Strauss genuinely thought they were friends. Even when he was caught by Pinkertons, he never squealed and died without uttering a word, man was loyal.

    Him walking up in front of the cabin with the widow and the child is a parallel to the Downes cabin. Back at Downes’, he took the money and left them in a desperate situation. And he’s clearly told “Don’t kid yourself, you had a choice.” Now the situation repeats itself, he’s again faced with a cabin with a widow and her son and this time he can make the right choice.
    The husband’s name was Arthur and he died, this is both a parallel to Arthur literally dying and also an imagery of Arthur’s old self finally dying. He may have started changing before, but standing in front of that cabin again is the moment he changed completely.

    • @kevinmulia6503
      @kevinmulia6503 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      amazing observation. this side mission is also about parallel to Edith Downes' sidequest, and it also proves to be a pivotal point to Arthur's redemption. it all started from Thomas Downes' debt that Arthur seek regardless of the situation, and the family he left behind snowballed into disaster beyond fixing. after that mission encounter i think Arthur couldn't afford the same fate befall another family.

    • @lewanbroski504
      @lewanbroski504 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You're right about it being a parallel but wrong about what the parallel is about (or from how I see it anyways) there's an instance where Arthur talks about his Kid an the kids mother and how they where killed over a matter of a couple dollars.
      The same situation is here except this time they don't have anyone to look after them and Arthur's the one hunting them down for the money so to speak
      Imagine how bad you must feel this situation has happened in your life and now you're the one causing it

      Arthur can use the threaten option and most people will pay their debts without him throwing a single punch. The fact that he decided to beat on a sick farmer with tuberculosis is his own fault. Strauss asked him for help collecting money from a debter and to use what means he deems necessary. If someone can't pay, he can't pay no matter bad you beat him. Arthur getting sick and dying is a result of his own violent aggressive actions.
      As the saying goes, those who don't seek death won't die. Arthur even said he beat up a guy with tuberculosis to the point where he coughs up blood into his face just for a couple of dollars. That is not Strauss's fault. Also Strauss mentions it before but its his business that helps feed the women and children within the camp. He contributes a lot and even when he's being tortured, he still said nothing about the gang. He was loyal, through and through. A bit shady but a loyal companion. Strauss was a guy who never forgot his debts and he even died to pay them back.

He already felt bad when he confronted the widow, but was still going to try to do his job and get what he could from them. The boy was the straw that broke the camel's back, when he decided he couldn't do this anymore, and that he was tired of being the man that he was. That was the moment, I think, that Arthur killed the monster that was inside of him. Helping the Downes was enough to push him to the line, but this is the moment when he crossed it.

      I said this in another comment, but Arthur is technically worse than Strauss. Arthur has killed way more innocent people like bank guards, stage coach guards and police officers than Strauss has by causing them to over work. The men that Arthur kill have kids as shown in the epilogue when the guard is telling John about his kids at home. Many women and children are probably orphaned or widowed by the actions of Arthur but this is the first time he actually sees it himself and it's just a fraction of the pain he caused.

      The thing is, Arthur was riddled with guilt by seeing the wife and child barely surviving. And he was disgusted that Strauss would take money away from them without a second thought, so in disgust and rage, he threw Strauss out as he wasn't going to shelter someone who preyed upon the desperate and hungry. Strauss however, probably felt awful from Arthur's TB and all the loans he put on the families, so to make up for what he had done, he refused to rat out the gang.

    I don't really have that much of a problem with what Strauss does. If I lent money to people, I'd want it back too. A friend of mine once begged me to lend him money. More than a thousand dollars for a rent deposit. We came up with a payment plan, for him to pay me back within a year, which he ignored after about a week. He started avoiding me, but we still had the same group of friends. He wouldn't answer the phone, and if I was at some party where he was planning to be, he'd cancel. Stuff like that. He was making plenty of money too, taking fancy vacations, buying new electronics, etc. After about a year of him dodging me, I just told everyone that he ripped me off. His closest friends started calling him up, talking shit to him, and he paid me back within a month. I still hang out with him sometimes, but I wouldn't lend him a nickel. He's back in debt, of course, and is irresponsible with his money. I definitely don't feel sorry for him.
    It's one thing to have student loans or a mortgage, but idiots that borrow money for frivolous things deserve whatever comes their way. Especially farmers in the wild west. They weren't borrowing money for food, obviously. What were they spending the money on, hookers?

    I feel that they could have done more with Strauss in order to make him seem more ambivalent and sympathetic like the other gang members: A guy who does horrible thing to contribute to the gang's finances, but who also is a loyal friend to his fellow gang members and considers them family and heaps kindness upon them when they are among themselves. E.g. it would have been nice if there had been a few camp scenes of him being a kind ucle to Jack or of him teaching Jack math, or of him relating exciting stories at the camp fire ore singing some nice sounding Austrian folk song etc.
    And they could have made it more clear that Arthur, and not Strauss bears the main responsibility for Arthur getting TB. E.g. when Strauss sends Arthur off on his debt collecting mission and telling him about the various people who owe the gang money, Strauss could have said something to Arthur, when addressing the case of Thomas Dows, like "...and then there is that fellow Dowes. You should go easy on him, 'cause he is in bad health, so please no unnecessary violence" -> and when Arthur arrives at Dowe's ranch he recognizes him from Valentine and gets angry 'cause he recalls that Dowes got in his way when he was beating up Tommy in front of the Saloon, and thus loses his self-control and needless beats up Dowes. And when he returns to camp to tell Strauss how the debt collecting jobs went he mentions that he was very brutal to Dowes and beat him to a bloody pulp, whereupon Strauss is aghast and says something like "Dear god, why did you do that? The man is sick! We just want our money back. We do not want to make that man's health worse than it is anyway!" And Arthur says something like "Yeah, I just lost it. I had a run-in with the man in Valentine he stepped in and prevented me from finishing a guy who had messed with me in the Saloon...I guess I was just still very angry about that, so when I recognized him I just lost it and needlessly beat the man up 'cause I resented him for daring to get in my way in Valentine...You are right, Leopold, I should have gone easier on him and just given him a few stern looks to intimidate him, so that he would roll up his sleeves to get his act together any pay us back, instead of manhandling him..." Something like that would have made Strauss a more complicated and three-dimensional character IMHO
