This guy has it all wrong. While true that festivals become harder to attend as you get older because of bills, time constraints, and the sad realities of aging, I speak from personal experience that these reasons are what actually drive me to go to festivals. Many people in the older age demographics attend festivals because they NEED the escapism from the mundane realities of everyday life. I go because I have to keep that feeling of youth alive, there is no one day festival that is going to supply that for me (or anyone else for that matter, if people actually wanted a single day experience, more single day passes would end up selling out.) Furthermore, this guy presents no new information as to how to counteract the "walmartization" of festivals. Know why? Because it is already happening! More and more festival attendees are ditching the hollow experience of corporate run and sponsored festivals for festivals that actually offer ideals of unity in humanity and childlike wonder. Ditch Coachella, EDC, Sasquatch!, Bonnaroo, and Pemberton for Lightning in a Bottle, What the Fest?!, Symbiosis, Shambhala, and Oregon Country Fair, amongst others. All that being said, people go to festivals for reasons exclusive to them. The art of the experience is subjective to them and each one holds value in their own right. Some of my most amazing times in life were spent at big box festivals and others were at festivals that were independently organized and had 100 people tops. I wouldn't ever trade one experience for another because one person said that there is some perceived "harm in the art." Art in any form is merely how you interpret any sensual experience.
This guys run Vans Wrapped tour. The problem is the other festival he ran dead. It dead because he like most people in the USA don't know who to run a metal/rock fest. They refuse to bring in a lot of newer bands and they refuse to let really big acts from Europe that are starting to get really big in the USA headline. That's why he was here because he was pissed that his touring Fest Mayhem dead. Well it dead because he refused to bigger in more and more acts not just from the USA but from the world over.
Self Help Festival in California and Rolling Loud Festival in Miami, Florida are right now the future for festivals. But the Big 3 will always stay the same because they cover all genres and get the biggest names.
Even if it's for one or 3 days, the permissions and all the documents have the same procedures and are time consuming and bla bla bla, so 3 days festivals are better than the one day one for both organisers and attendees.
