reaction to it, and see that you had a similar one to when I first heard it. :D
I cannot listen to this while driving. I have to jump it. It is one of those songs that mesmerizes the listener.
Paul Simon even recognised this. If the creator of the song says it’s the best version, then you have to acknowledge its significance.
Sounds amazing!
Dan Vasc has also done a fantastic cover of this. It's a beautiful song and i love every cover i have heard.
I’ve watched SO many reactions to this song over the years-this is the most interesting and enlightening one I’ve seen. Well done! Subbed. :)
Appreciate you, cheers!
Well you’ve made my day! I so glad that you have chosen this one to do reaction and analysis of. It’s something that seems to get to everyone. I hope you felt it too. Thank you 🌈
Hi!!!

If you like this one, you might also want to check out Disturbed's cover of Land of Confusion OG by Phil Collins. ❤
Genesis, actually. The video was the first with puppets/Muppets things. I think that was the distinction. It was very strange! Lol
The Disturbed version is, of course, excellent.
Thank you 🙏
Love, Love, Love this version. So powerful. Saw exactly when it hit you. I cry often listening to this version.
He grabbed that base, tennor, and tapped that alto 2! Brilliant! Beautiful analysis Sir Handsome...umm Hairless! 😘
So I'll be the first to say you should follow-up with Pentatonix's version
👀

And then Geoff Castellucci's. :)
And then Forestella's.
But PTX’s first and foremost
Highly recommend the PTX-version! Someone described the "original as a warning, Disturbed as anger that warning wasn't listened to and PTX as a warning with hope"... Anyway, this song is magic ✨ Love your reaction!
👀
never heard PTX version but its too early to say they have a meaning id say they saw another band do a cover and get famous so they did same song for the HOPE
Thanks!
Thank you 🙏 Very kind of you
